I was considering another procedure that they told me would cost close to $5k (out of pocket), but I'm afraid they will continue to send me bills and squeeze me for more money. Today, I had an exceptional experience with Dee, the Dental Hygienist at Manus Dental Hyde Park. She provided top-notch care, was highly professional, and did an outstanding job cleaning my teeth. I get cleanings annually, and I haven't had such a thorough experience in a very long time. Dee listened carefully to my concerns and followed up with great attention to detail and advice. Additionally, my X-rays and fluoride treatment, performed by Kai and AJ, were handled professionally and with care. However, I was disappointed to learn that two composite fillings I received earlier this year from Dr. Obaisi need to be redone--at my expense. Fillings should not require replacement in less than a year. I appealed to Dr. Obaisi, explaining that since the work was done so recently, it should be corrected free of charge. Unfortunately, she did not agree, which left me quite disappointed. My Tooth 29 & 12 Resin composite -1's posterior was done on 12/12/23 one year ago. They do great work. I had to get a lot of corrective work done because my previous dentists messed me up (Dental Dreams on 83rd & Holland). Their work is worth the pay (my insurance covers a lot...I have a PPO). I currently have Invisalign. Yes, they can be a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Unfortunately I chose this practice when I first moved to town. The energy from the staff is not great, with exception of a few hygienists. One thing I particularly didn't like was the constant push to sell me a product I didn't need - it happened on every visit. Think used car salesman behavior. Today, I went in to have a filling repaired. It was the second time it had fallen out! I told Dr. Obeisi, the dentist who had done the original filling and also the first replacement, that I no longer had dental insurance but felt the practice should pay because I had insurance when it was originally filled as well as for the first replacement. Her comment, "you got this in 2020 so it's ready to be replaced." WHAT?!?! When she originally put that 2020 filling in, she needed to pull out an amalgam filling that had been in my head for over 30 years! Thinking back, she gave me some song and dance about why the amalgam needed to be replaced with porcelain. She was wrong, she does shoddy work, and she can't stand by her work. My friends had left that practice a while ago and I should have heeded their advice. read more

I'm so sad to leave such a low review, but I should have read her reviews here before trusting Dr. Obaisi with my or my daughters dental care. We are new to Chicago & had to leave our amazing dentist when we moved. Dr. Obaisi's hygienist staff is terrific. But, they don't make up for the experience I've had after multiple visits. She repaired a bonded tooth & instructed me to be careful with it, I have been extremely careful. When it chipped in weeks, due to lack of material at the corner of the tooth, she wanted to charge me $200 to repair it & says she told me to get a veneer instead; when I've been bonding the tooth for over 20 years. She made it my fault for chipping & not paying to get a veneer. Additionally, when I asked about cosmetic dentistry, she gave me a massive quote, when I returned to ask questions, she admitted to not having experience with my request & said she's going to have me do part of the work somewhere else & some with her. She didn't have photo, reviews, examples of her work, or answers to my many questions about the procedure. Trust that you may be upsold procedures you don't necessarily need, and she may not have done similar work previously. Get a second opinion & use caution when coming here. Maybe she's best for fillings & cleanings. I wish I could give her a better review. But it's our teeth we are dealing with here. read more

I went to Manus in February to have my wisdom teeth removed. The procedure went fine, the doctors were nice, but HOLY MOLY the billing here is crazy! I paid $850 out of pocket and my insurance paid the rest, and I move on with my life and personal budget. Fast forward to the end of July. I get a notice saying that I still owe $400! I call Manus and they forward me some to group they contract out to do their billing (I can't talk to anyone at the dentist office). They give me the run around, explain why there's nothing they can do about the payment, and eventually say "if I can't pay, it'll go to a collection agency". My issue isn't with how much I'm paying (I have good insurance and I don't know enough about the procedures to know if $1250 out of pocket is a lot or a little). My issue is that I paid, they told me I was okay, then almost 6 months later they reach back and tell me I owe an extra $400. read more

Over the course of a month, I made several visits to Manus Dental, which included a new patient exam, dental cleaning, and dental fillings. Ultimately I chose to discontinue receiving care at this dental practice for the reasons enumerated below. 1) Scheduling is a pain. What could have been two visits was stretched out into four. When scheduling, I was clear that I would like a dental exam and cleaning on the same day. However, upon the completion of the exam by the dentist I was informed that I was scheduled only for the exam and not the cleaning. Their explanation was that the dentist and the hygienist have separate schedules. In all my previous experiences with dental exams, they were paired with a cleaning. Not only is that not the case here, what is even worse is that you may not find that out until the day of your appointment. Decoupling the schedules of the hygienist and the dentist allows them to accommodate more patients for each type of service (at the expense of the patient, who may need to take time off on multiple days). More patients means tighter schedules for the dentists, so if you need some unexpected work done, you will need to schedule an additional appointment. During the actual appointments, the care I received felt rushed, as if the doctor was squeezing in my appointment during a coffee break. 2) Low quality of the dental work. The scheduling issue directly contributed to a decrease in the quality of the dental work that I received. Of the three fillings that were done at Manus Dental, within a couple of weeks one came off completely and the other was discovered to be in the process of detaching. Pictures of the partially detached filling revealed work that looked sloppy even to a non-professional like me. The process of redoing the fillings at a different dental office took significantly longer than the original fillings (but cost half as much, see point 3), which to me is an indicator that my procedures were not allocated the appropriate amount of time and attention at Manus Dental. Additionally, I have a suspicion that the dentists here are maybe a little too enthusiastic to prescribe procedures such as cavity fillings. During my exam, I was told that I have six cavities, whereas previous exams at different practices consistently revealed at most one or two each year (with no changes in my dental hygiene routines). I have not yet confirmed with my new dentist whether all those cavities actually need work, so this may be nothing but a suspicion, but it brings me to my next point: 3) Shady billing practices. For each of my visits, I was provided with a nice printout with all of the suggested procedures and associated costs. This was encouraging, given that several previous reviews mentioned that Manus Dental has been working on improving their billing transparency. However, upon comparing printouts from two different visits, I found that the exact same procedures (same tooth number, billing code, etc.) were quoted at different prices before insurance. Additionally, several entries were changed to different values with whiteout and ballpoint pen. In summary, I am not confident in the transparency of this dental office's billing practices and I suspect that I was overcharged for most of my treatment. --- The only positive thing that I can say about Manus Dental is that I was able get an appointment relatively quickly (at least in the middle of the day). However, this positive becomes irrelevant when the above three points are taken into account. These observations resonate with some of the complaints found in other reviews, which I regretfully ignored as I needed to see a dentist quickly. I really wish this place worked out for me, since it is conveniently located in Hyde Park. However, the Loop and South Loop both have a variety of smaller dental practices and are just a short Metra ride away. Save yourself time, money, and frustration, and seek treatment at a dental practice that does not prioritize patient throughput and profits over treatment quality. read more

I tried to get an appointment with Dr. Rudolph since all these reviews rave about her. The receptionist told me she was out of town- indefinitely. I should have realized something was odd then. I made an appointment with Dr. MacDonald, who did try to push me into things (without even asking) which I didn't want, didn't need, and can't afford. He told me I had 8 cavities, and needed at least 3 fillings, despite never having a cavity in my life and my previous dentist whom I saw 7 months ago telling me I didn't have any cavities. My dental hygiene and diet have not changed recently, so there is no way I could have acquired so many cavities in 7 months. I am not even sure that the teeth x-rays were of my teeth. The appointment I wanted was for a routine biannual cleaning, but they insisted on x-rays since I was a first time patient. Little did I know that x-rays were their way of making more money. Besides telling me I had all these cavities, they said I required a deep cleaning that would require me to pay $68 out of pocket. They told me this right before they were about to start cleaning. I got up from the chair and politely told them I wanted a second opinion and no longer wished to get my teeth cleaned here. Also the day I went, the A/C was broken so their front doors were open and there was incredible noisy construction nearby. And the office was messy, with lots of debris on the carpet in front of reception. These offices were also very small, and there was no privacy as a patient- no individual rooms for cleaning or "x-rays." There were almost useless partitions between the dentist chairs. I just moved to Chicago and picked this place because of the good reviews, but all the good reviews are for Dr. Rudolph. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This place was a massive waste of my time and my dental insurance usage. read more

I went in one day and talked to a young lady to make an appointment and she was very nice, however upon arriving to the appointment the main dentist had a very negative demeanor. I informed her that she was getting ready to fill a cavity that I don't want the grey stuff whatever that was I wanted her to put the white filling in so that the tooth wouldn't look this color. She got all pissed off and told me I'll just have to come back another time with a bad attitude. Needless to say I did not step foot back in this place again. If you don't realize that your customers are more important than your attitude, you probably shouldn't be in business to serve the public. Never receive such prejudiced service. I set an appointment with Manus Dental two weeks in advance, I went out of my way to request time off from work. The day of my appointment, I called in advance to confirm the time, and was notified by a rude receptionist that my name was not listed on the appointment listing for the day. I was upset because it really was inconvenient to have set something up, called a week in advance to confirm only to find out the day of that someone on staff did not schedule correctly, or at all. I had a temporary onlay that fell out on a Saturday morning and needed to be replaced. It took hours to get in contact with the office and I was then told that they couldn't get me in till Monday. I was a patient for over 17 years. I encouraged my entire family and friends to go to them. The quality of service was unparalleled. It was 5 stars (now, Manus deserves a half a star). When we moved sides of town, we switched to their sister office and continued to have great care. My children progressed through their pediatric dental care into orthodontics and finally adult care. Over the past 3-4 years we have experienced worsening care. This is a global problem at Manus (front desk, hygienists, dentists, billing, management). We first noticed dentists leaving. Now, It is a virtual revolving door of hygienists and staff. My family has had 3 different primary dentists in the last year. We hung in there dismissing every problem because we were loyal customers and had been with them for so long. The problems began to add up with billing, appointments being cancelled and shortened resulting in missed services. The new staff is dismissive and does not read the chart prior to entering the room. The new dentists are not as knowledgeable as previous ones and the care is lacking the quality it once had. Because we were patients for so long I tried to reach out to management. The office managers at the Hyde Park and River North offices are non-responsive and a call back is unlikely to happen even after multiple attempts. I even left a message on the general company box. I tried to salvage this 17 year healthcare relationship. I'm sad to say it, bye Manus and good luck. My family and friends are going elsewhere. read more

I'm honestly shocked at some of the bad reviews on here. Things must have changed since they were written because my experience was nothing short of incredible. I have rarely (if ever) have positive experiences with dentists, and I was very nervous about this appointment because I needed to get out 4 wisdom teeth at once. I had only recently gotten dental insurance so I had no referring doctor or recent dental reports. I was sure that the process would be long and arduous and wasn't at all sure I'd be able to get the teeth out on the day of my appointment. From the minute I arrived all of the staff were extremely kind and helpful. The office was lovely and comfortable. I was called essentially the moment I finished the intake paperwork and taken back to Dr. Obaisi for a quick x-ray and referral to the oral surgeon. This all took about 5 minutes, and then she sent me and my information across the office to the oral surgery suite. Again, I was very quickly called in for a consult with Dr. Chae who confirmed that he could remove all 4 teeth during that visit if I wanted with the anesthetic procedure of my choice (local + nitrous oxide or local + deep sedation). Dr. Chae was probably one of the best doctors of any variety I've ever spoken to. He was very clear and explicit about what needed to be done and why as well as explaining the relative risks of the procedure. I really appreciate any doctor who can explain both what they are doing and why in laymen's terms without condescending to the patient at all. I chose to do nitrous oxide and local anesthetic rather than deep sedation, and the dental staff brought me a full list of what the charges would be and what my insurance would cover before I chose to proceed. Once I'd agreed to this, Dr. Chae completed all 4 extractions in under 30 minutes. I'm now two days out from the surgery and I'm in almost no pain with only very minor swelling. The surgery and recovery have both been far easier than I anticipated. My experience at manus dental was by far my best experience with any dentist or medical doctor ever. Thanks guys! read more

In brief: Select a different dentist and treat yo' self with the money you save! The whole tooth and nothing but the tooth: I had two appointments here....one for a cleaning and another to replace an old filling. My dental hygienist and dentist were both fabulous. However, the prices are bonkers bad. Manus Dental hooked me with the new-patient deal. But, after the initial appointment comes the high-price bomb: $166 for a cleaning. At Lincoln Park smiles or Kaufman & Kaufman, a cleaning is ~$115-120, and they have similar new patient deals! Manus Dental also initially tried to overcharge me (additional $45) for a fluoride polish (actually $28). I asked to see an itemized receipt, then they adjusted the cost immediately, but it was frustrating all the same. At best they were careless with billing: at worst they were deceitful. I also paid over $300 for a 1 surface resin filling -- that's nearly 50% more the average cost in Chicago. No no no. Not the place to go. I saw Dr. Christensen, who said that I had two cavities, and on top of that I needed a filling redone. This seemed odd to me as the filling had be done by someone pretty top notch. I emailed the x-ray and some photos of my teeth that Dr. Christensen took to the doctor who did my fillings, and his response was to say that not only did he not see any cavities, but he wasn't convinced that the photos were of my teeth! It was succinct and kind of dry. It made me think that she really didn't care she was losing a family. Again, we never had problems with the care she provided. She is an excellent dentist. The damage was unbelievable-- unprofessional and ignorant job that tremendous health issues and pain escalating over the years into TMJ issues, facial nerve inflammation and pain, extreme pain and bruising from bite misalignment, two root canals, and now a tooth needs to go, thousands of dollars, running around between neurologists, tmj specialists, prosthodontists and all kinds of specialists.... Unbelievable damage from this incompetence. I had to report her to the State of Illinois/Chicago Dental board and they investigated her for negligence, but who will repair the damage that she caused? read more

This is seriously the shadiest business out there. They find things "wrong" with you that no other dentist can find, do a bait and switch when you get in the office (i.e., I made an appointment for a cleaning, and all of a sudden, I need some deep clean procedure that they "must" do immediately that had never been mentioned before. This happened twice (once at the location downtown and once in Hyde Park). I fell for it the first time and ended up having to go back two more times. The second time, I refused and they said it would be malpractice if they didn't do it. What now?), and they will lie about bills that are owed to them. I hadn't planned on writing this review, bygones (I've quit the practice). But I just got a phone call from them saying I owed them money that I know (because I had the statement) that I didn't. What if I couldn't have proved that? What would have happened. Shady shady shady. However, they have lost my chart (more than once) and mis-scheduled me a couple times. So, buyer beware. Third, the really pretty bad: Dr. McDonald overdrilled one of my teeth and hit the root. Then, instead of recommending a root canal right away, he advised me to wait 4-6 weeks to see if it got better. He later denied that he said this. I am so glad my insurance allows me to come to Manus Dental Hyde Park. They moved into the area a couple of years ago, and they're the first and only destist I've gone to in Chicago. Their staff are friendly, their facilities are clean, and the location is very convenient. Dr. Rudolph is the dentist I see there, and she is super friendly! I've gone there a couple of times for routine cleanings, but yesterday I went for a bridge. As is normal, I was nervous all day not knowing what was going to happen. Well, Dr. Rudolph put me completely at ease, answered all my questions, and let me know exactly what she was doing while placing the bridge in. I've never felt more at ease with any other dentist. Even though she was running a bit late for my appointment, she made sure to apologize and my entire procedure took less than 30min. They also offer children's services via Dr. Morin, whom I saw interact with a couple of patients and parents, and he seems equally friendly and responsive. And there is a orthodontist on staff as well. I think he is more limited in his hours (every 1st and 3rd Friday). They used to not offer extraction services for wisdom teeth, but they do know. Unfortunately his schedule doesn't fit into mine, so I will have to go soemwhere else, but Dr. Rudolph kindly gave me a referral. So if you're in Hyde Park, and are looking for a Dentist, call Manus Dental and pray that your insurance will be taken here. read more

Do not go here if you need anything beyond a basic filling. Dr. Rudolph filed down so much of my tooth before she put the crown on that I have now been back twice because the crown and temporary replacement fell off and it hasn't even been six months. I have 4 other crowns and they have never fallen off and they have been in place for years. Today I came in as an emergency because the crown fell off and they gave me packets of temporary cement so that I could reapply the crown myself...and of course I do not work in the dental industry. They did offer to fit me in a few hours later though. If you have other options, go there instead. I am almost to the point where I am willing to see another dentist and pay just so I can get a solid solution to the crown. read more

Ugh. This place is quite clean and aesthetically pleasing. They seem to have up to date technology; they had a cool thing for taking pictures in your mouth, and they showed me the x-rays and photos on the TV and pointed to the areas where the issue was, which i really liked and appreciated. I've never had that at a dentist. That's basically where my positive feedback ends, though. After correctly identifying the problem -- part of my filling had fallen out -- the dentist proceeded to tell me I would be best off getting either a porcelain filling or a porcelain crown. She then gave me two different quotes -- both of which seemed very, very pricey to me, nearly $500 over what I'd heard at other dentists -- and told me I could choose which one I wanted. To her credit, she did explain the logic with porcelain -- that it would bind better, and last longer -- but she didn't really explain the differences between the two porcelain options... I had no guidance as to which option I should choose., and the doctor ran quickly away from me to talk to someone else immediately after that quick examination, which cost $130. I called Smith & Smith Smile Co., also in Hyde Park, and learned that their services were much, much less expensive. I then decided to make an appointment there. When I went to Smith & Smith, they thought I didn't even need a porcelain filling, just a normal composite one. That option -- though it probably won't last as long -- cost $900-$1400 less than I would have been paying at Manus, and so far, I believe, has served my needs. read more

HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! Do Not Waste Your Time!!!!! 1st time patient. I booked my appointment on August 27th for October 12th appointment. Manus is the only dentist I had every experienced where you have schedule two appointments for routine cleaning and that should have been a red flag. I specifically scheduled my appointment centered around both the dentist and hygienist would be in the office on the same day. Manus Dental Office text me 6 times and called me on the day of reminding on my appointment. The day of my appointment the receptionist called me at 11:30am unfortunately the dentist is not in the office to but you can still come in and get your teeth cleaned. What's the point if I have to come back so the dentist can review my x-rays and mouth. Manus Dental schedule two appointments on purpose so they can bill my insurance twice. I can't believe this office is still open. I do not trust Manus Dental and I'm sure they would have exaggerated me needing costly dental work to get more money. Absolutely not!!!! read more

My partner went in for a simple filling repair with very minor pain. They did x-rays and then without being able to look at the X-rays the dentist starts tapping around the mouth and counting off SIXTEEN fillings, TWO root canals, and full gum scaling! They call gum scaling a "deep cleaning" to downplay how expensive the procedure will be. Having had a good relationship with dentistry prior to this, it seemed like trusting authority (or maybe just folding under the very manipulative method of scheduling and billing that this reprobate institution employs) was maybe a good idea and my partner's treatment plan started with a 2,000 dollar root canal and crown as apart of the original 6,800 dollar estimate. read more

I don't trust dentists. I feel like they try to take advantage of me. I trust car salespeople more. At least I can tell when they are feeding me BS. Dentists, with their big words and fast talk, are a little harder to read. I got screwed over by another Hyde Park Dental practice a couple of years ago (Kaufman and Associates). Basically they suggested all this work, and never told me how much I would pay out of pocket, until I got a huge bill! I blame my mom because she always handled the dentist appointments growing up and I never paid attention to how dental insurance works ( I know, #firstworldproblems). So needless to say, I was apprehensive to visit the dentist again, but my teeth really needed it. Manus Dental just so happened to be in my network and is just a few blocks away from home. Let me say, the experience was great! Dr. Rudolph is AMAZING. After taking my X-rays, she: 1. Told me what she saw 2. Told me what that meant 3. Told me the course of action to resolve the problem and 4. OUTLINED WHAT WAS AND WASN'T COVERED BY INSURANCE!! How amazing is that? A dentist you can trust! The day of my dental appointment had arrived, and my colleagues and I were all comparing the usual dentist horror stories. While I wasn't worried, I wasn't expecting much from my trip to the dentist; I was just glad they could get me in, and that it was in Hyde Park. My colleagues wished me luck, and reminded me to brush my teeth. "And floss!" The next morning, I walked into the English Office and blissfully announced that I loved my new dentist and everything about Manus Dental Hyde Park. Dr. Rudolph is fantastic! She's super friendly and funny, and she also takes great care to ensure that you are comfortable and understand everything that is going to happen to you.
