All they told me was that my things were real gold and real diamonds, but that they couldn't take it since the quality wasn't the best. So then, I said "thank you! I understand but what would you guys price this since everything is real and not lab grown" and they said "we don't know" how are you guys a jeweler and don't even know the value of gold and diamonds? They have a good selection of ready to wear jewelries but I would not recommend customizing here. I had two stones for customization and the store suggested me leave the stones here and they would show me clay over stones for design visualization, also was told the clay would be ready in 1-2 weeks. Left stone with the store and called in after a week, and was told they didn't receive pictures of designs that I like, so I resent. Waited another two more weeks and called in twice, they kept telling me clay will be ready soon, and got a certain answer on last call that clay will be ready last Sat. I went in today on Tuesday and they didn't do any clay with either of the stone, instead showed me a design which I said in my first visit that I would want something different. So imagine leaving them stones for almost a month and come back to see nothing is done as they promised, during the waiting I didn't get any call from the store but have to call in to keep checking. I went in with a number of jewelry pieces that I wanted to have appraised. I had called ahead and had been told that they indeed do appraisals. When I got there, I was told that they charge a percentage of the items value for appraisal. Then, a very rude, condescending gentleman came around and basically called my items junk. One ring was a 1920s .98 carat diamond that had been previously appraised. I won't be wasting my time to stop in again. read more

I've had two completely different experiences with Mark Areias regarding timepiece repairs. The 1st one was easily a 5-star rating - a century old watch was cleaned, repaired and now runs beautifully. Before they even took the watch, they said the repair would actually be done in Carmel and was that ok? I appreciated that they wanted me to know where the watch was going and make sure I was good with it. I was completely confident they'd do a great job and they did. I recommended them to friends because I was so pleased with the work. Because of the great 1st experience, I went back to have them work on another watch. This time there were delays; a woman who I believe said she was Mrs. Areias wasn't the most pleasant person to deal with and said Mark probably had it at home and hadn't brought it in yet. Long story short, it just seemed like there was miscommunication from the start on this; I made several calls to the Carmel store and each time spoke with Mrs. Areias and finally I just gave up and asked if they could just return my watch. very sad to say, but I had been going to Mark Areias Jewelers for a long time. I had a ring I asked to be re-designed to look antique ( i specifically asked for filigree) and to sit low. Not only were more diamonds added but it did not look antique at all. I was charged over $5,000.00 for something I didn't like or asked for. I agree, they are very nice. But Mark is a business man and does not really care about the bottom line when it really comes to the costumer. after going back 3 times saying I did not like the setting, they just kept telling me how beautiful the ring is... but it was still not what I liked.... it was what they liked. I decided not to put any more money into this disaster and turned the ring in. How I got a bit over $7,000 for a ring they appraised at $60,000 minus of course the $5000.00 in new charges, I still can not figure out. I don't own a lot of jewelry but I've dealt with Mark Areias Jewelers for a few very important pieces and they always have fantastic customer service and the quality of work is unsurpassed. They recently made my engagement ring and I was in the store today to pick up my ring which was being re-sized (at no additional cost) and I asked about a jewelry box/case they had displayed on the counter. i am absolutely blown away by the experience that i just had with this local reputable jeweler. my fiance bought me a beautiful Tacori engagement ring ($18K)and proposed to me in Hawaii. i was told that under no circumstances do i let anyone clean or work on the ring without first looping and recording it's lasered serial number. I've lived in La Selva beach all my life and visited Mark's store nearly every week for 8plus years and was sure that i could trust them. still, when i went in to have the ring sized i asked for the serial number to recorded on the intake slip and explained that my fiance was specific about this. the clerk was unable to read more than the first 3 characters of the number and i said that was good enough (i trusted them) and i told them i would return to pick it up next week when they called to inform me it was finished. just a few minutes later i received a message from the store telling me that Mark had overheard the conversation and he would rather i take the ring elsewhere. these people know me by first name and the friend i had with me for all this owns the shop next door to them. i returned promptly to pick up my ring and apologized if they were insulted but that surely in this day and age my fiance who paid hard earned cash for this ring, could not be blamed for such a request. i am left wondering why they responded to such a reasonable request this way and just who in fact they think they are? i will tell everyone i see this story and needless to say, i will NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE OR ALLOW ANYONE I HAVE ANY INFLUENCE OVER. read more
