A local recommended that I check out MarieBette Cafe for an afternoon pick me up and I am so glad that we decided to visit! This cute little European inspired coffee shop makes a MEAN peach matcha made with a housemade syrup from locally-picked peaches. Honestly, it doesn't get any better than that! We were also on the search for their famous pretzel croissant but unfortunately it was sold out (and usually sells out earlier in the day). Seems local favorite because it felt like everyone was here! Visited on a Sunday around noon and the line was out the door! Definitely recommend their breads and baked goods - their baguette is SO GOOD, I understand why everyone was buying out their baguettes! Charlottesville is near and dear to my heart. But what stands out in this town is that everyone is so kind and thoughtful. With so many options, it is always difficult to nail down a place to go, but MarieBette is hands down a must visit every time. Prepare for the lines to be out the door, but sit tight and make friends in line:)! I always take a sourdough for the road! They always have a unique design! The crust is perfectly crispy, and the inside is soft and tangy with that classic sourdough bite. You can't leave without a loaf (or two) to take home. A must = Hot Chocolate with a homemade marshmallow. My friends know that is the one thing I won't stop talking about non-stop. I am not even a huge chocolate fan but this one is divine. The hot chocolate is made with a ganache that is so heavenly. It is the kind of drink that feels like a hug in a mug. And, just when you think it can't get any better, they top it off with a homemade marshmallow that melts perfectly into the warmth. Pure comfort in every sip. *This review is specifically for gluten free (GF) folks* (If you are not gluten free, this place is probably a 5 star rating) This bakery offers a very few select GF pastries, which is a nice offering. With that said, it is super super integrated with the other pastries - it almost felt like there was no attempt for separation. I personally understand that there is always a risk when it's a "typical" bakery, but some slight extra precautions such as putting all of the GF on one side of the pastry case would be nice. The GF options were also not labeled, so I had to ask staff (even though the GF options did exist). And of course, I do always wish there were more options :) In my photos, the "financier" is gluten free. I went in at 2:25pm to get a coffee and pastries for my partner and I. By 2:40, the kind boys at the bar had given us our coffee and pastries to eat in. Another employee asked us if we would be eating in or dining out while we were ordering. We immediately went to find a seat in the dining area after waiting on our dine-in order and were told that the area was closed while others sat in the area. We were asked to leave and told we could sit outside if we wanted to sit down. According to google maps, the location didn't close for more than 2 hours. $26 for 2 pastries and 2 coffees and we were immediately ushered outside? What made us different than the older men who were allowed to eat in peace? Racism? Homophobia? Will not be going back. You can get the same pastries at Whole Foods or CouCou, and nobody will treat you like you don't belong. read more

Good amount of seating, but there's definitely not enough parking to accommodate its popularity (very Charlottesville). They have a huge pastry case and everything looks delicious. You order at the counter and take a number to sit if you choose to eat there. The coffee is fine, doesn't stand out. The pastries really are the stars and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them! Such an adorable gem in the heart of Charlottesville! This place was heavily recommended by seemingly every UVA student / alum on earth, so I just had to make a pit stop when I drove through town on my way to a week-long hiking trip. I came by on a late Sunday morning just after 11 AM; their brunch service was in full swing so there wasn't a ton of open seating, and they had already run through most of their most popular selections. However, I managed to snag a gorgeous five-grain batard loaf for a week of sandwiches and, at the barista's recommendation, a peach financier to fuel me through the next leg of my road trip. The financier was delightful -- slightly crumbly, but also rich and buttery, with a wonderful peachy flavor. It was the perfect late afternoon pick-me-up and a great pair to my almond milk latte. The slightly tart peach was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of summer flavors, and it helped to balance out the sugar in the rest of the pastry. I didn't enjoy the batard loaf immediately, but it was the perfect hearty, flavorsome bread to build my sandwiches on throughout the week after long days of hiking and climbing. It had a slightly nutty bite from all the seeds, and it kept up surprisingly well throughout the week. I only really noticed it starting to get a smidge stale around day 3 -- if you aren't wandering around the wilderness, I'm sure freezing it would be a great way to preserve its day-one freshness. Beyond the delightful food, the servers / baristas were all super friendly! They offered a remarkably warm welcome, were super helpful in choosing the best pastries / sandwich loafs, and generally helped to craft a lovely atmosphere. Every time I stop into Charlottesville Marie Bette is a must! All the pastries are so amazing! From their cookies to their croissants, breakfast plates-I love it all! There is a bit of a wait, it's usually pretty busy- no surprise since they are THAT good!! This place came highly recommended and I could see why. We arrived around 9:45am and there was a good sized line inside of the bakery. Thankfully the line moved quick - the workers were on it! The display of the pastries made me want to buy everything - Can we get a sample platter? There is a good amount of seats inside and outside, though the outside is right near the street so you'll have to contend with road noise. The Apple Galletto was flakey, Apple-y, and delicious. I recommend it! The almond croissant was tasty though it's tough to mess one of those up. The croissants breakfast sandwich was amazing. One of the workers recommended getting bacon and I believe that was the right choice. The Brioche Feuillette, the Banana Sourdough, and the "Keswick Sandwich" were - I kid you not, WORLD CLASS good. The quality of the lamination of the croissant for the sandwich was PERFECT. The sandwich slaps you with flavor: saltiness from the ham, pepper from a BUNCH of arugula, lil' sweetness from the apple butter - proper sandwich. The quality of the Brioche (in flavor) and flavor of pastry cream, amazing, again lamination crazy well done. The banana sourdough was jaw droppingly executed. The banana flavor present & strong, quintessential soft & "wet" center that you get from classic banana bread somehow balanced with a beautifully caramelized crust all with that sourdough "tanginess". Absolutely one of the best bakeries I've been to and will be my go-to spot whenever I'm in Charlottesville. My personal favorite is the Chocolate Almond Croissant. Also a fan of the Pecan Bun and the Caneles. Not only do they have great pastries, but also some delicious breakfast sandwiches. Both the cold brew and americano were great. Plenty of street parking in the area. They get very busy on the weekends. I'm not sure what it's like during the week. Lines form outside near the ramp. I had some time to kill in between appointments so I decided to stop in to have coffee and do work. I was fortunate with parking in their lot, but fills up fast. There is street parking available if you can find it. There's plenty of seating options, inside and outside. It's a cute casual vibe. You order at the front and then they bring you your drinks and food to your table. I was bummed they didn't have any iced chai, but I got a small iced mocha with almond milk instead which was good. For breakfast, I got the bacon and egg on a baguette and it was delicious! The scrambled eggs are homemade and taste like they're coming from a 5 star restaurant! The Kouign Amann in particular was one of the best bakery items I have ever gotten. We went back to get a few more before we left. We also got the apple galette, and the brioche feullete- and they were all so delicious. Very flaky and buttery. The sandwich was good - open faced Monroe. But felt the egg could have been more fluffy and it could have used more caramelized onion. But it was delicious. Service - they were friendly and helpful at the register. We have a nut allergy and they were very careful to make sure the chef knew about it. We appreciate that a lot. Ambiance is very cute and comfortable. Not a large place. They have closed most of the indoor seating now, but there are a few seats inside and outside. ***LOCATION*** The location we visited was in a part of Charlottesville I don't come to often. Buttery and flakey is always what you want in a croissant. She ordered us mini canelé which had a nice crunch. They felt like popcorn in the sense where you can't just have one. We shared their croque madame which was so tasty. It was open faced too. I found my café au lait to be fine. ***PRICE*** Pastries and drinks run from $2.50-$4. The croque madame was $10.50. The highest prices here are cakes or pies. The next highest prices are breads and lunch items. ***BATHROOM*** Two single stalls are available in the back. They're kept clean and have little heaters to keep them warm. ***CONCLUSION*** It was a cute spot to meet a friend. We had to sit outside because there was no seating inside.
