Hidden Gem! Admittedly, I often drive on American Blvd and don't often look around, and have missed this bakery for years! I spotted it today and did a U-turn to check it out after noticing quite a few cars in their lot! Even before 9AM, I could tell they had sold a ton of their inventory! I am a donut "purist" - so I figured I would try their glazed donut! AMAZING! I have been to most of the donut shops that get strong reviews in the Twin Cities, and Denny's belongs on the lists! Unfortunately this first try experience was met with a major disappointment. I ordered a half sheet cake for my son's 30th birthday party today and when I arrived at home with the cake my wife informed me that the message decorating the cake was done in pink. One, I am color blind and didn't realize while at the store but Two and what seems to be common knowledge to me and many is that the color pink is considered more associated with being feminine rather than for a son's birthday cake. I'm sure we'll survive but this seems to have been careless on the part of the persons involved with making this an exceptional experience for my son and myself. BTW. I attempted to call and let them know of my displeasure but their phone was no longer giving me the option to speak to a live person as it was earlier today when I called to confirm that the cake was ready for pick up. read more

I had a cherry fritter, along with two old fashioned donuts, chocolate & blueberry. The cherry fritter was flavorless. The fritter was colored red, but had zero cherry taste. The outside wasn't crispy either. The chocolate old fashioned was crisp on the outside, and soft in the middle. The chocolate flavoring was fair. The blueberry old fashioned was incredibly dry. I love this bakery. It has amazing tasting donuts, cookies, cakes and other pastries. They have the cutest decorated mini two tier cakes decorated for the season. The donuts are made fresh in house. We love the elephant ears. Staff are friendly and helpful. They also make beautiful custom cakes. This is the best option to check out by the mall of America if you are visiting. Great locally owned small business that's been in the same family for over 50 years. This place has the best chocolate icing on donuts - it's a rich chocolate, with a lot of cocoa in it. So many donut places (including one about a mile away) use some fake chocolate icing that's artificially flavored, without cocoa in it. The batter/dough they use for their donuts is really good. Donuts & pastries are always fresh. Their fritters have a great cinnamon taste to them. They don't include apples in their fritters - they'd be even better if they did - but the rich cinnamon flavor makes them quite good. They're open only until 2 pm (Tu-Sa) so get there early. I'm sure there isn't much business later in the afternoon, so it make sense. Quick friendly service. Very nice customer seating area. Immaculate business. I love their "old fashioned" donuts. Really good flavor; denser (as they should be). But their raised donuts are really good too, as are their cake donuts! Danishes are great as well. I was nearby and craving a bakery fresh Danish. I selected an almond Danish that looked great, fresh, and crispy. When I took a bite, I noticed that there was no butter flavor, which for me, is a deal-breaker when it comes to Danish. It just wasn't as tasty and crispy as it should be with no additional taste of almond flavoring. I won't return. read more

This little gem in industrial Bloomington is hidden on an awkward side street and for the longest time I thought it sold second hand baked goods. Let me assure you: it doesn't. It DOES sell homemade bread and baked goods of all varieties and is a much larger space than most mom and pop bakeries I've seen including a few tables and complimentary (or at least leftover from a past customer) newspapers. I picked up a dozen assorted doughnuts for coworkers last week and they were gone quickly. They were delicious (at least the one I snagged before the entire box was consumed was good!). This place is definitely off the beaten path, but it's easy to get to and worth the trip! First, on your way in grab a loaf of the cinnamon swirl bread. I could eat the entre round loaf plain, but toasted or as French toast is glorious! As you pass by the breads, cakes, cupcakes and brownies, you will hit the raised donuts, cake donuts, filled donuts and pastries. Make your choice because they are all good, and at those prices you will probably get more than one. And on Saturdays, you get your coffee free to go with your treat. There are a lot A baked goods to choose from some fancy and some extremely basic I settled on a fancy salted caramel cupcake and I think it was called a pecan roll (it's like a cinnamon roll but no cinnamon - just a heavenly maple like glaze on top of the roll and then sprinkled with pecans ) oh my goodness, that roll - it was so good. We had a custom cake made here for our son's birthday, and couldn't have had a better experience. Everything was great: --it was delicious!! We got a marble cake with buttercream frosting and raspberry filling. It was a nominal extra $10 to get the filling and TOTALLY worth it. --everyone was really attentive and helpful. They were so careful to understand our needs and the cake came out even better than we expected. --and he price just can't be beat! For a full, custom sheet cake we paid just over $100-that's a STEAL. We snuck some doughnuts and coffee while we were waiting to pick it up and they were delicious. I consider myself something of a Donut Aficionado, and Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery is on par with the Finest Bakeries in the Land - including my neighborhood haunt, Sarah Jane's Bakery in Nordeast. While I am generally lukewarm to the maple / bacon donut craze, Denny's 5th brought the noise with their version of this donut. The dough had a delectable crispiness to it, and the maple and bacon flavors were merged in Perfect Unity...neither one overpowering the other. Cuz Denny you make me feeeeel liiiike, I just walked into heavvvvennnn. For too looooong. For too loooooong! Literally my eyes welled up in when I stepped in here because I thought I died and went into heaven. I have never been in a bakery like this, and I felt so happy and overwhelmed my the smells and sights! I was greeted by hot cross buns and loaves. There were dozens of coffee cakes winking at me to the left - I don't know how I resisted because they're only $6! I came for the donuts though, and eventually made my way over after ogling the pies, cakes, and cookies. Their donut selection is massive and unique. Croughnuts, bear claws, blueberry old fashioned and fritter, cherry fritter..quite a few you won't find in any shop. They also carry the classics like sour cream, cake, and raised. I chose a croughnut and cherry fritter, and gingerly made my way to the register past the pastries hollering at me (next time boo). The goodies were so fresh, light, and tasty. Fifth Ave Cakes is sort of off to the side of Denny's, and they are the division in charge of wedding cakes. I ran into this business at a wedding expo and am so glad I did. They were very nice and helpful and far more reasonable than other cake makers in the area. I wanted to have a small cake to place on the top of a cupcake stand. Other companies charge $3.50/cupcake and Denny's is only $1 for a plain one or $1.30 for a fancy one. I came in shortly before the wedding to discuss what I wanted. I didn't have a super specific vision in mind so I just gave an idea along with our colors and it turned out beautifully. They also delivered at a pretty long distance for their regular fee. There was a small snafu where they didn't have their normal stand available, but they found a different one that I think was much prettier anyway. In the end, the total cost was $250 for a beautiful 6" cake and 90 cupcakes, delivered and set up. I was thrilled to arrive at my wedding and to see my cake and cupcakes all set up. The cake was delicious and the cupcakes disappeared very quickly. I can't recommend this place enough for brides and grooms that want yummy desserts but can't pay the "wedding tax" that most businesses add on. read more

I would leave no stars if I could. We went to Denny's to order doughnuts for our 6 year old's b'day party. The person taking our order understood these doughnuts were our "cake". She took our order on a post-it note, but assured us not to worry at the lack of professionalism because she was the manager and filled out all the orders. She took all our details AND OUR MONEY. We show up on the day of the party. NO DOUGHNUTS. They don't have our order and they have sold out for the day. They didn't even care. They were so rude. This is a Bloomington hidden gem. I have a pregnant chick in my household and you know what that means - as the man who put her in that state, I'm contractually obligated to oblige her needs and cravings. Baked goods are high on the list of preggo must-haves. We've been on a doughnut kick. So we checked out Denny's this past weekend. I don't know who Denny is, but he's doing it all right. They open at 5am every day (except Sundays, when they are closed). We were there a little before 9 and the atmosphere in the place is awesome. They have a few hightop tables that were all filled by cute old couples or cute young families. Make no mistake - this is a full-on bakery. Cookies, bread, cakes, and they have an EXCELLENT selection of doughnuts. I had a maple longjohn with a big fat strip of bacon on it. Have you ever had one of those? I honestly don't know if food has ever aroused me before. But eating that bacon maple goodness was like this dream I had where Kate Beckinsale and Katy Perry were doing this thing - well, you get the picture. The gals behind the counter were super friendly and personable. One was grilling me about my tattoos and the other and I exchanged witty banter for a minute. I'll definitely be back. I visited here twice now. It's very bright and cheery inside, with a few tables placed next to large window that catch the morning sun. The place looked new, so I asked how long they've been around and they said, since 1969, but that they remodeled in the last couple of months. I was a bit surprised since I grew up in Bloomington, but hadn't heard of them before. At any rate, on to what matters most... They have a wide variety of baked goods and sweets, including a good assortment of fried delicacies. Over my two trips, I sampled: Apple fritter: 4 stars; good cinnamon and bits of apple, not too greasy; a little smaller than some, but that's okay. Sometimes others' AF's are so large you feel like you are tucking into a downed mastadon and you take an involuntary 3 hour nap afterward just to digest it. Blueberry fritter: 2 stars; seemed flavored w/ blueberry syrup; greasy Glazed doughnut: 3 stars; solid, but not great. Not as melt in your mouth as I like Cherry filled glazed: 4 stars; tart cherries in the filling gave it a little something extra Glazed cronut: 5+ stars; bears further elaboration...... I've never consumed a "cronut" (apparently the love child offspring between a donut and croissant) before. I've heard of them and was intrigued when I saw they offered two varieties here--plain frosted and raspberry. I ordered one and had a couple bites and found it quite good--the buttery layers of light croissant like dough perfectly complementing the frosting glaze. I bagged up the remainder and took it home. Later that day--as if guided by divine intervention--I recalled a recent trip to a doughnut shop in Chicago. Inside, they had a microwave and posted on the door of the microwave was a note that read "7 seconds to heaven." I decided to give this a shot on my cronut remnant and for the love of all that is sacred and holy, it was one of the best things I've ever consumed--the slightly warmed/melted layers collapsing and melding w/ the frosting. Hot damn! I shared this microwave tip w/ my daughter when I bought one for her to try later. After she tried it, she texted "Is it extreme to think that there should be a religious following devoted to microwaved cronuts?" I think that's something I could get behind. At any rate, since I've not had cronuts before I can't say whether these were the best on the planet. All I can say is you won't be disappointed. One final thought for you--this also from my daughter--who observed "Is there anything in the world that has a higher happiness to cost ratio than a donut?" An old fashioned cake donut thread brought me to this place. Ironically that was the item I liked the least here, too firm, taste just ok. Everything else great. The layout is cool, you walk right in and there are the bread items. I almost forgot I needed it. I picked up a wild rice. It has a weird under taste, warning. A generously frosted raspberry dessert bread on the other side. 4 moist cupcakes, and generously frosted as well. Kolaches in raspberry and apricot, although not as sizable as others I've had were light and delicious. I like this easy to get to, yet out of the way location. A standalone building with plenty of parking, and a nice view. Service is excellent and helpful. They have free pens and pads with the logo. read more

I really wanted to like this bakery. I live in Richfield, so this is the most convenient local bakery to me, and I always shop local when I can. However, I have tried it a few times, and have yet to find something that makes me say "this place is amazing." We have tried their breads, which are probably the best of the items we have tried there. I am always on the search for good cardamom bread, and this place makes it (although it is always out when I go- high demand), and it is pretty good. However, donuts, cookies, and pastries here are just so-so. I love a good cream cheese danish, and I have to say, if I was grading this place on that item alone, it would be a one, maybe two star place. Honestly awful. The "cream cheese" is a pudding-like texture, with no taste of cream cheese at all, whatsoever. I have had better danishes from Target bakery, to be honest. The donuts are, again, just okay. Nothing spectacular, and nothing I couldn't get just from a big-store bakery. Same with the cookies and pastries. You know that taste of a day-old mass-produced cookie?
