I did a night kayak and took Kayaking Basics 1 and 2 from Manhattan Kayak. The night kayak was slow-paced for beginners. It looks cool with all of the under-lit kayaks. In Kayak Basics 1 and 2 I learned a lot I didn't know. They run small classes so that you get individual feedback when you're doing something correctly or incorrectly. Kayak 1 covered basic strokes. Kayak 2 added more techniques like tilting the kayak. In Kayak 2 they had us do a "wet exit" where you exit the kayak while inverted and get back in. I've always feared inverting and avoided it--and will continue to attempt to avoid it, but doing so in a controlled environment provided valuable knowledge to handle that situation if it ever occurred unexpectedly. read more

We went to Intrepid and saw the kayaking. We went over to ask more details. It was booked for the day but the man explained to us very patiently. They open summer to Halloween. Thur to Sunday from 1 pm to 6 pm. We have children and none of us has experience in kayak or paddling board. He said we could do the double kayak ( children require adult accompany unless they are 11/12 years old). No experience needed. We will be instructed briefly at the beginning and there will be staff in kayaks in the water too. We stay at the inlet next to intrepid. $12 per person for 45 min. Single or double kayak. This was my first SUP yoga class and it was so much fun and a legit challenging workout (more than expected) even if you're an experienced yogi. The class has 8 people - everyone paddles out to a cord set up in the middle of the water area (little bay by the Intrepid so no waves but yes it looks pretty deep). You tether your board to a spot on the cord, tether your life jacket / paddle to your board. Instructor then takes you through a bunch of poses some modified slightly for board stability. I found it to be awesome cross training for my on land yoga as the whole class is a giant exercise in grounding yourself much more so than normal through all the poses in the flow, including constant micro adjustments as your board sways with the current. Out of fear of dunking in the Hudson (ick) I skipped a few of the more challenging poses like headstand but you certainly get opportunities to try if you're brave enough. Fun bucket list activity but also just a solid complement to your on land yoga as the dynamics of your relationship to the ground totally changes and you have to be very mindful of your center of gravity. Highly recommend for yogis! (P.S. they require masks on land and sanitize shared equipment so it felt pretty safe.) read more

Hello, one and all. Here is my take. This place has made great efforts taking that first step forward they have relaunch with everyone's health in mind. Spraying down the equipment that gets reused by customers and personnel was always part of the process now they have gone further by providing social distancing markers for their regulars to follow. The hand sanitizers are place at entrances and exits. It's required for everyone to wear a facemask when walking in and out of the facility and here is the best part once you are out on the water remove the mask the fresh breeze coming in from the waterfront is amazing. They regulate how many ppl are allowed in the Inclosed(designated) area. No overcrowding so with all that open space mask off its a sigh of relief to be able to get in a low impact work out on the water. Tips from me to you.. Wear sunscreen, bring a lock, most importantly reserve online because it's practically the safest gym-based workout in town. Actually, it's so much fun it can't be considered a workout. Reservation is needed to get out on the water. Lastly, the coaches crush it when it comes down to tips and guides to not fall in and so far I have done 10 laps in 3 visits and have yet to fall in so I will be back. SUP(stand up paddling) is now a part of my weekly workouts. I am recovering from a motor injury so this makes me workout those balancing issues and I love the challenge. On my way over today after work, I am hyped one of the many things I look forward too during these trying times. The view is absolutely gorgeous as we were sailing North. Our kayaks were very stable and you can either choose to go on a single or double. I took my phone with me and put it in my life vest (thank goodness it had a thick padding or else my phone would have never survived). The waves are decently strong for a 4pm sail in late summer. You get a clear view of the Freedom Tower and if you just look hard enough, you get a glimpse of the statue of liberty and the Verrazano Bridge. I highly recommend for couples, friends, and even just a gift for yourself. Many people came solo and everyone was really nice so you can really just mingo. Got this as a groupon and it came with a free drink at the Frying Pan. It was great! Just as a side note: the hudson river is pretty nasty but it was worth it! My wife and kids and I had an amazing time at the Pier 84 boathouse yesterday. This was my third day outside since mid-March! We both quit our gyms and the kids' summer camps were cancelled. You can sign up and do the waivers online so there's no paper/pen, just a person behind plexiglass to check-in. Everything is outdoors. They usher people in one at time so everyone has a lot of space to socially distance. You pick up extra masks and lifejackets, use the hand sanitizer, and kayak in the cove by the Intrepid. It is so peaceful. The breeze and open sky -- pure joy! My son saw some fish flipping around. The water is even more spectacular than we remembered. And the staff sanitized our gear afterwards, so that was reassuring. The experience gave us confidence that NYC will come back strong. Thank you and see you again soon! read more

I have been here twice so far, once for kayaking last week and SUP (stand up paddle boarding) this week- and both classes deserve 5 star reviews. Kayak: It was an absolutely beautiful day to paddle up and down the Hudson and so we did...Brandon and Juan were the instructors and they were awesome. I have been kayaking many times from the ocean to rivers to lakes, and the Hudson is definitely a challenge, but doable at any experience level. The group ranged from newbies to experienced and we all had a blast! Some tips: You will definitely get wet from the waste down so wear a bathing suit. Bring a change of clothes and a small towel along with a big ziploc bag to put your wet clothes in after you are done. I kept my IPhone in a ziploc and was able to take some pictures through the bag and store it in my life vest while paddling. I loved the kayaking so much I came back the next week to try SUP... SUP: Our instructor was Eric (the owner) who is intense, but extremely knowledgeable and super helpful. He went in depth before class to explain the do's and don'ts and I would definitely pay attention if I were you! We had a lot of time to wander in the water and try out the different positions, and plenty of opportunities to fall in the water :) Eric came around and I would also recommend watching him as he effortlessly paddles by (I do not know how he does it, but it is very impressive!). It is a tricky sport and you will definitely fall in the water (don't worry, you will survive the Hudson). Same tip as before- wear a suit and bring ziplocs. They have a hose so you can rinse off after your session... Most importantly have fun, laugh and enjoy the view! read more

The location next to the intrepid is a great spot. The water is very quiet next to that big colossal. Then they take you out of the safety zone to the Hudson. After years of hard work, the water is quite clean. Occasional fumes follow the boats like the circle line that come into dock at the pier south of there. The kayakers seem to enjoy the wave wakes that these boats make. Scared of water? They are super gentle about it. Luckily the waters next to the intrepid are gentle too. Instructors Doug, Jay and Brandon that I have experience with were great. I'm glad they get paid to do something they love. I always tip at least 20% Because you always get good lessons when your teacher loves the subject and truly wants you to love it too. I'm ready for more. I'm going to join them for more tours. They go 15 miles out to the Statue of Liberty if you are ready! read more

One of the many hidden treasures of New York City. It is located on the west side immediately next to the intrepid. My boyfriend and I came to Manhattan Kayak Company on Friday afternoon without reservations and were able to rent Stand Up Paddle boards with no problem at all! They have free lockers to store all of your valuables. The facility had a very retro vibe on the interior. Supposedly the tent within the storage unit is actually the owner's personal office space! The workers were all very friendly and made us comfortable (I was a little nervous as I have never been on a SUP before). For just $15/pp we got to rent the SUP for about 30-45 minutes. It was very quiet the entire time we were there, just 3 other people were renting at the same time as us (no complaints there!!) We look forward to returning later this summer for some lessons, maybe even a yoga class.. If you're ambitious enough they have a 4 hour tour in New Jersey where they incorporate SUP within a Japanese village (pretty sure it includes sushi of some kind, and of course a killer workout!) Manhattan Kayak moved up north to 44th street. The embayment is spacious -- I mean HUGE! It's perfect for newbies, because it's nice and calm and it's good for more advanced SUPers who need to build up endurance by doing laps. Plus the view of the intrepid is fierce! I took the SUP intro classes last year at the old location so now I'm there for SUP rentals ($15 for 30 mins) and skill builds, working up to one of the excursions. Shannon was a great instructor for the skill build and really helped improve my technique in just one hour. If you want to have a good workout on the board, she'll make sure you get one! I've spent quite a bit of the summer here and I recommend Manhattan Kayak to anyone who wants to learn any paddle sport. I can't say enough good things about this place. Eric, Shannon, and Seth are all about making sure you know what you're doing in the bay so that you can handle the tricks the river throws out on the tours. This is a great place to learn. I have kayaked in various spots around the world but never in or around NYC so I came to Manhattan Kayak with a trip organized by my school's recreation office. There was 10 of us and we did the Fun in the Sun tour which lasted about 3 hours. The guides told us we were the first tour group of the 2011 season since the temperatures have only started warming up recently. The air temperature was in the high 60's and the water temperature was in the low 50's; the day started out overcast but the sun peeked out every now and then, just enough to keep us warm. Manhattan Kayak provided us with wetsuits, wind jackets, and (of course) life jackets. The two guides were Eric and Gus (I think....) who were very pleasant and friendly. Since we were a mixed group of beginners and experienced kayakers, we were all given a 15-minute paddling lesson on the dock before we took off. For that same reason, we were all given sit-on-top kayaks. At the end of the tour, one of the guides showed us all the different kayaks they had available for different levels and tours. The boathouse has two bathrooms and two showers. The staff was very helpful and amicable. I highly recommend Manhattan Kayak if you're looking for activities around NYC during the spring and summer. read more

I LOVE MKC!!! I was first introduced to kayaking on vacation in Puerto Rico and enjoyed it so much that I HAD to do it again before the summer ended, in NYC. This is where MKC comes in =) I did a thorough Google search for kayaking companies and this place had strong reviews (not to mention it's right next to the Frying Pan if you want to grab a drink afterwards). It just so happened that they were having an end of summer promotion where most classes were discounted so I booked the "Fun in the Sun" tour with my friend. I arrived 5 mins late due to weekend traffic and didn't show up on their registration list but they accommodated me right away and off I went! Our guides Toby and Alejandro were very informative, both during the 15 mins technical How-To demonstrations and the 1 hour tour on the Hudson, guiding you how to turn, go against the current without flipping over...my guides were awesome because they always kept an eye on everyone to make sure we were all together, and assisted the newbies in the back like me who had a hard time with the turbulent waters. FYI- they have small cubby lockers so pack light (no duffles), bring a lock, water bottle, dry clothes, a towel, flip flops, wear waterprrof makeup ladies!, sunglasses and sunscreen and a snack for afterwards. I just did a Skyline Kayak Tour this past weekend with my friend and we had a great experience! I had a LivingSocial deal that I had purchased months ago but realized a few weeks ago that it was expiring at the end of September so I hurriedly tried to book a class originally with my boyfriend (who ended up not being able to make it due to work) for our 2 year anniversary. I stupidly assumed you just show up with the voucher and get to go out on a kayak but after browsing their website online, came to the realization that reservations were needed beacuse they have classes and everything was booked for September. Long story short, I called up the company and one of the girls informed me that there were openings for end of September (all the booked classes had one spot on the waitlist and I needed a 2 spot waitlist for my bf and I) but that I should book it ASAP because they fill up fast. I could not find that particular class online and called her back all panicky lol. She stayed on the phone patiently with me (I felt really bad and told her I could call her back but she insisted on staying on the phone to help me) as we searched for the class and came to realize for some odd reason, that ONE class wouldn't display on my computer. She then asked me if I wanted to book 2 spots in that class and would charge me $2/pp for fee (forgot what exactly it was for). I gave her my info over the phone and our spots were reserved. Whew! THANK YOU, SANDY! The week of, my bf was called in for work so I asked my friend if she wanted to come with me since she lived in the area. I also called the company to make sure there wouldn't be issues with a last minute friend replacing my bf. The girl over the phone was very pleasant and assured me there would be no issues. We both showed up, signed the waivers, gave her the LivingSocial codes and that's it! Now onto the actual kayaking experience! I would recommend you wear flip flops or bring flip flops unless you're okay with going barefoot into the kayak. I had sneakers and brought flip flops because they tell you there that you get wet from the waist down (which was very true). You get wet from water dripping off the paddles, not from water splashing into your kayak (for me at least). They have changing rooms and lockers there so just bring your own lock. Oh, and bring a towel if you want to dry off! I didn't bring one and just stood in the changing room air-drying afterwards with my hand as a fan lmao. What did I wear while kayaking? Tank top, velour zip up hoodie, and thin leggings (I probably should've worn shorts since my leggings were soaked) and I was fine (probably because I spent so much energy paddling). I am one of those people that cannot stand the cold and we did the 9:30AM class. It was pretty windy and waters semi-choppy but nothing the class couldn't handle. The instructor first gave us brief instructions on how to hold the paddle and how to maneuver your kayak which I found very helpful. I've kayaked before (around 5x?) but didn't know there were certain ways to hold the paddle, etc. It seemed like a majority of my class were beginners (never kayaked before) and everyone did great so no worries if you've never kayaked before! My friend also never kayaked before and she had fun! They also teach you how to get in and out of the paddle. Paddling in the kayaks became very tiring for me because we were going against the wind and the current (plus I'm a weaksauce) but it was really relaxing in a way. I loved the view and just being on the water. The current/wind was so strong that once we reached our "destination", it seemed like it took 5 minutes for us to drift back to our starting point haha. All that work for nothing! But it was a great workout and I NEVER workout. I did feel pretty chilly after the whole kayaking because my leggings were soaked and it was super windy out so maybe bring some dry warm clothing for after. In conclusion, if you're a beginner, don't be afraid and just do it (Skyline Kayak Tour)! Remember to book your spots online IN ADVANCE. Spots fill up quick! The staff is very friendly and informative and you get a great workout! I would definitely go back to do it again with my boyfriend next time :D Thank you guys for the experience! Things to Bring: 1. My friends and I had a daily candy deal for a kayaking basics class. I think it was a little misleading because we did not realize it would be a 3 and a half hour land instruction with 30 minutes of water time. Our instructor was very knowledgeable, but very long winded. She went into a lot of detail about Kayaking that was not necessary at a beginning stage (i.e. what kayaks are used for long distance vs. white water kayaking). Once on the water I thought we would have time to relax and enjoy kayaking, but that wasn't the case. Our instructor kept calling us back by the dock for more instruction while on water. I learned a lot about kayaking, but I would have much rather had an abbreviated lesson and more time on the water on my own. read more

It's impossible to write an unbiased review about Eric Stiller's Manhattan Kayak Company. This is family! I took my first ride on one of their kayaks back in 2005, when they were still down at Chelsea Piers. I got hooked. So I bought my own and stored it with them. That was until the stand up paddle boards came along. The first time I saw one, I immediately sold my kayak and bought two inflatable SUPs to play with instead and I have never looked back. But this is not about my love for SUPs. I'm writing this review because I love the community and the access to the water that Manhattan Kayak Company has given us Manhattanites. Life and friendship is all about what you send out into the world. Everyone that works there are the best quality people you can hope to find. So not only do you get a GREAT workout, an unforgettable sunset on the Hudson river while you see the daylight reside and Manhattan's lights take over.... I've wanted to try stand up paddleboarding (SUP) for years & my wide got a groupon here: $29 for a "Fun SUP" class & a drink at the neighboring Frying Pan restaurant/bar. The class had to be scheduled in advance online & cost $1 with a credit card after the groupon to reserve the space. The bad thing was the classes were online M-F between 9-5 (but that's what you get with a groupon). Let's just get to the good & bad: - you can leave your bag in their office but be advised, there are no lockers and no locks. Not secure. - bathrooms are available to change. Gross. And one didn't have a handle or lock. If you can arrive in swim wear, all the better. - front office staff was rude. Or who i thought wad the front office staff - the office is shared. Let me clarify: the people MKC share the office with were rude. The person for MKC was nice. - my instructor was awesome. Good basics, not too overbearing, and let me play around. Gave great tips and had a great sense of humor. In all, the place rocked and it was an awesome experience. I highly recommend it. The classes are affordable, and you can get deals. They do instructions and rentals, as well as tours, which sound amazing (and still too difficult - like a 14-mile SUP tour to the Statue of Liberty & back). Definitely check this place out. Eric, owner slash guide takes great pleasure in torturing, I mean escorting adventure folk around the moat of gothem for a fee. Eric is really cool. I have a mad burn in my arm pit region due to the misadventures of proper dressing. The fee: 60/1.5 hours. Yes, I agree it is steep but its fun, adventurous and you will live longer if you dont get sucked in by the current and the madness to pinky ring dive. The location: pier 66. The clothing: nude is the new black ;- The sunset tour was pretty neat. I can't wait for the twilight tour and then eventually the full day tour. There is a sushi tour too which seems glam. ps - I hope you like hudson water splashing in your face (IT IS CLEAN DAMMIT IT IS CLEAN). Seriously. Do it. EDIT: I was offered a free return trip from the owner Eric S for their beginner sunset after dark tour and it was night and day from my previous experience. - The tour guides were electric - The owner Eric S. took my friend and I on a tour around MKC's facilities - The tour was super fun and relaxing, everything was definitely going according to plan this time around - My friend didn't want to get her sunglasses wet, so an employee at MKC let her borrow a pair and eventually gave them to her for free! - I was even offered a 50% discount my next time around at MKC! Would like to make an update from my previous experience: Got invited back by the owner himself ; Mr. Eris S. He offered my friend and I a free Sunset after Dark tour. It was a great experience! From the moment we walked in it was all big smiles and warm hellos. Eric even gave my friend and I a private tour of the place, teaching us all about the history of kayaking and of MKC itself (it's always nice to learn something new!) As for the actual kayaking experience, it was not only a lot of fun but also a really beautiful experience. We had two tour guides, they gave the whole group a thorough run down on how to best take on kayaking, paddling techniques etc. The magic really happened when we finally got in the water, we got to watch the sun set behind the beautiful Manhattan skyline; the tour guides even had us stop to take photos! Overall, had a really great experience and would strongly recommend this tour for any beginner kayak-er looking to enjoy the beauty that is Manhattan! read more

I came here last summer to try it out with a bunch of friends. We had a great time. They trained us with the basics of how to "stand up paddleboard" Then we had plenty of time to try it on your own. The instructors were very good with us. It was so much fun. Ok, yes, you are going to fall into the Hudson River, so if that disgusts you, then stop reading reviews b/c you wouldnt enjoy doing it. But if you can care less, and you want to try something new. DO IT!! They also gave us a voucher for a free drink at the frying pan restaurant close by on the water, which was also a great way to end the day. read more

I will often Kayak a couple times a years, but I've never done it though Manhattan Kayak, nor on the Hudson. I found a deal on Zozi.com for a half off on an After Dark class (which I can't find on their site now, maybe because it's not the season for it right now so they took it off) and I when I started asking around who wanted to do it with me got a three response: 1. "Kayaking on the Hudson... I don't think so." 2. "Kayaking at night...I don't think so." 3. "Kayaking on the Hudson at night...ARE YOU CRAZY!" Well I finally able to find one crazy friend (I don't think we were that crazy! I've definitely done sillier things in my life!) to take the class with me. We picked a day in early September so it was still very warm, even at night. Our class was a bit bigger than I expect, about 15 of us plus the instructors. The instructors were super friendly and nice to talk to. By the way, we all got lights for our kayaks and the instructors had ones for their heads, even though we didn't really need it because the city was so bright and beautiful that there was still so much light! I didn't think about it when we booked the class, but we booked it the weekend of September 11 so the lights were on for that and it was really quite beautiful. The whole city sky line was, I really wish I had a waterproof camera, like some of the people did. The place was on 23rd street and we kayaked up to about 40th, our instructor said it depends how strong the group is but that it was an introduction class so that was about average (and to think we thought we were going to kayak up to the GW! They told us that everyone thinks that they are going that far but that people forget that you're going against the current and you're 150 blocks away from the bridge, just imagine what that is walking!). I definitely recommend doing this tour! It's a good place for intros and they have harder classes as well. I'll probably go back this summer and take a few more classes! read more
