I had an unpleasant experience at Manila Grocery Store recently. My EBT card was declined, and when I mentioned I thought I had enough balance, the owner's daughter rudely said, "You should always check your balance before you shop." I explained I had checked it a few days ago but couldn't remember the exact amount due to age. Her response: "My mother is 75 and doesn't have that problem. It's not that you can't remember--you don't want to." This was incredibly disrespectful and uncalled for. Sadly, this isn't the first time she's been rude to me--she once gave me attitude for asking for a box and insisted on charging 10 cents. I ask her why. She responded recycling fee. Hmmm. Ambiance: small Asian store with Vietnamese owners. Dont confuse the name Manila Market for a Filipino store. The original Filipino owners have sold it a loooong time ago. Service Quality: VERY POOR! You don't feel welcomed. The old lady is very rude. Her daughter also hates it when you ask her where an item is located. I come here a lot because this is the closest Asian market to home. The people who work here really need to not own a business if they don't know how to treat customers. If they want to say something about the customers out loud enough to where they can hear them then that's saying something. It was a modest space with few employees, but they did know where their products were and what we needed. Business as usual here. I walked in and ask if they have Ponzu, she immediately fire back and said no and that I should go to a Japanese store for that. I ignored her and look around the store. I needed toasted sesame seed oil and sure enough, Ponzu was right there. I told her that it was right here for her info. Rudest staff ever! I should preface this review by mentioning that I am 2nd generation Asian-American. Popped in while waiting for the always-tasty food from the In Dat Cutz food truck across the road. I was looking around the store, and simultaneously texting my wife to ask her if she needed anything. I overheard a younger cashier complaining to an older worker, that they could easily spot customers who come in but don't buy anything. I chose to ignore this comment, obviously fired in my direction. However the cashier then asked if I needed any help finding something. I let her know politely that I was just browsing, and was waiting on my wife to let me know what she needed in particular. The cashier then berated me that I should have prepared a list prior to coming into the store. I promptly left the store, and will never return. I have to say that this is the rudest store experience I have ever encountered. You will get much better service from the nice, friendly folks at G-Mart. Fully stocked with multiple choices of all the fundamental ingredients (noodles, spices, sauces, canned goods, non-perishables) for most asian cuisines. Produce section is small and most of the time fresh but has the essentials (bok choi, gai lan, ginger, lemon grass, thai basil, bitter melon, eggplant). The freezer section has a good selection as well (fish, meats, lumpia, shellfish). Prices are average to above average for an asian market. Customer service is amazing! For all questions about anything in the store, ask the boss lady at the register. She's very knowledgeable about everything in the store and can guide you to fulfill your Asian culinary goals! Ask many questions, she has all the patience & time in the world! There are other asian stores in the vicinity but nothing compares to her top notch customer service. first off, me and my family have been going to this market since i was little. that being said, back in the day there werent many asian markets to choose from. if youre thai, there are some items that manila market tends to carry that other larger asian markets dont. (the less popular items amongst other foreigners) and if you cant find it there, the viet/thai market down the road will most likely have it. as to the previous remarks about customer service, i'd have to say that i agree. it seems to be a family owned business, and i usually try to avoid too much interaction with the staff/cashier. they (or she) never seems to be in a good mood and i get the feeling that there is a major lack in drive to work or to run the market successfully. as for the unfair treatment based on ethnicity or race, i've witnessed it as well a few times and feel the distinction quite clearly - which is unpleasant and inexcusable being asian, we have never been asked to pay cash and she even gave us a free bottle of fish sauce when we spent over 30 dollars all in all, there are alot of better options nowadays to pick up asian groceries - manila has been bumped down to one of my last choices for asian grocery shopping. i only really go now when i need certain particular items that other places dont carry. read more

Sunday evening and wasn't aude what to expect as walking in, the first thing I noticed was bakery good to the side and the set up. Small store with items in boxes and things barely marked with aisle signs and what is placed where. Even with this unorganized look, the place is small enough where things are not too hard to find as you just have to do a little walk around. The prices seem very reasonable as my mom and I needed banh xeo flour mix and bean sprouts, the total for these two items was about $2.50! A lot cheaper than some of the asian markets near Beaverton and Tigard. The bean sprouts appeared very clean and packed well and the flour mix was easy to find amongst the aisles. I also saw quite the variety of ramen and noodles from various countries that I haven't been able to spot (or maybe I just didn't look hard enough at the other Asian marts). The place could be kept a little tidier and nicer but all in all, you get what you need and are on your way. The parking spots are ample but the only downside is that it is all one way road access so it can be a hassle. read more

I went in on a Saturday afternoon. Prime shopping time right? It was almost deserted and after a few minutes I could see why. They are the most unpleasant family owned business I have had the displeasure of visiting. The mother and daughter man the checkout lanes and the daughter in particular is rude and nasty. We were walking around looking at all the products and she said to her mom, loudly enough for us to hear " Look at these people walking around with their hands in their pockets. They're not going to buy anything." She gives off the air of someone who was forced to work in the family business and takes out her resentment on paying and potential customers. Offended we started to leave and she practically shouted " See, they're not buying!" When we confronted her, we said we were thinking of buying, but were leaving because of her attitude, she blustered something about not talking about us, but then just resorting to waving us off and yelling the equivalent of "Nah, nah, nah, I can't hear you." The Beaverton area has a plethora of Asian markets, better stocked, better situated and with better customer service. In fact even if those other stores did business with utter indifference, that would still be better than the deliberate and aggressive rudeness with which they treat actual customers. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the moment I walked in, I knew this is the type of store I was looking for. Boxes everywhere and all the weird items you don't normally see. This place is legit, it reminds me of the small market from my hometown. I'm going to stop in when I have more time so I can really check out every aisle and see what all else they carry. I was also surprised to see they carried items I used to find at the Dutch store that closed down. This made me very happy. I was at the store today looking for something specific, when I asked the lady owner, she sternly told me aisle #6, when I can't find what I was looking for, I came back and asked for help and that lady walked out of the cashiers both repeating "aisle#6, aisle #6, aisle #6" over and over and when she was below the number 6 sign, she looked at me and said "this is number 6!" as if I can't read numbers, and "there's what you're looking for" to the point that she was screaming at me. Instead of walking out and going to the much bigger Asian stores, I swallowed my pride and paid for what was on my basket but I will never set foot on this store again.
