I actually had a 1 star experience, walking out thinking, "This store is failing, is going to die, and I know why," but I am giving 3 stars because I want little brick and mortar music stores to survive, especially in places where they are automatically going to have a hard time doing so. I walked in with cash in my pocket, hoping to be surprised and be forced to buy a guitar I didn't expect to run into, as I do whenever I'm in a new or unfamiliar place against my will, as on this day. As I walked in the door, which I was glad to find open during business hours (often these days, doors aren't, especially with guitar and music stores), and was one of 3 customers in the store, the other two already inside, far from the solitary visible employee, who never looked up from the computer or spoke to me until I asked him two guitars on the third row of wall guitars up, that I didn't know by sight, to ask what they were. Instead of answering, he asked me if I was going to buy anything. How do I know if I'm going to buy anything, when I'm asking you what I'm looking at, when you ask me that? I'm going to say this was a "socially awkward person" issue, but that's not going to make me ever come back to this store. Someone at this store does not understand that once you alienate a customer who is apt to return if they feel good about you, you're never going to see that person again. But I hope you all survive. You are going to have to change the way you view and treat people walking in off the street to do that, otherwise why are you paying overhead to have a brick and mortar store just to make people feel unwelcome and suspect, when they walk in. I thought, walking out, this place is doomed, and maybe that's for the best, because the model of personal conduct shouldn't survive. I felt disliked, and unwelcome for no reason, other than that I must be stupid for walking through the door. It seems impossible this is not a common experience. "Are you going to buy something?" What kind of person responds with that when a customer asks what a retail item is (because they are trying to find out whether it's something they would want to buy). read more

Great local music store, including equipment rentals! We needed speakers, mixer, and a microphone for our wedding ceremony and reception. Reed was awesome. He showed me the options and was great about giving me a full run through of how to operate things, as it is a bit technical (and you def don't want to screw up your own wedding! :). This is my go-to music store, whether it's buying something for myself or my son. Sure, it's a little disorganized, but I always just ask for help and they usually grab what I'm looking for and bring it to the counter so I don't actually have to do any real shopping. They always seem to have a great selection of brand new instruments, I have bought a couple of different instruments from them over the years and have never been unsatisfied. I really like that they have a layaway option. It's a great way to encourage people to buy from them who might not have the money upfront for the instrument/gear they want. In short here are the pro's and cons. Pros: Great selection, Great Customer service, and layaway option for large purchases. Locally owned business. Cons: Store is disorganized. Started hanging out here as a kid along with many other music stores due to my fondness for music...As a young D.J. in the early 80's there wasn't much for a mobile D.J. other than ya typical home stero system....after going to a few concerts and studying the sound arrangements, sound engineer & speaker set up... (I use to get to the concerts early during sound check and set up). I took these findings to Sarah at Manor Music and we came up with a figuration so I could expand my D.J. set up to a concert set up...She was a little skeptical that I would blow something up...lol...I didn't and the rest is history...Before D.J. combo sets that we see today Sarah and I made it easy for D.J.'s to advance to a concert set up...I sent all my D.J. friends to Manor Music...I have nothing but luv for Sarah and Manor Music ya Diggg!!! read more

Manor Music is not perfect as it certainly needs some reorganization. Like the hole in the wall restaurants next to it you can view Manor Music is your local mish mash of musical odds and ends which also provides music lessons in isolation booths. The gentleman who helped us on a Saturday was friendly and knowledgeable and it's a shame this place is getting bad reviews due to another employee or owner. read more

I had a great first experience renting from here, the staff is so friendly and welcoming! I rented speakers and a microphone for an event for the weekend and at my pickup time they had no problem helping me switch my order when the larger speakers couldn't fit in my car. They were flexible in my return when I couldn't get it back on Monday its so nice renting from a small shop rather than the bigger businesses I've rented from before that are strict with late fees or changes. I had great help from Ian who was so kind in teaching me how to work the equipment and getting my return settled. Good customer service like that will definitely keep me as a customer for all my future events. read more

I used to come in here all the time for the friendly service, but tonight the owner just lost herself a steady customer. I've been playing the blues harmonica for about 9 years without the benefit of lessons. I'm self-taught and don't know much music theory. What I do know is how to play things by ear. I was trying to verify that I was buying the right key harmonica (blues harps are stamped with a key that corresponds, but is not the same as, the key the band is playing in.) I'm trying to verify it with this really nice guy who gives harmonica lessons at the store; I've already picked out two harps. I just need to make sure they are the right ones for the song I'm going to sit in on soon. I have talked to this guy before and he's always been really cool at reminding me what key to buy because--god help me--I am too busy to really remember the rule. As I'm verifying my purchase the owner goes to the guy: "You shouldn't be spending a half hour on teaching him this." Then to me, "We give music lessons. We can't take this much time on explaining it to you." I explain to her that I'm not trying to get a music lesson; instead, I am trying to verify that the harmonicas I am spending 37 bucks apiece for need to be in the right key to sync up with the band. She says that it's taking too long and that I should take lessons. I explain again that 1) I can play harmonica and am not trying to con anyone into free lessons 2) I am willing and eager to buy two harmonicas at her store and 3) I am trying to support a local business rather than just buying everything online, though it is cheaper Anyhow, I wound up buying one harmonica, but that exchange cost her a loyal, long-term customer. I've actually held off going to other places when Manor Music was closed on Sundays because I wanted to support a local Pacifica business. Not any more. I urge everyone to go to some other music store where customer service is a priority and pedantic rants aren't part of what you have to go through to give them your hard-earned cash. Better yet, buy some harps online--they'll be cheaper and you won't have to deal with the asshole owner. I think it's worth emphasizing that the two guys who worked there were really cool and clearly knew she was being a bitch. My daughter is a beginner guitar player, so we have made several visits to Manor Music in the past couple of years. She recently broke a guitar string, so I brought the instrument to Manor to get it entirely re-strung. I am a newbie to this stuff, so I thought it would be wise to pay an expert to do the job. The woman behind the counter told me it was actually very easy, and she kindly showed me how to replace the string. It took a bit of time, and I'm sure she had lots of other things to do. Tl;dr If you need something repaired do not come here. Don't expect speedy service in anyway. Don't expect reliable service either. I left my guitar for repair in the shop in the middle of July. I was told the guitar would have to be moved from the Manor location to the sister location in the city and that this may take a week or two at most. I was also told that someone would call me once it has been moved or if anyone was going to be doing any work on it. After returning to the store multiple times after the initial request for repairs, the guitar was not moved and absolutely nothing was done to it. I ended up picking it up and taking it home. It took them 3 and a half weeks to do absolutely nothing to the guitar. I asked the employee and an older lady who seemed to be a manager or something and they said "it's odd that it hasn't been moved." That's all they said. This is a prime example of how not to run a business. I definitely will not be returning here. read more

Jazz, Rock, Pop Guitar I have been a guitar student all my life but it was not until I met Ned Aswell, guitar instructor at Manor Music, that I made several, exponential breakthroughs in guitar playing. I once read the following: The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires (by William Arthur Ward). But it was not until I had the good fortune of running into Ned that I realized that he is a great teacher who inspires. More than a teacher, he is a consultant and a great critic of music. Ned teaches all levels, from beginner to advanced, but you better come prepared! I have had plenty of guitar instructors, some very patient, some very skillful, some very talented, some very arrogant. But Ned brought out the music in me. Music waiting dormant within the confines of my soul. He brought me to really understanding chord patterns, melodic soloing, song writing. (I get the feeling that most music teachers want to keep you in a limited capacity so that they can have income security.) And I'm still learning, and everyday I find something new about my guitar playing. Anyone can teach you how to read music, play chords, and do scales. Yes, these elements are very important, but Ned brings in another dimension in music that it's not easy to quantify. read more

Just learned about this place in the past year. I took beginning ukulele lessons and found out they sold ukes, uke strings, cases, tuners, music books, etc. here. Don't go in here looking for fun, cool gift ideas for the music lover in your life. I'd say you should go here for a purpose. It's not really an attractive place to browse through; however, that being said, I did find interesting things I wasn't necessarily looking for today - flute cleaning kits, finger picks w/different flexibility and color, music stands, soft/hard uke cases ranging in price b/w $20 - $40, slide oil (i don't know what that is but I wanted to say/write it). They have a pretty good selection of audio equipment, too. They're an "American DJ" authorized dealer if that means anything to anyone. Props to Miguel, the helpful and knowledgeable employee who answered my questions today. He seems to live & breathe music so I felt confident with his feedback and opinions. And props to the city of Pacifica for having a music store. Let's keep these places around, along with music programs in the schools. This place was suggested to me by a friend who's a musician. Great Place for , rentals, music lessons, and service Manor Music is a small music store with a hometown feel. I've been coming here for years to buy the little things for my musical instruments. If you need to rent anything for a party, sound or lighting wise, they have a variety of Dj and Live PA equipment available. Prices for their musical instruments are so so. I believe it's harder for them to compete with the bigger chains since they're such a small store. Their forte are their musical teachers. You can schedule music lessons from guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone, and others. I'll keep coming back for the friendly and knowledgeable service. read more

They let me browse and touch everything without being overbearing. They asked if I needed help once then left me alone, which I liked. They only sell one brand of guitar, I forgot what the name was, but having an acoustic Taylor I wasn't impressed with their top of the line model. Good deal on Gibson picks was 0.80, got a Duncan thumbpick to try out, but didn't end up liking it, the item return was no trouble. They offer guitar lessons in a cramped soundbooth looked clostrophobic. Average selection of amps, but none available to test drive like in Guitar Centers. read more

Brought my daughter's violin to have the strings replaced as advised by her music teacher, which was the first time for us since my daughter just started on the violin. But when she had her next violin lesson, her teacher pointed out how the "new" strings were dirty and rusty, which we did not notice, not having been familiar with what to look for since we had no previous experience with caring for violins. We brought it back to complain and this time we checked the "new" strings while checking for those things that my daughter's teacher told us to look for, but at my daughter's next lesson, her teacher pointed out that some of the spacers that buffer the tension of the strings on the bridge, were missing! When we came back again, we did not raise a fuss or anything but just pointed out that this was our third trip back because of the strings and now the issue of the spacers and the senior-aged woman who I think owns the place, started to berate us, raising her voice, saying how dare we accuse them of doing those things, how they've been a fixture in Pacifica for so many years, etc., etc! A friend and I stopped by to kill some time and just check the place out. Nice selection of acoustics. Hung out for a good 45 minutes playing a bunch of acoustics and electrics - no annoying sales-person hounding us either. I had my eye on a Greg Bennett mahogany top acoustic(looks like a Martin by the way), and sounded really good too. My friend liked the Wine Red Greg Bennett acoustic. So we asked the old lady (the owner I think) what she could do for us if we bought them both. She gave us a nice discount, and threw in a strap and set of Martin replacement strings - Nice. I have to agree with Conor C.; I really like the employees but the owner is just a little odd. My husband was chatting with an employee and I guess she thought he wasn't going to buy anything because she interrupted them to redirect the employee to another customer. Instead of buying there my husband went on line; it's really too bad as we like to support local businesses and we like to spend our disposable income on music stuff (we have two kids taking lessons, my husband plays guitar and I play various wind instruments) but I'd rather not hand my money over to someone who is clearly not interested in making customers feel welcome and comfortable in their store. read more

Little store that could be so much more. I've been going to local music stores for as long as I remember. So I get it. They are not gonna have the selection say of a Guitar Center or any specialty music store. But even giving them a pass on selection the store in it's current state can be so much more. It's getting pretty cluttered inside. Lot's of boxes and items haphazardly stacked up. My son takes piano lessons and the walk to the back is funny. As you near the back of the store it gets junkier and more crowded. Almost horder like. The back rooms where the lessons take place barely seem up to code. The guitar selection seems to be even more limited than in years past. They don't have much in the way of guitar effects and they really only carry Pevy amps with any variety. This store essentially exist to serve local grade school students and to rent equipment. My son takes piano lessons there from a greta teacher and they rent band instruments (horns, woodwinds, etc). They seem to have a sizable business in renting PAs. I say this cause about 1/3 of the store is PAs stacked up on top of each other. read more

I haven't visited this shop since they were next door to the Seavue Movie theater... quite a while. But I needed a practice bass amp since I can't play my pro rig past 2 without blowing out the family room windows. So after visiting Guitar Center in San Ho, and Gelb in RWC, why not give it a shot. It's a nice shop. You can browse and check out the guitars... they must get some kind of promo discount from Fender. They got sheet music, accessories... not much on drums that I noticed. But they do have a cool consignment of used amps. Lucky me! So after plugging into a few here and there, they cut me a cool deal on a Peavey TKO w/ a 15" Black Widow. Both the sales person and his boss lady were friendly and knowledgeable. They even hauled it out to my car in the lot. The guitar & amp selection isn't as wide as Gelb, but it isn't a bad place to spend some time and chill, check out what odds n ends that might interest you. read more

Great value, service and price! We decided (last minute) to have some of our kids friends over for new years eve and thought about getting a strobe light to spice up the party. The day of the party, I called manor music to see if they rented strobe lights - the answer was yes. I ended up leaving there with a a strobe, disco ball, 2 lights for the disco ball and a cool stand to house everything - all for $35 (3 day rental) I was shocked as I am in video production and use another outfit where our shop is in redwood city where this would have cost at least 3x this amount. Manor Music came through and 13 5-7 yr olds had their 1st dance party / mosh pit? Happy New Yr Manor music - we are still lucky to have you in town after all these years! read more

Love this place. Came in with my nephew who had bought a ukulele online but he was having trouble with the tuner. The people here were great showed him how to use the tuner and talked with him about the instrument. I really enjoyed browsing through the store and I found some fun sheet music. This music store has been in business for many years but I wonder how or why. Zero customer service. I brought instrument in for repair (simple re-string). Went to pick it up two days after promise date. The guy behind the counter says "I don't know where the instrument may be; you will have to wait for the other guy to come into the store". I wait, the other guy come in, finds it, says "not ready, maybe next week". No phone call to say anything about delay. Anyway, I decided to go elsewhere. Caused me huge inconvenience but maybe another shop will provide better service. read more

It's interesting that four of the six 'filtered' reviews are one star ratings for this business. Yelp seems to be as bogus as Manor Music. Update to my review (now currently hidden): A month since I went in and purchased a classical guitar and then was told they didn't know if it was a repair, a consignment or an item they could sell from their own stock. Seems they still can't identify if it's a repair consignment or otherwise. Which is cool by me because I already went somewhere else and found a better classical guitar for less money and am thrilled with my new purchase. I'll never set foot inside this store again. Why my original review was filtered I don't know. It was an honest review of what is a poorly run business. Now I know not to trust anything about Yelp either. read more
