This so called Dr is a joke. We waited 3 weeks for an opening and he wasted our time. He only specializes in Lupus, and doesn't treat anything else. He has terrible bedside manner. Dr. Shim saw my husband for raynauds in his hands and toes. He was very insightful on informing us that this was probably a genetic thing and less of an autoimmune issue but his only advice was to keep his hands and toes warm and to have him carry around gloves for when he goes into cold places. It was a bit of a let down. I was hoping there might be a cream or medication he could take but I understand not all doctors want to jump to medication first if it can be helped. My husbands just been dealing with this for 30 years and at some points his hands turn white from the lack of circulation so I'm not sure gloves is really going to help that. I've been seeing Dr. Shim for about 10 years, since his time at UCLA. Throughout that time, he has always taken my concerns seriously and genuinely cared about my health. He listens carefully, thinks through complex issues, and gives honest and professional diagnoses. I have gone to this doctor twice. Both times ended unacceptably. The first time left me feeling intimidated and frustrated. One a positive note, he did spend a lot of time with me. The second visit I was told that he doesn't give care for fibromyalgia- which you're supposed to see a rheumatologist for - per The Mayo Clinic website! Additionally, he was sure I didn't have psoriatic arthritis just by looking at me, but was later confirmed with an MRI with a different doctor. Can't recommend this doctor. read more

It has been almost 6 years since I saw Dr. Shim. I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis, and I decided to see my favorite rheumatologist again. I can't believe he still remembers me from 6 years ago! As before, he greeted me with the warmest smile, empathy, and excellent bedside manner. He carefully listened to all my concerns about starting osteoporosis therapy and alleviated by fears by going over the pros and cons associated with each medication. In the end, I was able to make an informed decision about the treatment that was right for me. I felt bad, because he spent almost an hour with me during the visit. Although I live in Los Angeles, I do not mind driving an hour to see Dr. Shim. He is worth it! He is so knowledgeable, intelligent, friendly, caring, and kind. He also treats you like family, not just a number. I am so grateful that I have Dr. Shim as my rheumatologist. I have been telling all my friends and family members about him. I hope Dr. Shim does not mind. I highly recommend Dr. Shim! read more

Dr. Shim is nice and I've had good experience with him so far. He's been my rheumatologist for about 2 years now. He listens and provides the necessary treatment. The only thing I notice is that he doesn't seem to want to prescribe pain medication. He tells me to take over the counter meds which don't really work for chronic bursitis. I have a high pain tolerance and I don't take ibuprofen unless it's absolutely necessary but when the pain is intense just regular ibuprofen doesn't cut it. Wow if you are in need of a rheumetologist this is your guy! I have had mysterious full body symptoms (mold toxicity) and Dr Shim was amazing he covered every test possible! I saw this rheumatologist and I'm sad to say that he really seemed like he didn't care and I felt rushed. I went in because my primary care recommended a rheumatologist for my issues. He had no bed side manner whatsoever! He never asked for a follow up (because he obviously could care less). I will not be going back to him. read more

My sister recently saw Dr Shim and was not a fan. He mentioned her symptoms seem like they are vaccine related but did not put that in the report. He didn't seem like he really cared but I needed a 2nd opinion on an auto immune disease I was tested positive for but my first choice in a rheumatologist was out for a while so I decided to go with dr shim before my sister expressed how dissatisfied Ted she was. My not so great review is..I felt like he was trying to rush me out. I spent 15 min with him so it's not like I was holding him up forever. I have serious pain going on and have paid my out of pocket maximums to try to get some answers since it's been a very expensive journey for me during this pandemic while feeling awful myself and dealing with my sisters cancer. I get that my inflammation markers look ok..but I also take a ton of anti-inflammatory meds and take care of myself with alternative approaches and I don't like a doctor that dismisses my pain and what I'm going through. In general I just didn't get a good feeling about his approach and felt he lacked empathy and concern as we are not just a number and there is a lot of pain involved. Let's just say you are not going to feel like a cared patient by this doctor but it's a rarity to feel cared for by any doctor these days. Brenda the nurse that took me in however was wonderful, welcoming and kind. She treated you like a person and not just a patient with a number on your forehead. Dr. Shim also told me just because my Ana auto immune marker was high it doesn't mean I have an auto immune disease. Fair enough but I asked him if it takes 2-2 1/2yrs to get fully diagnosed..he said yes..I said well I got diagnosed a year ago so I guess there is still time to figure out if I have it and how to treat it as opposed to dismissing it. Plus there are many more auto immune diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis and lupus which is what he discussed. I heard back from the doctor an hour later and he leaves me an email saying nothing was shown in my X-ray. I said that's it? So no recommendation of an mri or anything? At least my other rheumatologist wanted to look into other things and what we can do to further dig into what is making me so I'll. read more

I had 4 rheumatologist over the last 4 yrs. Noone is as efficient as Dr. Shim. He got me proper meds asap and explained why folic acid was needed as part of the protocol. I like his nurse, she was quick and helpful. So glad Dr. Kamada referred me to Dr. Shim or I would gone down the rabbit hole of misses with finding quality doctors. read more

Getting an appointment quickly was appreciated. Other Rheumatologist did not have new patient appointments for 2-6 months. Dr. Shim was personable, thorough, and professional. He asked questions that showed me he was listening to me and my case- not just working off a generic check list. He broke down my lab results to me in a way that was easy to understand.
