She went to Sonoma for many years where there was a greater demand for fine art but now she is back to Benicia on First Street. Her work is wall to wall amazing and honestly, I have so many of her pieces and I actually just bought another piece that I am waiting to be framed. I always tell her that I can't think of anything else I would want on my walls. I have a lot of art from Jim Buckles, Eyvind Earle, and Caroline Young but I must confess I have more works by Maria Talacona than any other artist. Her works are so near and dear to my heart because she is local and I know her so well. She mainly does fine art commissions for the Napa Valley Wine Community but here in Benicia, she is well known for her florals, grapes, and olives. At her studio downtown, she has a wonderful kitchen line with plates, towels and oven mitts that were in all the stores like Kohls, Target, and Walmart. She has won many awards but she gives back to the community by teaching Paint Nights on Friday Nights from 6 pm to 9 pm. I went to her Friday night class and it was super fun and I did really well. She does a Family Fun watercolor workshop three Saturdays a month (she is closed the 2nd Saturday of each month). They are super affordable as well. Anyway, I am her number one fan. Anyway, I hope Maria captured all I had to say when I wrote a testimonial for her website but also I just had to share again how I feel about her awesome work.

A friend from school told us about the school, so I brought my daughter in for a trial class. She loved it so much we signed her up right away. Not too long after, I noticed that a lot of the parents are very involved with the group. Some of them dance, others play instruments and some help with costumes and events. A couple of the moms invited me to take a class, but I remember trying Tahitian in high school and never quite picked it up. However, the whole culture at the studio is like a family. Knowing that I could bring my kids, I decided to try it out because I needed some form of exercise. Never did I imagine I would be two years in and still loving it. I went from just dancing as exercise to being able to perform in front of people, which I have always been scared to do. The best part of the studio is all the people from the owners/teachers to the families involved. There are no egos or people trying to outdo one another. Everyone is uplifting, supportive and helpful. And just like the name suggests, it is more than a studio, it is a cultural arts center. We are not just taught dances. We are taught the language, the meaning of the songs we dance and even how to make our own costumes. Plus, you are able to participate as much as you like. If you don't want to perform, you are not forced to do so. They even have special classes where they teach you how to play different instruments. There are even fitness classes like Zumba. Of course, right now due to COVID things are different, and extra precautions need to be taken, so we do not have gatherings like prior. However, I highly recommend this studio for anyone who loves the Tahitian culture or just loves to dance.

She surprised me w/the idea & we loved it. The instructors kept us safe and walked us through creating our pieces. She made a bowl & I a vase. If I remember correctly one oven was over 2,000 degrees and the other was around 900 degrees. Hella hot! It's great for a couple or small group, only takes 60-90mins and it goes by fast. We came to the mall for dim sum on a Sunday and after adding our name to the waitlist, we walked around the mall to checkout some of the newer establishments. We knew Claw Crushers was coming in, but this is the first visit where they were open! You can determine how many coins/tokens you would like to purchase to play at the front desk. Because we were taking off for a meal, we decided to start with $5 aka 5 tokens. Well of course, that turned into $15 real quick :) There's enough claw machines to play from with a group, and our family giggled trying to win a prize for our kiddo. My mom and husband ended up both winning, and while we were there, it seemed like most guests were taking something home which was nice to see! These winning stuffies are now apart of our regular rotation, and we will definitely be back next time we're at the mall. Our kiddo may even be a little bit taller to reach the controller next time! A fun addition to Pacific East Mall, no doubt.
