I still love this market as much as I always have. Yesterday we met the most kindest man in the deli section. He was purring out samples of guac Which was delicious. I wish I knew his name to give him a shout out! They make all of their deli salads in house. I wanted to try the pimento cheese so bad but didn't get an opportunity. Food going out of date marked up triple. The milk is either always going out of date that day or within two days at the most, same with meats. To top that off you'll pay about 3 times what any of the groceries cost elsewhere. We understand that it costs more to get groceries transported to the island, but there's no excuse for only selling products other grocers would be putting on clearance or dumping. We had two jugs of milk that were bad and a pack of ground beef that was bad but showed expiring that day. Buy everything before you get to the island and put it in coolers. read more

Maritime Market is exactly what it should be on this laid back island. We live in the island 4-6 months out of the year and have been coming to the island and market for years. The market has a small but good selection of produce, deli/meat, and impressive wine and beer selections. They have mastered getting a lot of variety into a small market. If you are working on a recipe that has more rare ingredients you will probably not find them here but you should be able to substitute. On the rare occasion we need more hard to find items we will get those before coming to the island and then get the main ingredients once on the island. Honestly stopping by the market daily is a fun thing to do. Many times we will decide what to make on the morning for dinner and stop by after a day on the beach to get our ingredients for a fresh meal. The market also has a small cafe that serves breakfast and lunch daily. The chef at the market also prepares frozen meals that you can cook at home and meals to go that are delicious. The market also hosts oyster roasts throughout the year which are deliciously fun. Lastly, the market delivers to your home. Of you are renting a home and arriving late you can order food ahead of time and they will not only deliver it but put your cold items away. read more

This is fine place to buy groceries. It's pretty well stocked, which I remember surprising my family during our first visit to the island a few years ago. There was a good choice for beer and wine. Yes, it might be expensive compared to grocery stores off the island, but it's also extremely convenient to just run to the store. My family was only on the island for a week, so we tried to bring most of what we needed. However, we made regular (read: daily) visits here for water, soda, beer, and miscellaneous items. There is a market cafe at the front of the store. It's okay. I'm posting pictures of the menu and some of our food. The line was a little hectic, and the cafe was generally chaotic while we were there. But my Spicy Tuna Salad wrap was very good. Everyone else in my family was not unhappy but also not impressed with their food (a hot dog with chili, chicken tenders, a ham sandwich, and a piece of pizza). It's a convenient and quick lunch, but it's not the best thing you've ever eaten. They also serve breakfast, but we didn't have that (other than coffee - which is fine). A side note is that they carry Nye's ice-cream sandwiches in a freezer ] near the check out lines, and they're really good (related to the ice-cream shop connected to the market, I think). I had a Key Lime Pie sandwich and a Peppermint Chocolate one over the course of my trip. It's expensive for an ice-cream sandwich (the total for one sandwich was just over $6.00), but they're killer. A periodic ritual on Bald Head Island, the oyster roast brings everyone on the island to socialize, drink and of course partake of roasted oysters. Married together with wonderful side dishes the event brings out over 350 participants. The event offers alcohol tickets for tap beer or wine. However you can also buy your favorite libations at the market and drink at the event as long as it has a paid sticker on it. Coppers pizza is the worst. Rudest employees on the planet. Zero stars. Spare yourself the experience

After a pair of visits to the island, I've come to the realization that I have your classic "love - hate" relationship with the Maritime Market (MM). LOVE: For a tiny grocer not much bigger than a convenience store, MM really has an impressive array of products. Given the dearth of decent dining options on the island, I cook most of my meals while on vacation. It is rare that I cannot find the items I need when visiting the market. HATE: The aisles are exceptionally narrow, so expect to feel like you are in a mosh pit with other shopper when trying to maneuver through the store with a basket full of goods. LOVE: The MM staff members are friendly and helpful to a fault. They are quick to provide directions to lost shoppers and the cashiers always wear a smile, even when the store is slammed with customers. It may take a while to checkout, but that is more a function of the crush of customers than inefficient staff. Finally, mad props to the staff at the deli counter - they saved my bacon when I arrived late Friday afternoon to find a single take and bake pizza left in the deli. They quickly volunteered to make me four more pizzas, averting a potential revolt by the herd of famished kids back at the house eagerly waiting for their evening feeding. HATE: Then there are the prices. They are a monopoly on an island that is a major tourist destination and MM takes their capitalistic responsibilities quite seriously. Each time I make a trip to the store, I expect to see the cashiers wearing masks and have them instruct me to remove my valuables and empty the contents of my wallets into a bag. Pro tip: Consider loading up on pantry items on the mainland, box them up for the ferry trip to the island. It was a hassle, but that step saved me a couple hundred dollars and several hours shopping at the market after I arrived. LOVE: MM carries an impressive collection of wines. You pay for the privilege, but don't fret if you forgot to pack a couple of bottles of wine. You will be able to find something you like. HATE: This is a minor hate, but the store does have a choice of where they source their produce and it would be nice if they could bring in more local produce during the growing season. There is a bounty of fresh produce grown in and around Southport which could be ferried to the island like everything stocked by the store. Make it happen MM, make it happen! LOVE: The Nye's Cream Sandwiches served at the ice cream window will make you swoon. They are that good. Even with its warts, I really do appreciate the Maritime Market. The convenience of a short golf cart ride to the market more than compensates for the hassle of riding the ferry to the mainland for provisions. read more

We've been coming to Bald Head for summer vacation since 2010. We like coming to the store. They have fresh fruit, vegetables and the meat is the best. Sure, the prices will be a little higher than your local grocery store but that's understandable. It's an island. Their cafe has good breakfast choices, great coffee. This is the only food market on the island, so you're pretty much part of a captive audience. Having said that, they do a pretty good job of having a reasonable variety of meats and produce, though the produce is not the freshest you'll encounter. They have a very nice selection of beer and wine which is nice since there is no ABC store on the island. They also have some prepared foods available, and can furnish complete meals, fully prepared, for 8 to 10 people. Cost runs in the $75 range for that. You can place an order online and have it delivered to the house you are renting so that it will be there when you arrive. This is a nice touch because the last thing you want to do is hand carry food items on the ferry, nor do you really want to go flying to the market after a long day of traveling. This approached worked very well for us. The prices are high here, as you would expect, but that should be expected. All in all, these folks do a good job. read more

I would recommend bringing certain foods from the mainland in a cooler before arriving at BHI (such as meat). Decent selection of domestic beer, craft beer & wine. The deli and restaurant can make for a good lunch spot before heading out to the beach for the afternoon. They also have a small section with some shirts, sweaters and drinkwear in the front. Other than that, they have your normal items that definitely get the job done for your trip. read more

Had food delivered and they sent rotten chicken that's must have sat in the sun on the delivery cart. We thought the refrigerator was broken until we realized the foul odor was from the chicken. Although I returned the chicken, they would not refund their 20% service fee which was added. We also had milk delivered which was also spoiled. They are the only market on the island. Bring everything you can and only go there for necessities. They need to re-evaluate their delivery service as it is a failure. read more

The reviewer who ranted about the plastic bags will be happy to know that they are now (as of 2014) using paper bags, except that they put your raw meat into plastic bags. Yes, it's pricey. Would you expect anything different from the ONLY grocery store on an island with no bridge and no ferry service for cars/trucks? And yes, the veggies aren't particularly fresh, but again I think this is somewhat to be expected. One of the other reviewers complained that they don't sell local tomatoes or peaches. Don't know how to break it to her, but there isn't any farmland on BHI, so good luck with that. Their selection in terms of meat and seafood seemed OK to me, again considering the location and the amount of room they have. Their baked goods seem like they could use some improvement (I doubt anything is baked on premises). My biggest complaint is probably that the pizza in the cafe is pretty lacking, and it is the only pizza on Bald Head Island as far as I know. If you ask me, a decent pizzeria in Bald Head would make a killing. read more

The goods are a little pricey, but that is to be expected given the fact that they have to bring everything in by barge... and there is no other real competition on the island. Its a good place to stock up on beverages, snacks, and all the other grocery store stapes that might be needed if you don't feel like spending 40+ minutes roundtrip to get back to the mainland. read more

We have visited multiple times but this past trip was the first time we purchased the prepared meals, our choice was the shrimp and grits. Was very simple to preorder before we left on the trip and very easy to pickup etc. The menu says it has 6-8 servings, but it easily had almost twice that and it comes in two pans (one is just the grits, the other the roux and shrimp). It was a hit with group and had the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. read more

I have been extremely disappointed by the market at BHI. Yes there's variety but the prices are robbery and the quality of produce and seafood is poor. I mean seriously, it's July and you can't get local ripe tomatoes and peaches??! And the seafood smelled so fishy when I unwrapped the packet, I almost didn't want to cook it. You expect to pay a premium at a place like this, but you also expect the quality to go along with it. You'd eat better for less money by springing for the ferry ticket and shopping on the mainland. A family friend rented a home on Bald Head Island for their Easter break (March 26-31), due to our recommendation. We were so disappointed in Cafe at Maritime Market. We ordered lunch, our sandwiches were dry and on the menu it stated they came with spicy mustard, or mayo, neither were on our sandwich. The worst sandwich I have ever have, cold with no flavor. I ordered turkey and Brie cheese. How hard could it be to make a decent sandwich, just some sauce and maybe bread toasted or microwave!!! Really lovely market - best of old world (small, friendly, charming) and new (wide and modern selection in all departments). We have been visiting BHI for 28 years. The actual market is pretty good with selection. Pricing is high on dairy, wine, and meat. We bring a big cooler on the ferry with steaks, shrimp, and crabmeat and then buy fresh fish as needed. The tuna is amazing. We also bring all of our own alcohol They do not sell liquer on island so pack accordingly. Now, the cafe and ice cream shop are another matter. 1 Star The breakfast we never ate. Ordered at 1010. 10:25- "we are out of bacon it will be a little longer". No problem 10:35- "we are out of grits would you like home fries" No problem 10:55- "we accidentally threw away your order ticket and already cleaned the kitchen" No breakfast. Big Damd Problem The ice cream is good but it takes forever. The company that makes the ice cream feels it should be enjoyed without toppings so if you order whip cream and sprinkles you will receive them in separate cups to be applied by you. There is a saying here on BHI, "your on turtle time". This cafe is on geologic time. read more

I like this grocery store. We shop here every time we visit the island, as there is no other grocery store there. Yes, it is pricey, but you ARE on Bald Head so obviously you cannot assume they do Harris Teeter pricing (big Duh! here). They do however, have a pretty good selection of everything-even frozen foods and deli. The pre made chicken salad they offer in the deli area is delicious! I came into today at around 12:30, I order shrimp and chicken tenders. I asked the cashier to split the payment. She had no clue what she was doing. She started to get annoyed and then charged me $23 for the all the food and charged my friend $11.69 also. By that time the shrimp was cold because the cashier was fighting with the other lady who worked there. Then when I got the chicken tenders I asked why she charged me $23. She proceeded to yell at me and told me I was wrong when I pulled out my bank app where it has my purchase history she told me I was an idiot. We went and sat outside and the chicken tenders were way over cooked and hard as a rock. I will never be eating here again. The customer service was horrible. I work at restaurant in Raleigh and if I was ever that rude to a customer my boss would have fired me on the spot. All the workers seemed like they didn't want to be there and were very rude. ALSO NONE OF THEM HAD THEIR MASKS ON RIGHT. this is a violation to the CDC health guidelines. read more

First visit to Bald Head island in June of this year. We came to the island with virtually no groceries and were prepared to travel back into Southport to shop if we felt the island upcharge was a little excessive. Happily, we did not feel the need. The store is very well stocked and the prices were very reasonable. I would estimate that your $100 bill here would be maybe $85-90 on mainland. Excellent selection of wine and beer. We indulged a mimosas on the beach habit and were able to pick up a bottle of "champagne" for $10. Produce was good quality. Bought some excellent artisan lettuce. We were able to buy some excellent local shrimp (maybe $12-13/lb) Were able to buy gluten free pasta. We (pre-ordered) grilled blue cheese burgers one night which everyone enjoyed. Also picked up a Mediterranean chicken entree out of the frozen section which was good. (Tried to order one of the family meals which require 24 hrs notice with only about 8 hrs but they were doing a wedding that night and could not accommodate-totally understandable- and we talked to the wedding party who were very happy with their food). Picked up pimiento cheese and seafood spread (house prepared) from the deli case and were very happy. Found myself in need of super glue (broken glasses) and was prepared to get raked- $1.99! Also had forgotten a hat and was able to pick up a nice BHI baseball hat for $11-12. Luckily our unit came with a spice rack and previous renters had left us with olive oil, vinegar and mustard (and a big bunch of parsley?) In the future i would bring spices (we lucked out) , condiments, oil and vinegar, maybe dish soap (provided in our unit) and any non beer or wine alcohol. Otherwise the market can meet your needs reasonably. read more

Very poor service by a lady with a name tag on with last name tooley. I asked for napkins and she encouraged us to use all the plastic Togo wear. We ask her to go grab is napkins and she stomped across the place and was super super rude. She walked by us after getting the napkins and didn't offer us napkins. She then walked by laughing knowing we'd have to get up to go get them. Very poor service in my opinion. read more
