Debra was also very helpful in answering all of our questions about the area and with giving us recommendations of activities, restaurants, and wineries. You can stay in here with advance reservations and be right next-door to Ralphies house from the fabulous movie, a Christmas story. there are sure to be barking dogs inside, but I'm sure they're not real. What a fabulous place to stay if you are in Cleveland and a super fan of the movie. The area around it has the Christmas story house, the Christmas story museum, and the Christmas story gift shop which I think was my favorite part of this trip. If you are in town, don't forget to stay in the Bumpus house.

I was visiting the hotel for an event (Sounds of the Land) so my only visit was to the lobby and downstairs restaurant (Club Room). The lobby was extremely comfy and modern. I can absolutely see relaxing here or catching up on work. Although the lobby is very constrained in terms of space and gets loud. CLUB ROOM: I visited the Club Room, a restaurant by the lobby. I really enjoyed the drinks - bold, well crafted, and generously boozy. The food was less exciting, too salty and subpar. The Club Room hosts plenty of events - holiday dinners, opening sports days, and music. The space quickly gets packed. PARKING: Valet is available onsite. Plenty of parking garages are accessible in the area. I recommend dropping in for an event at the hotel and drinks. You can register on Eventbrite for select events. Plus, they are a pet friendly hotel and don't charge anything extra to bring your furry friend! We booked a standard king room. We had an easy check-in experience where we signed a short waiver related to having our dog on site, and then headed up to our room on the fourth floor, which was beautifully furnished. The room is color drenched in a dark burgundy and features artful touches throughout, including an antique-looking vanity mirror and a mahogany hutch that contains robes, a safe, a refrigerator, and a mini-bar / coffee service. There were a few things I would tweak to make it a 5-star hotel in by book: first is eliminating the blinking green light on the fire alarm, which was bright enough and frequent enough to disrupt our sleep. Second is having a bedside table on both sides of the bed. Third would be offering ear plugs. We were not significantly disturbed by being downtown, but it is situated in a busy area of the city and this would be a nice touch for guests who are more sound sensitive. Overall, we had a fantastic time and would definitely stay here again. The on-site bar & restaurant is fantastic and the proximity to explore the rest of downtown is unmatched.

We also had the steak frites and the rigatoni at the table, both of which were enjoyed and were large portions. One of my only complaints was that I was charged for a diet coke refill without realizing I would be charged for it. If I had realized that I would have stuck to one. AMBIANCE: Club Room is attached to the lobby seating. As you enter the hotel, you'll walk right into the lobby and to the restaurant. The restaurant occupies multiple rooms - bar with adjacent dining room, dining room with sophisticated floral wallpaper, and back private dining space. The restaurant looks like it's from the pages of interior decor magazine - velvet seating, tasteful decor, moody lighting, lots of natural light, and gorgeous peeks of downtown. It gives contemporary vibes. The layout of the restaurant is awkward, it's like one long corridor. Since it's adjacent to the lobby it gets very loud during busy times and during special events. I was overwhelmed by the number of people during my visit. It's also quite complex to find the restrooms. One has to travel to floor one (lobby is not on the first floor), and navigate to the restroom. It seems like a lot of unnecessary effort. FOOD/DRINKS: I ordered Bonner Farm's Steak Frites ($50) which is steak and fries. I was really looking forward to tasting a meal here and did not like the food. I asked for medium meat preparation, it was well done, tasted too overcooked. The entire meal was drowning in salt - salt on the steak, too much salt on the fries. I love salt but it was excessive even for me. I wish that salt wasn't added and could be optional. I wouldn't order this dish again. Although I must say it was good for a hotel meal. The prep time was also very long but the restaurant was very busy so it's understandable. I ordered Polar Negroni ($18) and Spirit of Short Vincent ($20). Drinks were very well crafted and very strong. I really enjoyed them. The latter drink even had a wildflower. I was a huge fan of the drinks, and highly recommend them. If you're spirit free, your option is to add ritual free spirit. Speaking from experience, usually substituting alcohol ingredients with spirit free doesn't work as well as creating special mocktails. All this to say is I'd love to see spirit free menu. Happy Hour here is early, ends before 4 PM. Verify hours before you go. SERVICE: The service was very attentive, immediate, and welcoming. It was obvious that employees also got along with each other and empower each other. I appreciated feeling welcome and thanked for my visit even during peak busy hours. EVENTS: The hotel has been hosting events - Easter, opening day, Thanksgiving, and other special dinners that require reservations. More recently, they started hosting Sounds of the Land music series with local artists and various music genres. I also learned that there will be a summer series. Keep in mind that the concerts draw a huge crowd. Arrive early if you want to get seats in the lobby (next to the musicians) or in the restaurant. PARKING: Valet is available onsite. If you are in need of rest and relaxation, plus, a 'back to nature' experience, we thoroughly recommend renting this 1950's Frank Lloyd Wright designed property. It was a great retreat for us. The home is retro, and given its age, appointed well enough. Actually, we were quite surprised by how comfy the beds were, as well as the nicely designed main bathroom. We've stayed in older F.L.W. designed homes, and have felt much less comfortable! Self-catering is possible, there are electric stove tops, but, there is no oven for baking or roasting. The home is stocked with everything you need to put together simple meals in style and enjoy the architecture and nature the property affords. There is a lovely deck, but, we couldn't utilize it because it was a bit too cold and wet when we visited; this would be great to dine and lounge on during summer months! What we liked most about the experience, besides checking out F.L.W.'s architecture, were the sweeping views from the large high-ceilinged living and dining room area. Inside, it felt like we were actually sitting in a forest! From the living room, from sunrise thru sunset, we could easily see deer grazing about slowly yet cautiously, beautifully and gracefully for our eyes. We viewed countless cardinals, blue jays, hawks and many other bird species, enriching the experience. There are many hiking trails on the property, and just up the road at Gully Brook Park, where we encountered more deer on our peaceful walks through the valley. Lastly, the town of Willoughby Hills itself has a decent coffee shop, numerous restaurants and bars, as well as grocery stores and wine shops, to make a stay at Penfield House most enjoyable.

Beautifully maintained, comfy and historic. We arrived and spent our first night by the fire playing games and snacking on charcuterie. An easy deal since the house is fully furnished and usable, including the firewood. Loved the ambiance and the warm vibe. You can tell it was a happy home filled with great memories. Browsing through the guest book there are many returnees each year. Sarah, the current owner, was awesome. When the power went out the first morning she and her family kept checkin up on us. We were great though, even without electricity! We built and kept the fore going, made French Press coffee and cooked on the gas stove lighting it with a lighter. There was hot water from the gas water heater so showers were had and everyone was happy. We spent the second night much like the first, games, good food (braised slow cooked short ribs over mashers and garlicky spinach) and lots of great wine, all by candle light and the warmth of the fire. It was "glamping" at its finest! Sadly, the power was not restored until after we left, but we still had a terrific time and plan on returning to enjoy the home, the hiking on the property and the Chagrin River. Highly recommend this great historic rental!
