Sooo yum! We grabbed a few things from here to go - a bit hit and miss, but the delicious things were soooo delicious I'm already dreaming of going back. The treats: The apple fritter was so good! And the almond croissant, light and flaky and full of almond flavor. We also had a raspberry filled donut, which reminded me so strongly of childhood and kid birthday parties - such a lovely fun nostalgic treat! The cronut, upon first bite, was one of the most delicious sweet snacks I've had in a long time - ours was underbaked with raw dough in the center, which was a bit of a bummer, but the parts that were cooked were phenomenal, and I can totally see the hype. The eclair - this I would definitely pass on. Maybe not a popular item? It tasted pretty stale, with weirdly bitter icing and stale dough. But everything else was so good, we didn't mind a few misses. On my way to go biking I've seen this unassuming place and decided "this is the time!" and pull in really quick. Looks are definitely deceiving because this neighborhood bakery is absolutely fantastic. The shop is pleasantly bare-bones with just a few racks of bread, pre-packaged pastry, and cake slices. The fresh case had a lot around 8am and there were a few large bread orders waiting to be picked up. I was curious about what was what and prices (there aren't any posted) but the person helping me out was amazingly helpful and friendly with all my questions. The baked goods themselves are top-notch, if a little one-note. Donuts, fritters, "croissants", danishes, etc. Most of the doughs seem to be made from the same base and covered in either a (very) sweet glaze or caramel. The donuts and "fried croissants" were insanely light and flakey. Like my perfect donut texture. That glaze, though, is insanely sweet. I had to knock some off. The fritter was solid but I wish where where actual pieces of apple. Each thing was less than $2 so I have to say, for the money, this long-standing bakery is more than worth a stop if you're in the area or looking to pick up an order for a group. Randomly stumbled across this bakery and let me tell ya, I'm so glad I did. Stopped in Saturday morning for a variety of donuts. I immediately saw the Cronut and knew I had to get it. Let me tell you... a must get! It was so fresh, soft, melt in your mouth, eat in the car goodness. I shared this with my nieces and I'm sad I did, but I'll be back.we also got an old fashioned, Carmel roll with pecans, long John, donut holes, and cinnamon roll sign frosting. Everything was so yummy and fresh. Also enjoyed a loaf of bread... so fresh. The service was excellent. Everyone was helpful and patient. The bakery is a hidden little gem. I love Maplewood bakery, it's very nostalgic when you walk in the doors. The Only bakery I'll eat from at this point. This old world bakery is not like what you are most likely used to, bc this is quality. The donuts have a density to them, none of that light airy crap. I'd tell you my favorites, but then too many ppl will want them! lol Don't listen to that bad reviews, I've literally been coming here for over 30 years. My mom has been going to Maplewood bakery since the 70s. This was a place my grandparents loved as well. There is nothing better than a made from scratch pastry/donut from a recipe from our prior generations. The owner Mike is a very hard working man that has kept this place running with quality products for over 20 years. I pray this place will always have an owner like him running it to keep the customers getting highly quality delicious baked goods. I've never been in this part of Maplewood. This is the type of bakery boomers grew up with. They have such a variety of everything. I spent $19 and they are not a rip off. The standout dessert is the Napoleon. Huge, so creamy and tasty. The cream is more of a pudding and plenty of filling. There are 3 sections and you'll find something in each one. I'm anxious to try the pumpernickel bread with onion. I sampled a date bar, brownie, and a donut hole. I managed to stop there, but it wasn't easy. I have a blueberry muffin for breakfast tomorrow. Wow, this place is fantastic and found it after class. This place is weirdly placed next door to a liquor store. But, they have some of the greatest variety of cakes, pies, and donuts. I usually go for their angel food cake. However, I did try their donut from a friend which was still moist when I tried with my wife at the end of the day. For valentine's day, I got a medium sized cake for $9 which was nicely decorated. It was marble which was a mix swirl of chocolate in vanilla. My spouse stopped in and brought home some things to try. We were really disappointed with everything purchased. The donuts tasted like the grease they're fried in and the chocolate icing/ganache didn't taste right. It almost had a funky flavor, not nice and fudgy like it should be. The date cookies were not good either. They had no flavor and tasted like they were missing sugar, vanilla, etc. Plus they use shortening, not butter, and you can tell the difference. The bread was ok but nothing to rave about. I really wish I understood why people say their goods are so delicious because nothing we tried was noteworthy. We won't be going back. read more

For One this is the best place to get donuts in the twin cities, and here is why, even if they are 2 or 3 days old they still taste great. They are just great. I have had donuts from all over, and they are my number one place to get them. Brian's review is 5 years old, I do not remember not being tables by the window. Maybe he did not notice the two tables there. Brian I disagree totally the donuts are actually one of the best. And also if they brag about all of them hello and wake up they are good. I have tried many places and none came close to my local bakery in Maplewood. It is okay he did not see the place as special but I do. We all have out expectation. Love it here. Accidentally found ourselves here and think it must have been serendipity. Old school donut shop with super tasty treats and breads. Is it the nicest? Is it the Shiniest? Is it the Newest donut / pastry shop in the cities? NO! However, is it worth the drive in to get tasty treats that are made with love? YES! Although, I was struggle upon arrival....the bakery shares an entrance with a beer store and the sign beer to the right, no beer to the left, almost made me walk right! The bread, the brownies, the sandwich buns, the cakes and pastries are all excellent. My husband loves maple frosted pastries. If the maple pastries are sold out, the sales associate will gladly take something from the case and have it maple frosted. You don't get that kind of service from a "chain" bakery. I was a little disappointed as I drove up to this bakery to check out their donuts. It looks dumpy from the outside and is connected to a liquor store. I was further disappointed when I looked in the window and saw no tables or chairs. My daughter and I went in anyway. When I asked one of the ladies behind the the counter if they had a particularly special donut or one that was more popular than others, she just sort of shrugged her shoulders and muttered, "people just buy everything." So I was disappointed further with that conversation. They have some filled donuts that are filled by simply slicing them in the middle putting in filling and putting it back together. I think this is probably a good way to do it, and it let's them put more filling in. My daughter ordered a custard bismarck type thing, and she said it was fine. (she isn't the best food reviewer). I ordered a long john type thing filled with vanilla cream with chocolate frosting and a folded type thing filled with cherry. The folded thing was unremarkable, I wish I didn't order it. The long john was excellent and I was glad I ordered it. Since they claim no specialty, I'm going to declare their vanilla cream filled long john with chocolate frosting their signature donut. I could go for another right now. I didn't think this place was anything special. But at about 8:30 on a saturday morning there was a rather steady stream of people coming and going.
