We had just finished some grocery shopping, and looked nearby for a restaurant for a quick lunch. We noticed Marco and Luca, thinking at first (from its name) that it would be an Italian restaurant. Rather, it was a dumplings restaurant -- cuisine that we do like. Food. (Our rating: 3/5). You order at a counter from a limited menu that's hanging on the wall. Choices included pork dumplings ($5.75) steamed pork buns ($2.50) sesame balls ($4), cold sesame noodles, and a meal plate with rice, chicken, and dumplings ($13). We ordered the first 3 mentioned items. All were freshly prepared after we ordered. The pork dumplings (3/5) were tasty, but we were disappointed that they were seemingly deep-fried, making them quite heavy. The steamed pork dumpling (2/5) was also tasty, but didn't have too much filling. The sesame balls (4/5) were the highlight of our meal. Service. (4/5). The gentleman at the counter was friendly and efficient. Ambiance (3.5/5). The indoor tables were amongst a random, and disjointed, assortment of articles -- including a piano, fences, flowers, and more. On a Monday around noon in Jan, 2024, only two tables were occupied (including ours) but they had a steady stream of customers for take out. Parking was easy and free. We got some take away and it did not disappoint. Steamed dumplings and pork bun were so tender they were gone in no time flat. Chicken curry was spicy enough to slow us down but not so much to cause an issue later, if you know what I mean. We ordered the steamed BBQ pork bread and the fried dumplings. The steamed bread is super similar to Chinese steamed BBQ pork bread which is what I think they were going for and it really hit the spot. The fried dumplings were...underwhelming. They were so tiny and the dough was a bit thick. The filling itself was nice, but I think if they made the dumplings bigger so that there's more filling and the dough is thinner, that would be perfect. The dumpling sauce is really good! It's salty and sweet and slightly spicy. Overall I would recommend checking Marco & Luca Dumplings out if you're missing Chinese steamed bread and dumplings. It'll hit the spot. read more

I took three trips to Charlottesville recently so I had their fried dumplings, the pork bun, some wonton soup and the curry combo over that time and all were great. The last time i was in Cville...i visited the corner store downtown...but because traffic is murder down that way my friend took me to this location. Marco & Luca...is exactly what it says dumplings....fried and served with a soy sauce and chili sauce. Convenience and affordability. If they told you that your paying $8.20 for 6 fried dumplings and a small container of cold sesame noodles or sweet and sour noodles...Perfect snack...filling and not over done. Although I will admit sometimes the dumplings are not as crispy but they still taste really good so that doesn't bother me to much. the sesame noodles do need a bit of something but they were still good. Okay place to grab a quick cheap meal. Marco and Luca is conveniently located on US29 across from Trader Joe's. There's plenty of parking and lots of seating inside. Food is served quickly and the prices are cheap. The menu selection is small and simple. They serve dumplings, pork or veggie buns, cold sesame noodles, and hot and sour noodles. It's not the most authentic Chinese food, but it's satisfying enough. The dumplings are smaller than Got's dumplings, but they give you more for a lower price. It's nice and crispy, but too greasy for my liking. I also didn't like that they poured the soy sauce on the dumplings. I prefer to dip them myself. The cold sesame noodles were not all how they're supposed to be like. The noodles are too thin and too soft and the cucumbers were not diced thinly enough. They should also be served with shredded chicken breast. It's not a bad place to get food. Just don't expect anything authentic. read more

Something interesting here is that this location has a chicken curry that I'll address later in the review. I enjoy the simplicity of the sauces that they use. The dumpling sauce is sweet yet spicy, not too dense and compliments the dumplings well. The porkiness of the dumpling shines through, yet I wish the chive flavor was more pronounced. The peanut noodles here are quite good, shame that they're more expensive than the dumplings themselves and the prices have only increased in the most recent years. The sweet and sour noodles are questionable and you find yourself only ordering them once and then reverting back to your peanut noodle orders. The soup is quite generic but one doesn't come here for the soup. The aforementioned chicken curry was banal and honestly quite uninspired, granted I shouldn't expect much as their main staple of the menu is dumplings and noodles. Something I wish to see in the future is more variety in dumplings and less exploration of food items no one really asks for. Instead of curry and soups, just have dumplings and noodles and do it well. In town from NYC... Saw this next to my hotel and figured, I'd scratch an itch or craving I'm used to handmade, homemade dumplings from Chinatown , these are not. The accompanying sauce had some kick, that I wasn't used to, but might have been good on some cold noodles or stir-fry. It wasn't as thin or gingered, as I'm accustomed to. The dumplings are small. I have been going to Marco & Luca for a WHILE now ever since you could get an order of dumplings for 2.50 or 3 dollars. I would recommend this place to anyone because it's something quick cheap & good. But I do have to say the last time I went in to get my food me and my sister heard a whining and we looked around thinking one of our dogs got out the car but it wasn't, once we go outside I'm guessing she's the owner brought her dog from behind the kitchen and took it outside. I get it, but it's also VERY unsanitary for it to be a dog in the kitchen where you are handling other people's food. This little dumpling spot has to be my all time favorite restaurant I have had the pleasure to experience in Charlottesville. The woman who runs it is extremely friendly and very caring towards each customer, and the food quality matches her positive demeanor and attributes. The fried dumplings are top notch, and the pork bun is simply out of this word. Extremely soft but warm on the inside. The Korean bbq is filling tastes phenomenal, and the curry dumpling and pork bun deal is simply a must for only 12 dollars, you can't beat that price. YUM! Visited their Zan street location. Staff was friendly and attentive. Though seating was not available due to COVID the interior was clean and eclectically decorates. Ordered the hot and sour soup - cold sesame noodles - veggie bun. Noodles were perfection - peanut sauces with a great consistency and the fresh cucumbers with sesame seeds on top was fresh and visually delightful. Hot and sour soup was vegetarian which you can't find everywhere. Tasty and filled with tofu and mushrooms. The sauce for the buns we sweet and sticky- very unique.
