After extensive research, I contacted Dr. Mandel's office and another eye doctor's office to request a consultation (end of July, 2017). They contacted me immediately and I was set to come in for my tests. After obtaining my results, it was determined that I was eligible for PRK Lasik surgery. This type of surgery has a longer recovery period, but it was the safer route for me. We scheduled my surgery for August 23rd, 2017- immediately after I returned from vacation. The operation was quick and successful, I felt great and viewed my surroundings better than I ever had before- we even did the chicken dance ! Day 3 of recovery- I was warned about it and took the proper precautions (dark room, eye drops and a helping hand). For me, it wasn't as torturous as it was for others (there are scary stories out there). I had high-sensitivity to light and my eyes felt like they sting here and there. It was manageable and I did not have to take my strongest medicine to handle it. For the first 3 weeks I was blurry, but my vision was clearly increasing by the day. By September 17th, I was seeing clearly- LESS THAN A MONTH. Now, I hardly recall wearing glasses (I did since I was 10 ! and I could not see a sidewalk signs without them). I have been wearing glasses since I was twelve and always wanted to get rid of them. Twenty years later, I finally made the decision to do just that. I had my LASIK done with Dr. Mandel a week ago and could not be happier. I selected Dr. Mandel because of his excellent ratings and it feels great to be able to add another 5 star rating. During the consultation, he and his staff took the time to make me feel comfortable, explain the procedure and why I'm a good candidate, and answered all of my questions. The actual procedure was painless and very quick. The heeling process was slower than I expected, but a week later I can see 20/20 and my eyes feel pretty comfortable. There is a bit of dryness which is to be expected with LASIK. I've worn glasses for over 20 years and contacts for 13 years and still cannot believe I'm able to see this well with just my eyes. I think he might be on the pricier side, but I was more than happy to pay knowing I was getting the best service for my eyes. I personally don't trust LASIK centers that offer groupons. I want to also add that NYC was still in the COVID lockdown and I was very concerned if this would even be a good time to get the surgery. For anyone else concerned, please note that when you walk in you will be asked to sanitize your hands and put on gloves. You have to wear a mask the entire time and all the staff do as well. I went to Dr. Mandel for lasik on a recommendation from a friend and I'm so happy I did! I started by going to the free consultation and all the staff and Dr. Mandel were very helpful and patient in walking me through the different options (PRK vs lasik) and what to expect. The dr is also so friendly and makes you feel comfortable every step of the way. He also told me that he turns away 20% of patients which made me feel a lot less nervous - I figured if he was taking me on and recommending lasik, he was fully confident all would go smoothly. On the day of the procedure, everyone again was great in making me feel comfortable and making sure I knew what to expect. They even made sure I had all the correct paperwork for insurance. They have massage chairs and snacks while you wait, which is a cute touch. The procedure itself isn't fun, but it's over and done with quickly - and way less scary if you know what to expect. 100% worth it for better vision! Here is my experience getting PRK with Dr Mandel-- My prescription was -7.5 before surgery, and I'm now 20/20. I knew the procedure would significantly improve the quality of my life but I kept putting it off for years - mostly due to my fear of the unknown. **Consultation: Dr Mandel actually told me that my eyes are slightly dry (apparently common with Asians), which can be made worse with Lasik and he recommended I do PRK instead. I was not expecting that at all, since I had been told for years by my eye doctor that I was a good candidate due to my thick cornea, so I never knew dryness could be a factor too. I was extremely apprehensive about PRK, as I had heard about how long the recovery would be. I expressed my concerns, and the doctor was extremely informative and helpful in explaining the process and what I can expect. He said the healing time is different for everyone and that it could take up to 6 months to fully recover but that I would be able to work on the computer (with increased font size) after a few days, and that the results would be better in the long term with less chance of permanent dry eye. **Preparation: I decide to do the PRK, and the doctor recommends a series of things to prepare my eyes, including taking Vitamin C, fish oil, eye gel before bed, over the counter eye drops, as well as some prescription eye drops to make my eyes as wet as possible for the procedure (as weird as that sounds lol). I never noticed my eyes to be dry, so I personally did not notice much of a difference from all these steps, but I figure better safe than sorry right? **Day of Procedure: If you think you'll need it, make sure you ask them to prescribe you Valium ahead of time, since they don't carry it in the office. I was *extremely* nervous the day of, so I took it, but I honestly did not think the Valium made any difference (just a bit sleepy afterwards), but DURING the procedure itself, I was petrified nonetheless. The doctor did tell me every step of the way what he was about to do, what I would feel, etc. First, you lay down on the machine, and they apply numbing drops to your eyes. Then, they brush your eyes (feels like a slight tickle) and then you're told to stare at the black dot in front of you while there is a bright light flashing around it, which is kind of distracting and I think my eyeball reared off a bit because the doctor reminds me to look forward and I think to myself, oh crap am I going to go blind? Anyway, the entire procedure takes about 5 minutes or so, but probably the scariest 5 minutes of my life. Let me just clarify, it was not painful at all (maybe a bit uncomfortable at times), but I was crippled in fear despite the doctor's best efforts to keep me calm. Keep in mind, I am like the biggest scaredy cat with zero pain tolerance, basically a big baby. Anyway, the procedure is done and the doctor helps me sit back up. My vision is not perfect, but clearer than it was before, and I feel okay, no pain or anything. I recommend getting the procedure done later in the day like I did, so you can just go home and sleep. The next few days would be uncomfortable to say the least, but it was honestly not as bad as I had imagined. The pain was tolerable, and I never needed more than just Tylenol. I wore dark sunglasses around the house. Note: This was all during COVID, and the office took all a lot of safety measures such as requiring masks upon entering and providing you gloves once you go inside. Their waiting room is very spacious and there was never more than 2-3 people there at a time, so easily more than 6 feet apart. **Final thoughts: To anyone considering laser eye surgery, I highly recommend at least seeking a consultation with Dr Mandel. He is funny and straight forward (he and his team never came off as salesy to me). The pricing was the same for Lasik vs PRK and he explained the pros and cons so I could make an informed decision. He was also easy to reach out whenever I had questions (he gave me his direct number that I could text or call). As for how my eyes are now, I do not have issues with seeing halos and the dryness is only minimal - I do occasionally still use eye drops. My eyes do seem more sensitive to light and I wear sunglasses whenever I am outside to protect my eyes. Despite these minor side effects, I'm glad I don't need to fuss with contacts anymore. read more

I'm happy to do that for them, and they deserve all the recognition they get.* Let's take it from the beginning. Setting up an appointment is a BREEZE, as Mandel Vision is set up in the most up to date methods of e-appointments. Coming into the office, I'm greeted by the lovely staff at the front desk who are always on top of things and always so kind and accommodating. From there, someone (I think Kim) took me through the majority of my consultation tests. It was a thorough set of tests that took maybe 45+ minutes, that yielded a small book that told the story of my eyes. The consultation process felt almost too quick, as if I was caught up in the flow of things and some more explanation of what each test was measuring would help, but it later turned out their breezy attitude was because they're all so good at what they do and this confidence would provide comfort later on. Dr. Mandel then comes in where he explains the two types of procedures he does and which one he recommends and why. He recommended PRK and informed me that if there are any risks involved in one procedure or the other, he will flat out not offer it. So that makes me feel very comfortable that if Dr Mandel gives the thumbs up, he feels 100% confident. BUT, he told me to take care of my eyes (gave me instructions) and that on the day of the procedure, they would go through all the tests again to see how healthy my eyes are, and if I am eligible and I want to, I could do LASIK. Then another wonderful woman (I forget her name, sorry!) comes in to go through the details of cost, scheduling, etc. Mandel Vision is a more expensive place to get the procedure, some will say. But honestly, it's par for the course if you want someone this qualified, which this kind of track record, with this wonderful of a staff. I also NEED my eyes for my work, so I can't take any risks. Leading up to the surgery, Missy called me to tell me what prescriptions were put in at my local pharmacy and how I would have to administer them before coming in. On the day of the surgery, Missy took me through the entire set of tests again. She would do a test several times, saying, "I'm persistent!" And I don't mind at all! I want someone who has my best interest in mind and someone who clearly is good at and loves to do what she does. So that helped assuage my nerves! I was one of the last patients of the day so I had to wait a bit. I had some snacks and sat in the massage chair in the "relaxation room" and Dr Mandel and I chatted for a bit. Then Dr Mandel "designed" my eyes and I went into the operating room. The whole operation was very quick, but I was quite distressed during it. It's an uncomfortable operation, but it doesn't hurt. Dr Mandel hummed and guided my breaths throughout. The technician ( I think that's her role, I'm sorry I forgot your name!) was also very nice and funny and talked during the operation to help keep an air of normalcy and calm. Dr Mandel could tell I was very anxious afterward so he assured me all went well and that it's all over. After my two post op check ups, he said I'm on my way to a 20/20 vision, most likely, and that everything is healing great. I still have some halo-ing and slight blurriness with screens, but my eyesight is leap and bounds better than it was. I haven't had an eye test yet, so I can't say how good my vision is. Let me begin by saying that Dr. Mandel and his team are wonderful humans. They made what I thought was impossible a reality. It's been about three weeks since I had both Lasik and PRK at Mandel Vision. After a lengthy, thorough (and complimentary) consultation, Dr. Mandel decided that I was a candidate for LASIK in one eye but not the other, so I ended up getting experience with both! My LASIK eye was absolutely perfect after I woke up from my post-surgery nap. PRK takes longer to heal, maybe two months-ish, and day-by-day, I am seeing improvement (blurriness is fading, less halos). They also give you really easy-to-understand pre-op and post-op instructions so that your eyes come out a success. I wake up everyday surprised that I don't need glasses or contacts to see! I was super impressed with everyone at Mandel Vision every step of this process, from the booking, to front desk, to all the really friendly and expert techs, and last but certainly not least, Dr. Mandel's caring jovial manner helped me stay calm during this process. I've thought about how to write this review for over a week now. Its difficult to put into words a review of being under the care of someone who gave you more than perfect vision! The exams, the procedure, the staff, Dr. Mandel, they were all so great and very thorough. These people know what they're doing and they do it well. I had -6.75 in both eyes. I basically couldn't recognize your face without contacts/glasses even if we were sitting at the same table. I was pretty nervous about the procedure, but I tried not to think about it much. The wait was a bit nerve-wracking. As you can imagine, Dr Mandel and his staff keep very busy! But once it was time, I was talked through everything before, during and after the procedure, which by the way was done in around 6-8 minutes. IT IS SO QUICK. After Dr. Mandel corrected my right eye, I could already see pretty well out of it. Things were a little blurry. After the second eye, I sat in a room for a few minutes and was talked through the aftercare eye drops and care. I could already see pretty well. It is so fascinating! It was definitely nice to have someone pick you up and put you in an car and get you home quickly! You'll need to sleep for at least 5-6 hours and then again for the rest of the night. Artificial tears/re-wetting drops are key! The 2 follow up appts are quick and easy. I have 20/15 vision now - which is better than 20/20. Dr. Mandel is simply exceptional! My uncorrected vision was around -8.5 for both eyes. I initially had concerns about the recovery after PRK surgery since my myopia is relatively high, but everything worked out just fine. Now, after 9 months from the surgery, both of my eyes are 20/15. Maybe a bit of dryness sometimes since my eyes had always been dry even before the surgery, but definitely not as bad as I imagined it would be. I'll continue taking the eye drops as Dr. Mandel instructed, hopefully it'll be better as the recovery is still ongoing. I cannot recommend Dr. Mandel and his team highly enough! I had PRK surgery with Dr. Mandel in March of 2019. From the initial consultation, through the procedure itself and the post-op check-ups, everything was great. Dr. Mandel is a pleasure, he's funny and down to earth. He reassured my parents that the procedure was safe and made them comfortable with my decision. I want to start off by saying that I would highly recommend getting LASIK with doctor Mandel. It's been one week after my surgery and I can see 20-15 (I was -6.5 in both eyes with astigmatism), and I'm beyond happy with my results and their care. The main reason I started researching LASIK was because my contacts were starting to bother me after 17 years of using them. I could only wear them for a couple hours a day and some days not at all. After asking friends who had it done and checking reviews on different sites, Dr. Mandel kept coming up as the best in the field. My consultation was extremely thorough. Missy - my consultant - was extremely professional and even redid a test because she wasn't 100% satisfied with it. This gave me so much reassurance because obviously I wanted everything to go perfectly. I had to wear my glasses for three weeks prior to the surgery and they told me to call with any questions in between that time - and I sure did! One question that haunted me: when the optometrist checked my vision at the consultation with all those different lenses, what if I made a mistake and the 2nd lens was better than the 1st lens??! Answer: They check your vision with the lenses but also with other machines to makes sure they have your prescription perfect. In fact, they redo all the vision tests before the surgery to make sure everything checks out. I had other questions about the drops and what I can and cannot do after the surgery. They gave me so much reassurance, and I went into the surgery confident that I was in good hands. Right after my surgery (which was quick and easy),, Dr. Mandel helped me off the surgery chair and I could see - blurry with tearing eyes from the surgery but I knew I could see. It was amazing. I went to bed an hour later. No significant pain (slight discomfort) but my eyes were still blurry. I woke up 6 hours later to use the bathroom and all discomfort was gone and the blurriness had been reduced significantly. I was astounded. I slept for another 5 hours and when I woke up my vision was even better, the blurriness was basically gone. I went to work that day feeling like a miracle was performed on me. Before: -6.25 in both eyes Now: 20/15 in both eyes. No halos, no dry eye, no contacts, no regrets! Seriously, my eyesight is bonkers. I didn't know it was possible for eyes to see this well. The consultation was onerous and protracted in the most delightful way possible. You're about to shoot lasers into my eye? Sure you don't wanna run that test a third time? Can I ask you more questions? More still? I'm still nervous, so I'm gonna ask you questions that are only going to make me sound stupid or like I don't trust you. You're still sitting there, you're still answering my questions, smiling, and treating me kindly and with patience. That's legit. I loved that it was pretty clear that he was more than happy to turn me away if I wasn't a good candidate. Not gonna, lie, tho, the actual procedure was a bit freakier than I expected it to be, or maybe it's more fair to say that I freaked out more than I expected to. Yet, even in the middle of my mid-procedure freak-out, Dr. Mandel kept me cool and kept his cool. I turned out to be a bit of a worrier, more so than expected, and Dr. Mandel and his staff (who are all top-notch amazing) stayed patient and calm. Before getting lasik, I would joke that were I were to ever do it, I would find the most expensive place and do it there. Turns out that was the case, but only because my suspicion seems to have been correct: Find the most expensive place and you find the most selective, most careful, most up-to-date place with the best track record (even in a field with a generally really high satisfaction rate). Furthermore, even though I'm sure Dr. Mandel is really happy about the sweet, sweet bank he's making, he seems just as happy about doing a good job and doing good work. I liked that. When I talk to people about the procedure, I say good things, and when they ask me if they would recommend it, I say "I would recommend going to Dr. Mandel." read more

The relaxation in a massage chair prior to the procedure was very helpful in keeping me calm and relaxed. I did have a slight complication, an allergic reaction to one of the drops but Dr. Mandel picked up his phone at nearly midnight to explain and reassure that its a reaction around the eye and will not effect my vision. From the consultation to the follow-up appointments, I always felt that I was in good hands with Dr. Mandel and his team. I found his practice through online research and read Yelp reviews and perused his website before scheduling a consultation. After the consultation I felt very comfortable having Dr. Mandel perform my LASIK procedure. Not only were his staff friendly and efficient, Dr. Mandel himself was professional and seemed like he really cared about helping me attain perfect vision. The procedure itself was short and Dr. Mandel was reassuring throughout. When it was done, I was amazed to be able to see things out the window. Before LASIK, I was very nearsighted and had astigmatism in both eyes, so I couldn't see anything more then a few inches past my face. Immediately afterwards, I could see several yards away, and after going home and taking a nap, I woke up to perfect vision. I know Dr. Mandel is not the cheapest doctor performing LASIK, but if you're considering undergoing the procedure, please do yourself a favor and pay for the best. My experience at Mandel Vision has been great from start to (almost) finish - still have one more visit or so to go. Dr. Mandel performed PRK surgery on my eyes a little over a month and a half ago and I could not be more pleased by my experience. From my first visit, Dr. Mandel's staff was attentive and thorough, all of my questions were answered prior to the surgery, and my concerns were addressed. They performed a thorough examination before the surgery, were great during the day of the actual surgery at making such a nerve-racking thing (surgery is never easy) feel less stressful, and provided excellent aftercare and instructions. Dr. Mandel's bedside manner is also great, which makes every visit pleasant as well. I highly recommend Dr. Mandel's office to anyone who is considering Lasik or PRK because if you're going to trust someone with your only pair of eyes, you definitely want the best in the biz. During my consultation, I was told that only my right eye qualified for Lasik. Dr. Mandel clearly and concisely explained to me each of my options: 1) Lasik in one eye and PRK in the other, 2) PRK in both eyes, or 3) no procedure at all. He also made sure to address any questions or concerns I had about each option to make sure I was as informed as possible. After weighing the pros and cons, I ultimately decided on Option 1. I had my procedure in late July of this year, and there was an immediate improvement in BOTH eyes, despite discomfort for about a week or so in the PRK eye. It's been a little under 2 months, and my vision is significantly better than when I wore glasses/contacts. Getting the surgery and using Mandel Vision was life changing, and I have zero regrets. read more
