I've been to this grocery store several times now, since it's the closest grocery store to Steven's Trail. Grocery selection is okay but not great. Prices are reasonable but not great. But the deli sandwiches are a steal compared to sandwich shops. I've been in for a few sandwiches now, and I feel like they mostly really hook it up. One girl gave me attitude when I asked for extra tomatoes, but that's fine, I've run into this issue before lol-- I'll just start specifying how many slices of tomato I want. "Can I have eight slices of tomato? Three more. Two more. One more." (I'm not sure why my love of tomatoes seems to irritate certain sandwich makers so much.) Anyway, for $11.99, I end up with the same size and quality sandwich that I would pay nearly $20 for at a stand alone sandwich spot. Since it's a grocery store, of course they use Boars Head deli meats, and always keep the produce super fresh. Sandwich score is like 9/10, not the best sandwich of my life but I would still highly recommend if you're hungry in the area. Ooof. Interesting how most of these great reviews r many YEARS old. Used to b great place. No more. Fact is, ive been here and patronizing this place for decades and this place now charges CRAZY hi prices. Bought OUTDATED chorizo once and ive heard same bad experiences from other locals regarding meat being funky. Staff turnover is BIG sadly. I wont patronize this place anymore. Smells FUNKY when u walk in the door. NEVER seen anyone cleaning/mopping. Im DONE with this place. read more

Don't usually shop there, due to prices and selection. But, it happens. Last two times I did, they've got prices mislabeled. Both times, mislabeled to appear cheaper than they were. Cute little local market in Colfax. They carry everything. Love the deli! The beer cold room is off the charts cool for such a small supermarket. I was pretty impressed with the prices. First off the staff are great people absolutely no problem there. Unfortunately mar val is where things go to become 2-4x more expensive. They gauge because they know it's inconvenient for locals to drive 30 minutes to normal grocery stores. This is wrong on so many levels, shocks me the locals here on a budget can even afford basics. I only shop here for small items and just paid 2.5x normal price of organic eggs for their basic store brand dozen. I'd like to recognize the management and store team at Mar-Val in Colfax, California. Before it was MarVal it was Sierra Market and at Sierra Market the prices were ridiculously high and the quality/selection was low but it was all we had. The best thing that ever happened to us is when MarVal took over because they offer quality and quantity. Over time they have transformed our only grocery store. The bakery, meat department, deli and produce departments have all been "transformed" and, most importantly, now they offer items we used to have to go down the hill to buy. When you shop at MAR-VAL in Colfax you never feel like a customer. They go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. They genuinely care about you...and it shows! read more

We come here every Fourth of July for sandwiches from their deli and watch the nearby fireworks. The staff is so kind and friendly.

Been shopping here for over 20 years. Love the store and employees are helpful. Only thing that's an issue is the prices are higher than most places. I've also bought a package of Mar-Val,'s ground country sausage(that they package in store) that was slimy and 2 days past date. I was disappointed as I had to drive back to the store, which is 6 miles one way to get another one. Kinda sad they don't really have better fried chicken and donuts like they used to, they used to have more of a selection. Also the produce department is much to be desired, I've often had no choice but to buy very ripe, almost unsellable produce. read more

I moved to Colfax in 2017, love this town! I normally shop at Walmart because of the lower prices about every 10 days, along with running errands down the hill. My husband snuck out to buy milk, eggs, and "miracle whip 30 oz jar" at an amazing price of $9.99! Wait, what? I checked Walmart for the same item, $5.29 30 oz jar! Now I am aware of the higher prices here, so I only shop here when I absolutely need to, but WOW! called James to check the price thinking it's got to be a mistake? But "nope" he verified the price, and was very nice to say "just bring it back with your reciept"! I will, normally I would just caulk it up, but "nope again" it's the point of price gouging that I'm going to make a stand for in my pantry!! Whew!!! read more

They carry the best produce and have all the essentials. I can easily do all of my grocery shopping here. I love bringing my kids here as they go out of their way to welcome them. We are so grateful to have this little gem of a grocery store in Colfax. Mar-Val's Sierra Market consistently carries the basics we need, yummy deli selections, bakery and specialty goods including a nice selection of gift and seasonal items. The meat department is excellent with high quality cuts of beef, pork, poultry and fish. It's nice having a produce department with fresh fruit and vegetables which are often as good or better than other stores in the area. The red grapes, cherries and other seasonal fruits are sweet and tasty. The staff is friendly and efficient while the store has a convenient lay-out to get in and out fast for quick errands. Their prices are competitive and sometimes even better than stores down the hill. We feel its really important to support this local market with our business for it's handy location and welcoming small-town atmosphere. Shout out to the deli section. The young woman helping me was wonderful. I was hoping for an egg salad sandwich but they didn't make any this day, so she offered for me to try the potato salad...which was a deviled potato salad...and was very good, but was in the mood for a sandwich. Decided on tuna salad, and asked her advice on which roll was less bready than the others. See what a pain I am? No problem...I forget the name of the roll she chose (geez, this was just 2 days ago) but it was great. When asked if I wanted mayo, I said that I'd like mustard...but spread in on like it's mayo. She "got" that right away. I even had 3 styles of mustard to choose from. Dijon, please. And finally, as she was making it, she asked if I'd like salt and pepper added to the tuna. WHY YES! I've never been asked that...but we all know that grocery store deli tuna salad probably needs a little more doctoring up, right? Well she sure did...and you know what? This review is in the deli only. I am giving a 4 star overall and a 3.75 star on sando. For $8.50 sando was very large and hearty. There's a lovely selection of different sandwiches and sides provided in the deli in the supermarket. They use Boar's Head products so a little higher end. My wife and I split a couple pieces of fried chicken and decided to go with the flying pig sub on Dutch crunch. ( pictured). The staff was very helpful and really friendly. There was a good amount of people during the lunch rush and they got to us in a very timely manner. You can also customize your sandwich so I would imagine you could create a good one. I had chicken chili Verde meatball sub that looked really good but I did not try. Fact is, it's a small town with a small town feel so was good to get in the slow lane for a change. Jeremy and the Marval team have been willing to suooort our efforts with delicious donations each time we have asked. Through these contributions we have been able to serve a beautiful Thanksgiving Turkey at our school dinner, awesome tri-tip at our Surf and Turf and fresh, colorful salad at our spaghetti dinner. I went to Mar-Val's today to pick up a gallon of milk and some oranges. Last week oranges were 99 cents a pound. Today they were $1.99 per pound. Are you kidding me? I know they were on sale last week and we bought a lot of them. I figured they would be about $1.25 for the regular price. However, was I ever wrong. It is impossible for me to shop there on a regular basis. The prices are so much higher than any other store. I just do not understand why. I was so disappointed. We really wanted some fruit. I just could not justify paying double the proce I paid last week. read more

Needed to purchase groceries for my random vacation so I decided to stop here per recommendation of my airbnb hostess. I was not disappointed by my stop one bit. There was ample parking and I even found shade too! I was able to navigate the market rather easily and found everything I needed on my list despite me being in a small town. The staff was friendly and helpful. I returned here again to purchase more items while on my vacation and also had a pleasant experience again. Recommend this establishment 100%. Called ahead of time before driving a half hour one way to make sure item was in stock. Manager claimed she went and looked at the shelf and they were there. When I arrived, there was not even a spot on the shelf for them. She just did not go look and wasted an hour of my time and my gas. This place was great before Mar-Val bought it out. read more

They always have what I need. Great stock for a small grocery. Friendly checkers and helpful staff too. I've never been disappointed here but then I don't go looking for exotic things like truffles either. Things change, and Sierra Market's sale to the new ownership under Mar-Val is one of them. I've gone to their location in Valley Springs a lot during summer trips. While it's a bit sad to see Sierra Market's ownership retire and sell, I believe they found the best 'old school' grocery family to take over, hence Mardee Kidd and Val Kidd, the namesake of the Mar-Val Food Stores. The bakery is the same, and a few new things there too. Their deli and sandwiches are pretty much the same, with some new custom salads like the Edamame bean, corn, black bean & cous-cous cold side salad. Pretty fancy and decently priced compared to a Safeway or Raley's. The meat department is what I've come to expect from a Mar-Val, with high quality cuts and some custom packaged ones, such as their tumble-marinated and vacuumed packed steak cuts. They even have pre-wrapped, ready to go things like pork loin roasts and chicken breasts, no need to wait for a butcher if you're busy. And the produce department is clean, neat, and somewhat charmed with small touches of a personal nature. Nothing was out of place, old, or not fit to sell. Opposite that, a wall of sauces and things that might boggle your mind, like a sun-dried tomato ketchup! Good stuff. They still have a good pharmacy section, which looked like they were upgrading at the time I went. And they still have some of the little things like a great selection of the custom bottled sauces and spices, and even nuts. All in all, consider it the same place to go to find a great selection of local made items as well as expected national brand items. Kudos to Mar-Val for taking the reigns of a locally historic grocery store, and putting your own family touches on it. Just a note, but the negative comments here seem to be incredibly biased opinions, such as calling any potential customer a flatlander or camper. Also, their prices are really competitive for the high quality of products they carry, and EVERYONE will shop around the the lowest price on something. Most people don't understand how and why grocery stores exist in this day. The Mar-Val family did Colfax an incredible good deed by saving one of the last store stops along the way to Truckee, Tahoe and Reno, and they're helping Colfax by bringing in local tax revenue as well. They're even out of the way, so they wouldn't get a lot of drive-by traffic for gamblers or Tahoe-bound people mostly. You would have to go off the beaten path to find them, which is what people who are looking for a good store with good products and prices will do. read more

We visited the little store while visiting family. We were please to see the store fully offering everything one could want. We found a Crane Vineyard wine selling for a few dollars and found it to be a good table wine, so we bought a case. The store is clean smelling and the cashiers friendly. The meat dept smelled fresh and the bakery looked good. I have to thank the store for having somewhat clean restroom. read more

Went in for a sandwich today before the lunch rush and stood around waiting to be helped for almost 10min.The 2 women behind the counter saw me but i guess they had better stuff to do before helping me.
