When not even a cricket sounds our minds will begin to talk to us. This brings to mind a philosophical question. Does silence actually give notice? In the case of Hong Kong Garden (All Day Buffet), silence did indeed demand to be noticed, as we entered into desolentness. While listening to the voice of silence registering the atmosphere we noticed the spacious, typically colored and lit Chinese food buffet. After a minute, we were brought back from our lonely inner journey by a highly energetic man wearing a warm smile, who waved his arm over the floor expanse: "Hi guys! Sit anywhere you like." That made us feel welcome and appreciated. I started at the salad bar part of the buffet, which looked fresh and lively with a myriad of colors and flavors. Crisp greens, mixed seafood, and a selection of crunchy toppings to be dressed by the classics like Ranch, Blue Cheese, French, and Thousand Island. Looking at the food on the buffet brings a mix of interest and slight disappointment, for the selection is limited. While it is small, very fresh and tasty delicacies were steaming from the buffet table. Nice, not too sweet or too spicy, but flavorful sauces--like sweet and sour and oyster sauce--dazzled up their chicken, beef, and noodle dishes. I did not like a couple of dishes; the crunchy chicken for example was hard to chew and tasted more like fried fat than chicken, but most of what is there is well worth the money. Our young lady server was friendly, attentive, and seemed genuinely happy to take our plates and refill drinks. 6 stars for the people. Overall it is not a bad little buffet, and I wish other Chinese buffet services could even touch how nice these people are. But I've been to better buffets, so four stars. Always start positive. I really like their noodles! Other than that, the potstickers were cold, the sauces in all of the buffet dishes (except for the General's chicken) just looked either too light or wrong in color. There was no hot and sour soup, the inside of the crab rangoons barely had any cream cheese and the egg rolls are battered over the skin and see fries like a monte crispy sandwich. We stopped here for the lunch buffet and even though it doesn't look like much, the food was pretty good. They had fried shrimp, beef and broccoli, moo goo gai pan, egg foo young, a few pork selections and several chicken dishes to choose from. They also had a salad bar and some desserts, which we did not get to try. Our server was very friendly and attentive. OK, I know I'm in the middle of nowhere in Idaho. I mean who ever goes to Blackfoot Idaho right? We're here for civil air patrol and outside of Pocatello for regionals wrestling. I need to warn those enthusiasts that like real Chinese food. This is not that place. There is nothing from Hong Kong here and it is not Chinese. The first hint that is not Chinese is over half the dishes have in parentheses (with gravy). So that's chow mein with gravy, mixed vegetables with gravy, fried noodles with gravy... I thought maybe they just meant sauce and just used with gravy part... But no, it was actually a gravy on them. Gravy on everything. Not as thick as mashed potatoes and gravy but somewhat on that line. A more appropriate name for this place would be gravy boat. This would go OK, however the overly large woman at the cashier desk was quite rude. There was no real service. When asking questions about the menus and items we received flippant answers. I give this place five stars purely based off of their mandarin chicken lunch special (#10). Every time I come to Blackfoot, I have to stop and get it. The flavor of the rice and the sweet and sour sauce isn't like anywhere else I've been able to find for casual Chinese, whether in Idaho, Utah, or California. The rice might not look super hearty, but I love it. It's made with more of a shredded pork (not the ham cubes you usually see), so the flavor is distinctive, and the texture is good. Their Mandarin chicken is pretty much sweet and sour chicken, but with a breaded chicken breast cut into slices instead of being presented in little breaded nuggets covered in sauce like sweet and sour chicken usually is. It comes in two pint boxes with a side of sauce if you get it to-go, which actually ends up being more than enough for me, especially for the price. It's $5.50 during lunch or $6.25 after 3 pm... hello, worth it. I also have no complaints about their buffet. It's small, but enough people come during lunch (can't remember what dinner crowds are like) that the food gets rotated relatively quickly. Certainly not fine dining but I've enjoyed eating here several times. I've always had the buffet and found five to six things that I like quite a bit. There are also some fairly awful items but the price is right and service is pretty good. I like the egg Foo Young quite a bit , for example and the pot stickers are pretty good as well as a couple of the chicken items. Not good food, ordered beef and broccoli and it had 6 pieces of beef in it way too many veggies. It was chewy and not good. I also ordered the chicken fried rice and the pic I posted is what I got. We were craving Chinese, or the kids were on our way to and from Yellowstone. This came up on a search and we headed to it. Not great food, but there were a number of dishes that we picked through and enjoyed. I always hesitate at chinese buffets, they seem to appeal to many people but they are not that great of food. Come on Chinese in Blackfoot Id the buffet was great for the locale. This is better than the hamburger chains that dot the main drag or the milk toast diners that claim to home cook food. The buffet is actually really good for a place and a town this small. If you ever come to Blackfoot and eat here, you HAVE to try the Peanut Chicken... It's unbelievably delicious! Anyone who knows me knows I like the Coconut Shrimp at New China Sun in Springfield, Oregon... well, this is MUCH better! The selection is small on the buffet, but what is there is tasty and fresh. On the way to a wedding we checked in at Best Western and then want something to eat. Walked into Hong Kong Garden. Booths a bit used but we are there to eat. For 10.00 we had the buffet, which came with a drink. Best fried chicken I have had in years, no additional salt needed. Fresh seafood, fresh Chinese American food. Egg foo young fresh and yummy. Brown gravy could use a bit less salt. Noodles cooked fresh, orange chicken tasty and again fresh. This is home cooked food not microwave Sysco food. Staff friendly and attentive . This is very good spot to eat Chinese food. You can chose between the buffet or just order a plate. When I first walked in to the restaurant I wasn't sure if me & my wife would like it cause it just seemed empty and there was only one couple there. We decided to stay and I will say I'm glad I did. The food was delicious. So overall it's good and it deserves 5 stars, BUT only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the waiter was rude. We usually have a very good meal and experience here. However on Thursday August 11 th we drove from Shelley to celebrate my mothers 73 birthday. This is my mothers favorite Chinese restaurant. So while it isn't the closest one to us, it is her favorite. The meal was ok. But as we were wrapping up, another waitress who was not ours came into the backroom where we were, told us in a tone completely unprofessional that we needed to wrap it up and leave because they needed the table. We told her that we were done and proceeded to leave. Upon entering the main part of the restaurant, half of the tables were empty. Needless to say. That was my last time eating there and probably most everyone's last time eating there. It's sad that in this day and age with businesses failing, someone would risk loosing customers. We went on a Friday night and had the buffet. There were my 3 boys (8, 10 & 12), my husband and I. We loved it all!! Sweet and Sour, Lo Mein, ham fried rice, egg rolls, orange chicken, Chinese donuts, cheese cake and sooo much more was all amazing! They even had Coke products... and drink was included.
