I have lived on OKI for 12 years and have driven past Grape and Ale thousands of times and always repeating "I've gotta check that place out", well I finally did and boy o boy am I glad I did. This wine and beer bar and bottle shop is awesome. I can kick myself for waiting so long to check in, but better late than never. Cozy inside atmosphere with a nice selection of beers cans, bottles and on tap to choose. The wine by the glass is trainable with a good sized pour. The wine rack selections in the back is diverse and well priced. Can definitely see buying a bottle(s) to share. The outside space has tons of seating in a relatively small space. A section with a fire pit, beer and wine tasting and music on weekends. The staff are great to talk with and good reference for beer and wine selections. My new OKI hangout. read more

Great place! We were in town and visited here with friends who live on the island. This is a place we could tell the locals go, so we knew it was going to be good!! They have a large selection of beer and wine to order at the bar. They also had a few coolers of local beer to purchase and a TON of bottles of wine to purchase. Out back they had free wine tasting! There were about 5 to choose from, you could only taste 1 at a time so had to get back in line each time but the line went fast. This helped me with what to order. My only complaint is that the inside is not huge. When we got there, it was raining so everyone was inside. All the tables were taken so we just stood around but felt like we were in the way and were terrified we were going to knock a bottle of wine and break it. The rain did clear up and then we were able to go outside and had much more room!! read more

The Grape & Ale is a wonderful little shop on Oak Island. As its name suggests, you can buy - and taste - both wine and craft beer. It's a cozy, well-stocked space with an entire room of wines below $12, along with a box of discounted closeouts. In the main area, wines are sorted by price levels, the highest on top. Based on the inventory I saw, you'll be able to find a wine to fit any palate and price range. During tastings, things can get a little crowded, so if you're claustrophobic like me, plan to arrive early to miss the heaviest crowds. There's also a lovely outdoor area with a fire pit behind the store that served as a calm oasis during my visit. The owners are knowledgeable, friendly, and host both wine and ale tastings. I believe Thursdays are ale and Fridays are wine, but please call or visit their website to confirm, and to see what adult beverages you'll be sampling. If you're lucky, you'll get to pet Napa, the resident wine dog, during your visit. What a sweetie. read more

I love the Grape and Ale! This business is local and family owned which is a win in my book. Year after year they consistently provide the best wine selection on the island with unique flavors from all over the world. I found some of my favorite wines right here in this shop. I really enjoy the free wine tastings on Friday night but be sure to grab a bottle of wine on your way out. They recently added a beer area as well with several taps to choose from. It is my understanding they offer beer tastings on Thursday nights as well. They have a ton of craft beer in the cooler which makes for a unique selection unlike your regular ole grocery store. Local business worth supporting. Only Bottle Shop on the Island Fantastic selection of wines. Pretty good revolving beer list, both taps(growlers or pints) and bottles/cans. Covid seating is limited to outdoor tables and masks are required by statute. The service is great. In late July I inquired about 2020 Octoberfest biers, and a few days later they had one of my faves ready for me! read more

Cute little spot! Perfect place to pick up wine and craft beer, to grab a drink and get away or do both. Boyfriend and I grabbed a beer and were able to enjoy a few "competitive" games of backgammon. Cute little wine and beer store in oak island. We were looking for some wine with a better selection than food lion. Adorable patio in the back to drink a glass of wine or draft beer: as well indoor seating with an adorable fluffy dog. They have free beer tastings on Thursday and wine tastings on Friday. The wines are arranged by price - $12 and under in the front room and then in the back the shelves are also arranged in 3 blocks of prices. The gentleman working gave me wine recs in all 3 price ranges. I didn't love the one that we ended up drinking but it wasn't bad. For beers we had a bottle of a NC made chocolate stout which was on point. Overall varied selection- likely the best in the area. Next time would come for the tastings! read more

Don't let the "only wine and bottle shop on the Island" make you mistake Grape&Ale for just good enough...truth is, I like it better than any place I've been in Raleigh or Durham. The wine selection is outstanding, whether you are a novice or a collector. I loved the front room with "discounts", and having the wine tasting system there is a huge plus. We got to sample a terrific cab that was out of our price range, but it convinced us to pick that one for a gift. And it was super easy to find a less expensive option for our own meal. The bottle shop side has great selection, too. Not much that I haven't seen before, but enough to satisfy any beer palate. The owner was the only one there, and she was super friendly, helpful with suggestions, offered a couple of samples, and was overall just pleasant to be around. Really good selection of wine and craft beer for such a small place! 3 or 4 wines in a dispenser for "by the glass" and two taps serving the ever popular beach beer brand, Ballast Point. Beer one: bottled Scuplin IPA, Beer two: draft Sculpin Grapefruit IPA. Owner is super nice and friendly and provided some samples she had recently opened! Great place to relax and have a cold one! The blueberry wine we tasted was local and wonderful and the store donates $1 of the purchase to local animal rescue charity, so of course we bought a few bottles. What a cool little place! I came here to find some craft beers for the week...and while I wasn't successful in that endeavor, I was impressed with the overall feel and wine offerrings in the place. There was an art project going on that had a bunch of people painting. I would have liked to jump in and have fun with them. They were pretty busy when we came in and since they didn't have what I was looking for, the experience was short. Next time I'm in town...I'll be stopping here again for another go at it. read more

We had a blast - the owners were very friendly and knowledgeable, the beer selection was nicely varied, and the brats were fantastic. After enjoying the evening's selection, we proceeded to purchase a handful of additional beers from their excellent selection. More than you'd expect from a wine and beer shop! Stumbled upon this place while visiting family. They happened to be having a beer and wine tasting going on. For the price of one pint of good beer we got to taste several beers and wines AND then received 2 pints of tapped craft beer! We enjoyed trying local beer curated by knowledgeable people. Their shop is connected to an artist's shop and we enjoyed checking out the art while drinking beer. We also purchased some beer that we'd never tried. Great experience! read more
