As a longtime patron of Mariscos on Summit, I can attest to the authenticity and flavor that this gem of a Mexican restaurant consistently delivers. I've been coming here for years but never wrote a 5 star review they so deserve. We've moved recently from the neighborhood and last night we made a visit to dine in vs other times we always ordered carry out. From the moment you sit down, you're treated to a tantalizing array of chips and salsa that set the tone for the culinary journey ahead. You know when the chips and salsa are good, that's a very good start. Last night's visit, every dish we ordered surpassed expectations. Personally, I indulged in the Mar Y Tierra, and it was delish. The steak, cooked to perfection, melted in my mouth, while the shrimp provided a delightful contrast. The seasoned rice and beans were so good! Mariscos is very authentic, evident not only in the flavors but also in the ambiance. We were first timers here, dining in on a Friday night. The place was packed, including a big table celebrating a birthday. Table service was instant, really good. From their full service bar we ordered a couple cocktails and put in our food order. Both arrived quickly. Tostada's and a burrito were very good. I drive past almost every day as I work nearby. A colleague recommended this place and today I decided to stop in for lunch. I am so glad that I did! I was greeted with a smile as I walked past several tables of customers clearly enjoying their food and drinks. The server brought out warm chips and delicious salsa as I perused the menu. I just wanted a lighter lunch, so I ordered a fish taco and a shrimp one, both Mexican style. The fried fish taco was divine, with a thin layer of breading. It tasted so fresh and had an ample amount of fish. The shrimp taco was equally delicious but was kind of cheap on the amount of shrimpies. I recently went there and ordered 4 dishes, 3 were hot dishes and 1 was a shrimp cocktail which is cold and in my eyes should be ready to serve. Well after a 30 minute wait the hot dishes came out and not the shrimp cocktail which like i said is a "cold" dish ready to serve, after another 20 minutes or so the cold dish never came out and my daughter said just forget it and cancel it. My daughter did not get to eat which is completely uncalled for! I do understand that the girls were somewhat busy but the problem wasn't that the dish was late, the problem is they forgot!!!! Perhaps hire more servers? And that's not the worst of it!, I forgot my reading glasses so I just assumed what they charged me was correct, but how wrong I was! The dish that I ordered said in the menu that it came topped with shrimp at 26$:.... Well when I got home I looked at the receipt and they charged me 33$:... For it! Not only that they charged me an extra 7$.... For topping the shrimp (which should've came already added for the 26$). So all in all I paid 40 dollars for a 26 dollar dish! We recently tried Mariscos and it exceeded my expectations. The food was well prepared and the service extremely welcoming.

Overall a nice place for fresh Mexican food. There are Mexicans working and dining here so I am assuming that means it is pretty authentic. We normally order the fish and shrimp tacos. We have also ordered the oysters. All very fresh and reasonable. The service is pleasant and attentive. The ambience and dining area can use some updating. This is our go to for oysters. read more

I tried this restaurant 3 times because I like to make sure it was not an off day for the server, because we have all had them. I was in the food service business for 30+ years, from busgirl, to server, to cocktail waitress, to bartender to manager then to beverage department manager and if someone says they never have a bad say they are lying. SO my 3 visits... First time in there they barely acknowledged me. Unless you drink pop, no American beverages like tea or ice tea. Then trying to explain what you want was very difficult. I know this is a Mexican restaurant, but I question why American restaurants have to cater to Hispanics but they do not try for Americans coming into their establishment. This first visit the food did come as ordered. She tried her best to make sure I got I guess americanized tacos with lettuce tomato and cheese. The food was okay, the tacos very small. BUT guac was very good. The do not give you a check. They do not come back and refill water or clear plates or bring check. you have to go up to the register and ask to pay. That I found strange. Second visit was pretty much the same as first, with a girl that again did try to make sure it was what I ordered. Third and LAST visit - the girl barely acknowledged me and I sat myself and waited for her to get done talking with another waitress. Only 1 other table in the place so not busy. I ordered just as I did before, but this time the tacos came with stuff I did not order and did not come with lettuce tomato or cheese. AND she never said a word, like I did not exist. I had to wait and wait for her to stop talking with the other waitress to get her attention and come back over. I then had to order the things to make it a taco for ME...not necessarily their way. BUT I am paying for it and so yes I want my taco to be how I can eat it because I have a bad stomach. She brought the chips and guac with the tacos instead of as an appetizer, though I asked for them first. Service was bad. Here are my problems - If you are going to have a restaurant with a menu that does show Spanish and English, someone should be able to speak to English customers or have a sign stating they do not serve Americans or do not speak English. If restaurants and businesses in this town have to have someone able to speak Spanish for them, why don't they have to do the same for Americans? I will not go back to this restaurant even though I did like the guac because I should not have to struggle to order and be treated like I SHOULD NOT BE IN THEIR PLACE TO BEGIN WITH. This is my favorite Elgin Mexican. It starts with the chips and salsa and they are amazing. Salsa is spicy and I would recommend adding a side of Pico and Guacamole. So fresh and so good. Anything with Carne asada is outstanding but the shrimp is great too. Special weekend menus for menudo if you like that but I rarely stray from the Carne. read more

Nothing leaps out as a flaw, but there are so many choices for Mexican food in Elgin that unless this place is the most convenient for you, you'd do better to visit, e.g., La Flor. From what I remember, there do seem to be more seafood options than is typical for these places, so if that's important to you, maybe this is your place. read more

The food has always been very good whether we eat in or do take out. Great prices. The staff is always friendly and they have a nice a nice atmosphere. The only thing I would suggest is that they have more lights on outside. It looks dark when you drive by at night. We will do definitely be back. read more

It wouldn't seem that hard finding good, cheap, quick mexican food in elgin... but honestly I had a hard time until I found here. The service is kind of slow but the food is absolutely delicious. You can tell it is fresh ans this place is really clean. Im so happy I found a good spot finally that I don't feel gross after eating there. I really enjoy both their steak and pork. Chips and salsa which are always served on the house are tasty as well. Their salsa served with the entree's is boldly not that spicy as it has a bit of a tangy flavor which is a nice change of pace from most other Mexican restaurants around. This restaurant is nothing like it was when I first encountered it. My first visit was so charming the food was so good, I came away very pleased. This past Friday right after Thanksgiving, was another matter. The chips and salsa were subpar. Salsa looked like thick tomato paste with CONSIDERABLE hot sauce in it. I ordered a dinner with an extra fish taco to try. The taco came with debris in it. When asked for a replacement, I did get one, but it was not at all good. But I accepted my fate because getting service was such a struggle. Then when it was time to pay, the wait person did not give me an itemized billing just a dollar total with some indecipherable scribbling. I insisted on itemized bill and found that they charged me for two tacos even though all I wanted was a replacement for the dirty one. I got that overcharge attempt removed. Then at the register a sign warned 4% more "convenience fee" will be added to the bill if I use a credit card instead of cash. When I questioned that, I was told it was not going to be added and then as I'm signing my name on the slip I saw that it was indeed added. I signed in duress rather than any more battling, and just X'd the tip. None was earned anyway. The original owners must have left the country. read more

Very very bad service, pretty much the waitress took our order brought us our food, with no eye contact or conversation. She never came back to see if we needed any refills or to ask how our food was. I wanted to order something for take out but NO ONE even looked our way. When we got up to pay the cashier just told us the amount and took our card and that was it, not a "Have a good day" NOTHING. I only come here when my dad wants to go out to eat. And every time I come here, the food is ridiculous. No flavor at all. Don't bother ordering the skirt steak, because it will most likely be over cooked and taste like a tire. The beans and rice that come as included sides are the blandest I've ever eaten. You, can tell they are pre made and just reheated. The milanesa is non existent, it's as thin as paper. I wouldn't be that disgruntled if the food wasn't over priced. The wait staff is slow, but they are nice. I am Mexican, and am used to wonderful favors in food, but this place doesn't do it justice. They are better places if you are willing to drive a little. read more
