Old Oakland and Oakland Chinatown are just a few blocks away. Lots of small places to eat here, although most are closed during the weekend. You can tell this is a major lunch area during the week for businesses located here and the surrounding area. I think if they promoted this place a little better, it has the potential to be a very popular place, mostly because it is so aesthetically pleasing!!

I don't know anything about the history of that redevelopment--it's from the 1950s, so it was probably bad--this is just my take on the mall. Between 2003 and 2006, when I was still relatively new to the Bay Area and to riding BART, this place would have garnered four stars. I was in high school and college in the 1990s, and everything about this place screamed '90s, from the public art to the fountain to the fun multiple levels. A legitimately outdoor mall that descends underground yet still has plenty of sunlight and open space? Sign me up!--or at at least, I'll eat my lunch here! And I did. I had an internship nearby one summer, and I ate lunch here pretty often, and when that was over and I worked seasonally at UC Berkeley, I would often stop here on the way home and visit La Salsa--remember La Salsa? The memories of those mid-aughts days still make me smile, like playing Street Fighter III: Third Strike. I also used the FedEx Office (then called FedEx Kinko's) a few times for work and grad school. The mall itself is still remarkably clean, but it's also hugely depressing because there are so few businesses left. Go to their website right now. The three categories listed are dining, services, and shopping. There are a few dining and services options remaining, but there is a single shopping option: Walgreens. That's right; in this entire mall, the only place you can buy a non-food-related gift for someone else is a drugstore. I can't say that the mall ever felt terribly crowded, but when I would come here during the day, there were people eating at the tables and sitting on the benches and walking around. Its proximity to BART* should guarantee it lots of business, but alas, I guess enough people are still working from home that businesses just can't survive here. It's a shame, too, because it really is a nice space. Online shopping really has reduced social interactions with strangers and has ruined social cohesion in many ways. *The 12th Street/Oakland City Center BART Station has an exit right into the lowest part of Oakland City Center.

Jack London Square is one of my favorite places to slow down and enjoy the day. There are great…read morerestaurants and cafés, a pet store, a candy shop, and a store for water sports and outdoor gear. It's also just a short walk to World Market, a nearby movie theater, and downtown Oakland. If you're driving, there's a convenient parking garage. What I love most is that you don't have to spend any money to enjoy yourself. You can sit under the trees, watch the boats, stretch out on the grass, listen to live music, and simply enjoy the waterfront. The square itself is pedestrian-friendly, so you can relax without traffic rushing by. Sundays are especially enjoyable with the farmers market and live performances. Today I'm listening to the talented musicians from the Oaktown Jazz Workshops, who also have a home right here in Jack London Square. Every now and then, you'll hear a train passing by, which somehow adds to the character of the place. I'm really going to miss The Plank. It was such a fun community gathering spot and a place where I often came just to unwind. Another bonus is the free shuttle from Alameda, which makes getting here easy and enjoyable. Whether you're looking for a meal, a movie, a waterfront stroll, or simply a peaceful no cost place to sit and recharge, Jack London Square is well worth a visit.

As you drive into Alameda on Webster Street from the Tube, it will be on the leftside. It was built in 1984, and features a Walgreens as it's anchor store. Other businesses are: Starbucks, Taco Bell, Levy's Bagels, and FedEx Office. The Walgreens is pretty important since all of the private pharmacies on Webster St are gone now. People would have to travel to Marina Village or Alameda Landing for nearby Rx services. I seldom shop here, since I don't shop at Walgreens or get coffee at Starbucks. Late at night, I would see people in pickup trucks either doing illegal dumping or going thru the dumpsters at this shopping center. They sometimes leave a mess. Otherwise, the parking lot is pretty clean. FUN FACT: This is the former site of the original Skippy Peanut Butter Plant. Yes! All you old-time Alameda residents know this already. Atlantic Ave & Webster St used to be the site of the "old peanut butter plant." Technically it was called the Rosefield Packing Company. It's considered one of the most successful businesses to originate in Alameda. Discovered Tesla charging stations "hidden" in the rear of the center, see picture. I have to admit, when we did NOT know better approximately 20 years ago, we used to come here often. But the environment has changed, and not for the better. Way busier, more car break-ins, more poor drivers, etc. And really no brands that I personally shop. Plus, we now have the Livermore outlets! Which is still my favorite! Atmosphere - 23 businesses, see website. Crazy busy on weekends. Limited parking. Potential car break-ins; see parking lot signs. And I like it because I don't have to do long walks from one store to another. It has 3 food places, which include Starbucks. It's a closer outlet and it's not crowded. My type of outlet.
