I had called multiple outboard repair shops, and luckily most weren't terribly responsive. The first time I spoke with Bill at Marine Outboard, I knew I had found the right place. My engine had been underwater from the prior owner, and it was not looking promising. Bill was very upfront about the fact that he would try to "put himself in my shoes" and figure out if it was possible to repair. He took a very thoughtful approach to what he would do to assess whether it was able to be fixed before digging in much further. He was very conscious of not having me spend too much if it wasn't able to be fixed. I was amazed and very pleased when Bill called to let me know that the engine was back to running. Not only this but it now starts first pull, and runs like a top, I have to imagine as good or better than it did new. But to be honest and fair I have to say I was so impressed by this one man shop that I have to give him 5 stars. Well I have to give him five stars because they don't go higher. Bill is a dedicated Master Mechanic, He has always been ethical and straight forward, He took in my New used Nissan 5hp 2 stroke lemon I bought off a Crook on Craigslist, claiming it was in excellent condition ,It started 1st pull without water, claiming it was just a waterpump -Not- head was plugged full of Corrosion , required a teardown and rebuild-Bill made the motor better than new, Wasn't cheap but he turned it around with all new stainless parts from an expensive anchor to a robust fully operational machine. read more

Brought my wreck of a 1990s Mariner 9.9 hp to Bill because my buddy told me he was the man. Bill resuscitated my motor into a like-new, one-pull, no-questions-asked experience. He also cleaned the inside and out, fixed some funky shifting stuff, adjusted my once-funky handle, PAINTED THE MID-SECTION AND LOWER UNIT, and gave her a name. I took her out 5-6 times and then I tweaked the shifter again. He took it back no questions asked and fixed it for free. Unanimous 5-star reviews for this type of labor is unheard of because WAY more people like to complain about wrenchwork than compliment it. Bill was great. I had an old motor I was trying to get rid of for my dad that has been sitting in a garage for 10 years. Bill was able to explain what he was going to do to fix, how long it would take, and what the price estimate would be. About a week later I came back to pick up the motor and he even put his stamp of approval on it. He also recommended places where I could sell it and let me put up a little flyer in his shop to help sell the motor. He really cares about his work and the customer. Fantastic work. Bill defines service. He did the little things that make such a difference. I bought a Nissan 6 HP off the internet and it was running poorly. Bill recommended that I use the warranty (which I had not realized), fixed the engine to perfection, plus he cleaned the outside of the engine and repaired my engine dolly holder (which I had installed incorrectly). He might be a good mechanic I really don't know. I called him once on a Tuesday to describe the problem with my engine and ask when I might be able to drop it off given I work during the week, he told me they would be open on Sat until noon if I wanted to drop it off. I called back on Thursday to confirm the Sat hours and let him know I would be coming by to drop off the engine. I took the motor off and drove 45 minutes from the east bay over there and get there at 11:30am and the place was closed! No one around, I called the phone number and no one picked up so I drove 45 minutes back and it took me another week to find someone else to take a look at it. I work more than a full time job so my weekend time is the most valuable thing I have and for him to waste an hour and a half after I confirmed the hours and would be bringing it by is not ok. Also my favorite thing to do on the weekend is boat and this put my boat out of commission another week because I had to find someone else to do it. I also left him a message when I called and he wasn't around with all my information, it's been more than a week now and he never called me back, never tried to make it right or even acknowledge he screwed up. My absolute professional pet-peeve is when someone doesn't do what they say their going to do so I have to give this place 0 stars for service and reliability.... sorry read more

If you live within 100 miles of Bill's shop, you'd be making a mistake taking your outboard anywhere else. Yes, he doesn't always pick up the phone. Yes, he doesn't have an online presence. And yes, his shop isn't a sterile laboratory. But, if he has your outboard for repair, you will get it back running like it just rolled off the factory line. This man displays the knowledge, temperance, skill and patience to correctly and efficiently fix all outboard motors. And he's a really nice guy to converse with. If you have questions, Bill will answer them. I called a few other shops trying to get an idea of what to do with a submerged motor and all I got was "If you want motor repair advice, we have to start the clock on the billing hours." Get Bill on the phone and you'll never hear those words. Bill has been servicing my outboards for years, but more recently I took him a Yamaha 15HP engine that had been submerged in salt water. For most engines, this is a death sentence if not worked on ASAP. Bill did his magic and had the motor running as new in no time. He also changed the impeller and cleaned the motor top to bottom.
