This was honestly one of those places that was kind of an afterthought. Basically everything in Rincon slows or closes on a Monday. However, had we known and eaten here earlier in the weekend, we probably would have returned before we left. It still has that PR slow pace, but the waitresses were friendly, and the food was very nice. If i remembered their names I would call them out, but whoever was working tonight was on point. The cremosa de aji sauce reminded me of a creamy garlic soup I had made at one time. My husband really wanted to try the shark so we made sure to make a stop here. From what I was told you can find shark in and around Rincon and surrounding areas. My husband ordered the shark in garlic sauce, I had a variety of empanadas and a red homemade sangria. So here comes the shark. Being the clown I am, I had to play the JAWS themesong for my husband as food came. It looks like a regular filet of fish. No weird smell and it taste like chicken. Just kidding but I had a tiny piece and it had a bacalao aka cod fish taste. Not bad. My empanadas were delicious and the sangria was muy bueno! Stumbled into a delightful dinner where we shared monfongo with chicken and broth, the grouper fillet with rice and beans, and a couple of starter empanadillas. Everything was flavorful, we got to practice a little Spanish (but mostly pointed at what we wanted to order on the menu), and raved about how tasty it was as we walked down the beach back to our hotel. Don't let the open air seating and casual set prevent you from stopping here. This spot is tried and true!!!! Been eating here for years each time we visit and EVERY time the food delicious, service wonderful, and the Medalla's ice cold. Located on 115 opposite the turn to Villa Cofresi and right next to Bonet Liquor, it's our favorite go to especially after the beach. Some people like to travel further to Kaplash for empanadas but we actually prefer them here (the shrimp is my personal favorite). read more

I really enjoyed this place. They have daily specials amd fresh juices. They have a very large parking area too. We had a couple things off the menu but i think the best iteam i ordered were the beans. The amount of flavor in it was astonishing! I really liked the waiter we had, she was very sweet and attentive even though she had the whole restaurant to just herself. The beers are about 3 bucks each and the meals can be inexpensive if you scoured the menu well the way i did. I suggest everyone go here and end with a tres leches! read more

I went down to Rincon for a few days to give a friend a hand settling in at his new place. It was my first trip to the Caribbean. I wanted to be sure to take in some of the local cuisine as opposed to eating at any of the multitude of standard fast food chain eateries. I wasn't overly excited to try the mofongo since I'm not a huge fan of plantains - but finally on my last nite in town I decided to give it a try. Tropical Gourmet was a favorite spot for my buddy. I really wish I had given in sooner trying mofongo, because this was the best meal of the trip. The outside was baked to a golden crust. I had the chicken, which was cooked in a red spicy, not hot spicy, broth like a stew. I added the orange flavored hot sauce that was on the counter and it was fantastic. I can't compare it to anything since this is the only time I've eaten this dish - but I am now a huge fan. My friend had the chicken parm and also raved about it. This is a great place to experience true Puerto Rican dining at a family owned restaurant. It was VERY reasonably priced. Two of us ate and had 3-4 beers and a shot for under $40. Locals were also eating there so you know it's authentic. If you go to Rincon - don't miss out on a great meal here and feel good that you are supporting a local business, read more

Absolutely the best comida criollo we had in Puerto Rico. This is a small outdoor place on the east side of the street, I believe it's near the Econo. It's just a hole in the wall where local people make fantastic local cuisine. I had the yuca ajilla, tostones pan, carne (pork) mofongo and conch empanadillas. They were all wonderful. You also can't beat the environment. If you want to know what Puerto Rico is like, eating delicious native food outdoors while being serenaded by the surrounding coqui can't be beat, except when two of the locals pulled out a guitar and started performing simply because they felt like it. This was awful. The stewed crab tasted as if it had been scraped off the bottom of a fishing boat. Everything else was fried. The criollo sauce is not homemade - its a commercially available product. If you like deep fried fish, deep fried meat, deep fried chicken, deep fried pork, deep fries deep fried deep fries, then this is the spot for you. I really enjoyed my meal here, with few exceptions. The conch empanada was not fabulous; the conch was overcooked and was too salty. But everything else was delicious. I had the mofongo relleno with shrimp. This was my first mofongo relleno but had read and heard so much about it and it did not disappoint. The plantains were perfectly cooked with a nice crisp on top and the shrimp stew was so flavorful and rich. I took home my leftovers, along with an order of mamposteado and a queso flan. The flan was tiny but delicious. I loved my morning breakfast of mamposteado and mofongo leftovers! The location isn't wonderful - there isn't any scenery but it is completely outside and is nice to be in the fresh air. You come for the food, not the ambiance. read more

Wanted to check this place out based on high reviews. We walked in and all the signs are in Spanish, except the restaurant name of course. We were welcomed and the one server who speaks English came over. Bartenders gave a friendly smile but don't know English (we sat at thr bar). We placed our orders and waited a bit for the food. I was excited to try authentic Puerto Rican food. My husband ordered the Mofongo with chicken. I kept it basic with grilled chicken plus beans and rice. The Mofongo came out in a challis style cup. The plantain crust on top and chicken stew underneath. A little different than expected, we thought the crust would be on the bottom then filled with stew. Anyway, he liked the plantain crust but thought the stew was just okay. My beans and rice were okay, seemed a little under seasoned. I had better tasting beans and rice in Old San Juan a few days prior. Grilled chicken topped with peppers, onions, and tomato was okay as well, not really blown away. Umm it was worth a try. Maybe we got the wrong thing. I feel no need to go back. Everything for about $30 so pretty cheap dinner which included 2 Modella's and 2 bottled waters. read more

I dont even know how to rate this place. The food is good, good price. You will see a lot of locals here. I've been to Rincon several times and this place was our favorite till last time. It has nothing to do with food. The last time we saw a bunch of kittens, who were very scared to come up to you even if you offer them fish. I understand it's a problem for any kind of restaurant. But after dinner we had to vacuum our rental car as we were turning it in the next day (there is a car clean kinda behind the restaurant). So we turned behind the restaurant and we saw a guy from the restaurant (I don't know if he is an owner or a manager) was shooting at the kittens with a paint ball gun. :(( I was really disappointed, as there is an adoption center in town. We were in Rincon, having drinks at a nearby hotel. After a few drinks we wanted some authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. Through Yelp we found Tropical Gourmet. The food here is freakin awesome! Very authentic and soooo delicious. I had the seafood stew and it was very tasty. I also had several of their empanadas, including the conch and shark and they were excellent. First of all, if you know what puertorrican food tastes like, this restaurant has very little of it. This is coming from a person who has lived all of his life in Puerto Rico and knows the quality and taste of true seasoned puertorrican food, also known as "comida criolla". The mofongo is just smashed plantains whith no flavor, the meat is not fresh and the seafood does not taste like true quality. On top of it all, the food is overpriced. It's a tourist trap. For very little quantity and quality you are charge $8-$20 for things that are actually $3-$5 for what they are serving. I went with a group, and we ordered the food be served in disposable plates so that we could eat before the beautiful sunset of Rincón went down. They served us the mofongo on top of the outer plastic cup! It was smashed and outside the container. Plus, the service is really slow, that's why we had to order the food to go. My friend ordered mofongo with lobster and it cost him $24. The worst flavor of lobster you can find. He should have payed $5 max for the food he was given. I don't recommend this place at all. Waste of money and food. If we hadn't ordered the food to go, we wouldn't have eaten it and left it there without paying. Like I said, it's a tourist trap. read more

We enjoyed our first meal so much we returned for our last night in Rincon. This place was delicious and authentic. The servers were attentive and kind. It's right across the street from the entrance to Villa Cofresi with plenty of parking. The restaurant is nothing fancy but it is open air and there is nothing better to this Boston girl than to sit outside for dinner in February! To start, we ordered some ice cold medallas for us and fresh squeezed jugo de toronja (grapefruit) for the girls and some bolas de mero (fried grouper bites). The grouper bites were excellent dipped in the mayo ketcho- fresh and not overly battered. My husband is Puerto Rican and absolutely loved his mofongo de mariscos. I got the chillo frito (whole fried red snapper- always my favorite PR dish) con tostones and enjoyed it thoroughly- even had plenty to share. Our daughters split a churrasco (skirt steak), tostones and arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans). I don't eat red meat, but everyone who took a bite of the churrasco said it was "like butter" in their mouths. The beans were seasoned perfectly and tostones freshly fried. Of course, we had to finish up with a tres leches cake- which was yummy. Authentic restaurants like this may not have the frills of the more touristy places, but they do have the best food! read more
