I'm in Rexburg for the next few weeks and thought I would try some Chinese food. I'm usually not so blunt, but this is the worst Chinese food I've ever had. The pork fried rice is just white rice with small pieces of pork thrown in. I ordered the sesame chicken. It's just breaded chicken with hardly any seeds on it. The pictures are accurate. I did get a paper plate at the hotel to eat on. Bottom line go down the road to Panda Express. I would bet anything it's hands down better. read more

There was so much breading on the pork and chicken from the combo meals that I thought I was eating funnel cake. And the sauces were basically sugar. Dinner and a show Was very impressed. An unruly person came in with a phone order and wanted to change something. We were impressed with the way it was handled on Mandarins end. The guy was a prick. Wanting to change his order but not wanting to pay for the change. Not all meals are the same. Not equal in ingredients or prices. Some things just cost more. When he stormed out because he wasn't getting his food for a cheaper price (his mistake/change desire) the restaurant patrons clapped. It was great for my kids to see you don't get your way just for being a jerk and demanding whatever you want. With all of the drama, our service and food was not effected. We got great service. We came in 5 minutes after they close, and the lady at the register said that they were closed. However, she said that they had a sweet and sour pork for us if we wanted to buy some. The food was great. As a food service employee myself I was amazed at how willing they were to accommodate to use. The pork was delicious and very hot. The sauce almost wasn't necessary to add. They didn't give much rice I imagine nace we came in after close. My only other complaint is that the price was a little high. Overall excellent service and pretty good food. My husband and I have seen this restaurant everyday since we moved here and we were excited to finally try it but we were sadly disappointed. When we first arrived at the restaurant, we stood at the front for a few minutes, unsure if we needed to seat ourselves or if we were to wait to be seated. Both servers were at the front, one was on the phone, probably doing a take out order, and the other was just standing next to him. She didn't say anything to us but when the boy got off the phone he asked if we were there to dine in and then let us know that we could take a seat. It was kind of weird but we're patient people so we just shrugged it off. We got our order taken a few minutes after we sat down and then waited for our food for about 10 minutes. I got the orange chicken, chicken chow mein, and egg rolls, my husband got the the general tao's chicken, pork fried rice, and the pot stickers. The egg rolls were about the only thing I enjoyed, they were small and crunchy and tasted great! However, the orange chicken tasted like a McDonald's chicken nugget with an after taste of ketchup, the chow mein was plain and almost flavorless. My husbands "fried rice" was just a scoop of white rice with some veggies mixed in. He described his chicken as a "fried flour ball covered in sauce". My 12-year-old daughter and I eat out and she writes the review. I walked in, and while it was not particularly unpleasant, I couldn't get the thought out of my head that it looked like a fancy living room. (Crown molding and everything) but other then that it was quite nice. All I got was some spring rolls and egg rolls to share with my family (i wasn't particularly hungry at the time) both were good, they were the right amount of crunchy/crispy to be quite delicate and easy to eat. The chop sticks we were given were a little flimsier then usual, but they were smoother and didn't taste like wood, so I suppose it's a win-lose trade off. My grandma ordered orange chicken and she said it was the worst. The fortune cookies were a little stale and bland, but weren't to sweet which is what I care about the most. I have been here before and we were very pleased with the food. This time however was different. My wife was not sure if she got Sweet and Sour chicken of Orange chicken. That is how bland the food was. I was supposed to get Sweet and Sour Pork. I could not tell of it was chicken or pork. The newest of the 4 Chinese places in town, it's off to a promising start. Their menu is almost exactly the same as the two "Fong's." For example, the No. 1 lunch special is sweet & sour chicken and the No. 5 is mandarin chicken at Fong's and here. However, the Mandarin's helpings seem a little more generous and the food tastes a bit fresher. It is also much cleaner. I've only been here once, but the beef lo mien I had was really good. Unlike most new restaurants, the service was very fast. I recommend you give this place a try. read more

There is a Panda Express 3 minutes from here and I will choose Mandarin Restaurant 10/10 times, unless someone is paying for me then I'll go where they tell me. At Panda Express I felt like my food was 85% rice and 15% the entree I purchased. If I wanted a bowl of rice I can make that myself at home for 10 cents. At the Mandarin Restaurant you pay maybe a dollar more if you get the dinner portion, which is good sized, and you actually get the chicken or beef you ordered and not just a lot of rice. For the price I pay I definitely get the quality of a restaurant and the great quality of food. They come by and take your drink and refill it which I enjoy, and is a dying thing at "restaurants" now a days. read more

A 4/5 because they give large portions. We order combo dinners 2 & 4...we definitely didn't expect this much food for two people haha. Sweet and sour pork is not bad, cheese wontons are okay, and we wish we were given more shrimp. The chow mein didn't have too much flavor, but I'd eat that over top ramen any day haha. The chow mien was definitely not Panda Express style, more like soggy cabbage and bean sprouts so that was pretty disappointing. It is easy to be overly critical when you have a negative experience and I don't want this to sound that way. However, our visit to the Mandarin didn't turn out so well. Positives: - Fast service. It wasn't really that busy - Friendly staff - Clean and simple dining room. We have been on a quest to find a place in Rexburg that serve veg-friendly meals. Unfortunately the choices are very few. We thought for sure that a Chinese restaurant would have a few choices that were not centered around meat. Well, I was wrong. If you are looking for vegetarian, vegan, WFPB, or some other non-meat eating label, then you will not want to visit here. We looked at the menu and found a vegetable dish that looked good. Then we asked about any other non-meat options or if they would substitute tofu for the meat. No tofu substitutions allowed, but she said they had one tofu dish. It was called Ma-Po Tofu. It sounded pretty safe, so we ordered it. Little did I know that in addition to the tofu, it had pork in it. Bottom line, they really only have one non-meat item on the menu and that is the vegetables. Here is what we had: - Spring rolls: They were very small, had very little filling, and even tasted a bit doughy. They were really not very good. - White rice. We asked for brown rice. They didn't have it. The white rice was OK. They gave us a nice sized serving. - Vegetables: a standard sized plate of veggies. They were cooked just right. The sauce was tasty. I thought they put way more oil on them than they really needed for cooking. This was the best part of the meal. Ma-Po Tofu - It is basically tofu chunks in brown pork gravy with small pieces of pork in the mix. We picked out a bit of the tofu and ate it. The spice was about right. Overall it was disappointing. Bottom line: we will keep searching for a veg-friendly place in Rexburg. I don't think we will go back the the Mandarin. read more

I'm thinking finding good Chinese in Idaho is like finding a good bowl of grits in Chicago... I was happily proven wrong when we rolled into Rexburg. I've been coming here for years! A small locally owned and operated Mandarin Chinese food restaurant! The family that owns and operates the restaurant are from China and make the food themselves. The food is fantastic and the people that work there are phenomenal! They do so well with service and the prices are good. The portions are so large you always have to bring food home with you! The only reason I'm giving this place stars is because the server was super nice. I do NOT recommend coming here, especially if you are vegetarian. The only vegetarian option is vegetable stir fry and you can NOT add tofu, even though tofu is on the menu. The stir fry was barely cooked and had almost no flavor. I wouldn't be surprised if they just microwaved one of those frozen veggie packs you can get at the store. The spring rolls were mediocre and the won tons were all cream cheese. By no means is this the best Chinese food I've ever had, but when your only other option in town is that foul monstrosity known as Fong's, you gotta take what you can get. Fair warning: their chow mein is weird. I don't care if it's "authentic" or "real" chow mein or whatever the crap; if I order chow mein, I want thick greasy noodles, chunks of meat, and vegetables all covered in sauce and sesame seeds. What I don't want is a lump of what looks like cole slaw topped with those crunchy noodles you put on salads. That's what their version of "chow mein" is, though, so if something that looks like what food eats appeals to you, go ahead. If not, order the rice instead. That's the only real complaint I have about this place though. It's decently affordable. The broccoli beef is pretty good and didn't give me food poisoning like That Other Chinese Place In Rexburg did. I'm particularly fond of their potstickers and their plain fried wontons. My palate is obviously not the most refined, but for me, this place does the trick when I'm craving Chinese. read more

My family and I stopped by on our way to Yellowstone, savoring a brief bite of Chinese food in between all the burger joints and fast food we'd been eating. We didn't know what to expect for a Chinese joint in a small town in Idaho, but we were very pleasantly surprised by both the service and the food! Most of the clientele is not Chinese, so the menu consists of more American-style Chinese food. That being said, the dishes were light, fresh, and tasty, and can be served family style.
