This is the place to go for old school HK bakery items that won't break the bank. True to the very faded price list out front, the prices remain reasonable. Counter service, in and out type of place. Displayed in standard bakery style cases are your HK bakery staples, some breads, and Western style baked goods. Place is big enough to fit a comfortable 6-7 people. No muss no fuss. Cash only & nothing to fault service on. They do package in brown paper bags only so i'd recommend bringing an old cake box or the like if you're planning to scoop up more than a few items as the bags do get oily from the butter/oils from the baked goods. Free parking on Hastings and some side streets. Food wise- only tried their pineapple bun & egg tart. It's $1 each, no tax. Both tastes fine. No major faults. Hope the pricing remains the same. This is probably one of the last few old school Chinese bakery to have low or affordable prices for their buns. $1 egg tart and $1.50 bun. It's so rare to see these prices now. I bought a loaf of white bread and they are made without preservatives. Quite soft. Great for spreads. It needs to be eaten within a few days before mold will grow on it. So best to freeze or keep in fridge if you can't finish it fast enough. I also got the curry beef bun and bbq pork bun. They were ok. I'll say the draw of this place is the pricing. Was curious about this long time bakery on Hastings so I decided to make a stop here for some goods. Was surprised to find that their prices are very cheap and they have a wide variety of goods ranging from Asian specifically Hong Kong baked goods as well as pies and and cookies. We ordered the egg tart ($0.80), pineapple coconut bun ($1.25), coconut bun ($1.25), jelly donut ($0.80), curry bun ($1.25), hot dog bun ($1.25), BBQ pork bun ($1.25), and butterfly ($1.60). As you see from the prices, the baked goods are very reasonably priced especially for today's prices. As for the taste, it can be a hit or miss. I would recommend the pineapple coconut bun because it tasted just like how they made it in the olden days. Really sweet coconuty insides and crispy not too sweet top. The bun is nice and fluffy. Not too much substance but worth for the price. I would also recommend the hotdog bun. Very generous with a whole hot dog and it's perfect for a snack or as breakfast. Would go perfect with a milk tea on the side. This place is definitely worth checking out as the prices are so cheap. I wouldn't go out of my to buy their goods but if I was in the neighbourhood I would definitely pick up a sausage bun and a coconut bun. read more

Cheap and Tasty! This simple bakery has some of the best pinapple buns in the city in my humble opinion. They also have really decent jelly donuts. 3 for $1.60 too! This bakery is very unassuming, when you walk past they have a handwritten poster with the specials. Believe me, go inside you'll be happy for it. I've been going here for a long time, it's in my neighbourhood but for some reason I never thought of doing a review until now! Good selection of assorted cookies, Curry buns, hot dog in a bun, bread, tarts, jelly donuts, Danishes, etc. It's so affordable here, even if you have only a twoonie in your pocket, you can get a few items. During Thanksgiving & Christmas they always have pumpkin pie. This beats out the other store bought pumpkin pies in my opinion. What a great bakery. They have a decent selection of Chinese baked goods (BBQ pork buns, red bean buns, chicken curry pastries, coconut pastries, those things that look like dinner rolls with hot dogs baked into them, etc). They also have a great selection of Western (i.e. non-Chinese) bakery items, including an assortment of cookies, cakes, pies, and a variety of fresh bread. Today I saw an item I hadn't seen last time I was here: chocolate-covered peanut butter cookies. In my experience everything here tastes good. And wow the prices are low. Most of the Chinese items are 3 for $1.50. Some of the cookies are 30 cents each. Today I got two BBQ pork buns, a red bean bun and a large almond cookie for $2.10 incl tax. Last time I got a whole cherry pie for less than ten dollars. Yeah it looks a little run down on the inside. But back in the day, when I was a kid, this is what bakeries looked like. As long as the prices are low and the quality is high, who cares? I'm not here for the ambiance; I'm here for delicious old school snack foods and cookies. read more

I've passed by this long time bakery many times because of the papered up window. It looked like it was going out of business. A family member told me about Hong Hong's egg tart. I finally tried it and I was amazed how good it tasted. They're smaller than most but the price was 2 for $1.20. It was warm and the crust was flaky and light. It's similar to egg tarts you find at dim sum. I'm going to go back and try their other baked goods and get more egg tarts. They do sell out quickly I was told. Cash only. read more

Found this gem when we were talking back from Sushi Nanaimo. This place looked like it was out of business but it definitely wasn't. I ended up only picking up two Wintermelon pastries, but my friend got a bit more Chinese bread/pastries than I did. There were also cookies, brownies, tarts, pies, and a lot of other things you wouldn't think would be at a Chinese bakery! I definitely have to go back and get some more. I think my mom picked up some wintermelon pastries for me! She thought this place closed down ages ago. I go to this place when I'm craving something sweet or when I think my wife deserves to come home to some of those weiner cheesy bun things that she loves so much (they cost $1.20 for 3 of them!!!!).. This place has read my mind! They sold $1 for 3 mini buns before and today I walked in they are selling $1 for a 'normal size' bun and they are on par with the ones from Pine House across the street. They have the curry beef BBQ pine apple crust and egg tarts 65 cents. Not bad at all!! read more

I have been in this area for most of my life and this is probably the second time I ever walked through it's doors. I mean they have been in business for 20 years, there gotta be a reason why! I walked by here pretty much everyday after high school (at least the days I didn't skips), and today I realized that they actually got rid of the silly looking crocodile pastry in the front window! Looks cool, but after many years of seeing that, you start to wonder...... This hole in the wall bakery is quite small and not much of a looker, but it got food and I'm hungry! Their selections of baked goods were ok and not vast like some bakeries. They have a lot of sugar cookies gearing up for the Easter weekend though. Curry bun, coconut bun, pineapple bun, BBQ pork bun, just to make a few of what they offer. Pretty much the typical staple Chinese bakery just no cakes. Everything was buy 3 for $1.50??? Mix and match for a little tasting of all I can get!!!! I ended up with about 9 pastries for 3.50 no tax!! Lol. That's a cheap meal for the day..... though, I didn't want it anymore after sampling a couple. I guess in some cases you do get what you pay for. The in the BBQ pork and curry beef bun were really cheap, like a teaspoon for a medium sized bun... pretty decieving :( Eggtarts were meh, and probably the most decent thing were coconut buns. Maybe all the good stuff were sold earlier in the day cause I'm not getting a burning desire to return to this bakery in the near future. Loving this little bakery. I haven't tried many things because I am so enjoying the apple strudel that I insist on getting it every time. $1.40 for a fresh apple pastry! I didn't even like apple strudel before this. I've also had the portuguese buns (6 for $1.50), which don't look exactly like other portuguese buns I have bought before, but really fresh and enjoyable for sandwiches. 4 starring this, but let's be real: it's four stars for the apple strudel and portuguese buns. Went on a five-day hunt for a single Nanaimo Bar -became convinced there were none in Hastings-Sunrise when someone referred me to this place. Non-descript, sad-looking, but oh my! While not a massive selection, the widest of Western baked goods (bars, brownies, cake slices, cookies) I've found in the area. $1.10-$1.50 each, cash only.
