This place is more novelty than anything. It's about as aggressive 1930's American-themed as it gets. It's in a cute little, well, railway diner-style compartment. The staff is so kind, with smiles all around. The food, however, varies quite dramatically. The first thing to note is that the prices aren't too bad. You can get your fill for under €10 here. Their burgers and fries are delicious. The burgers especially are quite large. Their steaks are pretty disappointing, though. I asked for mine to be medium rare and it came out well done. The fat wasn't marbled and was just in one strip, even though I had ordered the ribeye (this was likely not a ribeye). The salad that I ordered was heavily DRENCHED in dressing and cheese, and there was little variety of greens and other assortments in it. My friend had ordered the Mac-and-cheese, and it was hands down the worst we've ever had. It looked very liquid-y, much closer to a soup, which initially we assumed was cream and cheese, but upon eating it, we figured out it was actually WATERY. Germans apparently don't know how to make Mac-and-cheese. I've had better $1 instant mac-and-cheeses. The waitress, though, noticed we didn't like it and ended up not charging us for it. Seriously, cannot stress how kind the wait staff is. I'd still definitely come back. As a frequent guest, I can summarize Mandy's in few simple points from different perspectives Food: 1- great diner food, weather you go for either a burger or a club sandwich! It's excellent and I personally find it better than most diners found in the US. 2- burgers are not the best, but yet delicious! 3- personally speaking their breakfast is the best and u can't go wrong with any of their breakfast menu items- I always go with the oriental express which appears in the photo. However, going with simple bagel is a great choice too. Service: A bit slow whether they're full or not. Their service is inconsistent, some of their waitresses are keen to please and they acknowledge the slow service. Whilst some don't care. STAY AWAY FROM THAT RAFAELA WAITRESS- she snaps and screams at guests occasionally with no apparent reason! Or simply rude at her best! Atmosphere: Top! Genuine! And got great vibes! Love the railway! Price: You can't go wrong! I haven't seen cheaper and money worth in all of Heidelberg! Mandy's Railway Diner, an American style diner in Heidelberg, Germany. A home away from home. The decoration alone brings back beautiful memories of the US and American history. It is not a big place, but big enough to have an enjoyable meal with friends and family. Usually there is an average wait time of 10 minutes to get a table. Mandy 's has delicious burgers, salads and milkshakes in addition to the tradidional coffee, pankackes, eggs and bacon. Interesting decor and atmosphere inside the Diner. I came for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Let me start with an overview statement: This was the worst breakfast I have had in a while. The pancakes had a texture like cardboard - the taste was more like the aged grease on the grill. Also had the Texas steak and eggs with home fries. I asked for the steak to be cooked all the way through so that it was not bloody - waitstaff brought me a dried out hockey puck of steak which barely tasted like beef. The scrambled eggs that ordered were acceptable and the home fries were ok. This is a good place if you have low standards of what an American breakfast should be. I would not recommend this place to anyone. It so probable that this place was Rockin' about 10 years ago and had good quality to have lasted this long, but those days are over. Lastly, I would think the kitchen probably needs a "Top to Bottom" Health Inspection as well. WORST AMERICAN BREAKFAST EVER!!!! P.S. The sign outside says: "Welcome to Heidelberg's MANDY'S GRILL... The location is fine for us, 10min from Hbf. The place is fun and enjoyable. The food is ok. We both ordered pancake. Looking at the menu we were like 2 pancake for each, is it enough for us? But when they got on the table, those pancakes were huge. As for the flavor, huh~, average is the word I would say. Or maybe just acceptable. Nothing surprise. Ok, ok, Not as good as IHOP. read more

Coming from North America, I was super excited to hear about this "American" diner. Sadly, it did does not live up to its name. Decor was great. Service was excellent. Food was lacklustre. I had the turkey club and it was sloppily but together..... all our plates were. Barely anything was fresh. Processed cheese, jarred salsa, processed meat. I instand it's an American-style restaurant, but they don't have to use the cheap gross American products. I also tried my friends Texas burger and it was disgusting! A thick and spongy patty with cold jarred salsa... not good. And for the price I was expecting good quality food. My processed sandwich was definitely not work €7.50! The worst part was that everything was à la carte.... every true American diner I've been served all meals with fries.... not an extra €4.00!! Yes, my sandwich cane with a handful of store-bought chips (crisps), but they were if the cheapest quality and not enjoyable. The only saving grace was the milkshake and that's be the only reason I'd go back there. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere and service, but I won't be going there anytime soon and I do t recommend it to anyone. If you want a real burger, I recommend Mahlzeit. €10-12 gets you an amazing fresh burger, fries, and a drink. Fresh food fir a good price... the opposite of this diner. read more

I give this place 5-stars because the food was amazing and the staff were super friendly. Make no mistake, you will wait for your food. But the diner atmosphere is great and the food is worth the wait. The teeny tiny kitchen (which you can totally see) turns out food fast. The wait staff work hard. The line is out the door. If you are looking for fine dining service, this isn't your place. But if you are looking for some diner nostalgia with burgers, big breakfasts, and salads that will feed the entire family then you came to the right place. read more

The draw of it being a seemingly nice, American style diner with fun menu items you can't find anywhere else might trick you into thinking it'll be good. I've had a bad experience either with quality of food or bad service almost every time I've been here, parking is horrible, food is never as good as it sounds in the menu, and the prices are way too high for how simple some of these things are to prepare. We finally had to decide to never go there again even if it's late and not much else is open. You'll get better prices, food, service and a shorter wait time just going to the McDonald's around the block. read more

I can see the charm of Mandy's that draws diners there: the diner railway car, the kitschy American memorabilia posted everywhere from top to bottom, and the typical American diner fare. However, I find the place overhyped and overrated. The wait was always long, and the servers were hardly friendly if we asked them about the wait ("Just put your name on the list, and you will be called when it's your turn..."). The burgers were good but not worth the long wait. I've tried their shrimp poppers, which was 80% overfried batter and 20% tiny shrimps, and onion rings, which consisted of 4 medium-sized onion rings covered in oversized and overfried batter. Better skip the appetizers and go for the burgers if you must go there. Random story: Once while I was dining there, they played the same 50s song on repeat for almost 20 minutes. This is one of the coolest, most authentic American diners I have been to in Germany. It was hard to pick a meal because everything on the menu looked delicious. The food was 10/10, I got the corned beef hash breakfast and it came out super quickly. The workers work extremely hard, from the moment I walked in the kitchen was cranking out food and doing so quickly and efficiently. Highly recommend. Location: Dude, this place looks so awesome. Everything has a american diner style, which I havent seen somewhere else in Germany. All these nice posters and badges on the wall and the fact, that this is a waggon ... totally flashed by the looks.+ PS: Has parking lots and also good to get there by public transport (very central) Service: The place is a little bit crowded and sometimes you have to wait in line to get in there. But this is only, because this is no secret, but one of the best placed to go. And the staff do their best to satisfy the customers. Very friendly and fast. Food: This tastes totally american. They did not only NOT ask how I wanted to have patty, medium rare, through etc., but it was really pressed hard, wayyy too long cooked through and the meat tasted really cheap. I grew up in Heidelberg and until i left Germany in 2008 it was by far my most favorite place to eat!!! A few days ago (I'm here to visit family) I went back with my kids and I was utterly disappointed!!! First of all: you can't run an "American diner" and not offer a menu in English!!! The service was lousy, the guy was lucky I didn't feel like waiting for my change! The interior is still full of flair and the food is still great, but I was devastated they don't have the legendary breakfasts anymore, I was quite heartbroken over it. My girlfriend found this place as a treat because after being in Europe two weeks I was dying for a good burger... What a mistake! There burgers were big, that is a plus but otherwise they were garbage. Not sure if it is low quality meat or if it was just cooked until it became bland and tasteless. I was told that this restaurant is a "must do," especially for Americans in Germany. I went with my girlfriend and we ordered the farmer's burger and club sandwich. The food wasn't bad for what we paid for it and was served promptly, but I was very disappointed to see that the burger didn't come with fries, so I ordered some. Word to the wise: unless you want to wait forever, this is a bad idea. Apparently it takes them much longer to make french fries than a burger. If you can't order them at the same time, don't bother. The fries were OK, but I didn't want them by the time they arrived. What really ruined the experience was when we brought this up to the waitress and she argued with us.
