Unfortunately Ive had to change my review. I bought a silver Eagle from NCS in a presentation case and the coin looked fine except, strangely, it had the reverse showing when it should have been the obverse. It was kind of hard to dig out and I figured it was all fine so I let it go. I came home and finally dug it out and saw the obverse looked terrible and this coin will be difficult to re-sell. Theres no way a coin dealer wouldn't have known this. He sold me this messed up coin at full price anyways without telling me one side looked like hell. So at best its buyer beware at this place. I'll never go back and he lost a customer over a $65 coin that he only made a few bucks for. Its the dishonesty that bothers me. read more

A mixed bag depending on who you interact with. This is a small business so I get opening the store a bit late (an hour and 15 minutes after the reader board information). We were trying to both buy and sell coins. There was a purchase rate difference given to sellers between the owner (18x face value), and the employee (17x face value). The rates should have been the same. The owner quoted higher face value purchase rates than the employee. So sellers beware. I caught the lower rate and called the employee out on it, and he adjusted the offered rate upwards to where it should have been. I felt very comfortable working with the owner. Knows the business, very approachable, Has a good understanding of coins. The other employee used the lower rate on another customer while I was there. Thus you get the low stars review. After selling some of my inventory I tried to purchase coins from them. They had gone to a show the week before and sold most of their inventory. So that was the real drawback. There was hardly any inventory, so disappointing. I would like to give them another try, I just don't know what their normal business model is. Stopped in looking to sell some silver proof sets and coins. HORRIBLE customer service! I was barely greeted. No thorough inspection of what I brought, let alone any type of appraisal, verbal or written. I was just told that what I had was not worth much and was offered approximately $150.00. I called them to find out the price and availability on junk silver coins and the staff told me what was available and the price. I immediately drove 30 minutes to their shop and was then told a completely different story about both price and availability of the silver coins. When I politely told them that I just spoke with a staff member a few minutes before getting in my car, the man at Niles Coin Shop just shrugged his shoulders and told me that was "too bad, the price is the price, take it or leave it." I visited this store awhile back to try to find some "clean" (barely used) foreign currency to share and give to students as part of a lesson that I teach at local schools through Junior Achievement. I had raided some other stores dry and I was looking for a new source. In the class, we review exchange rates and differences between currencies, so sharing an actual piece of foreign currency with the students is something that sparks their interest and is appreciated by the students. Typically coin stores support people who do this as it also promotes the hobby of collecting coins and currency as well. At other stores I have visited, proprietors have typically helped me look for certain bills and even given me a break on the cost, as I typically buy about 50 pieces at a time. I went to this store and asked if they had any foreign currency and the person assisting me started to look around. He asked another staff person (likely the owner or a manager) about a collection that had recently come in and the owner/manager as much said that they didn't want to be bothered with my request. So, I choose not to be bothered with giving this establishment anything more than 1 star. I'm a collector myself and much of my learning about coins was through helpful and considerate dealers who would let me browse or check out their grab bag selections etc. It's too bad that this coin store apparently doesn't have time for helping to promote the future of their hobby. read more

I will say this upfront...im HORRIBLE at saving. If I have some extra cash its normally gone and I sit there afterwards wondering where it went. Becoming more aware of my flaw I decided to start investing in silver. It forces me to save and lets face it, its fun to pretend to be scrooge mcduck. I live in niles and work in the city and have passed by this place a million times but one day decided to stop by after work. They were closing up and I didn't want to keep them longer then they had to so I just came by the next morning and picked up some silver bars. The person who took care of me was nice... im horrible at names I returned 2 more times during the week.... I get the same questions day in and day out at work so I was happy that when I showed my cards and asked a question they probably hear every day that they took it in stride and answered it with a smile. That means a lot. I went in a day after metals took a tumble to stock up a little bit but they were sold out but said they will have more inventory the next week and said they basically were bought out in a matter of hours. I was there the day before the prices dropped and they had a fair amount so what they said makes sense. All of the workers in there have a sarcastic sense of humor towards each other and its more of a club that I hope to become more of a part of . They have a fair amount of coins in the cases but I have to be honest im not sure what im looking at. But I find the fun in learning more and possibly collecting a few coins more for the historical value then anything else. I just find it cool to own something that was so crucial to a past civilization As long as they continue to have inventory I will be back and feed my new obsession. read more

I am fairly new to the Precious Metals community and I decided to visit Niles Coin Shop despite the mixed reviews. I am happy to say that I had a great first experience with them. I stopped by in the morning and I was greeted by Rob who actually recognized me from liking their Facebook page. I had some silver Morgan dollars that I was interested in selling. I didn't know if this shop was trustworthy so I brought a wringer with me that I knew was collectible. I was waited on by a grumpy older man that wasn't even interested in looking at the coins and told me that he would only give me the melt-down price on the coins. I had a bunch or jewelry and coins etc, in a box that my parents left behind. It was laying around collecting dust so I decided to bring it in to see if any of it was worth anything. AVOID THIS SHOP.......worst coin experience I've ever had since 1979.current owners, rob and mike, are so unappreciative of all the heavy business I've given them over the years. Rob, who is a super jerk, thought he could cruelly mock me and make sport of me unfairly. I asked him to stop, nicely and repeatedly, yet his taunting only escalated. These people do not appreciate your business at all. It all came to a head when the other owner, mike, who drinks liquor while working, bitterly told me to get the " F " outta his store....not because I did anything wrong...no...it was because it was obvious rob and mike struggled when I was in their presence. So, because of their own "Problems " to put it mildly, they would mock me. I have never been treated so poorly in any business experience, ever. That doesn't even say how they lowball you when buying your rare coins. Being offered $25. apiece for 3 gorgeously toned coins valued between $500. And $1000. each is criminally low. Offering $30. Total For 1952 and 1953 proof halves when another local store paid me $110.00??? $2.00 less paid on BU silver eagles than any other local store??? And on and on.....It seems niles coin will pay the least of most local shops consistently. That's been my experience there. And I'm a coin expert. Beware if you don't know what your coins are worth. And how about the game they play....like asking you " how much do YOU want for YOUR coins??? " hoping You will quote a lower price than they would normally pay. Again....I am a professional and they treat me this way.....You can say I feel R-O-B-B-E-D at niles coin shop. Great name, by the way...it fits you well!! I've bought gold and silver here a few times now and love this shop, Rob and the other gentleman with the southern accent (forgot his name,) are both polite, professional and fair. I love to negotiate and get the best price on things, but really didnt have an opportunity to with these guys. Their buillon is already cheaper than Ebay and priced better than just about every other shop in the area. They have also bought coin from me for more than I had expected. All around just good guys. The overall rating for this shop is not fair. This shop is professional, honest and reputable. They have done numerous appraisals and have given good value for them. They have always been nice to my and I when we pop in with a quick question or appraisal. They have bought hummels, an old Japanese rifle and other items at a fair price. I think these guys have got the message from the 2 poor reviews before me. My father died and I brought his coin collection here. It was kind of haphazard and they took their time and explained to me that much of what I had was worth more as metal (silver) than collectible coins. They DID tell me what was rare and worth more and offered me very fair prices. You need to take your time and do a little research with things on some websites or Ebay and other stores but if you do you will find this store fair and above average. I verified that what they told me was correct and for that they are 5 stars! I visited Stamp King on Higgins in Chicago and another local shop and they were not as good as these guys. My advice is be patient and visit once and "cool off" for a day or two so you can verify bids and offers and then come back when your mind is made up. Isn't that the best idea most times anyhow? I'm writing this review in part to try to get the average rating up, as I don't think it is at all a fair rating for this shop. I have been in here a couple of times, as recently as this morning. I also frequent several other coin shops in the area. This is currently my favorite. The service has always been professional and accommodating, and the prices are very fair. You can easily walk out of here feeling you got very good coins for your money, unlike several other shops that overgrade or charge outlandish premiums. Having seen with many other shops have to offer has only made me appreciate this one all the more, and I'll be going back many, many more times. read more

I made a deal with one of the workers on the phone and promptly drove to the store. He told me that he would hold the coins for me at the price we agreed upon. I wasted my time and gas to drive all the way to this store only to find out that the workers would not give me the coins for the price we agreed upon. My dad passed and I had silver coins. They would not even look at the condition, just told me silver market so my mom said ok. I had other coins that I knew were in great shape and a younger man told me he would give me $120.00 . I said no way . I told him I would keep them then.
