Marianne worked assiduously for two hours on my piano, and tuned it twice, in fact. (It had been so long since the last tuning that, alas, that was necessary.) I trust Marianne to know what's best for a piano so readily agreed to another visit in three (instead of the customary six or 12) months because she knows these instruments well. As an adult learner, I wanted to find a piano teacher who could accommodate my schedule, help me piece together the scattered bits of piano skill/knowledge I retained from childhood, and keep me motivated to learn more. Once I explained what I ultimately wanted to accomplish, she guided me to materials that would help me progress at my desired pace. Marianne does a great job of selecting practice pieces and study materials that are both accessible and challenging. Each week, I feel like I learn something new that builds on past lessons. Marianne also reinforces concepts that I don't have a strong grasp on and incorporates them into new lessons as we move forward. Because she pays such close attention to detail, I know that I am learning solid technique that will make me a better pianist overall. M was brave to take me on as a student, because I studied piano for a couple years in high school and developed lots of bad habits! She was so patient and kind to me. In particular, I was never very good with rhythm, and I told M this. She was very creative on the fly, and she developed a lesson especially tailored to me. She picked a few pieces of music, reviewed the time signatures, and then helped me practice my counting while I bumbled through the notes. At one point I couldn't get the notes right, so she played the notes while I counted until I was ready to try again. She also wrote out some rhythm exercises on the spot for me to practice -- very impressive! If I had any criticism, it was that M was determined to make sure I had a good lesson, and so it left me wanting to please her as a student. She wouldn't accept my own pessimism! Amazing piano instructions! I've been taking lessons for 2 years. I had limited prior piano practice and played the clarinet growing up. So I was not completely new to music but I had serious gaps in my knowledge of piano--i was not your typical piano student. Marianne was able to adapt to my background and teach to my abilities. As a child I grudgingly took piano lessons for a while at my mother's insistence. They didn't last long that I recall. Of course, now as at 48yo I really do want to learn to play piano and I knew it would be from scratch since it had been so long ago that I took lessons. With the help of my husband's online research, we found Ms. M. Ms. M has been a gift! She immediately put me at ease with her fun and approachable personality. Her process of first building a foundation of knowledge of recognizing keys, notes, rests, and timing gave me a solid base so that when we did begin work at the piano I felt like I knew what I was doing more so than had we sat down at the piano on day one. Ms. M has made each lesson enjoyable and informative. She has shared her love of classical music pieces with me as well as found simple jazz and blue pieces for me when she realized my interest extended into those genres as well. Each lesson, Ms. M sets goals for me to work towards for our next lesson so I am always improving. No matter if I am playing classical or jazz, the learning and practicing have been both fun and challenging, but never a chore. She has taught me practice and learning techniques that have sped up my "getting" pieces of music.
