Finally got the chance to try their new location and it did not disappoint!! It's one of the best places in town if you want something that's a little more like authentic Mexican food. The food was delicious and they have some of the creamiest queso in town. Also, we did not drink but their margaritas were huge and had a fantastic price tags to go with it. The restaurant is small but pretty spacious and has a very homey feel. Our server was sweet and they offered a variety of options on the menu. This place was dead when we got here at 7:45. The chips and salsa were very original. The salsa seemed very store bought with a dash of pepper flakes... So the really sad thing is the pictures on the menu look so much more appetizing than what was brought to our table. I got the enchiladas verde with rice and beans, my husband got the molcajete ranchero, and our daughter wanted the chicken tenders w/fires. When I got my food, and saw the way the rice looked and the portion size of everything I knew this restaurant was a bad idea. The rice was over cooked and the beans tasted like they came out of a can. Nothing on my plate tasted like it was made in the kitchen there. The chicken also in the enchiladas was DRY!! My husband's molcajete was over cooked.... The cheese they added to it cooked to the point that it looked like chicken and it melted and got everything to stick to the bottom of the molcajete bowl and it also had zero flavor. And lastly, our daughter's chicken tenders were extremely dry, every bite she took of 1 tender she would have to drink her soda to wash it down so she wouldn't choke. The girl who was our waitress was on top of her game so there was no reason to be rude to her for the people in the kitchen that can't cook, but it is unbelievable how this place has 3.8 stars. Maybe during the day they have a better cook but tonight was bad. We probably shouldn't have gone back after the first time we went there we waited around 3 to 4 minutes for someone to sit us. Food is close to authentic. Ambiance is rustic. Service is normally ok. Today was very frustrating to the point I may never return. I placed and order with a meal, side of guacamole all to go. My server wanted to charge me for the chips and salsa that number one , should have come with the meal. He sd they we included if you ate inside, but were charged if you took it to go. Very dumb. I sadly didn't take any pictures of our meals but I enjoyed it! Pros: - GREAT food! I tried the carnitas roja (shredded pork in red salsa with onions) it was yummy! Served with tortillas, rice and beans and was only 10.50! At Tarahamaras for a similar dish it'll cost ya' $18! And this was waaay tastier! My kids enjoyed their quesadilla and burrito as well. - very friendly staff! They were hustling and had wonderful team work. - EXCELLENT prices!! It was so refreshing to see prices that weren't $15+ a plate! Cons: - took a minute to get seated and get drinks although they were pretty busy so hard to dock em' here. - queso isn't free but salsa and chips are! I did try the queso and it was pretty mid but not bad! Lacks a little seasoning. Salsa was also just ok, but I'm a bit of a snob here. - the big con is that they don't use homemade tortillas, if they made their own it'd be 5/5 for me. I want to preface this review with the statement that I really enjoyed the food, my wife not so much. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just not what she liked or was used to. Their queso is phenomenal. We were greeted very quickly and seated promptly. But..... being right next door to a dispensary there was the smell from next door that greeted us, strike one. The atmosphere was really neat and the restaurant was very clean. The waiter was very attentive to us and was very prompt and courteous. The food was delivered quickly and was very fresh, I enjoyed mine, the wife again, not so much. We both enjoy Mexican food and the flavors to her were just not what she was accustomed to. Not the restaurants fault and no markdown for this. But what was bothersome during our meal was how the young man tending the bar or possibly a manager on duty, was constantly doting over two young ladies who came in at the same time as us and were seated across from us. He was not their server and his attention to them did not impact on our server( who was also theirs) from attending to us during out visit. So while it may be picky, it was very obvious and a distraction from our meal. Strike two. The prices were very reasonable or so I felt ( although the bowl of queso was 7 dollars, I'm not accustomed to paying for queso if I order a meal, but it was very good so I felt it was justified, But what did irk me was that they had a 3% surcharge added on my bill because I used a credit card. This may be becoming the norm but it was my first time seeing it at a restaurant and not for me. Strike three. I would recommend this place to others wile mentioning the above issue and let them try for themselves. Like I said, the food and the service we received was good. We were driving through OK., & stopped here when our hand-pulled noodle place was closed. We were quite happy that Yelp helped us find Volcano's. My B.F. had the #10 combo plate. He loved that it came w/ a street taco instead of the usual crunchy taco. The enchilada had a mole tasting sauce which was wonderful & tons of ground beef. He loved his chile relleno as well. He said that it would be difficult to pick a favorite because they were all so unique tasting.I had carnitas w/ salsa verde. Unfortunately it was way too salty for me. It came w/ a generous amount of lettuce, tomato, guacamole & sour cream so I ended up making tacos w/ the garnishes to lessen the saltiness. I loved the beans & rice. I put the cheesy part of the beans on several chips w/ the lettuce, tomato, sour cream & salsa for nachos. YUM! That's a great sign. The red sauce was rather bland for us. When we asked if they had some with more heat we were offered red or green. We got the green & really liked it. I actually thought that the chips were great as well. The photo of the mangoada looked spectacular, but I didn't get one because we are on the road. If I was a local this definitely would be my hang out & I'd settle down w/ one. Oh, the prices are amazing compared to Houston & just about anywhere we've been on long road trips. Combo was $9.99 & carnitas $10.49. Do I need to say that I can eat? My B.F. ate quite a bit of mine & I still had a carnita taco left to take to go. The portions are quite generous. Both servers were great. Just realized this store opened on 12th street. I had the California burrito, with carne asada. Huge pieces of steak throughout! Down side no salsa on side, but still great and equally incorporated all ingredients, as opposed to the last bite being just tortilla. My kiddo had the chicken quesadilla and chips with queso and told me it was better than the fav. taco truck quesadilla. Prices are great, and in addition they have Pozole.
