I've been wanting to try a glass blowing class for a while and finally booked a 2 hour session. Signing up online is simple, with FAQ's to help you choose the right class, I went on a Sunday to the 1 pm class. There's ample parking at Mare Island with a brewery and a few other studios nearby. There were about 5 others in class. Since I arrived early, I got to talk to them a little bit 1:1 on the colors I wanted to use and learned a bit about how different colors interact with each other and with the heat. With instructor assistance, I got to actually roll the glass bits on, hold it in the furnace, actually blow and clip my piece off the stick. You get to pick from a few basic pieces and I choose the teardrop vase. Since the glass needs to cool a few days, I'll get to pick it up next weekend. Instruction and safety protocols were well done and this was a fun and fascinating way to spend a Sunday afternoon. They also sell glass art here with pieces made on site-this is a working studio.. Open weekends. Highly recommend taking a class with them if you're looking for a unique and interesting activity:

Hot Glass Cold Beer Glass Blowing at 7pm. Doug and Diana are super welcoming and friendly. 2nd time visit, where previously had made beautiful sea stars with Doug in Half Moon Bay which years later still grace my bookshelf in all glory, same as the day it was created! The Mare Island studio has plenty of blown glass ideas to spark creativity and help with the Tier selection decision making. It helps to know your color wheel to know which colors combine to make what color! Two projects selected red & pink heart and a pink & gold pumpkin. Doug's instructions through each session kept the 2 creators on point resulting in beautiful works of art. Definitely an awesome bonding activity whether for date night, friends & family, special occasions, or corporate team building events. Nice introduction to Mare Island Brew with the Pilsner and Lager. Truly enjoyed chatting and kicking back while the 2 creators were glass blowing. Thank you for a wonderful visit this evening! Looking forward to bringing home the heart & pumpkin soon!

We had a fantastic glass blowing class with Douglass. He was informative and patient with my 5 year old daughter and myself and we had a blast! We made glass bulbs and a glass that were able to pick up to take home the next day. I would highly recommend a class here as a fun activity with friends/kids or a super special date night. He's located right next door to the brewery!

Jason is a fantastic instructor -- patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing his craft. We each got to make a vase, a whiskey glass, and an ornament, and if you worked efficiently, there was even time to make a second piece. What made the experience even more memorable was the little touches Jason added -- he brought water, oranges, and chocolates to keep everyone fueled and happy throughout the session. It's the kind of thoughtfulness that shows he genuinely cares about his students having a great time. Jason has his own studio in San Francisco where he sells wall sconces, amazing high end pieces and teaches out of the Alameda location,m. Such a fun and unique experience, perfect for anyone with any level of artistic ability!…read more My mom and I took a glassblowing class here and both opted to make the milk jug/small vase. They have a handful of tiers that have different items you can make including paper weights, ornaments, pumpkin, and a terrarium. Each tier is priced differently and gradually increases as you move up a tier. When you book/preregister for your class, you have to select the tier you want to make from, but you are able to change it when you get there. My mom had selected a tier 2 item when booking, but switched to tier 1 the day of, and we were charged appropriately. Instructors were very helpful and gave good insight and demonstrated how the process worked. They were very hands on, and could be even more so if you needed them to be. Our class had some younger kids as well as adults, and everyone was given great care and the assistance they needed. You take turns each making your piece one at a time, so the actual process per person probably took around 20 minutes for tier 0-2 items. Depending on class size and how many people are in your group/when you arrive, you could expect to be there anywhere from 1 hour to 2.5. You don't get to take your blowing home right away, it has to sit in a hot oven overnight to set, so I sadly haven't seen my finished product yet, but I can't wait to pick it up and start putting it to use! Good pro-tip, wear long sleeves! I wore short sleeves because I figured I would be too hot in long, but the molten glass is VERY HOT and can irritate your skin just from the proximity! My arm turned super red and had a little bit of a heat rash the rest of the day, but it went away by the next morning.

I didn't know what to expect but it ended up being such a fun and unique experience. It's easy to book your glass blowing session online and it's only $80 for a small item. My friends and I all made small pumpkins to remember our visit and they turned out to be so beautiful. The day we came someone was wrong with the oven. It wasn't as hot as it should've been but the workers teaching us were very cool and easy going and we were still able to make our glass. They gave great instruction and helped us the whole time. I learned so much and loved learning how to do this! I like that they can even mail you your item for a small fee since it takes a day or two to cool. I would definitely do this again! It's such a special experience.

Need a one of a kind gift? Are you into American art glass collecting?…read more Well whatever your glass needs are, Glass Mountain can accommodate you. Glass Mountain works with Fenton Glass Art, Blenko, and other glass producers. They support the local Berkeley, CA art community and their artists. They are constantly hosting art shows and events to promote and show their original and collectable glass art. The proprietor Tony Weiden has a lifelong passion for glass, especially the stunning art pieces that have been created here in America for generations. Each time I visit I learn something new and interesting info about glass. If you can't find what you are looking for at Glass Mountain, Tony has many years of experience and knowledge with local vendors, antiques, etc.. and is always willing to help with your quest even if he does not make any $$ from it, that kind of business is hard to find now a days. I encourage you to check out his latest colorful Art Windows or "Dalle De Verre". He hand cuts pieces of colorful slab glass an inch thick to create images and patterns and would be willing to customize anything to suite your needs and/or imagination. I personally collect and love red glass and have purchased some beautiful investments from Glass Mountain i.e. a Blenko fruit bowl, vases, and the most adorable little red glass owl. I also go to Tony for Mother's Day and Christmas gifts each year! Check it out!

Single handedly, however, Mr. David Camner, the ceramics teacher at the high school, has made this school unlike any others. He began a glass blowing program at the school, introducing ceramics students to the beautiful medium of glass. This experience changed my life. I was given the opportunity to express myself through hot molten glass, and from this I began a passion for any and every piece of glass art. I hope I can convey to you how fortunate I was to have walked past the glass blowing workshop on my way to the parking lot from class one random day in high school. Not only are students able to learn to blow glass, but David Camner offers incredible workshops (hands on glass blowing with professional glass artists) where you get to experience a very sexy and heartfelt medium of art. There are also frequent class ornament, pumpkin, etc. sales at much lower prices than what you can find elsewhere for handblown glass, but just as good quality. This is what I hope I can recommend to you. And feel good not only about what you gain, but for what you give--the proceeds of any glass sale or workshop participation goes to maintaining the glass program at Palo Alto High School. One of only few (if not, the only) high schools with such a unique program, Palo Alto High School stands out in my mind for this very reason--enlightening me to a new passion for glass.
