I had a haircut and style done by Ashley, and she was phenomenal. I simply love, love, love my haircut and style!

I came here to announce that I have officially cut off the last of that god forsaken bleach job! Took forever but I'm finally back to my natural healthy curls and color. I also didn't want to originally even dignify the response from the business owner because it was extremely defensive and actively not true but I might as well along side my happy update: Hi Ashley, What you said is not true. I very clearly stated that I wanted my roots done, which was clearly need at the time as I had let my roots grow out to about three inches. My roots were bad and i was coming to you guys with a very simple task. The first thing I was told when I sat in the chair (and was previously told when I had gotten a haircut there prior) is that I have "a lot of hair". The implication that my amount of hair is a burden to the stylist and therefore means she will not have enough time to do what I asked is ridiculous. If you can't deal with curly hair, then say that. What you do is have the respect to me and for yourself, to say im sorry i can't do your hair. "She tried to accommodate you best as her schedule would allow without turning you away" that sounds like a problem with her schedule also you could have JUST TURNED ME AWAY. I would fully understand if someone said that for whatever reason they couldn't do my hair, I would prefer that to what happened. "Your ends had a previous color on them" yes and I made that clear in booking and in the appointment that I have previous color. "You were charged for each of your services because the 1st service was a partial foil and the next was to complete the rest of your hair to make it a full foil" I asked to get my roots done, i did not have that happen for some reason, yes roots is a partial foil. But what she did was put them on the front of my hair for some reason and on half of my roots. The 2nd service was a redo to fix the mistake YOU GUYS MADE, the only was to fix the mistake was to make the rest of my head match. I was charged for an appointment to fix the mistake you guys made. I am most upset about them money wasted (god i can't believe I tipped both times, but I was a freaked out teen who was just trying to be nice) and your attitude. The work was incompetent, and instead of saying, we're sorry for the bad job done by a stylist who (if im not mistaken was still in cosmetology school) or for miscommunication during the appointment (though I know I was very clear on the task of lightening my roots to match the rest of my hair). Instead I was gaslighted down into thinking it wasn't a big deal (that you ruined my curly hair that was down to my back) and that it was my fault? I had been getting my hair bleached for about two years at that point, i knew what i was asking for. I would still lovingly accept a refund and proof of certification for that stylist. read more

I can only speak about Ashley, the owner. She did a great job putting some accent color (red) into my long blondish, greyish hair. I was her last client of the evening, but she didn't rush me or even let me know until the end that she was going home after our appt. The color she did was exactly like the inspiration photos I had, and she went the extra mile to put some lighter highlights in for contrast. I will return to her when the pretty red accents fade. Ashley gave me a deva cut and she is so kind, thorough, and patient. I was having a really bad day and when I had my appointment, my first with this salon, I was feeling very sad about life, hopeless and old. I'm rather embarrassed that I let my sorrowful mood show so much, especially with a person I was meeting for the first time, but Ashley was patient and kind, and when I left the salon I felt so much better (and looked significantly better, too!) than I did when I walked in. Best haircut I've ever had! Ashley was a genius stylist with my hair. Far superior service to the popular upscale Newburyport salon and just as nice of an environment. I've lived my whole life with frizzy hair covered in split ends and no one could ever explain why or how to fix it. Until Ashley! She told me it was all quite literally from being too rough in brushing my hair and shampooing everyday. Ever since I've been treating my hair very gently like a baby and it's softer, silkier, and overall way healthier than I ever imagined it could be. Who would have thought! i went to the this salon the other day and I had Makayla as a hairstylist. I asked for about 3 in off and showed her where i would like it to land. She was very nice but when i looked in the mirror i had about 5 to 6 inches off which is a big difference. I left the salon trying to be positive but when i got home and looked in the mirror a bit longer i was very upset. I called her the next day to tell her I did not like my hair and that she had cut it way to short and she did not even apologize and tried to blame it on me. I think it was very unprofessional and i will never return there again. read more

Girls day for my moms 60th and our Mother's day gifts, suddenly went from fun to shocking! Rhonda the manager was so accommodating when I called to book our appointments. I was excited thinking it was going to be amazing. Let's talk about how unprofessional the two girls who were assigned to do our nails and toes. The one girl who greeted us was visibly flustered/told us she was overwhelmed. She blamed the front desk for not making things clear to her. Told us she typically doesn't do nails and toes, neither did the other girl who was working on us. WHICH WAS EVIDENT. My nails didn't even receive a top coat. Pictures below was the very next morning. And we paid for the upgraded nail polish. Ridiculous. They kept trashing the front desk blaming themfor everything. They also did not know what went into each service we were getting. I could go on and on, how I soaked my feet for an hour and a half then ended with a 10 minute pedicure.... they forgot I was there I had to speak up and ask when it was my turn.... But I'll keep it simple, if your looking to have a nice day and relaxing... DO NOT GO HERE. The place is gorgeous, but the staff is undertrained, and it's ridiculous we even paid a dollar for this service. Worst spa treatments I have ever received. Completely let down... read more

For all of those that still go to Newbury Street for hair and spa treatments, listen up. Essencia is located in adorable Amesbury, about 45 minutes north of Boston. I heard of the salon through my stylist Kristina, formerly of Aaqua Blue in Newburyport. She recently became part of the Essencia team and since I will follow her wherever she goes, I visited the new salon. Upon walking in, I was greeted with a smile and filled out a new customer form. I was given delicious cucumber lemon water as I waited for my manicure and pedicure with Betsy. (I love that I can get another spa treatment when I get my haircut with Kristina!) Betsy did an AMAZING job, trimming every cuticle. She was so friendly and very passionate about what she does. The nail salon was very clean and comfortable as well. After my nails, I saw Kristina for a much-needed haircut. As I sat in the chair, she pulls up a cut on Pinterest that she saw and thought of me. What other stylist would ever do that? Essencia uses Wella products, which are new to me but smell amazing. Kristina gave a great wash, cut and blow dry. I called on a whim to try to get a partial foil, they were able to get me in for an appointment with Liz that day. I am so glad I got in! Liz asked what I wanted and really seemed to understand what I was going for. She was very friendly and welcoming. My color was absolutely perfect! Liz did an amazing job and I couldn't be happier with the way my hair looks. The salon itself is clean and very chic. Everyone was nice and welcoming. Only downfall with this salon is it's cash tips only, so I had to run to the ATM down the street to get tip money after my appointment. I am very please and looking forward to going back. read more

I have been to a number of different spas/salons and Essencia definitely makes the top of my list! With a luxurious and upscale environment, you feel instantly relaxed when you walk through the door. They have some amazing products for sale that work really well, specifically the hair care products they offer are awesome. I go to Natalie to get my hair cut, colored, and styled and she is by far the best!! She is young and really understands what I am looking for..I always leave smiling, loving my new hair! She does a fantastic job, and for the price you pay you'll love your hair even more!! I have yet to go to the spa, but last time Natalie gave me a tour and I was soothed by the peaceful and luxurious atmosphere. I can't wait to get a massage next time! For senior prom my friend and I decided to get our hair done at Divine Salon & Spa. This was not our first choice, but in the end it was the only available option. This was a huge mistake and we were of course upset with the results, but more dissatisfied with the customer service. We arrived 30 minutes early to each get our hair done by the same stylist - loose curls with a braid meeting in the back & loose curls with a fishtail meeting in the back. Our appointments were each supposed to take and hour, but she was able to complete our prom hairstyles in one hour combined. As she was doing my friends hair, she told her that she did not know how to do a fishtail. Though not everyone can do this on hair, a "senior hairstylist" should know how to. My friend showed her dissatisfaction, but we were both such in a rush that we left and had one of our friends fix what had been done. Our friend that was a lifesaver for our prom could have probably done our hair free of charge, and most definitely better than our stylist. We left with our hair falling from insecurity from the lack of bobby-pins and an over-usage of hairspray. The total came out to $85 each, not including tip. A day or two later we called the front desk asking voicing our dissatisfaction, and she told us that she would have the manager call us shortly. A WEEK LATER we received a call telling us that essentially our stylist did not agree with our hair styles and tried to warn us. This is not at all true and we showed her pictures of what we wanted. These photos of which we showed her looked nothing like our hair at all in the end. I understand that sometimes the results do not satisfy in the end, but what really upset us was the interaction that we had with the management of the spa. The most important thing in running a business is customer satisfaction. Knowing that Divine Salon & Spa is under new management and used to be under another name, I think that it is in your best interest to go to Interlocks, Bernadette's, SKYY, GLOW, or elsewhere. read more

Over the winter we went in for a couples massage. The ladies were so friendly and made me feel very comfortable. The spa was clean and calming. We also had time to use the sauna prior to the massage and that was great! Excellent way to warm up and pamper ourselves on a cold winter Saturday. read more

I would have given this 4 or 5 stars. We spent about a thousand bucks there (no small trip). The staff seemed nice enough; and the interiors were quite lovely. My one complaint while being there was that they were disorganized. They had us booked for things we had never requested and forgot to have us down for things we did request. I was relatively pleased with everything else, though. UNTIL A few hours after leaving, we received a phone call from the owner/manager (?! not sure of her exact position). She LEFT A MESSAGE telling us that we did not leave enough money to tip the girls! She actually had the gall to suggest we swing by and drop off more money, at our earliest convenience, of course. I finally found a salon that knows curls! Go to see Gina she is Deva Curl, cut, certified. Gina shaped and cut my kinky, curly hair, plus fixed my color! I have never been to a salon that knows how to style my curls before, it was a great salon experience. I was welcomed in from the rain with a nice cup of tea, and Gina gave me a great consultation to make sure my style was exactly what I wanted. I am so happy I finally found a stylist after moving to the beach area! I highly recommend Essencia! Also just for checking in, I got a free brow wax on Yelp. read more

I had my haircut by Gina and she took my really long, dried out, frizzy hair and made it look shiny and healthy again. I usually don't write reviews, but I am really pleased with my results. Gina took her time with my cut, and in my experience, most stylists rush through the cut to get to the blow dry because of how long my hair is. I felt like she was very meticulous and focused on the style that I asked for. I will definitely be back to see her. I even bought a product from the salon which I also never do, so needless to say, I am a happy customer! read more

First off they were able to accommodate TWO walk in facial at that moment which i didn't think we would have had a shot at getting done. Girl at the front desk was very friendly and welcoming despite seeming busy and overwhelmed. She still took the time to take our coats make sure we had everything we needed and answer any questions never making us feel rushed or ignored. Price was comparable to other facials in the area. Environment was set out in an enclosed area off of the hair salon dimly lit with tea, coffee, cucumber water, reading material and comfy chairs. Nice. Clean. Similar to other places I have been. Exactly What your thinking a small day spa would look like THE TREATMENT!! I wish I could give MORE than 5 stars for the actual facial. My facial was done by a women named Nikki she basically made me feel as though I had melted into a bed of pure and complete body relaxation. I was transported into some alternate universe where I had never before been (I am NOT exaggerating friends) I have had many facials before but this women went BEYOND any experience I've ever had. She used each minute of the time to engage my senses and really went the extra mile. I have been getting my hair done here since last summer. I've really enjoyed it so far. I'm in my 20s, and unfortunately have enough grey hairs to warrant getting my hair colored every 8 weeks! For a few years now, I've been using permanent color, including since I've gone to Essencia. However, they recently started using a new color line, and my stylist Natalie suggested I try their semi-permanent rather than permanent. It's probably hard to believe since I'm only in my 20s, but I really do have some stubborn greys. I gave the semi permanent a shot, and it looks awesome!! It's so natural, and the way it works with greys, it almost looks like I have subtle highlight - you can't tell I have any greys, and you can't tell I color my hair. Anyway - super pleased with the color! I also recently got a new, shorter cut there - one that I was hesitant to do for along time. Natalie never tried to make me cut it when I wasn't ready, but she also had a perfect cut in mind for when I decided it was time for a change. That quality is really important to me in a stylist, because I never want to feel pressured into a new look that I'm not ready for. My mother actually goes to her now too, and is very particular about keeping a certain look with her hair. A lot of my friends get their hair done by her too, and always love their haircuts and/or color. I haven't tried any of the other services there, but plan on it. It seems like they have good quality services that are less expensive than equivalent spas/salons in the area. Also noticed that they offer last minute deals on Facebook, which I'd like to take advantage of but am always at work when they happen...bummer (massage, pedi, facials etc) FYI they can't include tip on debit/credit card purchases - it has to be cash. I recently had a facial done. The welcoming at the reception did not give me a good vibe, the receptionist was on the phone, and the person assigned to my facial was chatting to another girl. Nobody seemed too bothered. The facial itself was OK. I had facials done elsewhere where the whole experience was extremely relaxing and peaceful. The esthetician did not try to connect with me at all, she just did her job but was not overly friendly and did not seem to care. She tried selling me some products on my way out. I would choose a different place next time I need a facial. read more

My friend and I had came in to get an updo hair style for prom that day. I came in and showed the "senior updo stylist" a picture of what I wanted, it was loose curls with a fishtail braid in the back (which is not too difficult considering I can do a fishtail myself) and she said she was unable to do to a fishtail, a SENIOR HAIR STYLIST!! Then she proceeded to do a braid that I was very unhappy with and the braid fell out right as I left. My friend was next to get her hair done and she had wanted something similar to me which unfortunately could not be done by this "hair stylist". My friends hair was not secured at all, it completely fell out after we left. Also to be considered she finished both of our updos in 30 minutes, she did not take her time at all or put any effort into it. After we left we called our friend (who was not a hair stylist) and she had fixed our hair for prom and was in awe of how badly it was done especially since we payed 85 dollars for each hairstyle. I had called this salon and wanted to complain about the horrible service my friend and I received and the owner was supposed to call back and then a week later still no call, I then called back again and the owner had the front desk lady call me, the owner didn't even have the audacity to call me back. I have tried so many day spa/ salons and by far Essencia is the all time BEST! I get my waxing done by Ula who is so experienced and does the best job, I'm very picky when it comes to my eyebrows and she is the only one who has been able to make them look PERFECT! I get my hair cut by Natalie who is also so professional and does a GREAT job. I have never left Essencia unhappy. The atmosphere is so nice and calming and it's a great place to go and relax and get your services done with friendly and very knowledgeable professionals. I have noticed that there are a lot of spa's/salons in Amesbury. I cannot imagine that any can compare with Essencia. The first time I set foot in this place, I was impressed with the calm and peaceful atmosphere. Marie gave me a tour of the facility. Hair salon, manicure/pedicure room, his and hers shower rooms, massage rooms and facial/treatment rooms. All that plus a wonderful steam room. We have gone twice now for couples massages. Amanda and Janice are both great massage therapists. After our massages, they brought us robes and we sat in the steam room for awhile. We freshened up, and were seated in the spa waiting area where we were served refreshing cucumber water, cheese and crackers and chocolate covered strawberries. Pure heaven. Relatively new, Essencia has a limited staff. Because of this, you want to book in advance - I assure you that it is well worth it (there is a reason that the word "Therapy" is in the title)!!! read more

I love getting a manicure from Toni- she is simply the BEST! She is down to earth and she makes you feel very comfortable. I also see Cheryl for massages- she is wonderful - she is an expert at finding and working on all those knotted muscles. Shannon, the esthetician, does a great job shaping my brows. I've been getting my eyebrows done here for over four years and a few weeks ago I had an appointment and I arrived 5 minutes early. They took me early and starting working on my eyebrows, but then another employee knocked on the door to tell her that there was a client getting her hair done that had an appointment before me. She stopped working on me and then had me wait in the waiting room after she had already started on me. I was only 5 minutes early, which means the other client was late. They always do a great job, but they have very poor customer service. This isn't the first time I've had issues with them. read more

I have been a client at just about every salon in the Newburyport area and have even traveled to boston to get my hair done and am always less than satisfied. My hair is pretty difficult to work with as it's thick and wavy and I damage it like crazy with my hair straightener. I went to Essencia for the first time a couple months ago and fell in love. Not only was my stylist truthful about the condition of my hair, but she also made me feel like there was hope to make my hair healthy again without chopping it all off (I have long hair and prefer to keep it that way). My stylist, Natalie, gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I walked out of the salon with what felt like brand new hair. She listened to me and kept my length while also giving my hair texture and health. I also got my hair colored and love it! It hasnt faded and looks so natural. My overall experience at Essencia was outstanding as everyone is friendly and personable and really listen to what you want. I highly recommend Essencia to anyone. read more
