I went to Oakton Coins and Collectibles to have my collection appraised and get a second opinion…read more My collection consists of several PR70 DCAM coins, older Japanese coins, and an 1808 Admiral Gardner shipwreck coin, among other pieces. Unfortunately, I felt very rushed and was quickly made to feel as though I should be on my way. The gentleman assisting me spent quite literally less than two minutes looking over my entire collection. Rather than discussing the individual pieces or explaining his assessment, he essentially took a quick glance and told me, "Yeah, you only have $20 here." I understand that I don't have the most lucrative collection in the world. However, I know enough about what I own to know that the collection is worth more than $20 and contains pieces that warrant more than a cursory glance. What particularly bothered me was what happened when I pushed back regarding an 1853-1865 Japanese Kaei Isshu. The gentleman then took another look at the coin, checked its metal content, and rather than explaining what he thought it was or having a conversation with me about the piece, asked, "How much do you want for it?" It suddenly felt as though the focus had shifted toward trying to purchase the coin rather than helping me understand what I had. To be clear, I did not come in intending to sell my collection. I was primarily looking for a knowledgeable second opinion and hoped to have a conversation with someone who shared an interest in coins and collectibles. I cannot say with certainty why I was treated the way I was. I'm young, Mexican, walked in wearing casual clothes, and carried my collection in a backpack. Whether any of those things influenced the interaction, I obviously cannot know. What I can say is that I did not feel welcomed, taken seriously, or particularly wanted in the store. I left feeling as though I had been generalized as a young, naive Mexican rather than treated as someone who genuinely enjoys collecting and wanted to learn more about his collection. The experience bothered me enough that I downloaded Yelp specifically to write my first review. I see that Oakton Coins and Collectibles has many positive reviews, and I recognize that my experience may have been an outlier. I can only speak to how I was treated during my visit, but unfortunately, the experience left enough of an impression that I will not be returning.

It was kind of hard to dig out and I figured it was all fine so I let it go. I came home and finally dug it out and saw the obverse looked terrible and this coin will be difficult to re-sell. Theres no way a coin dealer wouldn't have known this. He sold me this messed up coin at full price anyways without telling me one side looked like hell. So at best its buyer beware at this place. I'll never go back and he lost a customer over a $65 coin that he only made a few bucks for. Its the dishonesty that bothers me.

We were trying to both buy and sell coins. There was a purchase rate difference given to sellers between the owner (18x face value), and the employee (17x face value). The rates should have been the same. The owner quoted higher face value purchase rates than the employee. So sellers beware. I caught the lower rate and called the employee out on it, and he adjusted the offered rate upwards to where it should have been. I felt very comfortable working with the owner. Knows the business, very approachable, Has a good understanding of coins. The other employee used the lower rate on another customer while I was there. Thus you get the low stars review. After selling some of my inventory I tried to purchase coins from them. They had gone to a show the week before and sold most of their inventory. So that was the real drawback. There was hardly any inventory, so disappointing. I would like to give them another try, I just don't know what their normal business model is. Is it buying precious metals, or selling coins?

Went here today to sell my bracelet, and I would not recommend wasting your time. The guy seemed…read morenice, but I wouldn't trust them when it comes to evaluating gold. Their scale showed my bracelet at only 17.26 grams, and they tested it as 18K gold, even though I know for a fact that it is 21K gold. Based on their results, they offered me only $2,200. I then went to another pawn shop in Arlington Heights, where my bracelet weighed 25.7 grams and I was offered $2,600. The large difference in both the weight and offer raised serious concerns for me. Because of that, I will not be coming back.

I'm not a coin expert, but I needed to sell some silver coins my dad had for MANY decades and after doing a good amount of research I called Arlington Coin who said over the phone they were buying then offered what I'm confident was a very fair price after reviewing the coins. Downtown Arlington Heights has changed a lot over the decades, but this place is still the same and a great option for supporting a local business and get great prices if you're in the market to buy or sell coins.
