It is hard to conceptualize how vast the Grand Canyon is through pictures. Park near the Bright Angel Lodge & Canyon and walk to the Village Route Transfer. You cannot drive out to the points March to November. Take the free red line bus up to the different points. (Hopi and Mohave were most recommended by google on the south rim) The driver said that the Mohave point was her favorite so we got off there. It did not disappoint. Then take the bus back down after sunset (buses run for 1 hour after sunset)

There was some concern because of her recent knee surgery but she did great walking on the trails and through the gift shop, and was impressed at the grandeur of the place, as really anyone should be. Parking here was plentiful and while it was busy, the crowds were very manageable and everyone also was respectful of the grounds during our time there, which was refreshing to see. The paved roads are dog-friendly and we almost seemed left out, not having a four-legged companion with us for the journey. If you have the time, walk along the trails away from the main road so you can put some distance between you and crowds and fully experience this majestic location.

I walked around the village, checking out the art shop and the hotels (and grabbing brunch at El Tovar Hotel). The Geology Museum has more information about the formation of the area, as well as a small gift shop. I made it a bit down Bright Angel Trail, marveling at the views. I also did the 25 mile scenic drive towards the east on Desert View Drive - definitely stop at some pull outs since the views are different as you go along the rim. Things I have to do in the future: -Take the shuttle to Hermit's rest (be sure to sit on the right side since you get all the views that way) since it was wayyy too crowded when I looked at the bus stop -Get a ticket to climb up Desert View's tower. I wish there was more information about the Indigenous peoples and their cultures who lived in this area. There wasn't a lot of information provided, but a lot about the architect who designed a lot of the buildings. It seemed unbalanced. Also, I wish that Desert View went into more history of the building - apparently it was controversial when it was built. Amazing visit.

We visited the south rim this time and headed to the Bright Angel trail, which is the most up-kept trail in the park. We heard a trail guide mention that on his way down. Entry costs $35 per vehicle and the pass is good for a week. Going in the morning will have the shorter line to get in, and in the afternoon the line will get really long. They only take cards now, cash is no longer accepted. There are a ton of lodges, and individual cabins to stay at. There's also restaurants, a food court, and lots of shops all throughout the park. There's even WiFi available at a small fee. This park really has everything. If you've never been, or it's been a while since you're last visit, it is time to plan a trip back!

We brought the whole crew to Grand Canyon National Park. Extended family, different ages, different…read moreexpectations, the usual mix you get when you try to plan something for everyone. You half expect distractions, short attention spans, someone asking when lunch is. Then you reach the rim. And everything goes quiet. It's not dramatic in a loud way. No music, no buildup. Just a slow, almost reluctant reveal as the land opens up and drops away into something that feels less like a view and more like a force. The canyon doesn't present itself all at once. It stretches. It layers. It pulls your eye outward, then farther, then farther still, until distance stops making sense. You start trying to measure it. That ridge over there. That shadow cutting across the rock. Your brain wants to assign scale, but it can't quite land the plane. What looks close is miles away. What seems like a single wall is actually a series of cliffs stacked over geologic time, each one holding a different chapter of the Earth's history. We spent most of our time along the South Rim, moving slowly from viewpoint to viewpoint. And that's the thing. You think you've seen it, then you take fifty steps and it changes. The angle shifts. The light cuts differently. Colors that looked muted suddenly burn through in reds, rust, and deep browns. It's the same canyon, but it never really is. The kids surprised me. I expected ten minutes of interest, maybe a few photos, then boredom. Instead, they leaned into it. Pointing things out, asking questions, noticing details. Birds riding the thermals below us like they had figured something out we hadn't. Trails etched into the rock that looked impossible from where we stood. Even they could feel that this wasn't just another stop. There's a rhythm to the place. Morning light sharpens everything, pulls out the edges and textures. By late afternoon, it softens. Shadows stretch, colors deepen, and the whole canyon feels like it's exhaling. If you stay long enough, you realize you're not just looking at it. You're watching it change in real time. And somewhere in all of that, perspective shifts. Not in a forced, poetic way. Nothing that neat. It's quieter. You're standing in front of something shaped over millions of years by water, gravity, and time working without pause. It makes the usual noise of life feel smaller. Not meaningless, just... smaller, and maybe a little more manageable. Logistically, it's more accessible than you'd expect for a place this vast. Trails, overlooks, shuttle systems. You can explore as much or as little as you want. It doesn't demand that you conquer it. It lets you meet it where you are. There's also a subtle undercurrent you can feel out there. A kind of quiet pride. Not loud, not performative. Just the understanding that this landscape exists here, protected, shared, and still wild in the ways that matter. It feels significant without needing to announce itself. We came as a group, but everyone had their own moment with it. Some stood still for long stretches. Some walked the rim. Some just sat and took it in without saying much. No one rushed. You can call it beautiful. That's true, but it undersells it. It's immense, patient, and indifferent to being understood. It doesn't need your reaction. Five stars feels almost like a formality. But it's the only scale available, so it'll have to do.

The Grand Canyon…read moreis great for those who are little less mobile as it provides a great 23 miles road route with stops to view the rim. Some of the parking lots are quite small so I imagine in peak season these parking lots can be challenging. Plus I imagine the roadways can be busy. As an alternative by the main visitor center there is bus service who take you to some of the key stops along the Grand Canyon. Alternatively you can hike the rim and take the bus back. The bus runs quite frequently. As it was government shutdown time when we visited, we did not get to visit the visitor center but looked nice. We were there late October and still super busy. Beat to go weekdays and early, but 11am people were really streaming in. Park is 35 dollars to enter.

He knew the river and canyon backwards and forwards. He was a great storyteller and a wonderful guide and boatman. The guides, Glade and Hannah, were terrific, like personal chefs there to assure you had a great time and were safe. They aimed at the best part of every rapid- a real E-ticket ride. Some advice: 1. bring more alcohol-it was hot in August, probably 100, we are not big drinkers but 3-4 cold beers a day would sure have been nice, we ran out on day 6 2. wear light colored clothes if the weather is going to be warm 3. bring a walking stick, very helpful on the hikes scrambling over boulders and rocks 4. bring more alcohol 5. a waterproof day pack to have some gear readily accessible on the raft would have been nice 6. Have a set of river shoes, and a set of hiking shoes for shore excursions. My river shoes were great on wet rocks in the river, but tenuous at best when hiking 7. bring more alcohol 8. I balked at the sarong idea and regretted it, sarong would have been great to keep cool on the raft and to provide additional sun protection 9. Gel or spray on deodorant would have been nice, I brought body wash but it did not really cut it. 10. Consider going in May-mid July time frame when river is running clear. Once monsoon season starts in Arizona the river runs silty. Still a great trip.
