3.5 stars New…read moreVietnamese market I had the pleasure of checking out. It had all the main staples, fresh produce, main Asian grocery selection, fresh fish and a butcher shop. There was also a hardware section of household goods, frozen and a big bonus. An open concept restaurant located in the grocery store. It looked as though locals were enjoying a Saturday lunch when I arrived. The smells of wonderful pork bone soup filled the air! Back to the grocery store two blocks away is Kim Phat. So one would think how the hell can they possibly compete with such a Vietnamese powerhouse as KP. It's like the David and Goliath tale. Obviously there's an allure to shopping here as people were coming and going. Parking is to a minimum and there was a guy attending and trying to control parking as I was coming in. Selection was more than adequate for my Asian food needs. Some interesting discoveries: 1) dried mud fish. Not sure how one would cook a dish using. Never tried this before but googled it and it looks like a devilish creature living in a muddy landscape far far away. 2) vegetarian shark fin. As many shark lovers have cried afoul of Chinese and their celebration of shark fin soup. Don't judge me I grew up with real SFS. With the veggie version I'm glad Kei Phat supports this socially conscious move. Pamela Anderson or the PETA individuals would be proud as well. I would definitely return as its a good experience to come and shop then eat lunch or vice versa in the restaurant.

They got things you'd never see at your generic grocery market. I know I'm weird but I love chicken gizzards and It's hard to find it but they've got it all the time ! Reason being I'm frequently at MJT and there are times in which I feel like some char siu, sesame balls, dumplings or that asian ingredient to compliment my dish and I won't have to go all the way to Marche Hawaii or Chinatown. Prices here are your typical asian market. I appreciate that they don't try to hose their own people with expensive overpricing. They have a butcher and meat and fresh seafood section in the back and also quite odd, but not unusual their own jewellery shop as a stand alone enclosed kiosk in the store. It was closed on the day I was there. Picked up some of my regular chicken cabbage dumplings but I shall be back to try some of their other goods and items.

Pre-COVID, they also had a buffet where you can choose your items and an area to sit and eat. They didn't have fermented soybean powder which I needed for a recipe, but I've been able to find all the other Korean ingredients I needed for recipes I've tried. They also have some Japanese and Chinese products, not to mention Thai and Vietnamese (in terms of coconut milk and noodles, I noticed). I found korean vermicelli (yay! $3 for 16oz) and bunch of other noodles, including buckwheat soba ($2-3). Panko (around $3) and nori sheets ($2 for 10) were available for better prices than you'd find in other grocery stores. There were things I couldn't really identify (dried shredded fish, perhaps?) and some asian cooking staples, like mirin, sesame oil and soy sauce. This is the second Korean grocery store I've found in Montreal. The other being on St Catherine W downtown. This one was larger and selection of good was more diverse. A great selection of many if not most items Korean/Japanese and other Asian. They do have a healthy selection of prepared foods. Also on Monday- Saturday there is take out items from a restaurant. I was here on a Sunday so I could do is salivate while looking at the menu and wonder how amazing their dishes must be. Some prepared bulgogi rice was made but I want to come for some of the more exotic Korean items. In the cooler at entrance there is a well stocked selection of prepared Korean food. Spicy chicken, kimchi, tempura fish, chap chae only to name a few. I got some chap chae and it was delicious. Not too sesame oil overpowering but delicious none the less! As you walk to the back there is another cooler fridge of banchan and other curious delights. Good stuff peeps especially if K-Food is one of your weaknesses. Lots of dry goods, also a very strong section of frozen dumplings. I picked up a bag made in NA yet non recognizable with all the Korean writing (which I have no idea) for me. They were delicious by the way. Downstairs is a butcher counter with some short rib, samgypesol-Gui and other deliciously tasty yet somewhat unhealthy Korean meats. The Long Version: I love poking around small grocery stores, especially international grocery stores in search of exotic goods. So when I was walking by Bonjour Supermarket I had to stop in. The store is not too large, but it has a good variety of products. They had items imported from Taiwan, Japan and China. Maybe other countries too, but those are the ones I saw. As luck would have it, while I was there I saw a lady wheeling out a cart of freshly made steamed buns/bao. They were still warm! Even though I was still full from lunch, I couldn't resist getting some. They were $1.50 each and came in quantities of 2, 3, 4 or 6. They had lots of different flavours such as pork and celery, chicken and cabbage, and beef (the beef ones were $2 each). But the only pack of 2 they had were pork and celery, so I grabbed that one. The buns were soft and there was a good amount of meat filling. They were tasty and for $1.50 each they were a great deal. The store accepts cash, debit and credit, but there's a minimum spend for debit and credit, like between $5-$10. So I paid cash. Staff were pleasant. I have been shopping here almost since it opened. Broadest supply of Asian ingredients, daily…read morefresh prepared take-out meals, homemade Bao (steamed buns), best beer prices in the area, and very clean. Since COVID they enforce a strict mask rule for all clients so don't go unless you have a covering for your mouth and nose. The owners are very friendly and their inventory is constantly refreshed. Also buys quality produce. I did almost all my Covid shopping there and still will.
