Dominic, the friendly owner, took us 3 (total novices with 3 pretty distinctly differing ability levels) out, made us feel safe, gave us fantastic guidance, and taught us key skills that enabled us to have a great experience. This was summer 2020, mid-pandemic time, and we felt safe as far as protocols and were very grateful we could still rent the boards and enjoy a lesson. We took the 2-hr option and found it perfect for our novice needs. There was nothing I was looking for that I didn't find there and nothing I'd have changed about the experience. I understand why they did it, as it's one of the most popular beaches in the area and for good reason. Our recent visit was amazing. We arrived while the tide was low and crossed over to the island, and what an amazing view it was. It was fantastic, but don't stay too long or miss when the tide is coming back, or you might have a hard time getting back and get soaked. If you haven't visited, do yourself a favor and enjoy!

After I called the surf shop to advise them that there was no instructor at the meeting location, I was told who we were supposed to have as an instructor apparently "had a mixup in his schedule" is what the young lady said when calling. This isn't the first time this has happened. When we did this last year same situation of a schedule mixup. The young gentleman at the shop where you pick up your wetsuits are very pleasant and helpful. I was later called by one of the managers to let me know that they were refunding for the full cost of the lesson and that we would still get our lesson. They said they were refunding to apologize for the inconvenience of waiting over 30 minutes past our lesson time for an instructor to arrive.

His instructor (Ronnie Lees) worked with him and got him up on the board, cruising to the beach the first hour. By the end of lesson #5, he was paddling out on his own, starting out on his own (no push), accomplishing simple turns and routinely surfing all the way to the beach. Being a Minnesota kid, this was a truly unique experience. Our only dilemma...next year do we sign him up for another five hour package, or a full camp? Needless to say, he wants to do both.
