Only open seasonally but we love to go there every summer! Love the calamari and the gnocchi and the bread!

I used to love this restaurant ....and then I moved away. I've been talking about going back every time I go home to visit in Missoula...but it's located in Stevensville, just far enough away that I never seem to make it. Last weekend I texted a friend and asked if she and her hubby wanted to joint me and my hubby.....she responded YES!!!! Oh, my. Why don't I make time every time I visit Missoula? The food is amazing! They've added onto the building probably 3-4 times over the year reflecting how popular they are. The ambiance is a bit like going to Grandma's house. It's not super upscale....but comfy and homey. Plenty of parking and some outdoor seating for summer. They are open Fri/Sat...Sun? You pick from the list of maybe 4 appetizers, 6+ entrees....having a sample of wine while you "shop". Before you are seated you have a chance to view the 5 different homemade breads you may order with dinner, and the 5 or so homemade desserts. Once you are seated....you order what you want. Of course, we always order too much. The portions are BIG. We had a nice bottle of wine (they also have beer), an AMAZING pumpkin ravioli, sampled 2 of the breads (garlic knots and sun dried tomato bread), dinner comes with salad....then came the HUGE entree. I had the Misto Mare (this included calamari, clams, shrimp, with a choice of sauce and pasta...I had clam sauce and fettuccine). It was delicious! They had these tasty fried squash blossoms on the side of the plate...yummy. This is a family-run business. I remember when the children used to serve us water and bring our silverware. It's still family... so they are not open all winter as they travel to the south. Call to find out days/times they are open....be prepared to eat a lot....and to be blown away by the food! Family run, dad in the kitchen, daughters greeting and waiting on customers, mom doing everything. Only open in the Spring - early Fall as they family winters over in Florida. You walk in and are facing the kitchen. Entrees are labeled and you can see what you will be eating. A display of available wines is to your left and then you are seated. They do a good job and dad occasionally experiments with new recipes, but for the most part the menu stays the same. But it is good and you will enjoy it. read more

What a unique spot. They are reservation only, and only open three nights a week. You are greeted upon arrival with a taste of wine to enjoy while you review tonight's menu offerings hand written above the kitchen window where you can see everything being plated. You then are escorted over to review the bread and wine options (only one wine by the glass, but good prices on bottles and decent selection) before being seated at your table. We ordered the spinach gnocchi appetizer, meatballs with fettuccine alfredo, and the veal milanese. Everything was cooked perfectly and quite tasty. I felt the cream sauces were a bit overly heavy but still enjoyable. My husband was slightly disappointed that the milanese was an unconventional presentation, but he loved his pasta and the veal was still tasty. We were too full for dessert but it looked wonderful. Overall, a lovely experience and we would certainly return. read more

The complaint reviews astonish me as we have always had great food and excellent service. Sometimes I wonder if the people who complain so loudly are from "the big city" (wherever that may be) and expect something entirely different. Marie's has always provided great food and service so it is difficult for me to understand critics. As usual we look forward to their reopening this year. read more

Marie's is our favorite restaurant hands down, anywhere USA. Forget the snobby remarks for those who think more highly of themselves and would rather berate this wonderful family for their service. Are you kidding me, the food is amazing and Mike knows Italian. This family has been in this family business for generations. We have been going there for 15 years and still consistently great food. We recently went to Marie's for a business dinner. We'd heard great things about the food so we were all excited to try it. The food I would describe as good, but not great. The wine selection is abbreviated but nice. The service was just okay. We went for long periods of time with no attention from our waitress, and her demeanor made us feel like we were a bit of an inconvenience to have around. The major annoyance was they do not accept credit cards, cash or check only. This is their choice to operate this way, even if I think it is a bit silly. They should however make an effort to let new patrons now this as soon as you make the reservation. They have a tiny note taped in the window of the front door that we didn't notice walking in warning of this unusual policy which is easily overlooked. As it turned out, we were embarrassed to allow the guests we had invited to dinner to pay with a check because we were unprepared to pay the significant check in cash. read more

This is possibly the best Italian food I've ever had. I've never been to Italy, so I know I have a gap in my education there, but I can safely say that I've had plenty of big-city Italian from good neighborhoods and this place takes the cake. What a treat to find Marie's right off the dang highway. In an unassuming brick building is this restaurant, a family affair cheffed by the husband, who literally cooks everything himself. The wife makes the breads and desserts. It's basically like going to somebody's house, only the house is decorated in charming off-kilter strip mall pastels and the chef's daughter is serving you your meal. Fantastic breads lead into monumental meals chock-full of freshly made pastas, lovely fresh seafood, flavorful meats and excellent, hearty sauces. A combination plate basically gets you enough food to tide you over for several days. My favorite involves a homemade meatball the size of my head, excellent homemade gnocchi (always a treat - I can spot frozen gnocchi a mile away!) and big tasty prawns. Their wine selection, carefully curated, is also excellent. Desserts are always home-cooked and I have had beautiful tarts and nice tiramisu here. Seriously - I cannot say enough what a joy Marie's has been. It may seem like it's in the middle of nowhere, but believe me, it's somewhere! read more

This place was fantastic. My wife and I went here with anouther couple and had a great meal. This was our first time here and is usally packed so make sure you make reservations. When you walk in you can go over to the menu which is on a board over the chefs kitchen and gives you the chance to see him in the middle of preparing meals. Next you go towards the dining room and pass the counter which is full of freshly baked breads and further down are the desserts. We sat down and I ordered a bottle of red wine which was reasonably priced along with 2 appetizers, Gnocci and calamari, both of which were excellent. While waiting for the appetizers we ordered our main courses, pasta with meatballs, 2 shrimp with pasta and a chefs combo platter with various items. Meatballs and marinera, shrimp was large and tender and combo platter with its various items along with all the pasta was cooked perfectly with no complaints, unlike other so called Italian restraunts in Missoula and Florence(YOU KNOW WHICH ONES). We were stuffed so we just ordered one desert, tiramasu (spelling, I know) which was the only item I can ding this meal on, I have made and had much better, maybe if they didn't put regular chocolate chips on top it would of been a little better. All in all it was a great meal and the total bill for 4 was 114 plus a tip, not bad at all. I will come back here again when I'm craving Italian food. read more

The food is quite good for a Montana Italian restaurant. The prices are reasonable. The operation could be improved, though. The set-up is more like a lunch counter than a fine dining restaurant. The menu is on the wall as you come in, and you are to read it and make your choice before being seated at your table. The same goes for appetizers and wine. For a nice dinner out, I would prefer to be seated first and peruse the menu at my table. The parking area is inadequate. On a personal note, we were late for our reservation. I completely understand the restaurant staff being upset about this. In their shoes, I would be upset. However, we felt rushed and unwelcome as a result of their interactions with us. Even though we were late, a more professional staff would still make us feel welcome. All in all, I will give it another try and hope for better service next time. read more

Walked out of this place not knowing what just happened. The food was great and the bill wasn't cheap. BUT it didn't feel like we were by any means appreciated for coming in. You look at the menu next to the cooks window and don't ask the chef for any recommendation because he is pissed at life. There is just a grumpy negative vibe the whole time your in there, and it seems like they are annoyed with you if you ask for anything. I was warned the owner/chef is a piece of work but I just don't get why you would return to a place that treats you the way they do, no matter how the food is. read more

We try to visit Marie's every time we are up in Stevensville. They simply have the best Italian food I have ever tasted! Everything is homemade and you can taste the love in each of the dishes. The bread his freshly baked too. They also have a nice wine selection which is reasonably priced. Service is always very friendly. I would be here every weekend if I lived full time in the area! I am shocked to hear of rude service as we have been coming to this place for the past 4 years and have NEVER had rude service and the food has ALWAYS been excellent. It isn't the most kid friendly place but I can't imagine the staff being rude to anyone there. Will continue to go there. read more

This place is an excellent hidden gem! Looking at the ambience and building I would have never expected the great variety of Italian dishes inside. Everything is made in house including a great variety of breads, desserts and soups! I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted to eat when my boyfriend's family took me there. I had a delicious seafood soup that night accompanied by some great breads! My main entree was the chef's special which included some killer pasta, an insane gnocchi ball, prawns and a rissotto stuffed zucchini. Needless to say, I had a lot to take home, but the leftovers were just as yummy! read more

I had heard really good things about this restaurant from people and saw the great reviews online so I was really looking forward to making the trek from Missoula down to Stevi for dinner. Pros - The staff is very friendly. The lighting is nice. You do not feel rushed for dinner. It was easy to converse with who you were with because it is not loud in there. Great House salad dressing. Cons - Bring cash. If you want to use a credit card they will charge you a 5% fee of your total bill cost. Seriously! When I made a comment that if we had known in advance I would have brought more cash. The waitress actually said to me "It is on our answering machine." Are we in the 1980's? When I called there they answered the phone. I didn't hear an answering machine. So why didn't the person who made the reservation disclose this handy bit of info? I had been to their FB page and on Yelp and hadn't seen any info about it. So I am posting about it at least. Another con is their food overall. Neither of us actually thought it was anything like the reviews we were stating. Neither of recommend anything with their spaghetti sauce. It is not good. We ordered the calamari and it was covered in it. Who smoothers calamari with sauce. If you don't like it you are screwed and that was the case here. I had ordered the angel hair pasta with my veal. So I immediately changed to the fettucini alfredo. Well that wasn't much of an improvement. Tasted pretty generic. Nothing special. As far as beer selection goes. My boyfriend described it best. There is Country and there is Western. So very few choices. Location - As you are pulling into Stevi on that stretch of road before you get to the light you will see this place on the east side of the road. It is very easy to miss. Using your maps (at least ours did) led us past it and then wanted us to turn around ahead and come back again. Thankfully we saw it before we did all of that crazy U-Turn stuff. Easily 5 stars!!! This isn't just a restaurant it's an epicurean adventure!!!! First you select your entrée and appetizer, as you stand at the chefs window, so he can answer any questions . Next you choose what type of bread you want from small gourmet loaves, French bread twists and three types of focaccia. Then you pass the wine selection where the waitress, who was very wine savvy, helps you choose the perfect bottle! Then it's on to your table in the lovely dining room. Once seated you inform your server of the choices you have made for your meal. The wine was tasted and it was a nice smooth Italian red as described. We chose the spinach and mushroom stuffed Gnocchi in Marssla cream and the lamb tortellini. Both were fantastic! Our bread choices were the French twists and Kalamata olive focaccia. Really great bread! I had a lovely Italian salad and everyone else had seafood bisque. The entrées we chose were calamari, veal and the chefs sampler. All entrées were served with a choice of pasta side and green beans! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Right Down to the green beans!!! We ended our meal by sharing a fruit tart and the most amazing tiramisu any of us had ever tasted!! The service was very attentive and wonderful! Our server was the daughter of the owner/chef. She was delightful as she explained, as we raved, that most of the recipes were her Grandmother's recipes!! What a great surprise in a small town! If you like being able to talk with the chef, receive great customer service, and eat very good Italian food, this is your place. I learned they have been there 34 years (which is really saying something) and it is family run. The owner is the chef and he was delightful to talk with and learn about the selections for the evening. They change their menu daily. Definitely a different concept you can read about in other reviews, but fun and refreshing. Food is great and prices are very fair for the quality of food. I highly recommend Marie's if you like unique experiences and quiet dining with great customer service. read more

After having read all the rave reviews on Marie's my wife and I took some friends for dinner at Maries and I can honestly say....it was okay. Maybe it's just me, but when I'm dining out I expect certain things. A menu for example, salad forks and food that is at least warm. Price was very reasonable, and the food was good, but not great. The waitress was short with us when we tried to pay her and she directed us to "one of them". This was the first time any of us in the group had been to Marie's, and to be honest it was probably our last time as well. read more

Fabulous food! I love Italian and while I've been to many Italian restaurants in missoula and surrounding areas I keep returning to Maries...it's my #1. It's small and dated decor, service has been nothing to shout about (but far from rude), but the food is fantastic. Will keep choosing Marie's for my Italian fix. read more

When it's time to share a true dining experence with a loved one it is" Maries". For years now I have have the pleasure of introducing friends to this Bitterroot treasure . We went to Marie's for the second time on May 06, 2016. Let me start by saying my calamari on angel hair was excellent. The bread and desert selection is outstanding in the way they present it and it was delicious. The salad was also excellent. The entree prices are very reasonable. The chef/ owner is delightful and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. Now the bad news. My wife's entree was lukewarm and mushy so it must have sat too long; this is the second time she's experienced this problem. Our server, who I believe is the daughter of the owner, was impatient, unfriendly and contrarian, and not just to us; I observed how she was interacting with other customers. I asked her to leave 2 pieces of shrimp off of my wife's entree and simply put it on my plate and she refused. I wasn't asking her to invade Russia in winter but you would have thought I was. When we left she was standing at a counter facing us and said nothing, uhh, like "thank you". I intentionally waited until we walked past her just to see if she'd acknowledge us; she didn't so at a couple of steps beyond her I spoke up and only then did she bid us goodnight. So with the combo of strike 2 on half of the dinner and the lack of a warm dining experience we won't be returning to Marie's. read more

Our experience at Marie's was disappointing. We experienced a meal that at every turn was filled with disappointment and negativity. These proprieters put themselves first and they're clientele last. We went to celebrate a 75th birthday, but were not allowed to push our tables together because it was inconvenient for the servers. When presented with an idea that it wasn't about them, but rather, about the person who was celebrating the 75th birthday, the retort from the waitress was, "Well, the person that made the reservation was aware of what the rules were." We were also told that we could not share a meal because "they take reservations." (Whatever that means - I guess other restaurants don't take reservations like these people do.) Interestingly enough, for parties of six or more, there's an automatic 20% gratuity added to your check. Of this, we were charged for sure, but we weren't allowed to sit together. We sat at two separate tables of four!!!! To cap off the evening, while paying with a credit card, we were told nonchalantly that there would be a 5% addition for using a charge card. Oh my! These people think they're pretty awesome. If you wanna be treated like crap, go for it. The food was good, but not that good. Buyer beware. read more

The food was excellent. Fortunately we did not experience the rude behavior that other reviewers did. The scallops were exceptional and so was the spaghetti and meatballs. They have a variety of homemade italian specialty breads to choose from that were outstanding. You get an opportunity to pass by them while being escorted to your table. As far as authentic Italian goes in and around Missoula, this place is as good as I've found. The food and service are wonderful; everything is always cooked to perfection. I recommend any veal option on the menu or the chef's special, which never disappoints. Well. What can I say? Italian food in Montana. If I'm honest, the chef cooked the food to the perfect texture. The shrimp were not too firm, nor were they undercooked. Same with everything else. So, the guy knows how to cook, right? But...what's with the cream? I ingested more cream in one meal at Marie's than I have in all my years as a kid or an Italian. I just don't get it. Clams with white cream...Not so good. Olive oil, lemon, basil equals good. White cream...not so much. My companion's dish had the exact same cream sauce! We had the sampler, and the red sauce was actually pretty tasty, but it too had a trace of cream in it. The other food on the sampler was covered in white cream sauce. It wasn't even spiced really. I hate to insult Montanans, because they really don't have any large cultural cities. The food at Marie's couldn't be served in 90 percent of Chicago. Except for the bread. It was pretty good! The wine selection is pretty good, but it's not spectacular. It does have some good values. We're just passing through, and this restaurant was recommended to us. We'll have to try something else next time we're in Montana, because it was really just not good, just very filling. Sorry. read more
