I discovered this bakery more than 10 years ago. The first time I tried their pumpkin toast bread, pork floss toast bread, and taro toast bread, it was a memorable experience with these amazing breads. Since their shop opened, I have found similar types of Chinese bread in other shops; however, I have never changed my opinion that this shop offers one of the best Chinese bakeries in the Lower Mainland. I visited this bakery again and tried the chocolate bread this time. It seems to be a new product. It was another amazing one. The chocolate sponge on the outside was very fluffy and soft, and the bread inside was chewy and soft. It seems they might use rice flour or something similar. Anyway, I was amazed by their products again. Their signature items, such as pumpkin bread, taro bread, and pork floss bread, are a must-try. The bread's texture is so soft and chewy, and the fillings are perfectly balanced. Definitely call ahead to reserve the perfect loaf of'sweet' bread. So soft and perfectly 'sweet' ie not so sweet. The pumpkin and taro loaf were my favorites. The peanuts were highly rated but it was ok for my family and I. It is on the sweeter side. Not bad but not my favorite. Note, they are not open on Sunday and Thursday. read more

Ok... this is embarrassing.... but the owner knows me by now...I've only visited 5 times and only 3 was successful. 2 times I've left empty handed. I specifically drive out to Richmond for Bread. I don't say this often. They don't need my review nor advertisement. They have their die hard fans. Their breads, and I mean their base bread is to die for. I can review that loaf now. I bought 3 loaves for myself and to share and today is day 5... I'm finishing the last few slices earlier and it's still soft and fragrant unrefrigerated. I've made HK style "office sandwiches" and kept it in the fridge, and it tasted fantastic and still soft. What sorcery is this? Other notable buns are: tea eggs with preserved vegetable baked bun seaweed egg omelette with white sauce baked bun Peanuts $8 a bag I've tried it because I'm a fan of Arleens tastebuds It is not greasy, excellent crunch that is not crispy. I'm glad I can stop after a handful, that bag can last one person 2 weeks. So considering the price, its not that bad. The Pork Floss Roll with Egg Wrap was okay. The Pirate Bun did not look as good as the picture shown here. It did not have ham and seaweed and the small piece of cucumber was outside of the egg wrap in the bun. The Marinated Egg bun was also not as good as the picture shown. There were only two small slices of egg inside with cucumber and mayo. The two buns were small with minimal ingredients, and they tasted the same as the ones at other places while their prices were higher. They were disappointing. Moreover, when we were looking at the receipt (because the receipt was unclear) and just before we spoke, the server said, "We did not charge you tax." It was odd for her to say that because we did not ask her about tax. She made us look cheap. When we tried to say something, she turned away and made a loud noise. She did not let us speak. With regards to their price and the quality of their products and service, who would go there unless you knew the owners? read more

Our first taste of their offerings. They came from a box of their 'yolk pastries'. A colourful, gift box, and surprise which came our way recently, and contained some wonderful new-to-us taste treats!! With their flaky crusts, and colourful, flavourful centers, these little pastries sure look and taste good. Such a nice treat, and sure appreciated. Now must enjoy without over-indulging! read more

Maple Gastella is located on McKim Way and near Cambie Road in Richmond. It's hidden gem in Admiralty Centre. I always stop by if I need to fix my phone next door. I don't mind to have Chinese buns once in blue moon and this Taiwanese bakery definitely my choice. I like the pork floss, red bean and egg roll buns. It's so fresh, soft and delicious. They also make pineapple pastry, it's good but not great compare with Taiwan champion awarded shop. In addition, they only accept cash. read more

So good. Everything I had was so soft and just a hint of sweetness. Flavors and textures were spot on. Seriously master bakers here with decades of experience. I heard that they have been in business for over 15 years. I think this is one of the relatively few authentic Taiwanese-style bakeries in Lower Mainland. Most asian bakeries swing towards Hong Kong style. Definitely worth the trip if you're in the area. They do quite a lot of special order business (such as for moon cakes), and their retail shelves often sell out before end of day. Call ahead to try to reserve your order. read more

You must try the taro and pork floss bread loaves!! THEY ARE SO GOOD. My friend recommended this place when she heard that I was visiting Vancouver, but the first thing she told me was to make sure and call in to place an order. I'm pretty glad I did that because when I visited, most of the items were gone. I called in the morning to place my order of tar and pork floss bread loaves, and then stopped by to pick them up in the afternoon. The bread is sweet and fluffy, and I honestly think it's one of the best breads I've had in a while (which, I think, is saying a lot since I grew up in the Bay Area, and I am surrounding by lots and lots of Asian foods and bakeries). This place reminds me of good old fashion Taiwanese carbs. I bought pineapple buns here as well as mantou and vegetable buns. All were delicious. The pineapple buns are different from Kam Do's hong kong style in that they are less sweet and the crust not as crispy, but the bun portion fluffier. The vegetable buns are my favourite and I wish I lived in Vancouver so I can eat this all day every day. read more

As a frequented customer of this bakery, I am feeling quite disappointed about an incident that happened during my most recent visit. I was recommended their cheesecake by who I presume to be the store owner, which I decided to purchase out of courtesy. But instead of giving me one of the six fresh cheesecakes I could see in the pastry case, I was given another cake hidden from view, which turned out to be fully burnt and black at the top. Mind you, this was not a basque cheese cake, but a standard soufflé that should be light brown, as the ones in the display case were. It was clear to me that the cake had been a spoiled product. When I questioned the odd color of the cake, I was told it was merely the effect of the glaze. This dishonesty towards a customer was certainly not appreciated. read more

Wish we would have found this place earlier in the day since a lot of their pastries were sold out by mid-afternoon. The buns we did manage to get our hands on were great & fluffy, only wish I could find a good Taiwanese bakery in Seattle as well. It is cash only but so much more reasonably priced than Seattle. The people there actually speak Taiwanese which is always a plus. read more
