Maribel is a sweet little consignment shop. I go there to buy sweaters for the winter and long sleeved shirts. I also got an outrageous pair of pants there once. Mostly their clothes are very girly, too girly for me, but I'm sure there's lots of women out there who'll like them. Maribel is one of the best gems in the Lake Merritt area. If you like the excitement and unpredictability of thrift shopping but hate sifting through piles of rejects before you find something good, Maribel will come to the rescue. Everything is organized by color (so for people like me who only wear black, no need to waste time in the pink section!). Anne, the owner, has a very discerning eye for both fashion and quality, so you'll never suffer the disappointment of rushing to the dressing room with the most amazing dress in the history of the world only to find it has some irreparable defect. As much as I love the clothes, I must say my main weaknesses in Maribel are the amazing boot selection (I can't stop myself from buying boots even when it's 100 degrees) and the jewelry/ accessories. Anne's jewelry selection features local artists, big names, small names, you name it. I have splurged on some of the pricier pieces, as I have also gone home with a smile on my face and a great necklace for $20.... Oh, and don't pay attention to the yelpers who complain about 'unfriendly vibes' from Anne and her employees- my best guess is that those erroneous complaints came from ladies who like to have someone's head up their ass every time they step out to shop. I don't....Yet another great thing about Maribel- the sales assistants and owners are genuine. They are polite and earnest with their shopping advice and help, without crowding you or trying to up-sell you. My only complaint is that I live and work too close to Maribel and are tempted by their goods on too regular a basis for my budget concerns! read more

Now that I think of it, I've been consigning and shopping at Maribel for years and as a result Ann and Sophia have become friends. As a consummate shopper and someone who values fashion and personal style, that says a lot. I am reluctant to think how much money I've spent over the years (instead of cashing out, though that happens as well from time to time, I like to think of it as an offshore savings account, I live in SF you see and make special trips to Maribel to swap) on their fabulous jewelry selection, not to mention on bags, jeans. boots etc. I am always appreciative of their honesty, if ever I leave there empty handed or with some new fabulous necklace or handbag it's only after I've taken the thoughtful and honest opinion of either Ann or Sophia into consideration. After 10 years, Maribel is still my go-to store for clothing and accessories that I love, can't find elsewhere and wear year after year. As I write this review, I'm wearing my favorite Tory Burch blouse, Viv & Ingrid earrings and a necklace - all purchased at Maribel. In fact, it's the rare day when I'm not wearing something I've bought over the years at Maribel. Let me open by saying that I love the clothing that this store offers. What isn't awesome about it is the lack of service. Or should I say, lack of acknowledgement when it comes to certain clientele. I've been snubbed a few times now by different salespeople. Yesterday was by far the worst. No recognition of my presence at all! However, a minute after I arrived another woman arrived and the saleswoman was falling all over her. I don't appreciate being treated this way in my neighborhood. If you don't want to provide service to me I would almost appreciate that you just say that as opposed to providing poor treatment. My husband makes fun of me because I call this the "bitchy owner store". He can't believe the number of problems I've had there with her, and I'm a really easy going person. If you are looking for cool used/ vintage clothes at a good price, this is not your store. Clothes are standard, but I rarely find anything I would consider particularly cool or "a find". I have bought a few pairs of work pants, but never ended up wearing them much. Everything is way overpriced... vintage leather belts (that break as soon as you get home) for $60? Come on! The owner has horrible people skills. When I tried to exchange the $60 belt for store credit, she gave a ton of attitude and basically told me, "no". Eventually, after thinking about it for a week, she did give it back to me. After this, I actually went back because it is close to my house and easy for me to get to with the kids and the stroller if I'm out jogging. After one of my overpriced $65 dollar pair of earrings fell out of my ear a few weeks after buying it, I went in and special ordered a replacement ($35). It was supposed to be in a week later and I was supposed to receive a call to come get it. I left several messages over the next few weeks and no one ever called me back. When I did decide to jog over with both kids to find out what happened in person, the salesgirl said the earring had come in and gave it to me. A day later, I get a call from the owner telling me that the salesgirl was poorly trained and that she had made a mistake by giving me a new earring from a pair rather than my "replacement" new earring.. why would this matter? She wanted me to bring the earring back to the store and keep waiting for my new earring to come in. She did not apologize or offer a discount. When I told her it was going to be hard for me to come back in right away because of my two kids, she started yelling at me and then told me to forget about it before hanging up on me. I would avoid this store and its negative vibes like the plague, especially if the owner is working that day. read more

I live near Lakeshore and go into Maribel often.If you need a great dress for a party or an event this is a good place to shop. However, this place is priced a bit too high. I am sorry but a used dress shouldn't be the same price as it would be at Nortstram Rack or on sale.It has been worn and it is not the current season so by nature of the clothing racket which has a %300 mark-up, those factors should be taken in consideration. I understand they have to pay rent, but I would reduce it by 15%-%20 in order to make it reflect "used" merchandise. That being said, they are excellent curators and often have very high end apparel that I would buy if I had a bigger clothing budget. The owner, however, has a horrible attitude, I often peak in there and if she is in there I will not go in. She always has a sour look on her face and has been rude or dismissive to me numerous times. I am certain that if I was wearing Prada instead of sweatpants she would of acted different to me. I am a Grand Lake/ Lakeshore native and wanted to say I have not only sold and traded at Maribel, I have also dragged friends from SF to this awesome store! I looked up Maribel to find out what season they are currently buying for and when I saw the negative reviews i decided to add my observations. The owner has been nothing but very friendly to me, and has offered many good suggestions for purchases. The staff lets me nose around without bugging me, but offers help when I glance up--perfect for a shopper like me. I have bought Gucci bags, frye boots, Tom Ford sunglasses, Diane Von Furstenburg dresses, to name a few. I have left behind Ella Moss, Current/Elliot, Diesel and a few obscure high ends lines only a fellow avid fashionista would recognize, all for a fair price. I go to Maribel once every three or four months. I've found some nice pieces, but agree that the service can be indifferent. Selection varies -- sometimes wonderful, often sparse and uninspired. It would be most helpful if the owners would publicly post what they are looking for in consignment: what brands, seasons, sizes, cleanliness standards, they are looking for. read more

I've been shopping and consigning at Maribel for several years now and I still love the store. The selection of clothing, accessories and jewelry are also interesting, up-to-date and in great condition. Not only that- quite often -there are incredible finds (like my classic bright pink Prada pumps) or my gorgeous leather handbag (with blue/green/brown floral pattern) by Megan Park. The owner runs a efficient consignment business and really knows what she is doing. I always find shopping there a relaxing and pleasant experience. I wear a size 16 or 18. If you are a larger woman, don't bother with this place. It's for small woman and girls. I looked through what they had, and was not impressed. Everything looked a little shabby. Nothing very stylish or trendy. I am surprised they can stay in business with the small amount of stock they have and the high rent they must be paying. read more

I just discovered Maribel. I'm one of those people who won't buy clothes unless I can get them on the way to the cash register with my tampons or cat food, which really sucks because I theoretically like the way Banana Republic & Anthropologie clothes look & if I just had more patience I'm sure I could wear it well. Maribel happened to be between yoga & my car & I could spare a few minutes, so I dipped in. In most stores, I have no idea where to start (case in point: I stumbled into a department store once on my own accord - read: one time ever - and the answer to my question "where's the jackets" was "what brand?" or "what kind?" or something equally ridiculous. The year was 1999). Maribel has a style that doesn't require some base knowledge; I bet I could build a wardrobe just shopping here & I would not look like an ad for any one company. I like that it's consignment for "green" reasons -earth & money both. Like as if someone did my shopping for me & then just let me pick from the selection. Or some super fashionista gave me access to her wardrobe. Sweaters, check. Jeans, check. Sweaters with other sweaters & jeans with other jeans. I saw a pair of jeans that looked clean & soft, I tried them on, they fit nicely & I bought them for $35, which I thought seemed cheap. I don't know what brand they are but I'm sure it's probably an expensive one b/c they feel so comfy. Finally, I can retire the ones that suck from '07. I will be back. read more

This review is about consigning. I took 9 or 10 items in on a Saturday. They were classic pieces in very, very good condition. There were no other consignors in the store at that time. Two clerks reviewed my clothes while I sat in my car...no pressure. I was informed that they would keep 5 items. On the following Tuesday, I received a message that "after further review, they would only be taking 2 of the 5 items, and I could pick up the other 3". I went in on Friday of the same week to retrieve my 3 items. The clerk could not find them! It's a small store...really! She called another clerk to see if she knew where they were. No answer. Did I live in the area, she asked me. No, I said. She asked if I could wait to see if the clerk called back. While I was waiting, I could see my 2 items hanging on what must have been an "intake" rack behind the counter. After nearly a week they were still not priced and out for sale? WTF? Time is ticking by. After 10 minutes, the clerk called back and told the clerk where my items were. She brought out the bag and I told her I would be taking the other 2 items also. I have been consigning for 25 years and this was a shocking experience. Very poor business practice, and based on my experience who knows if I would have ever seen my share of the sales when they couldn't even find 3 items! Sellers beware! read more

I read some of the reviews about customer service and given that I go in there every few weeks, I just want to say that all the employees are down to earth and honest. They may not be those fake gushing retail employees, but they surely are professional, respectful and easy to engage. I rather like the style of easy-goingness and super chill vibe. Gorgeous, well-curated clothes from high end designers -- if you want Tory Burch, DVF, Vivienne Westwood, etc for pennies on the dollar (or hundreds on the thousands, really), this is the place to go. i love maribel, as a place to both sell and buy. ann does such a great job of choosing what to carry, including some high-end designer stuff (i recently bought an amazing prada dress that i'm so excited about!), local designers (i.e. erica tanov, in great condition), vintage, and brand-new clothes with their original tags still on. the accessories, especially the jewelry, are fantastic; one of my favorite necklaces is an 18k with diamonds melissa joy manning that i got at maribel a couple of years ago. as for ann and the women who work for her, i've had only good experiences. read more

Maribel has been my go-to place for adding to my collection of good sweaters. In the process, I am now the proud owner of a great Trina Turk dress. Between the Trina Turk dress and the Eileen Fisher sweater, for example, I have 2 items that I would never have bought at retail prices. Maribel allows me to buy and own the better labels without blowing my monthly clothing addiction budget. I think Anne and Sophia are very helpful without breathing down your neck. I much prefer to not be stalked while shopping. When I need their opinion, though, there is no hesitation on their part to let me know if something looks right. Whenever my husband needs to get me a gift, I ask for a gift certificate to Maribel. There's always going to be something special there that I want. read more

Despite the mixed reviews on Yelp, I continued to both shop and consign here. Never again! When I came in to pick up items that had not sold, I discovered the employee had never put the most valuable item I had left on the inventory list (a handmade Italian leather belt purchased in Rome, which she specifically noted was very stylish). It was mysteriously gone. The person who helped me that day said she would check with the woman who had taken in the items and get back to me. She never did. I called and left a message three days later and never got a call back. A week later I again called and spoke briefly to the second woman, who put me off saying she would check with the owner the next day and get back to me. I never got a call back. My third and final message a week later was not returned. The combination of poor business practices (most places give you a list of items you leave with them so you can confirm the accuracy) and shockingly poor customer service means I will no longer be giving this store my business. The indifferent attitude (if not disdain) toward clients that other reviewers mention was clearly evident in this transaction. Yes, Maribel has nice things, but so do other consignment shops in Oakland. But unlike Maribel, in my experience, the other shops have systems in place to ensure consigned items are properly tracked. Equally important, they have always shown appreciation for clients who are consigning their items. Resolving this issue could have been simple (beginning with an apology) but the owner instead chose to ignore it, hoping it would go away. Well, I'm definitely going away now, and will suggest to friends and neighbors who shop there that they do the same. read more

great store with nice inventory. owner clearly has a good eye for style. they are very fair about their consignment items, and only seem to take what is in season and latest styles (good for the buyer!) they don't seem too hung up on having 'high fashion' or couture items, and have a nice range of prices. i have also gotten some unique jewelry there, often from local artists. read more

I don't agree with one of the below posts. Most of my wardrobe is from Maribel. What I LOVE about Maribel is that the store is NOT cluttered with so many items it becomes distracting. I love that Anne, the owner takes pride in her store, the items she chooses and her creative window displays. I love that the items are hung by color and not by size so that if you are looking for something specific, you don't have to dig to find the color you are looking for first and then see if it's the right size. I love her taste in the display pieces she chooses to organize her boots and also the jewelery case is very classy. I love that Anne and her employees take the time to steam clothes that comes in and hang them up. I've seen other consignment stores throw clothes in baskets after I've taken the time to press items that wrinkle easily. Her consignment store, in my opinion is one of the few that don't smell musty. Thanks Ann for the many years of shopping and for all the beautful clothes I've found at your store!!
