I don't get the great reviews, and here's why: 1. There are way too many students in the classes I saw. 2. The classes were chaotic and disorganized. 3. I highly recommend the programs/classes here!!! You will NOT be disappointed! Sensei Mark Cameron is amazing with the students! My child has been training here now for 2+years. They teach Shaolin Kempo & Shotokan Karate. The training includes physical exercise, strength training, and self defense. BUT- even more than the physical training is also a component of the program that I think really sets MMA apart from other karate classes. Emotionally strengthening components of the programs & classes including self control, accountability, courage, confidence, kindness, self respect, respect for others, and so much more!! The quote from Sensei Mark Cameron states that at Manteca Martial Arts they believe that: "A Goal is a Dream with a Deadline." I'm pretty upset. My son did martial arts through Lathrop Parks and Rec, which is run by Manteca Martial Arts, and the regular teacher was great. Sensei Mark was the head of the program and would teach every now and then, and in the 4 months we were there he gradually started getting harder and harder on the kids. My son came home crying because Sensei Mark said that he would start demoting kids and taking away their belts if they didn't improve. I've seen him be overly and unnecessarily tough & MEAN towards any kids who are yellow belt and above. Some of these kids are 8 years old or younger, but he treats them all like they're teenagers in military school! His style reminds me of the bad guys in Cobra Kai. Never going back. read more

If you live in the area and are wondering where to sign up your kids THIS is the place!! Testing, gi, and belt fees are all included! The teachers clearly care about these kids and put their time and effort in to interacting with each of them to meet their individual needs. My toddler is 3, instructors from Monday where great, patient and willing to help him learn, my toddler gets nervous easily. But the older instructor was not even patient at all asked him to sit! And then asked if we could get out! I am so upset, common he is three! I was honestly going to enroll him full time. I do not agree with "imelda"'s review .. my son is three years old. He is learning to listen, and follow instructions. The teachers are strict , patience and fun. My son loves the class. Excellent place to go! My son has been a member since Sept 2010 and we have been VERY pleased with his involvement. He has always been a good kid, but at 6 & now 7, he has a lot of energy to release! This has not only given him a great outlet but the discipline taught & expected here has worked very well with his young impatience. We are proud to watch him grow & succeed thru his ranks. MMA starts with as young as 3 yrs old with their Tiger program & also have adult classes available. They focus on (forgive my spelling/misspelling?) We initially enrolled my son to give him some new extracurriculars to engage in, never guessing what an education it would be for him. Senseis Mark, Courtney and Katie do an excellent job of not only teaching martial arts and stranger danger, but also teaching some history of the art form. Most importantly, they teach the tenets of becoming a good human being: respect for authority, hard work, service. The instructors are also great with kids, they make everything fun and are endlessly patient. It's been 4 months and my son still wants to go everyday! So glad we found this dojo! read more

If your child is not an advanced rank this place is OK, Sensei Courtney is great, but they cram as many kids into this small dojo as they can. If your child is a more advanced rank, they do not have time in the class to get to those kids. My child waited weeks just for someone to show him his move so I could record it and my child could practice at home. Then there is the time of the month where they learn weapons and there is too many kids in there! Oh, and then when the kids are sparring and there is only one sensei, the kids are left in the back sparring each other with little supervision. If you plan to leave the dojo you have to start over as there is hardly no where, if anywhere at all that matches the martial arts they do here! read more

Both of my children have been training at this dojo for about 6-7 months and I am so glad that we have brought them here. Sensei Courtney and Sensei Katie take their training seriously but make it fun for the kids. My little brother has been coming here for years. He received his black belt in January 2015 and it was definitely a big accomplishment for him. He learned so much here and made some nice friends. However, the only reason my parents stopped him from going there is because we paid a monthly fee that was "late". It was November of 2015. If not at the beginning of the month, you get the chance to pay the monthly fee one day before the beginning of the month. If you do not pay at the beginning of the month or before the month, you will get fined an extra amount. In November of 2015, the first day of November was on a Sunday and they are closed every Sunday. The day before, October 31, 2015, was Saturday. And they close every Saturday as well. My family paid the amount on that Monday, which was November 2, 2015. Two days later, the instructor tells my brother that he is fined an additional amount for "late fees". When he told my parents, my parents were angry and confronted them of how the beginning of the month was a weekend and how the day before the beginning of the month was a weekend. If they're closed, it is impossible to pay the monthly fees. My mother even pointed out how most businesses usually accept fees the first five days or the first week of a new month and it is not understandable to why this business should be any different. My parents paid the additional fee and told them that this will be the last time my brother comes here because the way they expect fees are ridiculous, especially if it comes to something that happened to my little brother. This place has definitely changed from the day my brother first stepped into the dojo to what it is now. read more

Sensei Mark and his staff are great with children. Mark is teaching the kids old school, teaches the history and enforces the rules which I love. We've been to places that just take your money and play a bunch of games and here, it's different. My son is learning about karate and discipline and how to stay safe from strangers ,what to do about bullying, and being rewarded for good grades. The price is more than affordable as he can attend up to five days a week. He is progressing in karate and has a ton of confidence. They are really good with kids and it's a great way to build friendships. read more
