Transferring the glass to another rod to shape the top

I did a Groupon where I made a wine glass! It was so exciting and nerve wracking. I kept thinking I was going to drop the glass!!

Booked the 1-hour snowman class with a groupon. A great way to enjoy an activity with friends, where you have experts with 20+ years of experience guiding you through the process of creating your own snowman, which will be ready for pickup in its box with your name on it in 2 days. Heads up - if you want a hat or scarf on your snowman, it's $20 extra per item added.

Super friendly staff and fun experience! Definitely recommend as a couple activity. Made glass ornaments with hubby and can't wait to pick it up!

My pumpkin was the clear pumpkin! It will be a gift for my mom.

Glass blowing? Who knew what fun it is! The wifey and kid like some TV show that contestants compete so we decided to try it ourselves. We chose the pumpkin making class. The instructors were super nice and explained step by step what to do. It was cool to see the process and feel the heat!!! Great afternoon activity or even better maybe do for a small bday party or event. Worth the time and money. We loved our finish products! We will be going back to make something for Christmas. Try something different !

My daughter and I took the beginning class and had such an amazing time. We made three different items and learned so much. Never did we ever feel unsafe and the small class size ensured that we all got lots of time to complete our items.

    Very helpful staff

We came here because I had a Groupon for a glass blowing class for two. The classes fill up fast so it took about 4 months to get one that worked for us. Besides that the only other downside is that the physical location is not in a great part of Oakland. We took an Uber express pool which makes you walk a little bit and it took a while for us to find it. The studio is located in a garage type warehouse. We started late due to a late arrival but we all finished on time. There are 2 staff members that help you the entire time and we had about 8 participants. They give you a demo first and then you work one on one with them to complete your piece of glass. The class is about 3 hours only because everyone has a one on one but really the process was only about 15 minutes. The staff was friendly and the experience was fun. Even though it was mostly them hand holding the whole time, it was probably necessary since we were all beginners. At least we all were able to complete a usable cup afterwards which probably would not have happened with the staff being less involved. They did mention after that they have classes where you can be more independent and do things like gather the glass yourself. The only other downside is the glass isn't ready for a few days so if you do not live near Oakland you have to make another trip to retrieve it. I did notice when I arrived to pick up my piece that there was a sign that they would ship it for $20 which they did not mention during the class that I would have preferred. All in all we had a great time learning/seeing something new. It is a little expensive but I think if given the opportunity we would try another class to make a more intermediate piece.

It's an awesome activity to do with friends or a good date activity! Everyone was super friendly and beginners can choose to make a duck, flower, or egg. Instructions were thorough and they guide you through every step. It's a very unique experience handling molten glass and shaping it. They also have other finished products if you're looking to buy additional items. I highly recommend recommend this to everyone and will be coming back to make more items!

So much fun. We took a beginner glass class and the instructors explained everything clearly and patiently. They walk you through the process and all of the safety precautions. They stay with you throughout the process for each step, guiding and supporting you. Absolutely recommend.

    School field trip

My son's class is here for a school field trip. Their space is large and spacious for two classes to fit into, plus parents. The guys here are great with their demo and explanation. If anything, I think the process of making the bowl that they did was a bit too long for 2nd and 3rd grader's, but for older kids it should be fine.

So much fun learning the beginner aspects of glass work. It gave me a new appreciation for the real art of glass work. Thank you!

Update: I picked up my jelly fish lamp from my class and I absolutely love it! It's mesmerizing!…read more It comes with the lamp stand which has a pretty long cord, two color changing light bulbs with a remote, and the attachment to hang the tentacles. (Some assembly required.) Attaching the tentacles can be tricky once you factor in the space the light bulb takes up. I ended up not attaching all of them and storing the rest as spares in case something happens. I would lay down a towel or assemble over a soft surface in case you drop a tentacle. FYI Jelly fish lamp pick up is typically two weeks after your session. Most other projects are available for pick up 16-48 hours after. I messed up and came too early because I was very excited (about 1 week after the class). Douglass went out of his way to disassemble one of his premade jelly fish pieces for sale to give me the lamp stand so I could take it home there. That's outstanding service! But I also wanted to help others so this doesn't inconvenience him again... Highly recommend taking a glass blowing class with Douglass or a member of his team before he retires! (If he discontinues the jelly fish class I hope they replace it with a workshop like Build a Bear that lets you customize a jelly lamp from premade parts available and help you assemble it there in the shop. That way you can see exactly what you're getting, potentially get colors that can't be made in the class like the dark blues, have different textured tentacles, and have the satisfaction of taking your piece home right away!)

The glass blowing process takes about 10 to 15 minutes per person depending on what is being created for a tier one purchase, which is what we all had. Not only was the instructor incredibly talented, but his ability to give direction and instruct while creating a fun experience for everyone was just next level. Such a fun and unique experience, perfect for anyone with any level of artistic ability!…read more My mom and I took a glassblowing class here and both opted to make the milk jug/small vase. They have a handful of tiers that have different items you can make including paper weights, ornaments, pumpkin, and a terrarium. Each tier is priced differently and gradually increases as you move up a tier. When you book/preregister for your class, you have to select the tier you want to make from, but you are able to change it when you get there. My mom had selected a tier 2 item when booking, but switched to tier 1 the day of, and we were charged appropriately. Instructors were very helpful and gave good insight and demonstrated how the process worked. They were very hands on, and could be even more so if you needed them to be. Our class had some younger kids as well as adults, and everyone was given great care and the assistance they needed. You take turns each making your piece one at a time, so the actual process per person probably took around 20 minutes for tier 0-2 items. Depending on class size and how many people are in your group/when you arrive, you could expect to be there anywhere from 1 hour to 2.5. You don't get to take your blowing home right away, it has to sit in a hot oven overnight to set, so I sadly haven't seen my finished product yet, but I can't wait to pick it up and start putting it to use! Good pro-tip, wear long sleeves! I wore short sleeves because I figured I would be too hot in long, but the molten glass is VERY HOT and can irritate your skin just from the proximity! I love coming here for the art, the comraderie of the staff and the clients are full of love, hugs and joy! I have bought art there, I have bought jewelry there, and we went to NYC to be present with one of their artists who had a piece in the Whitney Bienniel! I was hired to be the personal secretary to Dr. Katz who founded Creative Growth in Oakland, Creativity Explored in San Francisco, and Creativity Unlimited in San Jose (I believe they closed a while back). I was at the first conference of Art and Disabilities held at the center with representatives from the four centers and others. Some came as far away as Canada and Minnesota. At that time, Creative Growth was the star of the group and we all aspired to have their success. Well, NIAD has found it. The idea for the center started after the mental health facilities in CA were closed by Ronald Reagan. But before the closure, Florence, his wife and artist, would drive up with art supplies so that the people could create art. A lot of the clients were relocted to the bay area and he opened the center for them to create art. Eli was passionate about the clients and felt that they had a right to create and he created a center where that's possible.
