Super disappointed. An intern student paired with an uninterested physical therapist makes for a horrible experience. As others have noted, the interns/students have absolutely 0 knowledge (not their fault, they are learning) but when the initial assessment is done by a college student who evaluates the wrong side (right shoulder instead of left) and the trained PT sits disinterested, you lose all confidence in the treatment algorithm. Also, appointment started 15 mins late and ended 20 early. Will not be returning. If you are interested in real therapy, not a factory who simply prints out a sheet of generic excersises without any thought, look elsewhere. read more

After 10 years of random Dislocations, (Highlights include: Making Fun of Tony Romo, Kickboxing, Flag football, lifting weights, and sneezing) i decided to get a bankart repair (i highly recommend Dr. Desio at St Vincent's in Worcester). Anyway, about a week post surgery, i started going to see Brett Hutchinson over at marathon, and they took care of me. I can't thank Brett and the rest of the staff and assistants at Marathon enough. My recovery time was very rapid, but not forced. Brett worked with me and my body to make sure that i wasn't moving too fast or slow. He was also very helpful in suggesting non-PT excercies that i could partake in while i was held back due to my injury. I will definitely be returning if i have any PT related needs. read more

I'm working with Brett and Ali. I started therapy thinking I had done permanent damage to my left knee and showed up thinking I needed to get a hands-on diagnosis and some relief. What I discovered is a team that progressively challenged and assessed me and now has brought me back to performing the sports and activities I love to do with no pain or mechanical issues. Brett's analysis and suggested options led me to get my knees and hips x-rayed. That information gave us both a more realistic assessment of my overall condition. My warm-up, exercises and stretches are regularly progressed to ensure I'm improving while not exceeding my limits. Ali's direction and oversight while I do my work has improved my fitness (both mental and physical, as I'm doing work in the studio I didn't think I was capable of doing when I first started therapy.) Everyone here is very supportive, and the overall vibe here is very positive and pro-client. It's a bright, clean and well organized space. Mike T. at Marathon Physical Therapy is excellent. He is very skilled, thorough, professional, and approachable. I've made amazing progress on a shoulder injury that was complicated by the fact that I had a previous injury to the same shoulder. I did not have as skilled a therapist for my previous injury, and that recovery took much, much longer (and was never really properly rehabbed). Mike has been completely supportive of my goals for recovery, which include returning to competitive rowing and lifting heavy boats over my head, which I'm now able to do, thanks to his help. It's a drive for me to get to Marathon Physical Therapy, but it is absolutely worth it. I know from sad experience that not all PTs are equally effective, and getting to one as good as Mike is worth the investment of my time. The entire staff is friendly, dedicated, and professional. I was referred to Marathon by a friend who had a very positive experience there. I had high hopes that I would get excellent care there, especially after seeing all of the positive notes on the wall in the waiting area. Unfortunately, I feel that the care I received here was so sub-par that it was negligent. I came to Marathon seeking help with a back injury. The initial consultation was encouraging. After the first couple of visits, they started having me work exclusively with college students who were doing internships there. While they were all very nice, they clearly were not trained. With little or no direction from an actual physical therapist, these students were supposed to run through all of the exercises I'd been doing at home each week between appointments. They were given a sheet listing which exercises I was supposed to do and how many reps, none of them even knew the exercises! Had I felt like these people were competent enough to evaluate my progress and check my form, and had a trained professional checked in with me each session, I would not have minded. Pairing people with untrained interns is not okay, especially when you are charging them the same amount for every session. I continued going to appointments for as long as my heath insurance would cover it, hoping for some relief. I'm really disappointed that I waisted my time here instead of using my insurance coverage at a place where I would have received expert care consistently. Disappointing. read more

So after eight weeks of visiting twice a week, my ankle was deemed healed! I followed the at home exercises (most of the time) and worked hard during my visits there and I can say I now feel back to my normal capabilities. I now know how to stretch out better, strengthen my muscles on my own, and also that I hate wall squats with the ball. Torturous, but in a positive sort of way. The facilities are really clean within this location, and everyone is really helpful, know what they are doing, and are very knowledgeable. They accepted my insurance (Harvard Pilgrim) and tried to get as many visits as possible. Marathon Physical Therapy played a huge part in my recovery and I'm happy to report that I am participating in the AIDS Walk, and can hit the gym and take long walks like I could before my accident! Definitely call then if you're looking for any sort of rehabilitation if you've had an injury-the service I received at Marathon Physical Therapy was fantastic. read more

I've been here for 2 rounds of treatment for bulging discs in my neck and tight trap muscles. Once last year and once this year. I understand that it will be a lifelong issue due to the condition, however have found relief at Marathon PT. Haley and Emily Bliss have been fantastic with needling and manual treatment. I've also had a fantastic experience with all of the PT assistants. Everyone is so friendly and I look forward to my appointments! The first time I came to PT I could barely move I was in so much pain. Haley recommended needling treatment with a combination of manual (massage) treatment and regular exercises, which has decreased my pain to a very manageable state. read more

I was referred to Marathon Physical Therapy for neck spasms and severe pain. I went to about eight sessions at Marathon Physical Therapy and felt it was a complete waste of time and money. The physical therapy basically consisted on an unenthusiastic young 20-something telling me briefly to do an exercise, and then she would walk away or just start chatting with the other therapists, instead of focusing on making sure I was actually doing the exercise right or seeing how I reacted to the exercises. My therapist frequently complained she was tired, which made me feel uncomfortable, as if I was encumbering her by showing up for my appointment. Overall the 3 therapists I worked with here seem to be working from a cookie-cutter approach, instead of tailoring the therapy to your specific needs and injury, and adjusting exercises accordingly, they literally just read straight from a piece of paper and did very little overseeing of the exercises, let alone helping me make any meaningful correction or adjustments. Only twice did the therapist ever actually massage my neck or take a deeper look at my neck muscles and neck movement/limitations, which I think would've helped her understand that the exercises I was doing were not benefitting me at all and often times were hurting me. The positive reviews here are confusing and surprising to me - perhaps I just wasn't Marathon Physical Therapy's ideal clientele (marathon runners?). My impression from my time here is that this place is a physical therapy mill/cash cow - they get you in and out ASAP and make their money. I felt no genuine interest from my therapist in my (non-existent) progress whatsoever. I would've been better served googling exercises and submitting questions to online message boards. PS - my first consultation appointment here was BY far the most attention and care I received. After the consult, it was a steep slope downwards. Perhaps that's there business model... bait and switch. read more

Misleading and very unhelpful staff at the Newton location that will not take responsibility for misinforming their customers. They incorrectly informed me that they accept my insurance and booked me in for 6 appointments. Only to receive a bill after the 1st visit and when I called them to inquire, I was told they are out of network! Every staff member I spoke to including their billing person refused to take responsibility for misinforming me and insisted that I pay for the service provided. So I ended up paying for the 1st visit "service provided" which was an initial evaluation that was totally useless to me as I had already been evaluated and recommended for PT by my orthopedic doctor read more

I came to Marathon because it is a convenient location. But I was soon surprised by how different Marathon is from the last place I went. At Marathon, my therapist Sophia is with me for at least 30 minutes, working on my hip or shoulder, and I always feel better after my treatment. She also makes sure I am doing my exercises correctly. She is also available by email for questions. An assistant supervises me as I do my exercises. At my last place, I was left alone to do exercises, lie on a heating pad, or get e-stim. Not a lot of interaction or hands-on help. Marathon is totally hands-on. I feel like Marathon is what PT is supposed to be. My husband has also had therapy at Marathon, post-surgery for a broken ankle. His therapist guided him to find the correct compression stocking. And I've recommended Marathon to a friend. I highly recommend Marathon! read more

I am a self-proclaimed hater of physical therapy. I played two sports at a division 1 college and have endured multiple rounds of physical therapy over the years with many physical therapists. Generally, I find PT unhelpful and unnecessary (this may have contributed to my multiple injuries). All of this changed when I came to Marathon; I would give 10 stars if I could. I am extremely sad to say that I no longer have the opportunity to visit Marathon on a bi-weekly basis as my issues have completely subsided (thanks to my wonderful treatment!). I initially came to Marathon for women's health-related issues, and was unsure what to expect. Never have I met such a caring and non-judgmental staff who is also extremely good about getting results. I saw Ruth, who I will recommend to friends, strangers, even foes; she is probably the smartest and hardest-working physical therapist I've ever encountered and approaches her patients with a caring yet forceful demeanor. I credit her with changing my attitude about therapists in general and physical therapy as a whole. I also received treatment for a nebulous hip/quad pain which Ruth was able to treat with a combination of stretching, rest, and dry needling. I qualified for the Boston Marathon and I would not have been able to run if it hadn't been for the staff at Marathon. For the first time in 10 years, I feel like I have the tools to keep myself healthy and injury-free; I can't even begin to describe how much this has changed my overall quality of life. I truly cannot say enough good things about the staff at Marathon Physical Therapy. I have already recommended at least one friend who is now receiving treatment. I have full confidence in any of the physical therapists on staff; they are honest and caring and incredibly intelligent. I never realized how reassuring it could be to trust my injuries to someone else with complete faith that the issues would be solved. Also, this office is great about insurance; I had a few problems and all were handled promptly and without confusion. I've been through courses of physical therapy in the past, one was for my wrist in Tallahassee (recovering from wrist surgery), the other was in Beverly, MA (recovering from wrist fracture). Two weeks ago I went to my doctor with leg pain and she sent me to Marathon Physical Therapy. I've only had 2 appointments so far, but this place is awesome. I have full confidence that I'm going to wind up in better shape than I was even before this new injury. What I really like about Marathon, besides the knowledgeable physical therapists, is that there is a lot of personal attention to your goals, athletes in particular. I run, work out and play sports all the time, so it was really important to me to find a PT that could work with that and help me find ways to keep training and working out despite the injury. I'm currently training for a half marathon, and my PT is optimistic that I'll be able to do it. There are thank you notes from Iron Man competitors and tons of high intensity athletes all over the walls. Where other PTs would say, "rest, don't do anything, ice it and relax," my PT (Laura) is giving me the proper stretches and strengthening exercises to allow me to continue running and training. The only limitations I've been given are that I can't run more than 10 miles before my race. I think that the other PTs I've worked with have possibly been paranoid and overly cautious, which resulted in limited range of motion, extended courses of PT and seriously increased stress levels (exercise is my outlet). I also like that there are a lot of people working there, and the impression that I get is that a lot of the trainers/therapists have different specialties so you can easily link up with whatever type of therapy you need. I understand that they also do massage and various classes. Not sure about details on those, but their website is pretty good so I'm sure you could find info on there. The location is really convenient. It's right in Newton Center off of several main roads and highways. The parking lot does have meters though, so bring quarters. The facility is huge, has tons of equipment, and is very clean and well kept. My only gripe at this point is that they're so busy that making appointments can be difficult. I'm supposed to be going twice a week, and they can't get me in more than once a week until October because my PT is completely booked. Anyways, from now on this is going to be my go to PT. Yep, I know I'm going to wind up needing more PT at some point in the future - I've accepted that I'm an injury-prone walking/running disaster. If you're looking for a good PT, I demand that you go here, just don't take up my appointment times! read more

She has done so much to help relieve the pain, help me to strengthen my pelvic pain and educate me on what it is and how to cope with it. and to teach me that there is life after the injury. Very average first experience. Went here for an initial evaluation with recommendations for exercises having heard that this place was great. The appointment felt rushed and we hardly had time to do physical evaluation after simply reviewing initial questionnaire. Exercises or do's don'ts? Hardly a minute to even ask. I was instructed to schedule another appointment. Appreciate that Marathon is disciplined with appointment start times for next client but c'mon, wouldn't you schedule a decent amount of time for first time client? Another way to set first client appointment expectations is to specifically say how long the appointment will be and what to expect out of it... upfront over the phone. I went there expecting a consultation with an expert and left feeling like livestock. All this said, I'll still give this place a shot (because of reviews and I don't immediately know of another resource) and will update my review up or down based on the actual physical therapy service. read more

I've used many PT offices in the past 20 years, and Marathon is far and away my favorite. The therapy is completely individualized, as opposed to a more standardized, rotbotic approach I've experienced elsewhere. Each day that I go for my appointment, my therapist looks at exactly where I am at that moment, and structures the session accordingly. He listens well, is sensitive to my concerns, and makes modifications to my program based on the feedback I give him. I love that the appointments include a half hour of hands-on manipulation/mobilization/massage before the exercise program. I have experienced good pain relief, much more mobility, and I have a personalized exercise program that works well at home, in the gym and in the PT office. The physical therapists are extremely knowledgeable, well trained, polite and professional. They work with athletes as well as regular folks of all ages and abilities. No ageism or preferential treatment. In addition to the PT services, I have had fabulous massages there. There are 2 massage therapists. I chose the one who was advertised as doing hard core "deep tissue" massage. She helped me tremendously after an injury, and I keep going back for more. She will focus on particular areas at my request, and she also gives great feedback on muscular issues that she uncovers during the massage. Two Thumbs Up! for Marathon PT in Newton, MA! read more

I highly recommend to anyone suffering from pelvic floor pain or women's health issues. I saw Monique several times for massage therapy and she was wonderful. In addition to finding and working out my issues, after each session, she would talk to me about things she noticed and stretches or exercises I could use on my own to help keep the knots away. I've seen many massage therapists and found her to be more thorough in educating me about preventing and treating muscle issues than most. I had an ACL reconstruction surgery on my left knee and required physical therapy. When I tried to make an appointment at Marathon, I was told I would need to wait 2 weeks to begin my therapy. Having spoken with other physical therapists, I know that delaying therapy has a significant negative effect on recovery, specifically regarding the length of the recovery process. Knowing this, Marathon still recommended I wait the additional 2 weeks rather than suggesting I find another therapist, which demonstrates that Marathon has no regard for me or my recovery but simply wants my money. When greed overpowers a therapist's job to assist in a patient's recovery, that is a terrible thing. read more
