This place was actually really refreshing to visit. It's an upscale-ish Jamaican restaurant, serving traditional Jamaican food with a twist. Me and my friends ordered the ackee and saltfish eggrolls, the oxtail curry, and the shrimp. The eggrolls were phenomenal. It really was a cool Jamaican/Asian fusion dish. I think the oxtail could use a little bit of work. It definitely more sweet than savory. I also wish that the oxtail had more meat than bones. The ambience is very trendy. They do have an upstairs, with a really nice spiral staircase going up. Our waitress and hostess were great. All in all, this is a solid place to get some drinks and dinner. It's nothing out of this world, but with a couple of girlfriends or for date night, this could definitely be an option. read more

I've had Mango Bay on my list for so long, but the operation hours never align with my random schedule. Sad to say, I was very underwhelmed with most of my experience. I was attending a birthday dinner, got there early and was seated at the bar. I sat there for 15 minutes before either one of the men said anything to me, yet, they both looked at me several times. One of them was in and out of the back, but stopped, asked if the other guy had greeted me, and then he politely took my order. For the party, they had a prefix menu, with only 2 appetizer choices and 3 entrees. The food was just ok. The Saltfish Eggrolls were better tasting than I thought they would be. For my entree I had Escovitch Salmon, which I didn't really care for. The mocktails I had weren't a hit either. They didn't offer dessert with the prefix. The waiter that we had wasn't friendly. As he was taking orders, I motioned to ask him a question and he put his finger up at me, which I felt was very rude. They asked him to take a group picture and he brushed them off, and the lady who was initially greeting at the door, was walking past and kindly took the picture. Otherwise, the restaurant itself is nice, they have a beautiful spiral staircase that's like the staple piece. I didn't go upstairs to see the layout but the restaurant is nice. A knockout!!! I came here for the first time and decided to try some of the options here. My partner and I first started with the pomegranate ribs and that was absolutely delicious. It started the evening very well, then, the drinks came and mine definitely punched me in the face. Of course I had wray and nephew in it so I already knew the power that this packed. My partner had to spritz, which was pretty fine. When the main entrée came, the oxtail was certainly delicious, I've certainly had better, but it was good enough for a restaurant quality type of oxtail, rice and peas tasted great as well along with the sweet planted. My partner originally wanted the lamb shank, but unfortunately, they ran out. So she had to settle for the ribeye, which wasn't bad at all. We ended up becoming full halfway through the meal so we just took it all. I will say, it is a very pricey restaurant, though being that it's in the downtown Brooklyn area so do be prepared to spend. Have been trying to come here for a year so when I saw a reservation, best believe I grabbed it! We arrived and were seated quickly. The restaurant is cute. I came specifically for the curry crab and was really excited to try it after watching a video of the chef making it on Tiktok but when I got there, the menu I viewed online was not the one we were given. So I came here for brunch after the Brooklyn half marathon on a Saturday and I was impressed. The first time, I came for dinner and it was ok but for brunch I had a great time. I ordered the spritz flight which was good but there was one which I liked the best out of the three. We wanted the codfish fritters but they didn't have them. We ordered the cedar salad with jerk chicken and that was good, a great salad. The dressing was light and they put mango in it which gave it a nice added texture and the mango added a nice flavor. I had the peppa shrimp with grits and it was good but it was very rich so I would recommend they have something to cut the richness so I asked for hot sauce. Also my food could have been hotter. The portion was good and flavorful. Overall the meal was great and I enjoyed brunch more than dinner. Also the waiter was amazing, very attentive and friendly. I was hyped to try Mango Bay...each time I wanted to go i could not get a reservation. I was lucky to just randomly check and a friday night reservation was available. The staff was so attentive. From the host to the bartender to the waitstaff. Also. Very knowledgeable about the menu..thats rare nowadays. Unfortunately, my food was just ok.... I ordered the branzino however they were all out. Ugh We tried the ackee and saltfish egg rolls. These were cool however the pepper jack overpowered the flavor of the calaloo and saltfish. I ordered the pepper shrimp as a main. The dish came out room tempature, the dumplings were tight and hard and the sauce was more smoky than spicy. I opted for the salmon instead. The salmon was nicely plated, hot and flavorful. We also tried the lamb shanks with sweet potato mash..again the food temperatures were off. Our lamb was hot but mash room tempature. The sweet potato mash good of had a bit more sweetness. However the lamp was flavorful and tender. We ordered a side of saffron potatoes and sweet plantains...these were the highlights for the nite. I think Mango bay is fine if you don't know authentic Caribbean cuisine. The food is cooked good though. Lacks true flavor (oxtail) I think the French aspirations of a Michelin takes away from what Jamaican food and black culture really is especially with the portions and "exclusivity" wait list lol. In my neighborhood Michelins are easy to walk into no big deal especially if it's 1 star. But I'm still confused when I saw jallof rice on the menu and thats something I wanted to avoid because in Manhattan it's mainly every other culture making Jamaican food but Jamaicans. I don't think it's a good fusion personally. Two different worlds. Brooklyn let me down this time. New York is losing recipes daily because everyone wants to create "something new" and it always sounds good and looks cool on Instagram in theory but it just ends up being replicas of the next thing. I think Tatianna by chef Kwamie set the example and now a lot of our people are following it. Instead of being a stand out like a Miss Lily's or an upscale version of Footprints. Mango Bay in Brooklyn is a personal favorite of mine and never disappoints. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and feels very homey at the same time. It has an upscale vibe, but still feels warm, inviting, and relatable rather than stuffy. The servers were super knowledgeable of the menu and really helped us make our decisions. I'm known to ask someone's favorite and then not order it, but we listened to the recs and they were all spot on. The food was a complete hit across the board. There were four of us, and we ordered the oxtail, pepper shrimp, akee and saltfish egg rolls, jerk chicken Caesar salad, goat puff pastry, and the mussels. Every dish delivered. I did not get to taste the mussels because my friend went completely silent and cleared the bowl so fast that I never stood a chance, which honestly says enough on its own. The standout dish for me was the goat puff pastry. I typically do not enjoy goat dishes, so I was genuinely shocked by how much I loved it. The flavor reminded me of the oxtail and was incredibly rich and satisfying. The jerk chicken Caesar salad was also amazing. The jerk had a nice kick without being overwhelming, and the balance of sauce and dressing was perfect. The biggest surprise for me was the akee and saltfish egg rolls. I have tried akee and saltfish several times before and never liked it, but these completely changed my mind. They were delicious. The hostess was super kind and thoughtful. There was only one seat left at the bar and she actually gave up her chair for us, which really stood out. We originally wanted the lychee mojitos, but they were out of lychee, which was a little disappointing. We ended up keeping it simple with an espresso martini and a vodka soda and both were solid. For appetizers, we ordered the salad and fries. I enjoyed them. My friend felt like the salad had a slightly fishy taste, but it worked for me and was up to my standards. I liked the addition of chopped mango in the salad, which was a different experience that surprisingly worked really well together. Mango Bay is a beautiful restaurant! As soon as you walk in you are greeted by lovely staff. There is upstairs seating along with main floor seating. Music was amazing, I was living for the throwback dance hall and reggae music. Drinks were soooo good. I got the Brooklyn love and my gf got the soursop feels. Food was delicious and flavors were amazing. My favorite was the goat over the puff pastry. I was slightly disappointed as the menu I had seen online had some dishes I set my heart on and they were not available when we arrived (ie not on the menu) and as a fair warning I believe one dish isn't available before 6pm. It seems like perhaps the executive chef changes in the last year. That being said , it is wheelchair accessible via ramp. There are a number of mocktails available, and the Peppa shrimps seemed to be a universally popular choice across the table. Hostesses were all lovely. Loved the ambiance at Mango Bay. The space has an elevated, refined feel, and we were warmly greeted before being brought to our table. They have a spiral staircase too, which looks great but definitely requires watching your step. I was impressed by how easily the servers move up and down it. I went for a brunch date, and the food and drinks were really good. The only downside for me was the price. A side of avocado is $9 for just two thin slices, and our total came out to a little over $150 for two people (including one salad to go). This is our second time dining at Mango Bay, and our experience has been wonderful! The waiters and waitresses we've had both times were amazing - friendly, attentive, and always checking on how our food was, whether we needed anything, and refilling our water without us asking. We sat upstairs this time, and I have to say the room felt prettier and more romantic compared to the first floor. The lower level is also very nice, just a bit noisier since it has the bar and the tables are closer together. We ordered a lot of dishes to try, and we enjoyed pretty much everything! The oxtail, ribs, and scallops are my husband's favorites. We've had the scallops twice already because the sauce is so good! You can literally dip anything in it. The ribs are tender, flavorful, and fall right off the bone! I personally love the Branzino. The flavor is amazing, and the pineapple sauce makes the fish extra refreshing. The bones are already removed, so it's easy to eat, and there's a nice layer of mixed vegetables underneath. The oxtail is delicious too, though a little salty, but if you eat it with the rice it comes with, it balances perfectly. I had the cocktail Mango Bae today, and I really liked it! This weekend we had the pleasure of visiting Mango Bay restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This unique little gem offers an elevated Caribbean menu that highlights authentic Caribbean flavor with an upscale spin. To begin we ordered the Greene Lit cocktail. This beautifully crafted cocktail blends vodka, prosecco, lime and mint and served as a perfect starter for what was to be an amazing brunch! For our main courses we ordered the Pepper Prawns and Grits and the Steak and Eggs. I am a huge shrimp and grits fan and have spent time trying this dish all over the country. I was very curious how Mango Bay would measure up with their unique take that includes a Scotch bonnet sauce as well as a pimento sauce. I can say unequivocally and without hesitation, this is the absolute best shrimp and grits I have ever had in my life!!! The balance of flavor, texture and freshness was only outdone by the masterful preparation of each component of this dish. One might be intimidated by the thought of a Scotch bonnet sauce but this chef has an unparalleled understanding of balance and it is clear that this dish was born from pure artistry and know-how!!! If you are a lover of shrimp and grits, as I am, this one is not to be missed! I would go so far as to say you have not had it right until you've had it here. I am told the steak and eggs were exquisitely prepared and the accompanying spicy aioli highlighted the beautiful, perfectly prepared steak, sunny side up egg and crispy ridged potatoes. The service was warm and friendly and the restaurant's overall atmosphere is transportational to the islands. Mango Bay is a true star of Caribbean flavor in Brooklyn. Try it, try it, try it! Getting reservations here took a bit, we had to wait for over a month to come in but wow was the food worth it. I wish I could give it 5 stars just because the food was amazing but I was not expecting the hiccups we had. Although we had a reservation, our table wasn't ready so we were waiting by the door and as you know, NYC is cold so it was annoying every time someone else came in it got really cold and the place was super crowded and the bar is too small for space so we were cramped just waiting. Once we got to our table we waited over 15mins for the menu because the host forgot to give them to us. They apologized for it (bc we had to ask) and after that the experience was marvelous. We ordered drinks which were yummy. The goat puff pastry was amazing, the jerk Caesar salad delicious and then for our meals we tried the oxtails with rice and peas, sweet plantains and jerk chicken with festival bread. Everything was absolutely delicious and it quickly changed the unpleasantness from earlier. We decided not to order dessert because we were super full and the server still brought us out a mango puff pastry to apologize for the wait. This was such a sweet gesture. I enjoyed my French toast, cheese grits and hot honey fried wings. What I didn't enjoy is being served warm water with no ice and waiting 20 minutes for a piece of lemon. We also waited 30 minutes to get our check. The restaurant had to go boxes but no bags which means you were trying to carry your leftovers in your hands without dropping any food. What I will say is the restaurant is beautiful. I love the decor. The seats are not comfortable as they have backs that sit far back which makes it impossible to sit up straight. read more

So today my partner and I went here for date night. The ambiance was cool it's pretty small however very cute. The service was okay, I just wish the waitress would know more about the food because when she was asked about the rasta pasta and was it spicy she stated that it wasn't spicy at all and that wasn't the case. So we had the seafood rasta pasta and the burger. The rasta pasta says lobster sauce and nothing about that sauce says lobster the sauce is a jerk sauce and it is very spicy especially for someone that doesn't like spicy at all. My friend, who isn't a big restaurant goer wanted to take me out and I thought hey this may be it. We went on a Wednesday evening and it was fairly empty at first but picked up. It was a hot day so we opted for indoors . I hate being hot and eating. We ordered drinks, which I think we're a saving grace. We ordered apps. The pepper shrimp and the ribs. The shrimp was the best thing I ate. The ribs were lacking something. I think the food just looked better than it tasted overall. For entrees we shared the oxtail and the snapper. The oxtail was not good. I have never gone to a restuarant and left oxtails on the plate but it just was not good. It was tough and salty, The waiter came over and we said it to him and he just apologized and said he would tell the chef. The snapper was good. It came in a curry sauce I liked but my friend not so much. The rice that came with the oxtail was a bit mushy. Overall, I dont think I'd gravitate towards coming back. This was a phenomenal experience. My boyfriend, friend visiting from out of town and I went on a Wednesday evening for dinner. The ambiance was impeccable. We started out with the specialty cocktail. For apps we did the fluke ceviche, peppa shrimps, & goat puff pastry. My favorites were the ceviche & shrimps. So flavorful & fresh. Presentation is also amazing! I enjoyed the goat puff pastry as well, I'm just not as keen on puff pastry but that was my boyfriend's favorite app. For our main, we ordered oxtail & ras + pasta. The Ras + Pasta is one of the top pastas I have ever had. It had a hint of creaminess, but not overly rich. The seafood really cuts it in the most perfect way! The oxtail was good as well, I just prefer a leaner cut, but if you aren't as annoying as me, it's a must try! We also got the beans and rice and plantains on the side. Came here yesterday for a belated Birthday dinner and the minute you walk in you're taken back by the cute decor and the ambiance we arrived early and got to sit at the bar while our table was being prepared. We got seated shortly after and since we have looked at the menu before coming we kind of knew what we wanted: they were out of octopus so we didn't get that instead we got mussels and it turned out to be the highlight dish of the night Ras& pasta 7/10- flavors were good a bit salty for me but I did wish the portions were slightly bigger for the price Mussels- 10/10 everyone should definitely try this dish the curry was perfection. It was creamy but had a kick. As someone who can't eat spicy it was tolerable for me and the charred bread was a nice added touch. I do wish they offered more bread though. Oxtail- 8.5/10 enjoyed the flavors in this dish good sharing portion for two people but if you were coming with a larger group and doing family style I would say it's only good for 2 people max. Scallops- 6.5/10 quite dissapointed in this dish. The scallops was good but you can't really mess up scallops unless you tried it looked gorgeous on presentation however the flavors were lacking. Drinks, we each got two drinks and I think the best one was probably the soursop. These drinks were expensive but wasn't quite there for me personally. Again I am a cocktail snob. I sat at the bar because there were no reservations. I enjoyed every bit of my food, well at least my ribs. I tore it up! I also split a pastry like appetizer ( I forgot the name and don't feel like researching it, so forgive me), it was a bit salty so we didn't finish it. The drinks were really good and I love that the bartender put love into it. I love to see a bartender getting into making the drink because of the bartender cares about that drink, it's going to be fire and it was. My friend got the mussels. Originally I visited Mango Bay on Valentine's day and loved my prex-fixe meal so much that I decided to host my birthday party here. Everything about booking this place as an event venue went smoothly and I'm grateful that the owner, David, and the staff were such a pleasure to work with. For food, I am IN LOVE with their Hamachi Crudo and the Lobster Ras & Pasta. Both had complex flavors that were well balanced and didn't overpower the dish. For drinks, I enjoyed the Calyspo Fashioned, the Mango Bae, and the Mango Baby mocktail. So far I've been here twice since it opened a few months ago and I am already looking forward to my next visit. Thank you David and staff for helping to make my birthday event so wonderful from the music to the the service. Yum!!!!! Mango Bay is delicious. Located in Fort Greene, their menu and service was exactly what my friend and I needed. For drinks, most of the table ordered the Mango Bae and I ordered the Gin Fizz. We loved our drinks. For appetizers, we ordered the octopus and lamb puff pastry. The octopus was tasty and accompanying sides were so good. I don't eat meat but my friends said the lamb was good as well. Our entrees were delicious: Bush Fowl, Braised Oxtail, Mango Curry Australian King Prawns!! Plates were cleaned! I love how the decor payed homage to Brooklyn and the African Diaspora. Stopped by Mango Bay in Brooklyn for dinner and had a solid experience overall. The vibe of the restaurant is fun and welcoming, and the service was friendly. We started with the goat puff pastry, which was flaky and well-seasoned--definitely a good appetizer. The jerk chicken salad had a nice kick to it, with fresh greens and a good balance of heat and flavor. For the main, I had the braised oxtail. It was tender and well-cooked, but the flavor profile wasn't exactly what I expected. Not bad, just different from what I'm used to with oxtail. For drinks, we tried the Mango Bae their rum punch option and the lemonade--both were on the sweeter side. If you like sugary drinks, you'll enjoy them, but if you prefer something more balanced, you might want to ask for a lighter touch on the sweetness. read more
