We spent the day at Cabo Rojo beaches and just happened to pass by Mao's as we were leaving the area. SO GLAD WE STOPPED HERE! Despite an abundance of seafood in PR, so many restaurants do not know how to prepare it; most overcook it. That is definitely not the case at Mao's. We ordered lobster and sama fish caught that day. We asked them to split the lobster between our orders and the portions were still quite generous. Fish entrees were tender, flaky and cooked to perfection and the lobster equally amazing. read more

Went here for an early dinner trusting the good reviews. This was the very worst meal of our PR visit. Terrible service - such a rude and unwelcoming server who kept rushing us to order. My seafood asopao was very bland and runny and the seafood was all overcooked. The mofongo was better but portion super small (go to El Gato Negro yo the street!). The wait staff kept rolling a large cart around to deliver food and it was loud and obnoxious. The television was on and blasting a loud variety show. Hace años fui y me encanto, hoy volvi y fue mala la experiencia. Estaba lleno y los aires acondicionados no estaban todos prendidos. Los surullitos estaban ok, las masitas de pescao ni con limon y mayoketchup se dejaban comer. Decido que no iba a comer entonces pescao, me pedi arroz con habichuela y tostones de pana, estaban ok, notmales tipo cafeteria. Los que pidieron filete de pescao dijeron que estaba ok pero que estaba duro- era chillo que no se supone asi que me alegre que no pedi un plato de pescao. Los meseros estaban ok solo uno fue medio no aborrecio pero no los culpo por el calor. No venden alcohol, llevamos nuestra botella y cervezas, no se si es bueno o malo por que me hubiera encantado tener las bebidas alli mismo y no tener que cruzar al supermercado. The first time I went to Mao's was over 15 years ago. My family fell in love the with ambiance, the staff and most importantly the food. It had been over 10 years since my last visit and I was worried I would be disappointed- maybe time would have changed the things we loved. What a pleasant surprise to find the same owners, the same ambiance, AND the flavorful food that I had craved, bringing back memories from so so long ago. For starters - The bolitas de queso, ensalada de pulpo, and bolitas de pescado- exquisite. For a main course- Asopao de camarones, pescado empanado, filete Al ajillo, and pescado frito entero... none of these will leave you disappointed! And if you find time... wander out the back door and take in the beautiful view! A sunset will simply take your breath away! Let me just say, all the reviews posted before me had Mao's Seafood restaurant right on the money! The food was absolutely delicious! From the fried Chillo (Red Snapper) my mom had, down to my Camarones Alajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce), it was all wonderful. We first stopped at a restaurant that was a little down the road that we have eaten at before, but just weren't feeling it at all...... To find this place was a GEM!! The overall feel of the place was just so welcoming and homey. It was very family friendly (great to know since next time we will have children with us), the drinks were very good as well. My beer was nice and cold and her piña colada was great (better then the place before). But, not only was the feel great, the service was great as well. Lyomari was phenomenal. I always hate when the servers are hovering too much, but she gave us our space while still checking in.... It was just a great experience. And last but not least, the dessert was OMG!!!!! I will definitely be coming back and bringing more ppl. It's great to know that the town you and your family are from have hidden treasures such as this one! Thanks guys!!!!! read more

My party and I were in the area and craving PR seafood dishes and found Mao's while researching. We picked it based on reviews and comments from previous patrons and had pretty high expectations. I have eaten seafood all around the island and have many favorites all over except for the West coast so I was ready to add a new spot. Unfortunately, everything about my experience was subpar and disappointing at best. I can see how, if someone doesn't know any better, they can think it's good but it's really not. Service: We walked in and were not greeted until we chose our own table and started to sit. The 2 waitresses came over after and seemed upset we had done so. We weren't offered water and once we asked, they brought a small jar and plastic cups for a party of 8. I had to ask for 2 jars. Our server seemed annoyed to be working for the entirety of our visit and gave mediocre service, at best. She even sat down to eat while we waited for a few things we asked for. Forgot items we ordered, never made sure everything was ok, never took drink orders. They are not selling alcoholic drinks - this seems to be long term but they don't advertise as so. Beers/drinks with this type of food is a PR standard. We weren't looking to drink but in a different occasion, this could be very inconvenient. Food: I could have overlooked all of the above if the food had been on point. It wasn't even close. We ordered shrimp mofongo, fish fillet with garlic sauce, chicken in garlic sauce, octopus salad, shrimp in butter sauce, 'Chicharrones de Pollo' (supposed to be crispy fried chicken chunks), tostones, maduros, rice and beans. I can honestly say none of it was good. Maduros were hard and not ripe enough, tostones were previously frozen and dried out, the shrimp were hard and rubbery and so was the octopus, the fish, chicken, shrimp, mofongo and octopus all were drowned in butter and tasted the same. Mind you, the mofongo was ordered a la criolla and not with garlic or butter sauce. The mofongo was basically inedible. The only thing that wasn't hard to eat was the fish fillet but definitely bit worth eating in an island full of fresh, delicious seafood. Portions are considerably smaller that everywhere else and not in line with the prices. Especially, considering none of the food was fresh. Overall, waste of money and time. There's so much more better food anywhere else. It's sad that this is potentially the only impression of seafood in the island that many visitors may get. read more

5 star view of the sunset and ocean. The food was pretty good as well. Definitely recommend the cheese balls. Many people recommended the fried fish and got that during our time... We weren't that adventurous and got the garlic shrimp. They were pretty good. Awesome Pina coladas. read more

Fabuloso! We visited on our way back from cabo rojo lighthouse. The fish was tender and fresh - I had the red snapper with Spanish sauce, and my girlfriend had the grouper. We ate on the back porch, which had a great view and was very private. read more

They had both and both were fantastic. The view, that's great too. Sunset is perfect. The deck overlooks a small bay and small island just off the shore and there are massive fish waiting to fed. The entire restaurant was very clean. Service was excellent. The quality and taste of the seafood was superb. We had two fried Groupers, two Spiny Lobsters, one Octopus salad and one Conch salad. The only issue is that they don't serve alcoholic beverages, but the service and food quality mire than offset that issue. Highly recommended. read more

The food at Mao's Seafood Restaurant is good but not outstanding. Service staff is very courteous and polite. One surprising thing is that restaurant is not selling alcoholic beverages (beer or hard liquor). I am wondering how is this is possible in an area such Joyuda where people go to drink, eat, and to have an excellent time. The restaurant's management must rethink this situation as there is a lot of competition in that area. read more

Always great food. This time I had a snapper in tomato sauce. My daughter a shrimp Mofongo and aunt had Churrasco in mushroom sauce. All ver delicious. Unfortunately their liquor license expired and it will a few more day before they get it up and running. read more

Searched for this place after the wonderful reviews. Not sure what happened between the last review and 2/6/16, but this place was a ghost town on a Saturday evening. When we sat down the waiter said, we no longer have a liquor license, so we don't serve drinks. Yet the food prices for what looked like a decent meal was $18 and up. I'm only giving it 2 stars to be fair because I didn't taste the food. We walked out. You'll make a mistake if you go searching for thus restaurant as your go to restaurant of the evening. In fact, there wasn't much to any of the seafood restaurants in the promised seafood Mecca of Joyuda. We went to Gatito's down the street. No ambience, dirty bathrooms, but the seafood was fresh, and the prices were great. read more
