This review is from a parent and not instructors, like most before mine…read more To me this was very expensive for what you get. My child found it very frustrating having to sit around other kids who would roll around, talk, sit with there parents when they got bored and show up late. And there was no discipline at all. It didn't really matter at all during your testing what you did, EVERYBODY gets a passing grade. I watch my child doing all the proper moves and then watch other children with a higher belt degree barely do the routine, but if you are paid up your kid will pass, I guess that's how it works. When you sign up sifu is there to take your credit card info, and they will PUSH the black sash to your child steady. THEN when you ask for a meeting to discuss leaving the program it gets interesting. We showed up , entered the office, Sifu Rob leaves. He actually leaves the property, gone. Can't handle the situation I guess. This is when BRE ( I think she gave a positive review in 2012 and is an instructor there) enters and the lovely demeanor of her changes. Her tactics start with her sitting in front of your child and asking them questions. She doesn't actually talk to us, the parents. Everything is directed to the child. When we ask a question, she would cut us off. My child was very young when they said they would stay threw any turmoil and get their black sash. BRE will bring this up to our child steady, very good guilt tactic to use on a child. I stated that do to monitary restraints our family could not afford the high price of the program. She didn't care to here that, didn't even offer a reduction. Toward the end of this meeting my child asked to stay for her last class, BRE wouldn't have any of that. She said to my child " your sending me mixed signals, do you want to stay or leave? well what is it? " BRE decided not to let our child participate in the last class, we even said they want to do the last class because Daniel N ( another person who gave a review is an instructor) is my child's favorite instructor and really wanted to say goodbye. In the end our family was very upset on how this place makes you feel when you can no longer afford their high cost. They are all lovely Dovey there, but just don't try and to leave. Lately we have spoken to other families who have left this place and have had the same experience ( BRE experience) or worse.

Beware it's a money grab!!! Pretend they care but it's all about money!!! Really expensive charge…read more Pretend it is half price for registration $500, $297 monthly membership fee, 5 months after pay up registration $897, then membership fee increases to $397/$497 monthly cause you're receiving your black uniform. The patience and care the instructors show are the most professional and knowledgeable that I have seen in any group of mentors for any child's activity anywhere. They work with kids and families with so many diverse backgrounds and ability levels, that I can't recommend them enough if you want to develop physical fitness, safety, self-discipline or self-confidence.

Students also have required reading on the psychology of achievement, good habits, positive self talk, etc. If you are a parent, this place will supplement your efforts with community support in a fantastic way I've never seen elsewhere. (Adult students are also required to fill out very pedantic paperwork about TV time and food habits along with the kids, something that I can see time strapped, mature adults balking at). However, don't this fool you. Sifu Paul Gruschow teaches an eclectic mixture of Praying Mantis Kung Fu styles from different lineages under Grandmaster Raymond Fogg. Grandmaster Fogg has letters of recommendation from many Kung Fu legends such as Lily Lau and Shih Kien who played Han in "Enter the Dragon". Expensive, but good for families.

Sifu Brian Bateman is an excellent teacher who adapts to the ability of those present, customizing each class as needed. He has produced several outstanding black sash students over the years in Rochester. Traditional martial arts are often disrespected because they are commercialized for children, pressure testing and free sparring are often removed, and worse, MMA people often demand large puffy boxing gloves not suited for this style that constantly mixes grabs and yanks to setup brutal strikes. Don't let it fool you -- this is a fantastic system for self defense you will learn traditional weapons. Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing has co-written a book with Sifu Bateman, showing his dedication as an excellent disciple. I loved taking my kids to Rochester Shaolin.

She really liked it and moved up quickly. In the end of January of 14, I had enough of watching and decided to join officially in February. By mid summer, I was surprised that I had lost 25 pounds and that my clothes fit differently. I knew I wasn't "toned", but I never thought of myself as overweight. That October I turned 39 and decided that I wanted to be in the best shape of my life before I turned 40. I seeked advice and a meal plan from a personal trainer, and continued Kung-Fu 3 times a week, with HIIT training on the off days. By my 40th birthday, I had lost almost 60 pounds and lost 6" around my waist (according to my pants size)! I've since discontinued my restrictive meal plan and settled in at 45 pounds lost - even a year later. Kung-Fu kick started my entire health reformation, and continues to be fun! Bottom line: fun, better health, more confidence, lower blood pressure, new friends, more energy, probable longer life expectancy
