Parking in her spot for the 6 weeks
    Melissa V.

For context, we live aboard, so we lived at KKMI for 6 weeks. TL;DR: read Lessons if you don't have time or appetite for details. We recently purchased a 1967 65' steel trawler & hauled out at KKMI for bottom paint. Referred to KKMI by MiRoPo Marine, our PM Bob was described as committed, reliable & easy to work with. Truth in advertising. He also listens, is fun, funny & has great hair. We got a great vibe at haulout. Bob & team met us on the dock, & explained what to expect. Jose's leadership made us comfortable as possible during the nail biting process of hanging 72 tons, then setting her on her keel on wooden blocks *we had a 3.9 quake just 22 miles away - they clearly know their stuff! Lesson #1: Check the vibe at haulout. Their work is the riskiest & most critical in setting tone for the yard period. Lesson #2: If you can be flexible with how long you can be out, they can balance staffing demands, you'll save money & gratefully, if you're waiting on the yard, you aren't charged those lay days to work on your boat. Our plan was bottom paint, new transducer & paint touch-ups topsides. Bob shared his honest concern about the many touch-ups we were pointing out, because it's nearly impossible to manage sun damage for a perfect match. No pressure to repaint from Bob - we decided on a repaint and color change. Lesson #3: Communicate with your PM. Ask questions, be transparent about expectations, & listen. Bob knows the industry inside & out. Bob made sure we understood the general rules of the yard (no welding or spray painting & stay safe) then referred us to Michele for amenities (wifi, bathrooms, after hours access, etc.) The on-site ship's store, fabricator, carpentry & rigging shop, make KKMI the most professional, well-rounded operation we've experienced. Decades learning what boat owners need, & investing in their facilities & people has created a welcoming, safe environment. Lesson #3:. Explore, ask questions, & get to know the team. It makes a huge difference in how you experience the yard. We communicated clearly with Bob about our desire for sweat equity - saving time & money & learning about our boat - he paired us with painter René Martinez. Working with René was a master class on steel paint prep. He's well versed in his craft, pays amazing attention to detail & is a great communicator. We told René we wanted to help. He took us at our word & put us to work. He explained process, demonstrated & confirmed understanding. He'd start his days early, include us when we were available & assign homework for after hours. 90% of a paint job is in the prep. René's pride in his work showed up everywhere. He'd pick up materials he estimated we'd need & let us know to return overages. KKMI's model is to charge the customer for every single item used on their job, down to the rubber gloves painters wear, so Rene's materials mgmt avoided unnecessary waste & cost. Lesson #5: Be present, & involved with the team. Not every owner wants to get as dirty, sore, or experienced as we did, but being there & providing/receiving real-time feedback fostered mutual accountability. There nearly 24/7, we saw everything - overtime on the weekends to change out cabling on hoists, reassuring us that maintenance is a priority at KKMI & the dedication of the leadership team. Paul's a hands-on owner. Present & engaging throughout our stay, he also knew when to defer to his people because he's hired the best. We were treated as trusted members of the team & always shown respect. We were extended every courtesy & everyone in the yard was very kind to Harrison (https://instagram.com/harrisonadventurecat). Lesson #6: Establish relationships early, & nurture them. The team shows pride, integrity, & humility. When things didn't go as expected, because sometimes they don't, there's always someone willing to listen & make good. Bottom paint's the only place we felt a hiccup. A number of spots needed more sanding. Most boats don't sit out of the water and fully dry out after bottom paint, so likely not what most folks see. We invested in labor hours beyond the bottom package but after a few attempts, we settled for a less than perfect bottom job. Lesson #7: If a job isn't done to your satisfaction, speak up. If you don't at least provide a chance to make good, that's on you. Overall, Bob was conservative on estimated & we stayed close on who was assigned, what we would do ourselves, & calling in the experts. Bob could provide detailed insights into every charge, & when there was a discrepancy, he handled it fairly & to our satisfaction. Lesson #8: Pay attention to every person working on your job - in your space, or doing prep in theirs. That way there are no surprises when the bill comes due. Oh, and pay your bill timely - that's a matter of mutual respect. There is so much more we could share, but you get the gist. KKMI Richmond has made loyal customers out of us.

KKMI and Jock are good people, great work and a fair price for the quality of work done... BRAVO KKMI!

New shaft, dripless seal, shaft strut & Max-prop.

Great yard, great work, great people. I tend to be pretty involved when my boat's in the yard and the entire crew in Richmond are easy to work with to get repairs & maintenance done. They also make it easy to do your own work, power, water, ladders & scaffolding are all available, along with advice if needed. Thanks to everyone involved. Mike S/V Red Sky

They want to charge $250 for a quote AND I have to take the boat to them for 2 or 3 days. What a disruption. I live aboard.

Kate's stand was broken…read more(http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/qwJLYZE2xJiBBMyZ4llTBA?select=zQUSAS7vHaXQmTNm5bv3MQ). She felt sad, adrift. Anchorless. Without roots. She had lost her identity, and all the pretty dresses in the world weren't going to make it right. Life suddenly didn't seem to matter, and with her newfound mobility she started hanging with the wrong crowd (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/qwJLYZE2xJiBBMyZ4llTBA?select=yTzQqZoPTc5zSkIOAfaZjA). She wasn't sure how it had all gone so terribly awry, and how she could get back to that safe, secure, and grounded place where she once was. After an abortive attempt to fix it using Superglue, I took Kate's stand to Weiss Welding after explaining the situation to a very understanding man on the phone. He looked at it and assured me it could easily be fixed. He was very sweet and concerned about what welding might do to the appearance of the mirrored base of the stand, but functionality was my biggest concern. A mere day and $30 later, I picked up my new and improved stand, appearing to be even sturdier than before (and the mirrored base looks completely unaltered). I pulled Kate away from making lanyards on Haight Street, plunked her back on the stand, and we were back in business. With a newfound lease on life, Kate not only has turned her life around, but has decided to give back to the community, taking part in anti-war rallies (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/qwJLYZE2xJiBBMyZ4llTBA?select=lAjc9XMtgR3wyyKX3rDz1g) and speaking out against eating disorders. Thanks to Weiss Welding, another mannequin life has been saved!
