Parking was a bit crazy but I know that's because it was the weekend and the time of year we're in. The main store had what I was looking for and had a couple of small aisles for home decorations. The rest of the store was mostly things riders in a Krewe would buy but they did seem to have a lot. As I was leaving I heard someone else talking about their apparel store next door. We drove here on a Friday for bulk throws as we'd heard they have great selection and variety. So glad we came!! We found various sizes and color of bulk beads. Wow!! After attending the Krewe of Bilge parade in Slidell I had to stop here before leaving LA. They have EVERYTHING Mardi Gras. If you want to decorate your party, home, car, RV, classroom, office or especially your float THIS IS THE PLACE. They have so many fun items from large to small, specialty beads (peace signs, flags, pirates, rainbow colors, high heels, xrated, shamrocks, beachy, etc.) There are bulk bags so everyone can dress a theme or have beads to throw. Beads and bling, it's a Mardi Gras thing We literally arrived here with just a little over five minutes to look around before they closed for the day. The staff was nice enough to allow us to shop and buy our souvenirs. I didn't get a chance to check out the whole store given the only time we had but I was excited to see all the Mardi Gras souvenir items sold here from clothing to unique masks to boas and leg warmers (I've seen girls wear these on Bourbon Street) and, of course, all the different types of throw beads in every color imaginable. They are priced cheaper than the souvenir shops at the French Quarter. They sell wholesale to the public and the prices were reasonable. You can purchase by the case too. And not just Mardi Gras supplies... they also stock novelty items for holidays such as St. Patty's Day, 4th of July, Easter, weddings, children's parties, etc. Items can be purchased on-line from their website. We see the store off highway 10 freeway in Slidell every time we drive to/from New Orleans to the Gulf Coast so it made it an easy and convenient stop for us. What a great place for all of your Mardi Gras needs! On the south side of I-10 between the Old Town exit and the Fremeaux exits in Slidell, you can see it off to the side with its brightly colored paint job. This is away from New Orleans proper, but they do have locations in New Orleans. I have not been to the other locations as of yet. There is plenty of parking. Inside, you can buy items individually or in bulk. They do give discounts for buying in bulk, which makes sense. And, they do not specifically cater to any individual krewe, which is cool. There are a wide variety of throws here, to include toys. My only issue is the only lanyards they offered for sale, individually or in bulk, had WWJD imprinted on them. Which I would not want for myself anyway, but next to beads that no children should wear (naughty, naughty, naughty), it just seemed odd. They are open to the public, which is not the same for other, similar stores. The day I came, their credit card machine was down due to a software update, and I had no cash on me. The story; I needed to get Mardi Gras beads to send to my military family in Japan. Although my daughter in law and granddaughter have never experienced a Mardi Gras season, I keep trying to tempt them. So I needed some great beads at a good price. I found exactly what I was looking for at Mardi Gras imports as well as some surprises that I was delighted with. Upon entering, you're overwhelmed with purple green and gold. It's like the world exploded those colors. But the shelves are neatly done and the layout encourages you to walk around. The classic striped Mardi Gras shirts (in every size) was the first thing I purchased. The store had a huge selection of decorations that you could use for home or krewe table at a Mardi Gras ball. But I zeroed in on the long specialty beads...you know... the ones you would have to flash body parts for. I was impressed with the selection representing Mardi Gras, Irish Parade, Saints, LSU and other more risqué designs. Buying beads can be expensive, but Mardi Gras imports had great value bags filled with everything from long beads, toys and stuffed animals. If I were riding in a parade, I would definitely invest in several of their specials. Finishing up my trip, I noticed some fun rings by the register as well as pat O'Brian's Hurricaine Mix to add to my CARE package. I'm almost glad I didn't see this last surprise until I had already checked out - a WALL of beautiful masks in all price ranges on the front section of the store. Do yourself a favor, and check those out first! Again, everything was reasonably priced and I was impressed with the selection, variety and super customer service. Mardi Gras Imports is like a Costco or Sam's Club for Mardi Gras beads and throws. You can't miss their purple, green and gold striped store that catches your eye as you ride down I-10 in Slidell. They're open to the public and carry one of the largest selections of Mardi Gras themed merchandise on the North Shore. You can find just about everything you need to get into the spirit: Beads (individual strands of specialty beads and cases of bead throws) Toy throws (mini footballs, hula hoops, hand clappers, etc.) Masks (wearable and decorative) Front door wreaths Saints & LSU spirit items Stuffed animals Souvenir cups Tee shirts Tiaras Randazzo's king cakes My only quibbles are about parking and price. At times the parking lot is inadequate to handle the patronage. Also, many bead stores in the area offer discounts for customers purchasing massive amounts in bulk. Not this one. One employee shared, "We don't give Krewe discounts. We offer the best price to everyone." Which sounds to me like a polite way of saying they don't need to give discounts since they're pretty much the only place to buy beads in town. I have been purchasing items from Mardi Gras Imports for almost 15 years. Although the prices are higher, I like to contribute to my local economy. In addition, my krewe has them provide specialty beads for the riders to purchase. For the first few years when my order came in, I was always given substituted merchandise for some of the items that I purchased. I was told they were out of stock. I complained, and this improved. My next issue was the amount of lighted items purchased, but then didn't work. This continues to be an issue. The final straw occurred yesterday, when my mother received a call saying that it was the last day to pick up merchandise. I NEVER received a call, nor did I get an email. When asked about this, I received several answers: "We can't call everyone." "We don't have everyone's email address." "We sent an email, maybe it's in your spam folder." "You should check your krewe's website." POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! read more

First the high points: they do have a nice selection of beads and throws, a well merchandised store, and the employees are helpful and knowledgeable. They especially have a great mix of theme and specialty beads. Now for the negative: The pricing and the packaging! They are the only location on the North Shore but for the most part they're pricing is a little bit higher than most of the New Orleans stores especially because they do not offer a krewe discount. Most other locations offer a 10% discount. Their response is that they offer low prices to everyone which would make more sense if their prices were the lowest, which they are not. with that said they do have great prices on feather boa's. Lastly I have an issue with the packaging. They still sell most of their beats by the case still in cardboard boxes while most other stores sell them already packaged in zipper bags. This is an issue because parades no longer allow you to bring boxes onto a float so you were forced to purchase bags and take the time to repackage. Almost every other store purchases their inventory already in those bags which saves you time and money. At the prices they are charging that added cost and inconvenience is not welcomed. read more
