I am so glad we found this place! My husband has challenging feet - born with club feet, and now he is a Chef who stands all day. We're new to the area and wanted to find a place that carried high-quality, supportive shoe brands like SAS and dress shoes for orthopedic clients. I was so impressed with the staff and the quality of the selection. We came in on a busy Saturday but were quickly attended to by a knowledgeable and friendly sales associate. She listened to my husband, picked out two choices - both were perfect - he bought exactly what he needed. While he was shopping, another saleswoman took time with me - I tried on probably 10 pairs of shoes - "just for fun." It was great - she brought out styles I would never usually try and really enjoyed getting some new ideas. There was no extra pressure, no sales gimmicks - just quality products. I went into Mark Adrian because I needed some good Fall/Winter shoes, I wasn't sure what I was looking for but Chelsea was extremely helpful. She took the time to ask me about my needs and likes then she helped me pick out two great pair of boots, rain boots and a great pair of tennis shoes. Also she helped me to pick socks for the boots. Having shopped here almost exclusively for the last three years my conclusion is that quality of the products and the selection on offer is excellent, but the service quality of the way they fit you to the shoes is too biased by the prejudices of the particular sales person helping you. Or perhaps they are too reliant upon the output from the shoe measurement software. In three years of shopping, I now have a collection of footwear which have proven to be comprised of: 1/3 too small, 1/3 too large and 1/3 just right. That's based on taking the advice from the staff about the level of stretching to expect from the type of shoe and from the level of room recommended to leave in the toe box for walking for a long duration in one day. This last time that I went, the salesperson allowed me to draw my own conclusions about fit, and showed me what I asked to see. That was the first time that has happened. And I was pleased with the results. I'm not sure if they are truly trying harder to listen to their customers, or if I happened to get lucky. Overall, I'm ambivalent about returning, because at this rate of success, I might as well take advantage of more generous return policies from other companies. read more

What a lovely find while shopping in Gloucester for the day! Super friendly and extremely knowledgeable associate named Chelsea helped me. I have horrible feet due to neuropathy and it's hard to find comfortable shoes/boots. Chelsea was super helpful with offering suggestions with wide toe box's to accommodate my painful feet. Ugh . . . Finally found a comfortable Haflinger boiled wool shoe but didn't have the color in my size. . ( Of course, right? Sigh. . .) Chelsea took my name and number and said her manager would call the supplier on Monday to see if they could get my preferred color and would call me with the results. Sure enough Chelsea gave me a call back on Tuesday to say unfortunately they would not be able to get the shoe color. She was wonderful to assist me in the manner she did and then followed through with looking for my color selection. Wonderful customer service and Chelsea was fabulous! Give that woman a raise!! In an age of online buying, Mark Adrian Shoes reminds you why it's worth getting off your duff and driving down to your local stores. You won't meet nicer people who so clearly care about getting you into a great pair of shoes. I hadn't been into the store in over a year and yet they (several members of the team) remembered aspects of my last visit (which shoe was sold out and that my young daughter had just had a birthday). I always try and shop local. But this store is off my list of possible shops. The shoes are fine but the customer service is rude. My poor dad went in to return/exchange a pair of slippers from Christmas and they were so rude to him he walked out without anything. So, I have a store credit now for the slippers, but I'm so pissed off that my CHRISTMAS PRESENT ended up being a HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE for my dad I can't step foot in there without screaming at someone. With summer just around the corner, I've been trying to compile an exhaustive list of Cape Ann reviews for my fellow Boston-based Yelpers who want to get away and soak up the sun without joining the teeming masses on that other Cape (Cod). I was looking at the list and there was an inordinate amount of 5- and 4-star rankings. Has hometown nostalgia penetrated Rune's sensible cynicism? Surely there must be some suckitude on the North Shore? Here's an example. I try desperately to reserve the 1-star rating for only the worst of the worst and paid strong consideration to leveling Mr. Adrian with that treatment but reconsidered upon considering the fact that -- everything else aside -- the staff is knowledgeable and they maintain a considerable inventory. The prices are horrendous and the atmosphere is lost in the late 80s. Did you ever see One Hour Photo? It *feels* like molestation the same way Robin Williams' photo lab must. The proprietor gives me the creeps and I shudder when I think about parents entrusting their tots' little footsies to that man. I'm sure that's just Rune being distrustful and I don't mean to disparage the man. Just seeking to admonish would-be shoppers against what might be a discomforting experience. As for Jeannie C (much love, darlin') labeling this a 'classy shoe store', I'm thinking that she's not getting over the bridge too often. There's nothing for you to buy here that you can't get for less (in terms of hard currency and mental anguish) at a run-of-the-mill shoe store in the city. read more

I don't know if I'd say "classy" shoe store, but I wear Danskos to work and this is the place I get them! The staff is super helpful. I bought a pair there that was a half size too small. I wore them for a week, thinking they'd stretch out. I went back after a week to see if they could stretch them for me, and they just took that pair back (mind you, I was upfront about the fact that I had worn them for a week!) and gave me a new pair in the correct size. I've never bought shoes here, but I have bought things like laces and shoehorns, and wow, Mark Adrian himself really needs to take a course in charm school. The rest of the staff is friendly, but he's the most unhelpful sourpuss. The whole point of the little Main St store, as opposed to the chain, is a level of personal service (that one pays for). Though I visit Gloucester frequently, I'm in no hurry to revisit this store. read more

This is not the place for high fashion evening shoes (although, to be honest, they could probably accommodate that option as well), but for anything else, at least try them. I am extremely displeased with the customer service at this establishment. I bought a pair of boots recently after doing thorough research, and while I could have bought them for FAR less on Amazon, I chose to shop local. The boots were a big purchase for me, and after a week of breaking them in, my ankle is chafed and bruised. I know this is not the store owners fault, however, when I called to try and have the situation rectified, I was met with abrasive and arrogant tone of voice, remarks and behavior from the owner of the store and man who sold me my shoes. Needless to say, I will be taking my business to Amazon in the future, and so should you. I should have listened to the warnings I heard about this very reason NOT to shop here before I made this purchase. VERY disappointing. read more

Straight up awesome shoe store. The store specializes in comfortable foot wear that fits your right. And they do it very well. There aren't tons of very formal styles, rather lots of stuff for work and casual. There is a wide selection and they will order models from the brands they carry just for you to try on. I have a wide foot and most shoe stores don't accommodate for anything but a D width, rather they suggest I just get a size up. Mark Adrian, on the other hand, won't try to sell you something that doesn't fit right. They also introduced me to some very comfortable semi-formal brands that friends and family have started buying after seeing my satisfaction. As for the staff. I've been going there for a dozen years or more and never had a problem. Rather, I've been given some of the best service of any retail store in the greater Boston area. Maybe the owner isn't the most effervescent guy, but the staff is all friendly and very knowledgeable. The prices aren't competitive normally. But it's definitely not overpriced and there are often sales. Also, considering the wide variety of what they stock, you're not going to find a better brick and mortar with a similar inventory and better prices. As for the store, it's always clean. Don't understand the complaints about he decor since it's wall to wall shoes. So in summary, if you're looking for the most comfortable everyday shoes you can find, give this place a try. read more

I rarely purchase shoes in stores because I am so very difficult to fit: high instep plus 4E width and club foot issues as well. I don't shop for the cutest shoes, just something that will go onto my feet, not hurt, not look odd. So I was thrilled to go into Mark Adrian's on a whim during summer vacation and emerge with three pairs of nice looking, comfortable shoes. Not cheap, but these are top quality shoes -- I might get them cheaper at Zappos but Zappos doesn't have the range of styles nor do they take the time to fit me exactly right. Alanna was so patient-- had to have more than a dozen boxes out, and she would have gone all day if needed with a smile. They will take email/phone orders and ship free. They retain my fitting information on file. This kind of personal attention and service is extraordinary these days. They're slightly less than an hour's drive from my home, and they are now my main shoe store. read more

This is my favorite shoe store of all time! The atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable. The selection is incredible! They also have accessories like great socks and handmade purses. I've been going to this shoe store for years and it's even better than ever! The staff is very knowledgeable, patient and fun to work with. If you have ANY kind of need or issue with shoes they can help you find exactly what you're looking for and they back up their sales with recommendations and follow through to make sure you're happy. I went in a couple of weeks ago looking for a pair of sandals and found a great sale with a great selection of shoes for good prices. One of the sales staff asked me a few questions and started bringing me shoes... and more shoes. She spent an hour with me and I walked out with 3 pair of the best sandals I've ever had. Internet shopping is great for many reasons but you'll never find this kind of expertise, selection, and personal - really helpful service on a website. I visited this store when I saw that they had a good selection of Keen footwear (which I find to be very comfortable). Mr. Adrian - who seems to score low with some customers - was nowhere to be seen. I was helped by a very friendly, knowledgeable salesperson who actually seemed interested in getting me shoes that I would like. They were not that much pricier than some of the other stores I've visited and I expect to pay more in an independent store such as this. I live in Gloucester and try my best to keep my business in my own city. However, I would pay double somewhere else before I walk into this store again. More than once I have been questioned by management about my choices, where I purchase my shoes, and why I have tried on shoes but decided not to purchase them. Let me say, I was purchasing a different pair of 50.00 shoes, I decided I didn't love the 125.00 pair. Why would a consumer have to explain? I have never felt welcome and have only left feeling frustrated and angry that this store is open and able to represent the city I take a lot of pride in. Went in years ago before Yelp was even a thing when I was in my late teens but I will never forget how awful I was treated by the owner, Mark Adrian, that it's stuck with me to this day! I bought an expensive pair of Sorel boots for hiking in the winter with hard earned money I saved as a delivery driver. I sure was excited putting the boots on in the store but noticed they were uncomfortable on the top of my foot/shin when I started walking in the store testing them out. Mark assured me that they just needed to be broken in. I purchased, wore them one day and the boots wore away my skin from only a couple hours walking. I took the boots back the next day and asked Mark Adrian to please accept a return for refund but he denied me. He said he could fix the problem. He took the boots in the back and when he returned minutes later, he had glued/affixed small cotton pads inside the boots where the seam was rubbing. What a joke! I wasn't convinced that would work but with no other options and a bit of naivety I took the boots home and when my skin healed up, I tried the boots again. No surprise the cotton padding was uncomfortable as well. A day after that I visited a chain outfitting store and found the exact boots and tried those on, guess what? They felt great. The boots from Mark Adrian were clearly defective. I went back again to his store explaining this and asking for refund but Mark again refused to take them back and only offered a vastly cheaper pair of boots for exchange. What a disappointment. Now reading some of the reviews here, I'm not surprised to see some of the awful reviews the owner, Mark Adrian, himself has received. I know Mark Adrian shoes has been in business for years and years, I'm sure he could have survived a refund for a defective product. While my husband and I were spending a weekend last month in Gloucester we happened to pass by Adrian Shoes. My husband knows how much trouble I have finding shoes so he suggested we stop in. Since I have bunions, shopping for comfortable shoes has always been an ordeal. I had no expectations that I would find anything beyond Merrells which sales clerks always lead me to. I was blown away when Tom, the young man who waited on me, pointed out several brands of sandals that I had never heard of and they actually fit, felt very comfortable and looked great. I ended up buying three pairs of summer shoes! Bernie Mev, Wolky and LA Plume. I have been wearing these sandals for the past month so they have been tested well. No sore feet. No aching back or knees. I am as comfortable in these shoes as I am in my Saucony sneakers!
