I have had 2, 30' cruisers in Dana Point Harbor over the last 15 years. Dave Greuel took care of my first boat, a 1988 SeaRay Weekender with twin straight shafts, for every possible need: mechanical work on both engines, several electrical issues and installation of electronics, repair to damaged transmission, etc. I bought my current boat, a Monterey302 cruiser with twin Volvo Penta engines and outdrives. Dave is the most honest, decent man I know and he was superb as the broker helping me acquire this boat. Since I bought the boat, Dave has done repair to the Kohler 5E genset and maintained the engines. He also installed our Lowrance GPS. Everything Dave Greuel does is EXCELLENT, first class and done the way a marine repair or installation should be done. Mike O. clearly has another buyer in mind, as the boat I purchased through Dave Greuel was a Catalina 22, not the "25 foot sailboat" Mike mentions. So far from being the rank amateur he suggests, I've owned seven boats, sail and power, in my more than five decades on the water, cruising and racing them on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean. Unlike the impetuous fellow who rashly set out at night, I left on a calm, sunny morning in the company of a licensed captain, along in the event we decided to make an overnight passage. The impetuous sailor of Mike's imagination whipped his engine into disrepair. A convenient conclusion, but I don't recall Mike actually being along on the voyage. Had he been, he'd have seen that we motored at a moderate pace, well within the limits of the outboard, until a breeze came up. The folks at Lehr in Culver City can confirm that it was a prior oil leak, rather than ill use, that accounted for our engine trouble. In the late afternoon the wind freshened, and we reduced sail. When it began to gust toward 20 knots--hardly unusual or dangerous in these waters--we put into Long Beach, rather than beat into the wind. The rips in the genoa were the result not of inappropriate use, but of the sail's prior unprotected exposure to the sun, which severely weakened the fabric. Check with Oliver of UK Sails about this one. 40 Knots Rigging in Marina Del Rey can confirm that it was likely an impact, and certainly not our moderate coastal passage that caused the damage to the shrouds, turnbuckles, roller furling and hull. Representatives of Frank Butler, chairman of Catalina Yachts, came to the same conclusion after inspecting the vessel at the Windward Yacht Center in Marina Del Rey, where the staff repaired the hull and repainted the bottom. The storage Mike mentions was hardly an example of Dave's largess; rather, it was one of the negotiated terms of purchase. I could go on, but really, if a broker can't even recall the length of the boat his firm sold, why bother? His account is a self-serving fantasy. I'll leave it to a sensible reader to decide which of our versions sounds like the more plausibly useful guide. read more
