A red flag should have went off when I saw how little they were going to charge me. If I had gone to Los Angeles or San Francisco I could have paid more money and got exactly what I asked for. I asked for 2 new pickups to be installed, but with added independent coil splitting knobs. I supplied the two potentiometers (got one installed), tone capacitor (never got back) , new knobs (and allen wrench I didn't get back), wires, I even gave them the reamer to use (all brand new), the pickups, and wiring diagrams. Even strings. It took them a week, and during that time apparently one of the brand new CTS pots broke (they were in bubble wrap they came in) and he swapped it with an unknown pot and didn't use the tone capacitor that was provided (which I also didn't get back). The actual wiring job and soldering looked excellent however. He put the original knobs back on, so when I put the new knobs on at home I saw that they didn't fit properly and they didn't match which was disappointing (only one was flush with the body). I had asked that he lowered the action and the action was left the same and in fact the bridge was not even set up, it was the same as I gave it to him. For $30 I feel like I can't bitch about the work because you get what you pay for. Next time I will just do the work myself. I had a bad feeling about taking it to them anyways. When I took the guitar back in the repair man wasn't there (Nick?). A different guy adjusted the knob so that it at least appears to match the other one. The guy could have just called me when the pot broke and I would have bought another so that they would still be matching pots. No communication. Tried to make it easy for him, gave him everything for the job, still didn't get it right. Should have done it myself. I just won't have them do any more work for me. Mediocrity and complacency, is he proud of that job? read more

I had an interaction with this shop in which an employee told me, quote "do you really think buying this item is a good idea if you say you don't have money". I found it to be an incredibly inappropriate way for a retail store associate to speak to a customer. I was very cordial and civil while explaining who I am as a musician, and asked about a small deal for an item I found better prices of elsewhere. The worker got very defensive.. started being quite disrespectful and demeaning, saying i would be taking food out of his mouth, and that i am very "unprofessional" and that "he won't cave in to my request.. we get questions like this all day everyday", they went on to explain. What ever happened to being nice? Working with your potential customers and having a bit of sympathy and understanding for peoples' situations? and in 2020 amid a pandemic? Something seems to be going on beneath the surface here at Mantova's.. I sense a frustrated staff, ready to take it out on people who shop there. What are they without their customers, really? Seems like the new owner brothers, and/or the staff they hire is not in the right line of work, and aren't properly trained in the fine art of customer service, retail negotiations, and being a true music sales/service company. My sense is that they are going under soon and we are witnessing the beginning of a few-year downfall in which they will no longer be able to keep their doors open, sadly. I don't recommend walking in to this store or shopping with them online unless you want to get talked down to, told when or how to spend your money, and belittled as if you are being reprimanded by a parent figure. I think pMantova's is the best music store this side of San Francisco. Not only do they have an extensive collection of instruments, but their staff is very knowledgeable. I was looking for a ukulele for my granddaughters birthday and they had several to choose from. My granddaughter decided she wanted a different ukulele so we went back to the store and had no problems with the exchange. read more

I have heard from Humboldt locals that this store does not care about its customers.The first time was over purchase price of a pack of strings after I had just purchased a guitar for just under $1,000. It made me so mad I swore I would never go in there again. However, I did and this time, I heard it come right out of the guys mouth myself. I was looking to purchase 3 acoustic guitars and one electric all at once and could never get a price out of him. He wanted me to trade my equipment in for a deal. However, my guitars are better than his so why would I do that? Only an idiot would do that. He said " I don't care if you buy or not." and blew me off. I chose not! So, I bought my stuff from Sweetwater once again. Just so you know Mantova Two Street, I don't care about you either. You are the only game in town but that does not mean you can be disrespectful to your customers. This is the second time I was disrespected I think by the young guy in his thirty's sort of heavy set, the owners son I believe. I have spent over $10,000 dollars in the last year buying music equipment and not one dime did you get because you are disrespectful. Yo9u don't and pretty soon your public will start treating you just like guitar center who know on cares about anymore either. Service and product is your business. Customer service sucks and your products are so special that you can't find them online for less and get better service free shipping and free returns if you don't like the product. Best music shop in Humboldt, hands-down! I've been shopping here since before the Mantova brothers took over, back when it was just "Two Street Music." It's always been good, but the place has improved even more ever since the brothers bought it. They clearly have a real passion for music and don't come off as snobs or elitists the way some music shop employees do (although that's not an indictment of any other local music shops... just some of the ones I've been to in larger cities). If you don't know how to use something or what you need, they'll help you find it. I recently purchased a G&L USA Legacy from them and I couldn't be more pleased. I was helped by several staff members while making my purchase decision, and I got the opportunity to play a very large variety of guitars before I settled on the G&L. I'll have to not go back for a while though... my wallet can't take it. Their prices are good, don't get me wrong... it's my willpower that's got problems. I took my old bass guitar in to ask some advice about the action today, and they adjusted the neck for free. It was SO much better that it felt like a new guitar! We've been going to Mantova's Two Street Music for a very long time. When we still lived in San Francisco, we'd drive up whenever we had a few days free and go camping, north of Eureka. And every time we'd stop into Mantova's to check out their used instruments, buy some strings, and look at what was happening there. The owners were always friendly and knowledgeable. One time Jimmy bought a 100-year-old button-key squeeze-box that was there on consignment -sitting on a shelf, broken, dusty, and sad. He bought it, much to everyone's surprise. He worked on it the whole time we were camping, continued when we got home, and today it's a beautiful reconditioned instrument that sounds awesome! We moved to Mckinleyville in 2001 and started our business, Bongo Boy. We built a recording studio behind our home, and now offer many other services for musicians and filmmakers. We've been recommending Two Street Music to anyone who asks where to go when they need anything from drumsticks to amps, and we always hear a thank-you after they've been there. Worst experience ever!!! We bought a guitar for our 17 year old autistic son. Anthony sold him a guitar completly inappropriate for my son, which broke repeatedly, not to the fault of my son. When we brought it back for repair, they told him it broke because my son didnt know how to use it properly, even though he has been playing for 3 years and is very good. Anthony said my son didnt know how to play and refused to sell him another guitar until he learned how! This disrespectful patronizing tone and hurtful action to my special needs son has devastated him and discouraged him from music. I've known this location before Mantova's took it over, and the difference has been astonishing from Day One. The prior owners pitched to a perceived audience, and a grey-haired woman could stand around for a half hour without so much as a greeting while the young males walking in the door were shown every item in the shop. Anthony Mantova and his crowd wait on everybody the minute they come in. They get to know your name and interests, but they don't slight new people either, and they don't "profile" potential customers.They carry a wide selection of instruments and amps, of which they will share their honest opinions (for instance, appropriateness to the customer's style or intended use, clarity, loudness, and whether the customer might meet their expectations at a sightly lower price with something else. Their repair person is in a lot of demand, so the turnover for repairs can be slow at high traffic times, but he's meticulous and follows up on your satisfaction with his work. They will generally refer high-end guitar repairs out to Moonstone: like Mr. Kringle on 34th Street, they seem to prefer repeat business to the fast buck. The Mantovas are a musical family and their staff are musicians, so you will never find them ignorant of a product. They encourage people to try out instruments and amps. (Their knowledge of amps is encyclopedic. I sometimes use the place for a school, since mine is not.) Musicians and bands can sign up to play there for Arts Alive. They have a nice sound stage, they provide seating for listeners, and they let you use their toys for amplifications (which if you ask me, is crazy like a fox.) They also carry a wide variety of cables, strings, picks, rhythm thingums, polishes and cloths, and other music related whatnot. Fun place, friendly knowledgable staff. I have had a lap harp tuned here, sold a saxaphone, bought a wonderful microphone and assorted other experiences. It is always upbeat in this store. Always treated with respect even when I am completely clueless about a product. The owner is on site most of the time and on the floor working with the staff. Very awesome place for most, of not all of your musical needs, from purchasing instruments, to getting them tuned or repaired, to selling on consignment (if saleable of course) and so much more. When I first came to Eureka, I was unimpressed with this music store, but since the Mantova brothers bought it, the place has grown into a one-stop music shop. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly, plus they aren't just trying to steer you toward instruments with the highest price points. I love their enthusiasm and their range of products -- I've bought an Irish flute, a mouth harp, music theory cards and a few other things from that shop. I purchased a used guitar from Mantova's via the Reverb site. The instrument was listed as being in 'Great Condition' and only needing a setup. The guitar was completely untunable, a fact that should have been apparent to anyone attempting to play it. I had it set up per the seller's recommendation, and still no luck. My opinion of anyone selling anything is not based on what they promise before the sale, but on how they treat you afterwards. Mantova's failed to step up and resolve this, so basically I will have to spend more on this guitar to get it fixed than if I'd have purchased a new one to begin with. My recommendation is to completely avoid this store. read more

This is my second review of this company. I do not know what happened to my other review or the one I read when I posted my review. My review mentioned that I tried to get my clarinet repaired. I was told that it would take two to four weeks. Eight weeks later they had not yet touched my clarinet. When I complained to the store I was told that the salesperson should not have told my a estimated time. The repair guy was rude and told me that he would get to the clarinet "soon". After my review they took two more weeks to tell me that they would not fix my clarinet. Honestly, I'm not sure they were capable of fixing it. I read another bad review on their repair person. Seems he scratched a very expensive guitar. Both these reviews have disappeared. I'm not sure why. But I recommend picking a different repair person than the one at Two Street Music in Eureka. read more

Frankly 5 stars just doesn't cut the experience we have had with this community gem! 10 stars is more like it. Not only have we acquired new, high quality instruments and professional sound equipment at great prices, we have also brought in old instruments for service, tune up and repair. Their service department is top notch and highly professional. Their service prices are incredibly reasonable and their turnaround time is great.
