I have complete faith in Dr. Amitabh Bharadwaj, my retina specialist and the founder of Marin Retina. His training is first class: he attended Harvard for his undergraduate education, medical school, and internship, and later completed a fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, one of the very best eye hospitals in the country. He is also on the faculty at UCSF and has more than 25 years of experience. I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have been referred to him when I was diagnosed with macular degeneration. Simply put, he saved my eyesight, which was quickly going downhill. He started treatment at my very first appointment, and not only did my eyes stabilize, they actually returned to their previous condition, which, as I understand it, is highly unusual. Dr. Bharadwaj stays current with cutting-edge research and has been an investigator in numerous clinical trials. But what makes him especially wonderful is the amazing person he is. He has a calm demeanor, is always happy to answer questions, and is warm, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. I have complete confidence in his judgment and expertise. The waiting room is not luxurious, and it is usually packed with patients. But believe me, a short wait is more than worth it when you are seeing someone with the expertise to protect your eyesight. I have posted a review of this medical practice under the name of the owner/physician himself, Dr. Amitabh K. Bharadwaj, but wanted to repeat it here. Dr. B is a very experienced, very skilled retina specialist. We had an upsetting event at an early appointment, but Dr. B stepped right up and made it right. Rather than listening to my complaint, the other eye doctor w whom I discussed the situation became angry, verbally abusive and left the room with me in tears. Dr. B had the exact opposite reaction. He listened carefully to my remarks, apologized for any part he may have played in the occurrence and treated me with the respect and attention any patient should have from their doctors. I give Dr. B the highest marks and would recommend him to anyone with difficult vision problems with no reservation. I would add that his treatment of my eye disease has met with positive results as my vision has improved under his care. read more

I came here blind in one eye from a torn retina thanks to the incompetence of another retina specialist in Marin who could not properly diagnose or treat my macular degeneration. Dr. Bharadwaj is an expert in his field and highly respected around the country. One look at his degrees and you will see he was educated at the top institutions in the world. Based on all of the amazing reviews I am shocked that I had such a terrible experience. My ophthalmologist referred me to Dr. Bharadwaj after diagnosing me with macular degeneration. My appointment was at 3:15 and he was running late which was not an issue, other than the fact that at 5 PM I was still in his office and felt like he wanted to leave. He didn't seem to want to answer my questions and left before even looking at my eye after the injection to see if it had hemorrhaged (which it did). He never explained what he was injecting into my eye or other options. This was all new and very upsetting information to hear that I was losing vision in my right eye and need shots in my eyes monthly. He showed no empathy and was very doom and gloom.   More disturbing is that gave me incorrect medical information! He told me that my vision would never get better and the best case was keeping it from progressing further. I have since found out that many people get back improved vision with injections so there is some hope and that should have been communicated. And since my right eye has traditionally been my stronger eye, I also asked him specifically if my left weak eye was a candidate for contacts and he said they were not, but my optometrist confirmed that is not true, as there are astigmatic lenses. Nor did he share any news about promising new treatments in trials such as gene therapy or the option for the new longer lasting injections. Because I had so many questions that I didn't feel I had a chance to ask, I called the office the next morning. His assistant Rachel took down all my questions and said she would get back to me. This was a Friday and she never got back to me so I reached out end of day and she said she gave him my questions but he hadn't gotten back to her yet. So he left me hanging all weekend long, and by Monday, he still not did not respond, which is inexcusable, so I wrote an email with my frustrations and found a new MD.. He finally called back Tuesday and blamed his assistant for not relaying information and tried to justify his behavior and misinformation and never apologized. He said he misunderstood my question about contacts, which just meant that he wasn't listening to me and said he didn't share that some people can get improved vision as he didn't want to give me false hope. I just went to my new retinal specialist, Dr Judy Chen and could not believe the difference in the information, care and bedside manner. She explained everything calmly and clearly, did not rush me and offered different kinds of injections that have worked better than the one I had previously received and told me about some promising trials and thinks she can vastly improve my vision! My vision has already improved from a combination of red light therapy and the injection. Dr Chen isn't even certain that I have wet AMD- I may have another similar retinal condition that has a much better prognosis! And not only did I not bleed with her injection, but my eye is not even bothering me after all the numbing wore off, unlike last time where my eye felt scratched and sore. Night and day experience and I would never recommend Marin Retina to anybody! Truly horrible experience. read more

I have seen 4 Board Certified retina specialists; two in Marin and two in Palm Springs area. Dr. Bhardadwaj is fabulous. He explains everything in detail, he is extremely patient , very courteous, never rushed, and always has time to answer any and all questions you have. I was with him for about a year and half before it became necessary to get the shot in the eye for my wet retinal problem. He had never before tried to talk me into getting a shot I didn't need. There was no doubt in my mind that my bad eye had changed and needed the shot at that time as I realized my vision had changed from the last appointment. Dr. B did the exam, did the scan and said I should have the shot; there is no pain at all with it as he is very gentle and numbs the area first, the shot itself takes about 2 seconds. His office staff is very efficient and friendly and Dr. B is always available if you need him. Only once during the 3 or so years I've seen him was he not on time, and that was because he had had emergency patients which is certainly understandable--- if I have an emergency eye issue I would want him to take me ahead of regularly scheduled patients. He is extremely professional and knowledgeable and very highly credentialed. The other retina specialist I saw in Marin was in a hurry, he didn't explain anything and worse yet, before he gave me a shot he simply handed me an electronic consent pad to sign which had absolutely nothing whatsoever on it stating what I was consenting to and he did not state anything to me about the particular injection or anything that the electronic signature pertained to. Only after I was leaving the office when I asked what was the consent pad was about was I handed a form explaining what I had consented to. Dr. Bharadwaj is fabulous, as are his medical assistants David and Jackie, as well as the front desk. Dr. Bharadwaj is my favorite Marin ophthalmologist, and I've worked with many local ocular physicians after having ocular surgery at age 5. He called me back almost immediately when I called the Marin Retina emergency line on the weekend. He was the first ophthalmologist that was willing to fit me in immediately, and I couldn't be more grateful that it was he who extended me this grace. Even on the phone when I was in pain and very scared, he had a calming energy and patiently gave me home care instructions, and assured me he would see me first thing on Monday, even though he had a completely full patient schedule in his clinic. In the past year I have had persistent vision issues and have visited with several other ophthalmologists, and he was so markedly superior in how thorough he was in his examination, and how open, kind and gentle he was in his approach. He was incredibly patient and tender given my circumstances, and was willing to listen, as well as indulge my requests for him to do second passes in areas of concern. That blew me away. It is so rare in today's day and age to find a medical practice that really puts patients' needs first. I had a terrible scare, when my eye suddenly had a peripheral light show and learned it could be a torn retina. Marin Retina was able to accommodate me the next day, warning me I'd have a bit of a wait--fair enough-- but everyone was professional, kind and compassionate throughout my visit. Dr. B was very impressive, using state of the art technology to assess my situation, and requiring me to return in 6 weeks as a follow up. (No torn retina so far, phew!!) When the vision in my left eye suddenly decreased right after Christmas, my regular ophthalmologist was out of town and I was referred to Dr. B's office. They fit me in right away. Dr. Bharadwaj saved my dad's eyesight! 3 years ago we turned to Marin Retina with a diagnosis, where other doctors were recommending surgery. However, Dr. B assured us that a course eye injection treatments would be enough to contain dad's ailment. After 1 year his eye looked much better and now, 2 years later he only need to see the doctor for checkups. Finally we have a really good retinal specialist in the North Bay area. I saw Dr Bharadwaj 2/20 on the request of my regular doctor for distortions that were a combination of a worsening of a long-term pattern and damage caused by a previous retinal surgery which together were endangering my ability to drive safely. Suffice it to say I have a long and complicated history. Dr. Bharadwaj took the time to review the thick files I had brought with me, gave careful examination to both eyes using very up to date equipment and was able to give me the relieving opinion that at my age surgery would not really be that helpful, but the problem could really be alleviated by frequent (6-7 times a day) use of artificial tears. He explained things carefully, clearly and fully to me in a manner that felt respectful and answered all my questions fully. So grateful to find this degree of knowledge, background and compassion after previous unhappy experiences. A quick glance at his education, training and credentials will also be reassuring if you are considering trusting such an important health concern to him.
