I'm Dominican so I know oxtail pretty well and have made it myself. Thankfully, this place absolutely delivered. The oxtail was perfectly slow-braised, tender, and falling right off the bone -- exactly how it should be. Absolutely amazing. Of course I had the rice and peas, plus some veggies. A few of the veggies were slightly overcooked, but still flavorful and enjoyable. The drinks looked incredible, but I went with the rum punch and loved it. It was a little sweet, but super flavorful, strong, and definitely worth ordering again. For dessert, I had the Hennessy cheesecake, which was rich, decadent, and unbelievably delicious. There were three of us dining, and we all left completely satisfied -- with take-home containers because the portions are VERY generous. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that our server seemed to focus most of her attention on my friend. She is Jamaican, and because I look like a white American woman, I felt a little overlooked at times, even when I had several requests myself. We also had to look for her a couple of times while she was sitting with a group nearby. That said, everyone overall was very nice and welcoming. The moment we walked in, I knew we were in for an amazing culinary experience. It was my birthday weekend, and we were in New York for an extended stay. For my hubby, Brooklyn is home - and we always love exploring the new places the city has to offer when we visit. We had reservations, and were seated within 10 minutes, which was reasonable. The place was packed - everyone was in high spirits, and I was ready to taste some of the best Caribbean cuisine in the region. My hubby's best friend - a Brooklyn resident, joined us. He had been to the restaurant a few times - and had good things to say. We were not disappointed. I had the Brown Stew Red Snapper - *chef's kiss*. Hubby had the iconic Jerk Oxtail over Macaroni & Cheese Pie! The English language cannot convey the beauty of that combination! Tender, tender oxtail, falling off the bone with the creamy, cheesy mac & cheese! He wanted to savor that dish another day, so he got a to-go bag and took it back to the hotel! (I couldn't help but clean my plate - I was obsessed with the fish!) Our friend enjoyed the Hennessy Fried Shrimp (not pictured) - one of his favorite dishes at the restaurant. It looked delicious as well. For drinks, I had the Bob Marley cocktail. A colorful drink - flavorful - and effective! Initial walk in, the greeting was prompt and warm. We were seated quickly and received water after a short wait. I asked for bottled still water, but the staff member didn't know what they offered, so I decided to wait. Our server came over for drink orders and she was very warm and kind. After the initial interaction, I had to constantly look for our server or any staff member whenever I needed something. This is not the experience I expected based on reviews, but then I realized something important. Google and Yelp reviews are very different. Yelp reviewers tend to be more honest and consistent, and I should have listened. Final Thoughts: Traveling all the way from Boston for this experience was a letdown. Between having to chase service and inconsistent food quality, it simply was not worth it. If it were not for how I was raised, the tip would have been 10 percent, and even that would have been forced. This was my second time here and it's more of a 3.5 star review. Stopped in with a girlfriend of mine around noon after a 5k in prospect park on Saturday. The place wasn't busy when we arrived, but it was by the time we left around 2. Place is a decent size, but it can get super crowded. Service this time was much better than my last visit. Our server Diamond was really cool and open to giving menu recommendations. There was a mix of soca and dancehall playing and I appreciate that it was at an appropriate volume where you could hold a conversation. For drinks, I had "The Pash" which was fine (nothing amazing) and my friend had a mango slush with rum. For the appetizer, we shared the ackee and saltfish bammy bites. Those were really good and I remember liking them. For entrees, my friend got the jerk chicken which she (as a Jamaican) said was super spicy, but manageable once you get past the jerk sauce. I had the Belgian waffles and shrimp. The flavor of both were good, but here's where I had the problem. My waffles came out damn near cold. I sent them back. They were apologetic and I was promised fresh waffles. When they came out the second time, they STILL weren't hot but I dealt with it. Came here with some coworker friends for a weekend lunch at the recommendation of one of my coworkers. I was very excited to try more Caribbean food. Located across the street from the Barclay Center, it was very convenient to get to. The restaurant was much larger than I expected too but wasn't too crowded for a Saturday lunch so you can definitely just walk in. I was very excited about the sampler bowl. We were told it was a good portion for a group of three and adding a side would make it the perfect meal. The sampler came with curry goat, chicken, oxtail, plantains, and rice and veggies. We came here on a Sunday night to celebrate my sisters graduation from medical school! We have a doctor in the house ya'll! The restaurant was packed and the bouncer at the door only let us in after we stated that we had a reservation. They ended up being able to seat 10 people together and the other 6 (my table) sat at a different table. Be ready to open your wallet really wide when you come here because it is not cheap! I think they take advantage of the Barclays center being right across the street but the food is delicious. If you do shareable plates and split the check amongst one another you can save a lot of money though. The table of 10 complained that their service had been slow; however, my table of 6 had a great time with great service because our waiter, Bianca, was on it all night long! We started with the cheeseburger sliders which were tasty and cute. We probably shouldn't have ordered them considering how much food we took home after but we'll know for next time. You really don't need an appetizer because the portions are so big. The jerk oxtail over the Mac n cheese pie was fire. The flavor and seasoning of the food was perfect and left nothing to be desired. The oxtail was good and a little spicy while the Mac n cheese was creamy. I've been to this location once and the one in Atlantic City and those times were amazing. But this last trip was disappointing and had I not been here before I would've gave a 3 star. However the staff are very friendly and professional, they check in on you often. The restaurant also still looks really nice and definitely really clean. This time around I got bourbon ribs and the half baked potato. The ribs weren't anything to wow about and my potato had no flavor and felt like the cheese was just burnt on top of it. The portion size was great for the cost but after a while of eating the ribs, it didn't taste good anymore and I disregarded the potato after a few bites. I'm assuming it would've been better if I got it on a weekend. Pretty cool West Indian Restaurant & bar , I had the Mac and Cheese and Oxtail and the Barclays drink (its blueberries and Hennessy cognac , its very delicious ) I wanted to try the bob Marley drink but our waiter said it very slushy so stick with the Barclays drink instead , it was delicious and fingerpicking my oxtail and mac and cheese , My friends had a great time so did i . the drinks was tasty & delicious , its located right near Barclays center & not far from Brooklyn paramount on Flatbush Avenue & Atlantic avenue areas (those concert halls similar to Kings Theatre ) ,Any how this location right literally across from Atlantic Terminal mall :Marshalls, Target , Burlington, Nike store , Stop & shop supermarket , Guitar center , Victoria secret, Uniqlo , and oh yeah and old navy store , and etc. stores and Apple store on Flatbush Avenue and walking distance from Fulton street mall (Fort Greene /Downtown Brooklyn area . We came without a reservation and were told the wait would be about 20-30 minutes. Since the waiting area was full, one of the host (man)suggested we head to the bar. My cousin asked if we could grab one of the many empty tables near the bar and someone told her yes, but as we were about sit down a female host came through with another party and very rudely told us we couldn't sit there. Her tone and facial expression were unprofessional and off-putting. We went back to the bar, there was only one stool for the three of us. Security came over and politely explained that standing wasn't allowed--he was professional and kind about it, but at that point I honestly considered leaving. Luckily, when we returned to the podium area a large group had just left, so I was finally able to sit (important since I have back issues). Once seated, it took a while for our server to get to us, but she was apologetic and explained she was handling a large birthday table. From then on, things turned around. The atmosphere was nice, the music was great, and the food really stood out. We ordered cod fritters, honey curry wings, and jerk wings to start. I didn't try the fritters, but a couple were left. The jerk wings were excellent--spicy and full of flavor. For entrees, I had the reggae pasta with oxtail (so good, though I wish the oxtail pieces were bigger). My husband had the steamed redfish and loved it. My cousin ordered the ribeye, which was tender, seasoned perfectly, and cut like butter. For dessert, they had the red velvet cake and chocolate lava cake, which disappeared before I could even snap a photo. Overall, the night started rocky with the seating confusion and a slow start to service, but the food and atmosphere won us over. If I'm ever in New York, I'd return--but definitely with a reservation next time. read more
