    Mammoth Orange Menu -- 24 February 2020
    Summer K.

I've passed this place a million times, but I recently came across a 2017 article in The Arkansas Times that piqued my interest. Yesterday, as I was passing through, I decided to give it a try. My burger was awesome and I absolutely loved the battered onion rings! Portion sizes are very generous, and the staff seem friendly enough. It's nothing fancy, but who needs fancy when you just want something classically GOOD and filling? I'd say it's definitely worth the stop. I forgot to take pictures of my food, but I did capture the current menu, which I couldn't find online.

    Front of building

The fries was good, burger needed some flavor. But overall very fresh and worth the 45 minute trip to try it.

    Very dive-ish inside

So I've seen this place on a few of those "interesting restaurants in Arkansas you need to try" lists on Facebook and today decided we would run out there and try it. I honestly think the odd shape of the building and the fact that it's been around since the 60's is probably the draw. Note: the decor on the inside is from the 60's-80's, but not in the kitsche way. More like in the "Mamaw and Papaw left their stuff on the walls and we just don't wanna take it down" way. We walked in and it wasn't really apparent if we should order at the counter or go sit down. A sign would have been nice. No biggie. The girl at the counter looked at us and immediately said "we only accept cash" without greeting us or anything. We asked if we were supposed to order at the counter or go sit down first and were told "either way"....so we looked at the big menu hanging over the counter and ordered and paid. A few minutes later we got our food so it all worked out. However, we saw a few people walk in and sit down and they were given menus to order...so I guess it really is "either way". The waitress only brought out my plate and looked very confused. She said "did y'all have a hamburger with onion rings?" I said yes and she laid it down and started to walk away. I spoke up and said "we also had another burger and fries" and she looked at me with this weird gaze like I should just assume it's coming and said "yeah, it's not done yet." I mean, it would've been nice for her to mention that instead of me having to assume she only was bringing half my order, but you know...small town, really young waitress, so I just overlooked it. It was just a little awkward. I had a regular hamburger with onion rings and my boyfriend had a jumbo cheeseburger with Cajun fries. The hamburgers had real, hand-patted patties and tasted pretty close to homemade. Not greasy at all. Lettuce and tomato were very fresh, so it was almost like having my mom cook a burger for me. The onion rings and fries were pretty average. After reading the other reviews, I really wish I could visit on a weekday when they have lunch specials. But based on our visit today, the food was a little above average, the atmosohere was pretty nostalgic, and the service was just strange. I still think it's worth a trip

Cool old unique burger place, built in 1964

They are ok and somewhat decent! Their milkshakes are really good though and probably the only good things there

They had some nice specials yesterday, so we decided to try it. When we called, I asked what side dishes were offered with the specials. She would not answer me directly, saying "We have all of our sides available." Not having a menu in front of me, I asked her to name some recommendations. She said, "mashed potatoes and gravy" and when I said that I wanted that, she said, "Oh no, we're out of that." She did the same with baked potatoes and could not remember what side dishes were available besides purple hull peas. We kept guessing until we found two that she said were available. That was frustrating and she started sounding irritated with us. My husband got the double-dipped pork chop. He said that It was cold, bland, and chewy He found it inedible. My chicken fried steak was worse, not just cold and chewy, but also grisly and greasy. The gravy and sides were so heavily salted and peppered, that I wondered if the chef had any tastebuds at all. My purple hull peas had these unsightly, slimy pieces of bacon that would have been good a few hours ago, but how were just nastily breaking down in the juice. I would not even feed that to my dogs, it got thrown in the trash. The serving tray that I received looked as though the purple hull peas were thrown from across the room, they were splattered all over inside and outside of my tray. It was a mess. I will not be back this time. I give up.

As a northerner stepping into a Southern-style spot, I have to agree with another Yelp reviewer…read moreabout the sweet tea. It's not that true Southern sweet tea you hear legends about -- the kind that practically hugs your soul and spikes your dentist's anxiety -- but honestly, it's not bad at all if you're trying to watch your sugar. Consider it "Midwest sweet." Polite. Respectable. Not trying to put you into a sugar coma. Now let's talk food. My kiddos ordered the popcorn chicken and mini dogs -- and as any parent knows, the highest culinary honor is the empty plate. They ate every last bite. From my 5-year-old, that's basically a Michelin star review. My husband had the BBQ burger. When asked for a detailed description, I received his usual top-tier food critique vocabulary: "It was good." I ordered the BBQ bacon chicken with tots. The tater tots deserve their own moment -- perfectly crisp, not oily, and seasoned just right. The chicken itself leaned a little on the dry side, but the BBQ sauce definitely stepped in and saved the day. Overall? I'd definitely stop here again -- especially over chain restaurant which seem to be the only other commonly options in the next town over. This place feels like the better pick when you want something satisfying without the big-chain blah.
